One random question please: did you have any problems connecting the controller on PC (provided that was the version you played) ? I am trying to connect the XBOX controller on the PC version and its the only game that doesn't recognize it. If so, how did you fix it ?

I started with Dark Souls 3 a couple of years back. It took me climbing a steep curve of ability to take in the game in a general sense (rpg systems, the skills required to simply play it), and that's the case with a lot of people. Heck, I still wasn't sure of it until the point a friend told me to get to. This friend was someone who took so long to get through the game he took 10-15 HOURS to get out of the first area (something that should take 2-5 at the most), but he nonetheless was adamant in the quality of the game. I had similar rejection of the game even earlier, having refunded the game twice, tried it at friends and even finished the first area, none of which convinced me that I'd like it.
After I got to that point, however, my mindset had been completely flipped. There was now no question as to whether I'd finish the game or not, I had to, it was just so interesting and now observably brilliant to me.
I'd like to give a suggestion. Try Dark Souls 3. Choose knight, and maybe look up a build that's standard and works well, and simply just try to understand enough to use the essential systems, like increasing estus flask healing ability and number, upgrading weapons and upgrading levels. (Strength and Vigor are the best ticket). The place where I got to and eventually convinced me was beating the Abyss Watchers, which took me around 10-12 hours. It wasn't easy, I wanted to quit, I was constantly confused, and the area the Watchers is in is horrendous in almost every way it can be. But, if anything, I think that indicates to an underbelly of brilliance that a lot of people see. Maybe you're curious enough to want to see it too?
Also, something else is that disliking or liking Sekiro or DS1 less doesn't necessarily mean you'll dislike DS3. They're all similar somehow in a overall sense, but there are slight differences that make them feel disparate as experiences. Personally, I'd say that DS3 is the most smooth and consistently quality entry in the series, in contrast to DS1's horrible lows and super-high highs, and Sekiro's greater focus on combat and enemies (a bit at the expense of other elements imo (like level design)).

Also the weapons are amazing! A walking cane that turns into a bladed whip, a hammer that turns into a monster arm and flails around like crazy, a sword that sprouts a gun that fires lightning fast, even a sword that uses your own blood as a blade so you need to act really fast and kill an enemy to get your health back. It's awesome.

@@johntimothyvalenzuela8146 That is the issue I take with his review. The Genichiro fight really makes the games systems click into place. You realise that you need to attack relentlessly, use parries when he counters, and use the Mikiri counter every chance you get, to build his posture bar as quickly as possible. That really opens up your eyes to how the game should be played (aggressively rather than cautiously), because up to that point, it feels counter-intuitive to be overly aggressive. When you work with the game's design, it is far more fun than when you are fighting against it.

You don’t like that enemies block after two or so attacks, after many hours, this is where you eventually realize that parrying is a deadlier offense than attacking. The rhythm becomes tiring out your enemy in one or two hits so that they can be insta-killed. It fits the samurai/jedi like zen theme that goes along with the shinobi mythos. You can shorten most battles by hitting attack only once and that is when the deathblow is ready because of how closely you’ve paid attention to the enemy attack animations. This is also coming from someone who took WAYYYY too long to get a feeling for the Mikiri counter let alone how to tell it apart from a sweep.

He doesn't want to spam the same attack over and over again, he wants to be able to react in fights instantly. I totally get what he means cuz I feel that way too about the Souls games.
Not being able to use your basic attacks instantly can feel really detrimental to how you interact with enemies. Imagine a shooter where you HAD to look down the scope first for every single shot, no hip firing. That'd suck. Power attacks can be slow, but your most basic attack should be immediately accesible. There should be multiple options available and we should have to make the right choices to succeed, but let us make those choices instantly.

    • @humanbeing8676
      @humanbeing8676 2 роки тому +100

@@RacingSnails64 You can attack almost instantly with your basic attack. The same with deflecting. In fights you need to make split second decisions to win like changing your attack into a block because the boss is about to attack. Overall sekiro combat is fast paced and it's true what people say about it being a rhythm game, you learn bosses move sets and attack based on them. I could give you an example if you want like your 2nd fight with genichiro. In his first phase whenever he does a jump attack when he lands it will always be a thrust so you can spam the dodge button. But in his 2nd and 3rd phase he can do a sweep attack afterwards and you'd have to instantly react to what position he's in to figure it out.

I really love your videos, but with this game you seem to criticise elements that are actually on you for not learning the game's mechanics properly. Start paying the same amount of attention to other games as you did with Eternal.

@@fuckso2342 But Sekiro isn't about parrying? It's a huge component early-game, sure, but it really isn't the case beyond a surface level. Take Oniwa, for example. In the early game you can get up to get 3 different ways to stagger him; 1. Firecrackers 2. Flame vent 3. Grappling hook. All 3 force him to flinch for a damage window/ attack cancel, and if you explored you have the axe which grants poise and does big damage too (from the air as well).
Parrying is more of a way to force openings than a defence if you master the game, which gives you freedom to deploy combat arts and tools to extend damage windows and punish seemingly unstoppable attacks- you can literally melt some bosses without ever needing to block late-game. The game encourages aggressive play, to disrupt opponent combo strings and then assemble your own. I love that it doesn't force pre-made button pressing like x x x y or something. You have to carefully consider wind ups and recovery for all your moves to find out what can combo without gaps. And because your dodge has very few I-frames, you can't cheese attacks by rolling through them- you need to position yourself and keep the environment in mind to avoid damage. New game+ even adds chip damage to reduce reliance on block spam.
As for exploration, its true Sekiro has little variation in architecture but that's because it relies a lot on colour palette to differentiate areas. From the Blood-Red forests of Senpou Temple to the Sky-Cyan glow of the Divine Realm, every area has a clear and distinct colour scheme that ties into its concepts, ambience and history.
Now that second bit is subjective, and I agree that Mayo can dislike it, but the first bit really isn't. I get it- he dislikes the style, but that really isn't an excuse to avoid engaging with mechanics he praises the game for requiring engagement with. Nobody put a gun to his head and forced him to review the game, It would've been fine just with a community post saying 'Great game, not my style'. Instead, he suckered everyone with a title that promises in-depth analysis, the jumps over to ninja gaiden, a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT GENRE, and praises that when everyone already knows his preferences, without ever looping back to Sekiro.
If he's within his right to say that though Sekiro is good he doesnt like it, I can say that although I can respect his opinion I think that this was a half-baked con of a video which had very little to say on the promised subject.

Every enemy encounter in that game, it literally shows you a quick video on the weak points and counters. Some of the criticism Is based on accurate information, however every combat example he gave is completely inaccurate.
For example on chained ogre the attack he tries to dodge twice you can either jump over or sometimes you can run backwards; mostly jump to avoid it.
For Gyoubu Oniwa you can use fire crackers to stun him and dodge through many of his attacks to get more attacks in. For the bull you can use Shuriken’s to damage him while he’s charging.
For the enemies you show mashing attack to kill there’s again a faster way to kill both of the enemy types; parrying and mikiri counter.
For the guys in robes you aren’t getting a perfect parry, if you were that wouldn’t happen. You can also dodge through that attack.
The game has very high player agency, and it has combos. You just weren’t aggressive enough. You didn’t use your senses, enough while playing this game. If you did; reading 8 sentences and using your senses. you would’ve known that your combat criticisms are based on incorrect information.
In this review you are completely hypocritical not wanting to learn enemy patterns or learn and upgrade your abilities in Sekiro, but in Ninja Gaiden that’s perfectly fine for you. Pretty much all of the things you praise Ninja Gaiden for, also apply to Sekiro. For instance level variety, and unique combos with different uses. I think you don’t like sekiro because you didn’t want to.

I thoroughly enjoyed this game, and will eventually pick it up again to play on the new update. But one thing I have to say is that you need to have patience to enjoy the SoulsBornSekiro games; lots of it. It is something quite a few people don't have, which is fine it just means a game like Dark Souls and Sekiro are not their type of game. They are meant to be challenging and meant to take slow. Rushing through it is not what it wants. It wants you to take your time and take every part of it seriously.
You mentioned not liking how slow the sword swings are, but there is a gameplay design for it. If you could swing faster it would essentially break the game and turn it into a mindless button spam game. It would break the part of the game that requires precision and patience. You need to know when to attack, when to block, and when to avoid the unblockable attacks. If every encounter could be solved by pushing the attack button, it would compromise what the game wants to be. I could describe Sekiro as a kind of rhythm game. It is a constant dance of attacking and blocking at the right times, and the better you at dancing to the rhythm, the better you can kill.
It is clear that you enjoy fast paced games that provide a constant stream of fun, while also providing a fair amount of challenge. Which again is totally fine, but it is something the SoulsBornSekiro games will not provide. They don't want to give you constant joy, they want you to suffer and only be driven to complete the game simply because defeat is unacceptable for you. The fun lies in overcoming the games obstacles and not giving up, and seeing yourself become better at it. You learn enemy patterns you memorize how long it takes to attack. And you see yourself become stronger and better as time goes on. But that isn't fun for everyone, some people just want to play and get better at the game, instead of getting better at playing the game.

All quite valid points... but the thing Mayo (and I) don't like about the the SoulsBourne genre is how the game actively tries to PREVENT you from learning how to engage with its systems. The trial and error required is so tedious due to the high TIME penalty you suffer each time you die. The game should either do a better job teaching you how to play it, or punish you less harshly for exploring and doing some trial and error.

Just standing there and parrying all of Gyobu's attacks is actually the WORST way to beat him, not the best. The best way to beat him is to scare his horse with the firecrackers prosthetic, which allows you hack away at him while his horse recovers. Playing Sekiro without using prosthetics or combat arts is like playing Doom Eternal without using weapon mods. I'm not saying you have to like the game, but I don't think it's fair to play the game wrong and then criticize the game for it. You rightly called out critics for playing Eternal wrong and then shitting on the Marauder, and yet that's exactly what you're doing here. @@dontbothertoreply9755 The problem is that he has reviewed the game, before he has learned how to play it. Sekiro is a lot like playing Doom Eternal on Nightmare, where you have to engage with the game's design in order to succeed. For example, in Doom Eternal, you have to use the chainsaw, you have to use the flame belch, because without them, you wont survive. You also have to learn to combo weapons with quick switching if you want to get past the tougher fights. Imagine a casual reviewing Doom Eternal as being a bad game, because they played on Nightmare and didn't do any of the above, and as a result kept dying. That is what this review feels like.
In Sekiro, you have to engage with the game's systems to succeed, that means attacking, deflecting, mikiri countering etc, to build the posture bar to get fast kills. The game isn't designed to be played cautiously, it is designed to be played aggressively (which feels counter-intuitive), but once it clicks, it makes the game a lot more fun. Mayo clearly hasn't reached that point, so for him, he doesn't see the game getting any better, but that is because he hasn't learned to play it properly yet.

Saying that though, I would guess he played it using a controller, and that is torture. I tried it that way when I first got the game, and quickly swapped over to mouse and keyboard.
And to be fair, he is right about the camera, it sucks, especially when you get near a wall and it starts humping the back of your head.
I honestly think he would have enjoyed this game more, if he kept playing and got to grips with every mechanic. But he seems to think he already has, and the game has nothing more to offer. But I would say, judging by his commentary and the footage he showed, that he hasn't fully learned the basics of the 'combat loop'.
But I do think he is sincere when he says he doesn't like this kind of game, and I understand where he is coming from. The momentary elation you feel when you finally wreck a boss, quickly evaporates when you realise there is another one around the corner, and you will likely die a dozen times before you learn the fight and beat it. That does take its toll after a while.
But given that Sekiro is a game where you can finish it on the highest possible difficulty (NG+7 and debuffs) without taking a single hit, it has a level of mastery to it that no other game I can think of has, which makes it a masterpiece in my eyes. I will never achieve that, but that just makes it a life goal on my bucketlist.

From literally designed every boss to be a puzzle that the player needs to solve in terms of moveset, they also designed the game to be one where you are VERY likely to die multiple times before you solve/defeat a boss... so adding these enemies is just ridiculous.
I found that I was actually dreading playing the game not because I wasn't getting closer to figuring bosses out, but because it sucked having to go through the tedium of killing all the normal enemies over and over to finally engage with the boss. This is something that could've been solved by just having the checkpoints before the boss. It has been done with Nioh, Bloodborne, and Dark Souls on several bosses so I really don't understand this decision with Sekiro.

This all comes from a place of good faith and constructive criticism:
Something rubs me wrong about the fact that you used fromsoft and elden ring tags to help with promotion then proceeded to not give the game the time its due as a reviewer and spend over half the video talking about a different game without circling the conversation back to the topic outlined in the title. Feels like you didn't honestly want to play the game in the first place and so were looking for reasons to dislike and drop it. The arguments you use even seem cherry picked. Sekiro gave you access to combos very early, you just didn't engage with the systems because you didn't want to over some vendetta against menus and skill trees as if those things aren't present in the other games you mentioned. Something you didn't seem to notice was the focus on stealth encounters. You started talking about skipping enemy encounters but that sort of thing was always intended as a possiblity from the moment they decided to give you a crouch button. There's boss encounters that can even be made much easier by smart, stealthy play. I like your videos but this one seems a bit forced and i genuinely think you would have enjoyed your experience more if you tried to engage with the systems more and not just focus on the melee spam. You can engage enemies in a variety of different ways than just hitting and blocking. It also feels bittersweet cause it really sounds like you dropped the game just as you were coming to the climax of the first act, after which the game opens up and you definitely do get to travel to different landscapes, albeit all within this fictious, yet grounded rendition of Japan. I understand your reasons for dropping it and they are valid, i just feel like you didn't get far enough to accurately make that call. There's been a number of games that it took me months to get into and i absolutely dreaded, but once i fully sunk my teeth in, i grew to love them. Hollow Knight sat in my ps4 library for years after my first outing with it before i went back in and now its one of my top 5s. A little bit of progression past the robed samurai dudes would have been the real test of everything the game had been trying to teach you in the form of a fairly harsh difficulty wall of a boss on top of the castle you were climbing up. This review would seem more valid and complete if you had progressed to that boss encounter, beat it, and then made the call to drop it or keep going after seeing how that affected you. That being said, enjoy the content, keep up the good work.

I’m also surprised he didn’t talk about the stealth mechanics. Playing smart can cut a majority of miniboss encounters in half.

Sekiro has one of the steepest learning curves I've ever played. I'm a souls vet and it still trashed me hard. I loved the platforming and exploration, and the atmosphere really impressed me too, but I didn't really click with the game until the first Genichiro fight, I was absolutely forcing myself to play out of trust that my perseverance would make it all click.
I think the posture and deathblow system is the best past of this game, it makes aggressive combat feel really rewarding when you break though the defenses and kill a boss before he's even at half hp.
Sad to hear it didn't click for you, but that's okay. It's a really demanding, stubborn game. The world does feel samey for a LONG time, and if I didn't like the environment I probably would have given up on it too.

I understand that Sekiro just isn't the game for some people, but some of these complaints seemed very goofy. Too many items? Lol. Also, you barely scratched the surface of what you can do in Sekiro in terms of combat. Parrying is the bare minimum you need to learn, but incorporating the tools, the special techniques, and combat arts you unlock later add a lot of layers to the combat system. Using firecrackers on Gyoubu to freak out his horse, using the loaded spear to rip armor off of certain enemies (and also used in a different way on a later boss, which I won't spoil), throwing shurikens on enemies that like to use aerial attacks, and then following up with the chasing slice, etc. But anyway, yeah, if you hate parrying, this game isn't for you.

He somehow was able to get through to the final boss while skipping nearly every encounter, mini boss, and prosthetic. I remember, he was talking to me about the final boss fight and was complaining about how little health he had, how he wasn't doing damage, and how he didn't have enough heals for it. It was clear that he wasn't enjoying it, and the final straw for him was me asking how many heals he had. He had 5 heals for the final boss fight, while I had 8 and was still behind him in progress. This revelation had him trash that playthrough and completely start fresh, while using his new knowledge to get way better at the game. He replayed the game, exploring the world, fighting every mini boss and getting completely engrossed in it. After he beat the game in this playthrough, he went back to his first playthrough and annihilated the final boss with his given stats. This gave him a new appreciation of the game, and this made Sekiro his favourite game.

Ok, why are you comparing Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice to hack and slash combo games like DMC and Ninja Gaiden?
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is more of a spiritual successor to Tenchu: Stealth Assassin and has more to do with that than any hack and slash game. If you approached it like a Ninja Gaiden and/or DMC game, no wonder you didn't like it.
Each to his own, I'm usually ok with people disliking a game but they would have had to actually play through it all and experience it in its totality for it to make sense and appreciate as a review. 9 hours of Sekiro is nothing. There are two things I do want to comment on.
In terms of items, I'm also in the boat of I don't want to spend so much time managing all of it. But you actually don't. To make a long story short, all you need to upgrade is your health and sword damage. You can literally ignore everything else and it all plays the same. Sword and health are the core. The only two things left are weapon arts and the prosthetics both of which are simple and allow you to access special moves with unique properties. I was going to go into a bit on how some moves are better against certain enemies with each tool and move having a pro and a con and whatnot but from the sounds of it that's not your style. All the items simply spice up the gameplay like exchanging health for damage etc.
The second one is...I don't think you're playing it right. This isn't an attack. From everything else you've said you still probably won't enjoy it. But you mention you don't want to just sit there and parry parry parry. That isn't the way to play. And it's a good thing you never reached mid to late game using this tactic because some of these enemies will border on impossible if you sit there doing that. You actually do need to adopt an aggressive style.
Your description of the Ninja Gaiden part especially confused me. "Simple enemies are in front of you and easy to kill. And you can just mash the attack button for a while. But that doesn't last long" "You realize very quickly that you need to start blocking. You do unlock a parry after a while. And it's useful. But you don't really have to use it" "Has a universal block" "But your guard can eventually be broken"
This particularly confused me since...that's sekiro too. I had to cut up the words since it's not exactly the same. Parry is not unlocked and the guard is not universal but it's pretty much the same. You have to go in, lay in pressure with a chain of attacks, and when the enemy performs a defensive move like dodging or parrying, perform your own defensive move then counter attack. The first mooks you can mash until they die. Then you come up against ashigaru with hats and those guys will probably pull off one parry so you have to pick a response to that and enemies go up from there with more frequent parries or different ways of defending.
Like I said, this isn't meant to be an attack and you probably still won't enjoy the game. The speed is still comparatively slow and it's a game about back and forth as opposed to doing combos. it's just two observations from what I've listened to.

      @Jabroni_14 2 роки тому +2

He's not doing a great job of explaining why he prefers ninja gaiden but I think its bc it also requires back and forth between defense and offense but the depth and speed is much higher in ninja gaiden so he finds it more fun.
Like in ninja gaiden some of the different combo routes have different strengths and weakness which allows for interesting trade offs and much more micro decisions. Sekiro provides all the same, except its not easy if you just know the right button combination AND you have to play the game to unlock more "combos" and mechanics that allow you to create more of those "combos" mid fight. the thing with sekiro is you need cognitive ability on a level of casual gamer to actually form up a combo while playing with all the different options laid out, in ng the combo is already made you just have to execute it and there is not a single way you can mess up the "combo", you can maybe get interrupted but thats about it.
for the speed thing there are certain enemies requiring your speed and their speed is pretty high too, but it doesnt look as fast in sekiro because it is supposed to be reactive gameplay focusing on 1-on-1 encounters and not button combo aoe mashing bunch of "difficult enemies" :))) + there are different kinds of punishments which is f/e kuros charm, and while not having it if u dont parry you take damage so the game actually ramps up the difficulty that way and not by speeding up the animations, thats very outdated game design with many flaws and no actual difficulty change, just faster action execution which isnt skill, its altered muscle memory

In Doom Eternal, if you miss a shot or position incorrectly, you take damage. Enemies will overrun you if you make a series of mistakes and getting better means dealing with these situations better and managing demons to avoid these situations as much as possible. In soulsborne, mostly against bosses, you need to make every action count. Missing a dodge or a heal timing often means instant death, but hesitation is defeat. It takes patience but also precision in a way that is definitely enjoyable and well designed. The camera falls into that precision too, where its another aspect of gameplay that needs to be deliberate in order to manage multiple enemies. Firstly, it's hilarious how you switched what you're reviewing mid video lmao.
Secondly, I find it interesting how Sekiro and Ninja Gaiden have certain similarities like the orange orbs that can power up special attacks reminding me of spirit emblems and combat arts in Sekiro.
Thirdly, your view is understandable, and if you don't feel good after defeating a boss or a miniboss then you probably shouldn't play the game because that's the main thing of it - being put against awful odds and eventually making it just by sheer skill and a sprinkle of luck. I personally like the combat, it's responsive and punishing if you don't respect it. One of the things I can assume is that you like to mash the attack button, but in Sekiro attacks are sort of queued up, so you will be punished if you need to guard right after mashing. I say semi queued because you can break animations, just not all of them all the time. Considering attacks it's more of a surgical cuts than rapidly overwhelming your opponent. As for the environments, I find them varried enough, like sure it's all Japanese, blossom trees, long grass, Asian castles yada yada, but the environments are varried and distinguishable. Ashina castle looks way different from sunken valley, which looks different from gun fort, which looks different from Fountainhead palace. Exploration and direction, well, I'd be lying if I said I've never got lost, but usually if you listen to the characters you will know where to go, which I understand can be a problem, some people don't care about cutscenes and story, and really just want the combat. As for there being too many items, well there is a lot, but they can be pretty easily understood, you have one candy for each stat, you have pellets, gourds, and grass that are basically just different levels of health healing, you have rice and persimmons that are levels of posture healing, and you have items that remove effects like fire or poison or such, and upgrade materials which you actually don't touch. It looks overwhelming, but it's actually pretty simple if you care to understand it. As for too many upgrades and such, I like that, there's a lot and that's good, and as you make your way through them you can really feel your character getting stronger. Apart from passive bonuses you also get combat arts which are Sekiro's form of combos and special attacks (together with the prosthetic tools). You can really augment the way you play with these, and they get progressively more powerful as you play, like empowered mortal draw which is a powerful strike with long wind up animation that hits really freaking hard and causes damage even through guard. I mean, sure there's a lot, but you don't need to use all of them, you pick the few you like both from prosthetics and from combat arts and use those. In fact the entire game can be beaten without having to use all the skills and items and tools, and those are there more to raise the skill ceiling than the floor. But realistically it takes a lot of patience to get to that point and understandably not everyone may be willing or wanting to put up with all that. But during my time, it clicked it isn't an action game like say ninja gaiden or dmc but an actual rhythm game like punch out but EVERY enemy has their pattern and flow you have to take note of with the most complicated and thrilling been the bosses themselves.

Honestly, given Mayo's feelings about Dark Souls, I wasn't particularly surprised by this reaction to Sekiro. I can see how someone could feel this way and not like the game- although the idea that Sekiro has a ridiculous amount of 'items' bemuses me a bit. I always thought Mayo would like Bloodborne more- once you get a weapon you like, you can just go all-out. There *are* 'numbers' as Mayo puts it, but you can kinda ignore them after a point, more than you can in the Souls series. (Yes, Bloodborne has more of these 'numbers' than Sekiro, but the combat itself is less...ponderous and more aggressive.) Anyway, it is interesting to hear a coherent, thoughtful critique of a set of games I absolutely adore. Interesting and useful :)

    • @dominiccasts
      @dominiccasts 2 роки тому +4

Bloodborne still has a lot of items, and a weapon upgrade system, and the whole gem system (though that takes a while to get to, and longer to get full of redundant items, so maybe it would be forgiven), which would probably elicit the same reaction from Mayo. Not to mention that while the combat there is quick by From Soft standards, it's still slow compared to the hack-and-slash games Mayo brings up as their gold standard for action games. Also the game keeps the whole player-controlled camera system, even though it does have multiple lock-on points for large monsters. Also also you are in the whole Victorian Gothic setting for 3 sections (probably 5 hours first time) before getting something different with a forest, all of which is quite dark from the forest on as the game takes place at night, and then you are back to the Victorian Gothic setting, so the complaint about same-y level design would come up too.
For the record, Bloodborne is my favourite From game and one of my favourite games ever, but given what Mayo has been criticizing, unless he's a huge fan of Victorian Gothic architecture and werewolves, he's gonna hate Bloodborne as much as he hates Sekiro.

To be honest, Victorian gothic and ancient Japan arent at the top of my list of cups of tea and I still adore them (BB way more than Sekiro, which I see as a wonderful experiment that needs a bit more fleshing out somehow)- which shows how much that 'feel' of a game and its mechanics account for. I bounced hard off Remnant, for example. It just felt janky with a weird difficulty curve and basic enemy design. Yet many love that, and tbh I expected to!

The best part about Isshin, is that even when you lose, you still have fun. So you go back for more. And again and again, until you beat him. And each time, one phase is easy, and another one hard. It is unpredictable. And yet, after I beat him and started NG+, I kept going into the Reflection of Strength, to fight him again.
I had heard he is the hardest boss, but no one said he was the most fun to fight against. I loved the Genichiro fight, hated the Owl fight (until I learned to use step dodge and mortal draw against him), raged against the Ape fight (again, until I learned how to use prosthetics against it), hated the Monk (until I watched UA-cam videos that taught me how to cheese it), felt like the world's biggest mong against the Demon of Hatred (but eventually beat him), so these were all epic fights, but only the Genichiro one had me loving the game..
And then I got to Isshin, the Sword Saint. I was so scared of him, I disengaged my target lock and ran away from him, and fell off the cliff. And I was VERY close to beating him in the last phase, after about 20 attempts. Took me ages to learn the timing to reflect his lighting, but once I figured that out, the last phase feels like a cooldown and stretch period after a bout of exercise.
The variety of bosses is great, but the best bosses are the human warriors. Genichiro and Isshin, are utter bastards, but so rewarding to fight against, because you can take ages to drop them, or you can do it quickly. It is not simply a case of back off, run in, get some chip damage, run out, rinse and repeat. You are rewarded for being aggressive and calmly focused at the same time. As a good fight should be.

I do agree with the idea of making all difficulties available from the start. With that said, difficulties above Devil Hunter in DMC5, for example, are meant to be approached with a bigger arsenal than what is provided at the start of play (more unlocked moves and abilities).
If you included all available moves at the start, it would be very overwhelming for a new player.
If you were to attempt higher difficulties at the start of DMC5, it would be incredibly tedious with the lack options and the greater enemy health pools and damage.
If you approach Devil Hunter as a means of exploring the games potential, especially if you avoid being hit at all costs, you can have a very good time.
Also, I do appreciate that DMC5 not only increases enemy health pool and damage like so many other games do, but also increases the frequency of attack and enemy move set.

I can definitely see by the other action games you play why Sekiro didn't mesh with you. Sekiro Is a back and forth bout; exchanging attacks; your defence and counter attacks are more important than your initial offence. It's much harder to overpower your enemies with fast long combos that render them permentantly staggered.
Sekiro by design will be a hard time with these expectations and habits. I know you said you'd put 9 hours into the game but by the footage it looks like you never finished what's effectively stage 2; only stage 1 which is almost like an extension of the tutorial. I think mentioning this is more of a first impressions video would keep some of the commenters in-check.

Because switching these would not fit the tone of these games, which is gritty and dark. It'd be like making a hotline miami map that takes place in a farm or in a big palace, it just doesn't feel right.
Also, wanting to only "slash at the boss" is not a good enemy design. It might work in God of War, which is fine, but most of the time just being able to hit enemy without being punished isn't a good thing.
