True - but if we could get away from that it is a fine Batman game as it is. Arkham City was also disappointing in that sense because we were promised Dr Strange would be the main villan, but it was a bait and switch - and honestly the same with Scarecrow in Knight. He may be the main threat, but all 3 games just shamelessly focused on The Joker.

They aren't, you actually have to play a game, not just activate cutscenes and scripted events.

@@DarkZide8 At least the "bait and switch" was done well in AC. Strange was the main antagonist for a majority of the story. And Ra's was a dope boss fight. AK just dropped the ball with its story as a whole. The Knight was literally just Red Hood with a new costume.

I still beg the question: how does Kojima's PT demo and experiment into first person horror look 100 times better than a game that was released in 2024 for modern hardware? And these are the same people making Metal Gear (Delta) 3 remake? Konami should be at Defcon-3 right now.
his criticism of the level design being over engineered is appealing to me. I love backtracking and treating levels as mazes. but too much enemies I don't like with that melee system. I sucked at it in Callisto and will prob suck here too.
@@horrorjunkie96 They were OVER compensating in design choices to stretch it out longer than what it needed to be and UNDER compensated in others - like basic design choices of characters (they look terrible), enemies and scene progression. It was a stinker and doesn't deserve that 70 price tag. Smells like (S) M.O. just like with their latest games they are doing. Over price & under deliver. These are games retold for a market that don't care about the games legacy, story or meaning all for a modern audience.

We can agree on a few things. DMC2 is biblical trash, DMC3 is fantastic and Arkham Origins is criminally underrated. Wow, DMC3(not really surprised, because of your comment that you didn't want to start filming the video for the sake of keep playing) , I'm currently replaying it and what a joy. I went through like 12 missions without realising. Can't wait for the DMC4 review, sure as hell it's going to be a rough one, but that game just scratches a part in my brain that no other thing does, I hope you find the fun in it too.
The only good thing I can say about DMC2 is holding the shoot button instead of mashing it. I don't see the tactical or practical advantage of reverting back to mashing shoot until your thumbs hurt.
Cause I have general negative feelings towards Graven. Just not enough to officially place it on the list. I don't want to show something that's gonna be on the list cause that ruins the suspense. Not the most diverse? Okay. Horror, hack n slash, retro fps, speedrun fps, immersive sim shout-out, open world action game, whatever the hell Slitterhead is, third person shooter with melee. It's enough diversity for me considering what my channel has been covering for 5 years.
@@underthemayo I don't mean genre, more that 30% are older titles which could be space on the list better put towards more mainstream titles u skipped over this year that are more relevant to viewers to hear your take on, rather than Darksiders and DMC lol. Stellar Blade, Ronin, Wukong, Metaphor, Tomb Raider 1-3, Outlaws, Hellblade, Like a Dragon, Stalker, Indiana Jones, Erdtree, etc. u might have done videos on some it's just strange they're not impactful enough to be either worst or best.

For example I barely play AAA releases during the year they come out. If you limit yourself to only new AAA stuff you'd be an unhappy douchebag, it's better to have a backlog of older stuff and have plenty of indie games at hand too

This was a pretty solid list, it seems that you had some highlights both good and bad this year. Funnily enough, JUST last night I bought Slave Zero X and here I see it on this list a day after, good stuff. I know Doom The Dark Ages is top priority on your radar but I would also look out for Phantom Blade 0, it's a fresh hack n slash, imagine dmc/sifu combat with souls/sekiro environments. Can't wait to see what we get this year. Also, I'm still waiting on you playing Returnal 😉
Would love to hear your thoughts on RE: Code Veronica. Recommend playing that when you feel like an old school survival horror that follows that formula pretty well of RE 1 and RE 2. It's my favorite RE game, so I'm sure you could find some serious stuff wrong with it ;)
The best game was a surprise for sure. Happy to say I played a lot of new games, and most of them were good. My top 5: 5) Silent Hill 2 Remake. I have issues with the game, but its pacing is much better on repeat playthroughs. It is a good modern take on the game. Though prison and the labyrinth sectios kinda suck. But I did not like the labyrinth in the original either. 4) Crow Country. Nothing really to elaborate on, it is a great love letter to classical survival horror. 3) Selaco. For an early access game, it is amazing. Combat is amazing, and I cannot wait for the story updates and chapter 2. 2) Dead Rising, the original. The first game is something really unique. Time and resource management, map comprehension, weapon variety, freedom of exploration, surprisingly engaging story. It is amazing. Survivor AI sucks, but you can manage it with proper equipment. I played the remaster as well, and while it has some quality of life changes, they dumbed the game down too much. 1) Tomb Raider 1-2. Never played them untill this year, and man, these games have aged beautifully outside of combat. The level design, puzzles, music, platforming. These games are amazing. Did not play the third game yet, heard that it takes a serious dive in quality, but I will get to it. Honorable mentions go to Soul Reaver 1 and Hitman: World of Assanssination. Had a great time with both. The only bad game I have played was Soul Reaver 2. It reminds me of playing DMC 2 after DMC 1. It is not THAT terrible, but the devs stripped it of everything I liked about the first one and replaced it with tedious combat and boring level design.
I thought Slipgate was just an overworked studio that took on way more work than they could handle. But seeing that they actually think their terrible attempts at exploiting boomer shooter nostalgia are good and critics are just haters is disappointing. Phantom Fury should've been the DNF 2001 we never got, instead it was DNF 2011 all over again.

2024 I really enjoyed my favorite from this year was Final Fantasy VII Rebirth As a big fan of the original game (its my favorite of all time) this delivered in ways i didn't think was possible and I was very very happy. There was others i played too but id be here all day Hope 2025 has something for everyone
they really did overuse the batmobile in AK, but overall the game was pretty damn good. story-wise maybe not that much, however the combat and open world were solid. it looked amazing back then and showed what UE3 is capable of in the hands of talented devs, hell it even looks great today. sad that the same studio who made the arkham trilogy fell so low and made gotham knights and suicide squad.
Solid? The gameplay is better than all the previous games. The batmobile was not overused, it was wrongly used. Only 15% of the game includes the batmobile, only 2 side missions actually require the batmobile to fully complete them. Every other side mission does not require the batmobile at all, or does not require it for 90% of the side mission. Less than 30% of riddler trophies are batmobile specific, and this less than 30% could be any percentage, just know it's not near 30, it's less than 30. You are correct on the graphics part, in fact graphics have remained stagnant since 2015. Arkham knight is one of the first games to achieve such an amazing look. What I mean by wrongly used is that instead of making this boss a tank battle, make them an actual boss. The batmobile was never overused as proven by the fact it takes up a minor portion of the game. They just happened to use it in the places where people really did not want them to use it.
12:58 oh boy. I just recently "borrowed" Graven to try it out and... well... I had to stop playing after about 10 minutes. Loved the art style, atmosphere and old school vibes. Unfortunately I couldn't stand the gameplay. Don't like the mage archetype to begin with and it did nothing to change my mind. Breaks my heart.
Mayo, out of curiosity when was the last time you played Silent Hill Downpour? Not a criticism or anything, I just remember when the game released and understand most people simply haven't in over a decade by this point and am curious if replaying it would be in your interests. Not saying you have to, either, but sometimes I find it odd how out of Homecoming, Shattered Memories, Book of Memories and Origins, you seem to hate Downpour the most. Personally I despise Homecoming and what it did to the franchise because out of them all it seemed to have the most influence on movies and the future direction of the series in general despite being such a pain to play and failing to execute on anything "Silent Hill" (This was before the Silent Hill 2 Remake released which is now my most hated SH title simply for what it means for the rest of the franchise going forward and how praised it was for essentially crippling what made the OG so beloved). I think Downpour is better than most give it credit for. Not nearly as good as the original 4 titles nor as bad as the aforementioned; it felt like it tried to learn from the mistakes of prior American SH titles and actually tried to have a Silent Hill style story with its biggest flaw being its enemy roster. Those are just my thoughts. Here's hoping 2025 is better.
Three things mainly. The ridiculously nonsensical narrative with endings that make no sense. The complete lack of awareness and taste (see my video on the intro). And for me the greatest offense is that it's just so boring. The town itself is so goddamn dull. Running around it was agonizing. I remember laying on my side holding up on the controller to "explore" and barely staying awake.
@@underthemayo Fair enough, can't fault any of that. Well, aside from the story. I'd say it's worth a second look though I can understand how it might not be immediately obvious what it's talking about. The whole thing basically revolves around "Boogeymen" as a concept and how we create our own demons and project them onto others. But that's also really hard to engage with when the game around it isn't pulling you in and that's definitely a criticism worth leveling.
@chandlerburse Yes, because Downpour wasn't literally trying to be Silent Hill 2 Remake and calling Downpour a poor attempt at copying Silent Hill 2 is just wrong. Like, their plots are literally completely different, you're thinking of Homecoming when you say that. Like I have been saying, I don't love the game or anything, I just don't think it's worse than the other games around it at the time and I was curious why Mayo disliked it in particular.
IDK if Mayo plays RTSs but man my #1 disappointment AND #1 worst game is Homeworld 3. I hate Gearbox forever now, not ever buying one of their games ever again. Couldn't just let BBI make a good game.
@@underthemayo do yourself a favor and never play HW3. However if you have never played any of them pick up the remastered collection or uhhh "aquire" it. Homeworld 1 is the most compelling game of all time imo. It's story isn't super deep it just speaks to your humanity. HW2 is not as good but serviceable. To also note I was a fig backer for HW3 so I can't even get a refund.

That's not what this is about. "The Silent Hill Phenomenon" that The Short Message and Ascension adhere to is a nonsense retcon that claims this is something that can happen anywhere as a psychological experience or whatever so they don't have to have any actually logic behind it. It craps all over the series' mythology. It's not called "Resident Evil/Biohazard" which is ambiguous and can be used for various things. Silent Hill is literally the name of the town and that town has history and power.

If I had to guess(and I do), Team Silent would've likely gone with the simplest most logical explanation, magic is real in that world and that places like Silent Hill though rare and isolated do exist. i actually PARTLY agree with the silent hill 2 remake. it really did felt extremely bloated, in fact i had to stretch my playthrough over 3 days due to how tedious it was playing it in one sitting. BUT it was my first time experiencing silent hill 2 properly since i stopped playing the og sh2 shortly after the house section due to the dated graphics and gameplay, and for the first playthrough the story still grabbed me. they've done a fantastic job at that part. also i dont mind the gameplay, since the og gameplay was a big reason why i stopped playing it anyway

@underthemayo Path of Exile 2, an ARPG similar to the first two Diablos. I'm guessing it's outside your wheelhouse, similar to Wukong. I'd call Wukong an in-between between Sekiro and DMC, leaning more towards Sekiro, with an emphasis on boss fights. It was a nkce experience.

My favorite part of SH: the short message was the protagonist checking her phone to see her follower count drop moments after escaping the monster.

Wow, DMC3(not really surprised, because of your comment that you didn't want to start filming the video for the sake of keep playing) , I'm currently replaying it and what a joy. I went through like 12 missions without realising. Can't wait for the DMC4 review, sure as hell it's going to be a rough one, but that game just scratches a part in my brain that no other thing does, I hope you find the fun in it too.
The only good thing I can say about DMC2 is holding the shoot button instead of mashing it. I don't see the tactical or practical advantage of reverting back to mashing shoot until your thumbs hurt.

Cause I have general negative feelings towards Graven. Just not enough to officially place it on the list. I don't want to show something that's gonna be on the list cause that ruins the suspense.
Not the most diverse? Okay. Horror, hack n slash, retro fps, speedrun fps, immersive sim shout-out, open world action game, whatever the hell Slitterhead is, third person shooter with melee. It's enough diversity for me considering what my channel has been covering for 5 years.

Stellar Blade, Ronin, Wukong, Metaphor, Tomb Raider 1-3, Outlaws, Hellblade, Like a Dragon, Stalker, Indiana Jones, Erdtree, etc. u might have done videos on some it's just strange they're not impactful enough to be either worst or best.

For example I barely play AAA releases during the year they come out. If you limit yourself to only new AAA stuff you'd be an unhappy douchebag, it's better to have a backlog of older stuff and have plenty of indie games at hand too

Silent Hill 2 remake is my goty but i actually agree with your take on it. It's my first silent Hill and definitely dragged a bit too long so i can only imagine how returning players felt about the length
As a returning player I loved it. More to do, see, explore. So many Easter eggs and homages to the original. It was a huge treat.
The identity of the Arkham Knight was even more obvious than Batman's.

This was a pretty solid list, it seems that you had some highlights both good and bad this year. Funnily enough, JUST last night I bought Slave Zero X and here I see it on this list a day after, good stuff. I know Doom The Dark Ages is top priority on your radar but I would also look out for Phantom Blade 0, it's a fresh hack n slash, imagine dmc/sifu combat with souls/sekiro environments. Can't wait to see what we get this year.
Also, I'm still waiting on you playing Returnal 😉
The real arkham trilogy
Would love to hear your thoughts on RE: Code Veronica. Recommend playing that when you feel like an old school survival horror that follows that formula pretty well of RE 1 and RE 2. It's my favorite RE game, so I'm sure you could find some serious stuff wrong with it ;)
The best game was a surprise for sure.
Happy to say I played a lot of new games, and most of them were good. My top 5:
5) Silent Hill 2 Remake. I have issues with the game, but its pacing is much better on repeat playthroughs. It is a good modern take on the game. Though prison and the labyrinth sectios kinda suck. But I did not like the labyrinth in the original either.
4) Crow Country. Nothing really to elaborate on, it is a great love letter to classical survival horror.
3) Selaco. For an early access game, it is amazing. Combat is amazing, and I cannot wait for the story updates and chapter 2.
2) Dead Rising, the original. The first game is something really unique. Time and resource management, map comprehension, weapon variety, freedom of exploration, surprisingly engaging story. It is amazing. Survivor AI sucks, but you can manage it with proper equipment. I played the remaster as well, and while it has some quality of life changes, they dumbed the game down too much.
1) Tomb Raider 1-2. Never played them untill this year, and man, these games have aged beautifully outside of combat. The level design, puzzles, music, platforming. These games are amazing. Did not play the third game yet, heard that it takes a serious dive in quality, but I will get to it.
Honorable mentions go to Soul Reaver 1 and Hitman: World of Assanssination. Had a great time with both.
The only bad game I have played was Soul Reaver 2. It reminds me of playing DMC 2 after DMC 1. It is not THAT terrible, but the devs stripped it of everything I liked about the first one and replaced it with tedious combat and boring level design.
I thought Slipgate was just an overworked studio that took on way more work than they could handle. But seeing that they actually think their terrible attempts at exploiting boomer shooter nostalgia are good and critics are just haters is disappointing. Phantom Fury should've been the DNF 2001 we never got, instead it was DNF 2011 all over again.

Anyway, my GOTY was Mullet Madjack, which I tried the demo because of your video, and immediately felt in love...I was expecting it to be your #1 pick.
It's number one in that it's the best that actually came out last year. I think it's the first time I've given #1 to an old game.
2024 I really enjoyed my favorite from this year was Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
As a big fan of the original game (its my favorite of all time) this delivered in ways i didn't think was possible and I was very very happy. There was others i played too but id be here all day
Hope 2025 has something for everyone
they really did overuse the batmobile in AK, but overall the game was pretty damn good. story-wise maybe not that much, however the combat and open world were solid. it looked amazing back then and showed what UE3 is capable of in the hands of talented devs, hell it even looks great today. sad that the same studio who made the arkham trilogy fell so low and made gotham knights and suicide squad.
Solid? The gameplay is better than all the previous games. The batmobile was not overused, it was wrongly used. Only 15% of the game includes the batmobile, only 2 side missions actually require the batmobile to fully complete them. Every other side mission does not require the batmobile at all, or does not require it for 90% of the side mission. Less than 30% of riddler trophies are batmobile specific, and this less than 30% could be any percentage, just know it's not near 30, it's less than 30. You are correct on the graphics part, in fact graphics have remained stagnant since 2015. Arkham knight is one of the first games to achieve such an amazing look. What I mean by wrongly used is that instead of making this boss a tank battle, make them an actual boss. The batmobile was never overused as proven by the fact it takes up a minor portion of the game. They just happened to use it in the places where people really did not want them to use it.
12:58 oh boy. I just recently "borrowed" Graven to try it out and... well... I had to stop playing after about 10 minutes. Loved the art style, atmosphere and old school vibes. Unfortunately I couldn't stand the gameplay. Don't like the mage archetype to begin with and it did nothing to change my mind. Breaks my heart.

Mayo, out of curiosity when was the last time you played Silent Hill Downpour?
Not a criticism or anything, I just remember when the game released and understand most people simply haven't in over a decade by this point and am curious if replaying it would be in your interests. Not saying you have to, either, but sometimes I find it odd how out of Homecoming, Shattered Memories, Book of Memories and Origins, you seem to hate Downpour the most. Personally I despise Homecoming and what it did to the franchise because out of them all it seemed to have the most influence on movies and the future direction of the series in general despite being such a pain to play and failing to execute on anything "Silent Hill" (This was before the Silent Hill 2 Remake released which is now my most hated SH title simply for what it means for the rest of the franchise going forward and how praised it was for essentially crippling what made the OG so beloved).
I think Downpour is better than most give it credit for. Not nearly as good as the original 4 titles nor as bad as the aforementioned; it felt like it tried to learn from the mistakes of prior American SH titles and actually tried to have a Silent Hill style story with its biggest flaw being its enemy roster. Those are just my thoughts.
Here's hoping 2025 is better.
Three things mainly. The ridiculously nonsensical narrative with endings that make no sense. The complete lack of awareness and taste (see my video on the intro). And for me the greatest offense is that it's just so boring. The town itself is so goddamn dull. Running around it was agonizing. I remember laying on my side holding up on the controller to "explore" and barely staying awake.

Well, aside from the story. I'd say it's worth a second look though I can understand how it might not be immediately obvious what it's talking about.
The whole thing basically revolves around "Boogeymen" as a concept and how we create our own demons and project them onto others.
But that's also really hard to engage with when the game around it isn't pulling you in and that's definitely a criticism worth leveling.

Yes, because Downpour wasn't literally trying to be Silent Hill 2 Remake and calling Downpour a poor attempt at copying Silent Hill 2 is just wrong. Like, their plots are literally completely different, you're thinking of Homecoming when you say that. Like I have been saying, I don't love the game or anything, I just don't think it's worse than the other games around it at the time and I was curious why Mayo disliked it in particular.

Homeworld 1 is the most compelling game of all time imo. It's story isn't super deep it just speaks to your humanity. HW2 is not as good but serviceable.

dmc4 sadly doesn't hold up compared to 3. once you hit the halfway point and after playing another hour past that you will see why.

"The Silent Hill Phenomenon" that The Short Message and Ascension adhere to is a nonsense retcon that claims this is something that can happen anywhere as a psychological experience or whatever so they don't have to have any actually logic behind it. It craps all over the series' mythology.
It's not called "Resident Evil/Biohazard" which is ambiguous and can be used for various things. Silent Hill is literally the name of the town and that town has history and power.

If I had to guess(and I do), Team Silent would've likely gone with the simplest most logical explanation, magic is real in that world and that places like Silent Hill though rare and isolated do exist. i actually PARTLY agree with the silent hill 2 remake. it really did felt extremely bloated, in fact i had to stretch my playthrough over 3 days due to how tedious it was playing it in one sitting. BUT it was my first time experiencing silent hill 2 properly since i stopped playing the og sh2 shortly after the house section due to the dated graphics and gameplay, and for the first playthrough the story still grabbed me. they've done a fantastic job at that part. also i dont mind the gameplay, since the og gameplay was a big reason why i stopped playing it anyway

@underthemayo Path of Exile 2, an ARPG similar to the first two Diablos. I'm guessing it's outside your wheelhouse, similar to Wukong. I'd call Wukong an in-between between Sekiro and DMC, leaning more towards Sekiro, with an emphasis on boss fights. It was a nkce experience.
