Well, who's idea was it to combine all these players together. They come not only from the U.S. , Britain but from Ireland, Africa, Nepal, Jamaica and Japan... Simply beautiful.
"Playing for Change," which made this performance, is a charity that supports young people in learning music. They have other videos from around the world that you would enjoy hearing: "Gimme Shelter," "All Along the Watchtower," and so on.
Two videos were made about how "The Weight" video was made. You can find the first part at ua-cam.com/video/m7C6TlQC8Y8/v-deo.html and the second part at ua-cam.com/video/7AR1x0v7n-4/v-deo.html . I especially noticed when the producer said that Larkin Poe was the heart of every chorus because of their blues tone and Megan's slide guitar work. I love those two girls, and I wish everyone else could, too (and even though they were filmed in Venice, California, they're actually from Nashville, Tennessee).
We saw Larkin Poe back in March of this year in Austin. They are everything and much more... All genres are incorporated in their sound. I have 3 of their CD's and each one is just as good as the other 2. About to go get their newest one. A favorite song of theirs is "Preachin' Blues" ua-cam.com/video/cEWiJR9qeoc/v-deo.html
@David a Emswiler Amen to that. Now if the media would stop talking about our differences and focus on our similarities, folks would be in a better frame of mind all the way around.
Seeing other string instruments, the ukulele, the lute, the sitar was a revelation. I expected great singers from around the world, yet I especially liked the harmonies of the two female musicians from Venice Beach and also the two female vocalists from Jamaica singing the fifth verse. And the first male singer from South Carolina had a tough job filling Levon Helm's shoes and he was terrific as well. I thought it was beautifully mixed as well.
Gotta agree w you, especially re the Jamaican women and Larkin Poe (Venice)…the transitional harmony from Jamaica to them was almost tear jerkingly good. My favorite vid from the entire Playing For Change series.
WOW, this is truly the power of music! Not a smug look on anyone's face. they all looked like they really enjoyed it and it made me happy just full of joy (starting to sound like my hippie parents! LOL). Let's us all really know that music is absolutely universal....
WOW WOW WOW !!! LOVE IT Thank you so much Don for sharing this . What the world needs now is LOVE SWEET LOVE !!!! You have to go to Barcelona you will not be disappointed my son lives close to there and when I go visit I go through Barcelona Beautiful place, actually the whole country is.
Robbie Robertson. The Weight. Written 54 years ago. As brilliant , iconic and transcending a song as it's ever been. Songs of greatness are not written as flukes!
At 3:40 the Middle Eastern instrument from Bahrain is called an "oud". Similar to the mandolin or bouzouki which have 4 groupings of 2 strings, the oud has groupings of 3 strings. The instrument immediately after that is a sitar, used in music from the Indian subcontinent.
Larkin Poe are the two women in Venice Beach (although they are originally from Georgia) they are sisters, Rebecca & Megan Lovell. Megan is a wicked lap steel player.
Robbie Robertson has the sole writing credit for the song but it was a collaboration between him and the members of The Band. It is inspired by people they knew. Fun facts about this video. Lucas Nelson (Crazy Chester verse) is Willie Nelson's son. The girls in Jamaica are singing in front of Bob Marley's old home.
This is one of these rare moments when one pauses and is aware that we are all humans on this planet and cultural differences are stupid reasons for dividing us. Music is one of the rare threads that bring us together in a universal way. This is a wonderful performance by all. The guy you asked about was that a sitar, I don't know what that was but the guy who was next from I believe was Nepal was playing a sitar. By the way, The Beatles were the first ones too incorporate a sitar in a pop music song on a record with George Harrison playing one on John Lennon's Norwegian Wood from their lp Rubber Soul released on December 2, 1965. Great song from a great album, a really great album.
This, just this! Have always loved this song. Thanks for posting, Captain. Thanks for the work you put into these videos. Awesome, so awesome! The world can come together. Blessings.
I believe I recommended the Playing for Change channel several months ago..In my opinion this is only the 4th or 5th best of their videos. I highly recommend their Versions of “stand by me “by Ben E. King, “The times they are a changing“ And “all along the watchtower“ by Bob Dylan. But, far and away (and this is probably my all-time favorite video) their version of the Grateful Dead’s “ripple“ is absolutely amazing. Richard Gruver
I've seen this a few times and think it's an incredible rendition, of one of my top 10 favourite songs, from one of my op 10 favourite bands. (*"The Last Waltz"* will always be my favorite concert/documentary videos too...there's a great version of this song on there as well) *Playing For Change* has a bunch more videos on youtube, and they follow this format (but there is also *'album'* songs too). With songs like *"Stand By Me",* *"Biko",* and *"Take Me Home, Country Roads",* just to name a (very) few. So if you feel the urge, you'd have enough choice to do a monthly, or weekly, showcase of them . And it'd probably get more eyes on their cause, which according to my 'quick' google search,; *"Playing For Change, is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people."*
Sebastian was struggling with the format until Grammy Award nominated Larkin Poe got on board and presented him with the framework to build the song around.
I love the song, my favorite version to date was Daryl ( Daryls house videos etc ) . This one is not far behind. And with Lucas Nelson son of Willie Nelson a part of it
morning Don know the song didn't know the name, learned something new for the day can shut the brain down till tomorrow hope the haymaker is shinning on you HAKAD
Do yourself a musical favor and check out playing for change, they do this with many many artists and songs. There's a 50 year Aniversary of Sitin on the dock of the bay
Please review and rate Bob Dylan - Working mans blues. The studio version not the live. It was uploaded by Tony Clarke. It's a whole different song than Merle Haggard's "working man blues"
I hope by now you actually understand what Playing For Change is all about. The Band’s music was at the forefront of the birth of what we now call “Americana.” And Playing For Change is a non-profit promoting music education for young people. ALL OVER THE WORLD. The shack the two Jamaican ladies are singing in front is the birthplace of Bob Marley, in Trenchtown, Jamaica. Yes, it’s fantastic both musically and technology-wise. But what’s most important is what Playing For Change stands for and promotes: Peace and Human Understanding through Music.
Well hello Don. It’s been along time since I’ve said hi. And boy what a lucky gal to have picked this day. Because what I just witnessed here completely touched my heart ❤️ what a brilliant choice Don. And yes u made a really good point regarding the editing etc etc.. You and this collaboration of this always really bitchen song was a start of a beautiful and u caused it Mr. Don 👍😘
Hi Don, could you react to Jack Ingram "LOVE YOU" video, The Cadillac Three "THE SOUTH" video Dillon Carmichael "SAWIN' LOGS" Blaine Roy "PAPER AND PEN" Gretchen Wilson "THE GIRL I AM" HARDY "UNAPOLOGETICALLY COUNTRY AS HELL" TY sorry for long list thought you could pick one
A great video but ... The 50th Anniversary of this song? So where was Garth Hudson at? Him & his Lowery Keys should have been in this video. Other than Robbie, it's just Garth. Not even a quick cameo? Not right, man. Shame on whoever was in charge of this!
excellent, y’all
I listen twice
The instruments are beautiful
Every country , singing
Gets you in a good mood
Love those , smiles.

Uplifting song...this is the kind of healing the world needs.

Biko by Playing for Change is amazing too, and includes Peter Gabriel who wrote it

This concept of the song was definitely taken from the Band and The Staples version.
