- Funny how things work out... this was one of the most requested videos yesterday after doing The Band and Playing for Change for the first time. And it so happened to be that this was Bruce D's other pick for the months so I said to hell with waiting and dived right in. I've never heard the original this time though unlike "When The Levee Breaks" but this was an amazing song. I HAVE to listen to the original now.

Yes they were! Hello friend. I switched to YT premium. And it's worth it to avoid the commercials and play music in the background while I do other stuff online. The "do you want to continue watching Yes?" prompt that stopped the video got me, plus wow there's so many more commercials and commercial interruptions now, and some right in the middle of songs even. And the back to back commercials and commercials that can last more than 3 minutes 🤦♀️. Hope all is well.

I love Ringo. He’s just a really sweet, humble guy! That said, this a great choice. Great performance. I also just learned of Robbie’s death in 2023. I also never knew he was Canadian. I love expanding my musical knowledge. Fantastic! Love your reactions. 🌺✌️
All of them were Canadian, except Levon Helm. They came together in Ronnie Hawkins' backing band and continued after leaving him as Levon & The Hawks for a while, before Bob Dylan recruited them and started calling them "The Band"
The whole BAND was from Canada except Levon Helm who was from the south!
"Playing For Change" are so amazing, all the great songs played by people of different backgrounds, showing the harmonies possible, around our wonderful world. I am a huge supporter. The Band's original is great, & Live with the Staples Sisters is amazing too. This World version moves me like no other, since Robbie's passing.
The Band was absolutely special. They had what SOUNDED like a loosy-goosy, seat of your pants, jamming on the front porch style of almost pristine sloppiness (in the best way possible) where they whole-heartedly blended traditional folk, Americana, country, swamp rock, zydeco, blues, soul, bluegrass, God knows what else...and everything was so genuine, honest, heart on the sleeve and earthy... Momentarily you might compare them to Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young etc but 98% of the time, what you got from them you could ONLY get from them. You're literally not complete as a musician without knowing them.
I saw over 300 to 400 rock concert, and The Band concert I attended in 1993 is in my top 5 all concerts! Incredible band live. So loose… and so tight at the same time.
I saw the Band about the same time, without Robbie, in an opera house, almost every song they switched instruments, except Levon, so much talent.
Robbie’s solo stuff is amazing as well. And he will be missed at the R&R HOF, he was the main guy organizing the live music, and playing guitar when needed!
One of the purposes of playing for change, is to show that when people are making music together, they are not shooting each other.
The Weight was written by the late ,great Robbie Robertson in 1968 and recorded by The Band . The song sounds as good and fresh today in 2024 as when first composed 56 years ago and will be as good and fresh in another 50 years ! Class and quality always reaches the top ...as exemplified by this wonderful production of a bona fide all time classic tune .
Of course you know that Lukas Nelson is Willie Nelson's son...
And the producer, Sebastian Robertson, is Robbie's son.

Robbie Robertson started playing with Dylan when he just went electric in 1965. But The Band as a whole is on The Basement Tapes, Before The Flood (live album) and Planet Waves (if I recall correctly it's the 1968-1974 time period)
Ringo - the most underrated drummer not much flash but just really really good his fills are the best
The version of "The Weight" from "The Last Waltz" is the best (with a bonus)
Notable musicians in this video included Marcus King, and the Hawaiian superstar, John Cruz. Other insanely great "Playing for change" series videos (which, by the way, began before the pandemic); "Sitting by the Dock of the Bay" (the regular one, not the live one). "Oya Como Va", featuring Carlos Santana, his crazy fantastic drummer wife, and the young legend bass player, Tal Wilkenfield (who played with Jeff Beck for years before his passing). "Listen to the Music" (maybe the best one). "Skin Deep", featuring the legendary blues players Buddy Guy and Billy Branch. And "ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER"! Because that is probably actually the best one, with a few of the Neville brothers, and unique and beautiful Native American singing. I could go on and on about this series because it is just the BEST!
And thank you for getting into these because they truly are awesome. and they often have really superior percussion going on.

The Playing For Change videos are simply awesome for displaying how music unites us. You'd mentioned Jackson Browne at one point....his song Doctor My Eyes is among those that have gotten the Playing for Change treatment. They're all special though!

Music From Big Pink was recorded in Woodstock, where the Band lived (I think) and recorded in..a big Pink house. They also recorded The Basement Tapes with Bob Dylan.

Hutch Hutchinson! Haven't heard that name for a long while. He used to play with West Coast local legends John Cipollina and Greg Douglas in Copperhead and Raven and, I think, Terry & The Pirates around the mid to late 70s. Good to see he's still going.
In addition to their “Playing Around the World” videos, Playing for Change also has some concert videos from times that they put a band together to tour. Very international group of course. One of my favorite videos is their cover of CSNY's “Teach Your Children” from their concert in Brazil. From the same concert there's also a great cover of “Stand by Me.” You might find some other performances on UA-cam, but for both of these songs, I think the best rendition is the one labeled Live in Brazil.

I grew up about 40 minutes from the Six Nations reserve where Robbie spent summers with his mother's family. Garth, Rick and Richard were all from southern Ontario area, they don't make em like that anymore
Incredible and touching version of the Band's classic. Glad you enjoyed it. Pretty amazing production. Ringo and Robbie rocked this version. Hearing that dude riff on the sitar was awesome. Never heard a sitar rock with that even though George Harrison played some amazing sitar on several Beatles songs.
Nice, you did it directly. Fantastic! Robbie's sons birthday present to his Dad and when you see Robbie smile at the end, you can see how much he appreciated that. Btw the Ladies in Jamaica are standing in front of Bob Marleys house. And on the Last Waltz concert, there are only great performances both by The Band and the guest, be it Dylan, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters and on and on.

The original version of The Weight is on Music from Big Pink. The Band's 1st album. Definitely listen to that version, as well as the video from the Last Waltz. Another Band
song that is amazing is Acadian Driftwood, from the album Northern Lights Southern Cross.

This song I love better than the one from The Last Waltz but not by much. That it could have
world wide acclaim is amazing but it touches upon the tragedy of people not caring even for
those in their home town. Hearing the music being performed on so many different instruments
makes it priceless.

What a lot of people don`t know is The Band, except for Levon Helm, were all from Canada which is pretty interesting considering they built their reputation talking about American mythology. Just to mention - the first line of this tune starts out with "Pulled into Nazareth" - Nazareth is in Pennsylvania.

A lot of commenters are big on the version of The Weight from The Last Waltz, but I personally think the original studio version is the one to check out. It was The Band's first hit from their first album (Music From Big Pink), and it's a perfect example of the sound they developed that blew a lot of people away. Simple, down home, no pretensions, and an alternative to the psychedelic overkill of the time (not that there was anything wrong with psychedelia, but it did get overdone by some bands). Among other things, Music From Big Pink caused Eric Clapton to re-think his entire approach to playing guitar and music in general, and it led to him deciding to leave Cream and go in a different musical direction.
The first singer after Robbie is Marcus King. He is an incredible musician. Check him out.

Aretha Franklin does a great cover as well as the version from the Last Waltz with the Band and the Staple Singers.
Bob Dylan gave them the name @ The Band”, they were the back up band for Ronnie Hawkins and went by The Hawks, when they were working with Dylan in Woodstock, they played behind Bob, first show in Newport or Forrest Hills, Bob went to introduce them and realized they did not have a name so he just said “ The Band” and it stuck!
That is not exactly how it happened. Yes Dylan referred to them as The Band backing him up. However, when they wanted to go out on their own, they had to come up with a name. They, and Dylan were all living in Woodstock, N. Y. then. When members of The Band were out on the town, either alone or a group, people would make comments like "he's with The Band, or they aree The Band. When they had to come up with a name, they discussed it and several were mentioned, but then Rick Danko said "everyone calls us The Band, that is who we are, I don't even want to think about another name, that is silly". So the settled on The Band, and the rest is history.

Either way they became The Band. BTW Ronnie Hawkins played at The Last Waltz.
@@tommelle5074 I have watched The Last Waltz several times, and the story about how the got the name is from Robbie's book Testimony. Right after the left Hawkins, the called themselves The Hawks. However when it was time to choose a name, with the Vietnam war going strong, they thought The Hawks were too political, and they were mostly against the war, they could have settled on The Dove's but I gathered from Robbie's book they didn't want a name that was too political.
@@hannejeppesen1809 I own the 4 CD version of the Last Waltz with the rehearsals and the Movie. My source was Bob Dylan, and also watching a video of when Bob first introduced them, Robbie got a lot more political correct after he left the Group. You believe what you want, but I'll go by the story as it was said at the time.

IIRC this was Robbie's last project before he passed away. Organist Garth Hudson is The Band's sole surviving member.

Nothing was ever written solely by Robertson that was performed by the Band. It was all collaborative. Robbie's ego and the toxic dynamics of the industry lead to him getting credit for most of the Band's compositions. It's a major part of what broke them up, and so many other bands
This has been repeatedly debunked, most prominently by John Simon, their producer, and Jon Taplin, their road manager who was there every day.
Like the Bands version much better.
