#Guitar #Lesson #MKSB30
Gosh this song is so dynamic! Playing Mark's tunes in this format reveals a lot of the groove and dynamics, like Romeo & Juliet. You hear the studio version and is amazing, but you hear it like this and you get a better idea of why it is so.
The sax riff it's amazing, but I also pay atention to the harmony behind it. Good song and lesson.
Thank you. Yes, the harmony to me is sometimes even more important than flashy solos!
Wanted to play it in a higher key, and wanted to find a "simple" way to play it (as many open chords as possible).
I like to play it with capo on 2nd, stating in the Em shape. Just going to write the shapes I play, not taking capo in to account.
Intro/Chorus:
| Em [0220000] C [x32010] || Dsus2 [xx0230] Dsus2/C [x30230] |
| Bm7 [x24232] x2 || Cmaj7 [x35453] x2 |
| A [x02220] A/C# [x42220] || Dsus2 Dsus2/C |
| B7 [x24242] x2 || Cmaj7 B7 |
Verse:
| G [320003] x2 || G Am7 [x02010] |
| Dsus2 Em7 [022030] || Dsus2/F# [2x0230] E/G# [4x6400] |
| Am x2 || Am x2 |
|F9 [103243]x2 ||F9 or[x87888] x2 |
Pre chorus:
|C x2 || Dsus2 Dsus2/C |
| Bm7 x2 || Cadd9 [x32033] C' [x32013] |
|G x2 || Em7/B [x20000] C |
|Dsus2 Em7 || Dsus2/F# B7' [x21202] |
Not sure about the last B7, but it sounds ok... ish... A lot easier to play this way, and sounds fine, to me :)
Thanks, Pavel! Always wanted to know how to play that! Greetings from Austria!
Dear Pavel, thank you so much for the lesson, I really enjoy learning from you!
Marvelous playing man. Send you a big hug from LIMA-PERU. Cheers 🍺
Jesus what a chords 🤯
Thank you..the most amazing explanation and breakdown of a most incredible song. You've certainly given me something to work on. Brilliant
You are wonderful, Pavel!
You save the only relation who makes me happy, thanks
Mate, you play this so very beautifully. It's gonna take me days but at least I know the version I end up with is accurate. So beautiful. Thank you thank you thank you. Have wanted to play this since I was 10
I didn't ask for it but I was hoping long that you would do this one. Can't wait to see the video and start practicing my guitar!
totally awesome!!
Nailed it!!! I had some doubts and you cleared them all!!! Thanks bro!!!
Every sax guy must try this tune when buying a new saxophone :D
Seriously, tho it's not 'a guitar composition', it's still one of the best works of Mark. One of the absolute favourites.
Excellent lesson, as usual, bravo, Pavel.
This song is a milestone for sure.
Wow, great!
Great Pavel ! your a masterpiece yourself mate !
Great class!
Just perfect
Great!
Great, great lesson. Thank you!
Respect. You are very inspire and motivated.
Well done good man
Love this ..thanks very much 🙏🏻
Great tutorial man!! Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you!
Awesome Thank-you 👌
Amazing
thanks for this, you've just unlocked so many new voicings for me!!
Love all your post...you really show the Master that Mark Knopfler is not only in guitar solo but in his way of building a song, how he's using music theory...great job my friend !!!!!😊😊😊
Thanks so much! Yes, the man is genius indeed.
Just realized that I forgot to comment on this video!! I really cant believe I let that happen, as this is one of my absolute favorite DS era songs.
At the risk of sounding redundant, you have done another beautiful song breakdown, thorough as usual, and I cant wait to learn and practice all the new chords.
Thanks again for sharing Pavel, and for all of your hard work on this project! It is very much appreciated.... all around the world, im sure!
Damn! ... thats all I can say... in a good way!Gonna be FUN workin thru this!🙏
You're a true artist 👏👏👏
Wonderful stuff. Looking forward to the next one already.
Me too!
You're doing a so good job : thanks for the time, the expertise, the way you share : with gratitude, friendly : thank you so much !

oh heck trying to learn this its so beautiful just to listen to
thanks for this!!! great!!
I love it.
I keep listening to this ! it sounds incredible man, I wish you can teach me one to one !!!
Wow! Terrific lesson, as always. Thanks very much!
Thanks for saying thanks!
Amazing my friend, pretty good !
Wow I just found this. Man, that's great. I've always absolutely loved this album. I received the album as a gift for my 12th birthday on March 15, 1986. At the time, I paid attention to the first 3 songs. Then, not long after, I started listening to the whole album and it is a masterpiece.
I still own that very cassette tape I got in 1986. It's almost 36 years ago. I think the album was released in 1985??
Anyway, again, nice playing. Cheers from Miramichi.
I'm glad you put this up, great song and heard a cover but just too much for me to figure out on my own. It will take time but this can be my new project song. Worth a subscribe for sure! Thank you.
Great, another great lesson with precious tips. I could not help but notice the sequence (LOG, PD and now, YLT), both have something in common, the contruction of it reveal a greater complexity in chords in relation to the songs between 78/80, bring something even more refined. Anyway ... this is the richness of Knopfler's work. Congratulations again, your work is quite learned, because it is an x-ray of each song.
A hug from Brazil!
Love that x-ray each reference time :)
Thanks, yeah the complexity of these three songs just stunning. And what about beasts like Telegraph Road?
Really nice development of chords to this song. :D Hand up! :)
Nice , nice!
Thank you Pavel!
Thank you!
Always worth breaking sanctions for this guy. 😀
Good Work
very nice!!!
Bravissimo!
Sensacional!!
Only two words for that: PER FECT.
Thank you pavel
Thank you!
mate, this amazing ! you are the little Mark Knopfler
Microscopic, to be precise! Thank you.
Very well done. Thanks.
The original recording has the great Michael Brecker on Tenor sax and the also great Randy Brecker on trumpet on the intro. Great song.
You the best , a billion of thanks ...
You're welcome!
Amazing i love this !!! i have played this over and over and over and over and over !!! please do Dream of the submariner !!!!!!!
Thank you Pavel :)
Very nice lesson. I enjoyed your quiet and informative way of teaching and of course your guitar skills. Great quality lesson!
Instead of F#m9b5 you can play a G#7#5 it’s about the same chord and it’s very close to G#7 so the change is subtle but beautiful
Thank you again, Pavel! I've been wanting to learn this so badly...Somebody should make you a statue!
Now that's you can call a comment! Haha! Thank you.
great! great! great!!
Thank you! And thanks for a live video of YLT I took from your channel!
from 2002 ?
Yup, from 12:11
Yeah.. now i see! Very pleased. I really adore both versions! Although on Les Paul it sounds little bit rude :) By the way i recently posted version ´2002 in correct proportions :)

Thanks a lot PAvel for this great tutorial, you are an amazing musician and your guitar sounds just awesome, by the way what is that guitar?
What a fantastic video and tutorial with very clear explanations and interesting trivia. Will be watching all your other ones too. Nice Advanced Jumbo! Is it a standard one or Luthier's choice?
You're welcome Nick, thanks. My Advanced Jumbo is a perfectly ordinary guitar, the cheapest one, not a single outstanding feature here like woods, Luthier's choice, banner, etc. Just a simple reissue.
Hello, Pavel. Could you please do The Kingdom of Gold? Such a nice ballad of Mark!
Fantastic playing 👌🏼
What acoustic is that please?
totally boss
Hey man great work, subbed! Theres a video of the keyboard player playing the part on youtube, he plays f#m7b5 from what i can tell. Also a lot of the major chords he is playing add9 ... its worth a watch!
I find playing Am6 like this [x04554] works well.
"Boa noite meu consagrado"
Great cover and great lesson....do you play electric guitar too or only acoustic with chords?...anyway it's really sweet to my ears ! Thanx a lot !!!
Thanks! I have an electric guitar, but for the sake of simplicity I record all my lessons on acoustic, because you - hear everything as clear as possible and I - don't need to mess with a lot of equipment. Just set up three microphones, one for the voice and two for guitars and do it.
Yes you're right, the sound of your guitar and your voice are perfect, it's really comfortable to learn and to understand all you explain...more you speak slowly...I' m always impressed by the Mark 's compositions, he always mix simple chords, with some chords really jazzy here...and the result is just spectacular...Mark is a great solo player but a really awsome composer and his knoweldge of chords theory is really without bounderies...Thanx again Pavel and I hope you ll continue to make good videos like these on line ! ;-)
I'm more of a visual learner, if you call it like that :D so i appreciate your camera angles.
I have learnd so many songs from mark through you :) very big thank you
With Your Latest Trick i think ive reached the point where i have to get into music theory.. :P
can you recommend me books or videos?
I think any study of chords will do, I never read any books on music theory, and don't have the professional knowledge of it, just the basics. And it's the basics that are the most interesting to learn, just how the chord is constructed. All those additional steps, symbols, names.
Olá meu consagrado
Bom dia meu consagrado.
Lukas Lukas Lukas Lukas Lukas Lukas 👌
BOA NOITE MEUS CONSAGRADOS
F# minor9b5 would be
e 4
b x
G 2
D 2
A 3
E 2
Just barr it at the second fret and either mute or dont play the b string
Which guitar is it?
Does anybody know what is the embelishment Mark Always plays after "well now my door was standing open"?
x-7-4-x-x-x ; x-7-6-x-x-x or with full Esus2/ E major chord in this position
There are only two chords in the 6th compass on the Verse (that you put a E & F#m) were I’m hearing E/G# and A...I know they are pretty similar E with a major 3rd on the bass and A is the major relative to F#m...please hear it again and correct me if I’m wrong. 😉
Absolutely... Right away I say it's a piano song, that means voicings AND chords go all over the place. It can be E/G# and A indeed, because the chords are so similar to E and F#m, the piano (or keyboards) makes this similarity extremely hard to pinpoint, so the result is different chords. The same story with all the classic mostly keyboard songs, they can be played in a lot of ways.
Pavel Fomenkov thank you very much for your feedback!!! You said it all!!! 💥👊😉
Bom dia meu condecorado
Qual modelo do violão?
Next will be Telegraph Road or Where do you think you're going :P
link to tab is dead!
Works for me!
lol sorry it's working now. must have been a glitch earlier. thanks for this lesson!
Not bad, mostly correct chords, but there are better positions (and more "guitar-wise") to play this song.
Hey thanks Tomi! I'm aware of both of these things ;)
I'm glad that you are. To me, this is best song from "Brothers In Arms".
Btw, on last night gig I've played "True Love Will Never Fade".
I have to take some time to check out your channel. Bravo!
This guy can't sing for sure but sure good has guitar skills and the teaching talent.
Second language, so it's a billion times better than I, or probably you can do.
He should not let the letters be on top of his explanation chords. We can't se the cords!!
