Bill Belichick, Matt Patricia, Bill O’Brien, Joe Judge, and Josh McDaniels are all the same. One coach had Tom Brady so his win total is different. The Patriot Way exists in failure 100%.
As an English football fan, this reminds me a lot of the end of Arsene Wenger's reign at Arsenal - one person who controls everything but has massive blindspots and maybe hasn't adapted to the way the modern game operates. The man in charge is such an institutional figure that it seems wrong to fire them, and they've got too much pride to quit while they're not too far behind.
What I got from it is that Mac Jones doesn't trust Vederian Lowe at all. He threw the Jets ball off his back foot because he didn't want to take a hit from Lowe's rusher. When he saw Parsons get washed down by Lowe he scrambled to the vacated edge, even though there was no one open on that side. Calvin Anderson might be the best option on the roster but he needs to get healthy
@@danielwaters191 I have to agree. Once you lose trust in your teammates it's only going downhill from there. Very hard to turn it around especially in the middle of the season.
Hey man, our team has dominated for 2 decades straight, we all knew it would eventually come to this. Just remember the great times and the absolute dominance that no other team will ever get to experience. They will rebuild again someday, but just be happy that you got to experience 6 super bowls and Tom Brady. They are the only team since 2000 that hasn’t suffered an abysmal season…it’s our turn. We’ll be back someday. No one can take the banners away. Just be patient.
Those are beta excuses. They could at least make sure the o line is good . Even if the qb is bad and no wrs. The reason for this happening is offensive coaching and roster building. Don't think Mac Jones is that bad, just got a fear of getting wrecked non stop
Definitely surprising, but not that much because the personnel aren't really better. The offense is basically the same aside from downgrading from Jakobi to Juju, and now the OL is way worse and Mac is also mentally rattled because of it. The one thing I expected from BoB was to use the 3 TEs a lot but they aren't really seeing significant usage for an offense with such a poor group of WRs. Problem is that no one on the offense can beat man coverage(Henry, Bourne, and Parker are all bottom 15 in WR separation on NextGenStats. Parker is 2nd to last). His OL is 32nd in pass-blocking and supporting a bottom 5 run game in yds/attempt. One hugely overlooked aspect to these offensive failures is loss of coaches. Since 2017 they have lost coaches at such a high rate that they have not had time to replace and develop people in those positions, which is easier than hiring from outside, especially in Belichick's past. This is why Patricia ended up as OC and OL coach in the first place. When McDaniels left for Vegas, he took OL coach Carmen Bricillo, assistant Bo Hardegree, and WR coach Mick Lombardi. The QB coach Jedd Fish left for a job at University of Arizona a year prior. When Flores left, he took WR coach Chad Oshea and DB's coach Josh Boyer with him. Dante Scarnecchia and Ivan Fears, long time OL and RB coaches both retired, as did Bill's right hand man Ernie Adams. Daboll was there for half a decade before Bama/Buffalo/NYG. They also lost Ossenfort/Caserio/Ziegler in the front office. Sorry for such a long-winded explanation lol. There's more to it than this even, which shows how hard it is to win.
It's not. The offensive line was functional last season. The starting guards are injured and Mike Onwenu looked horrible even when he did play. Plus they had Meyers and Henry as third down options. Now it's just Henry.
I think you mostly nailed it. They shouldn't be this bad but everything being bad simultaneously is making everything worse. I would add that the run game is non-existent, so that adds to Mac's issues because it's all on him to move the offense. I also want to say up top that I would keep Belichick because he has tried to adapt somewhat to the modern NFL. His 2022 draft and offseason showed he wanted to transition to a Shanahan style system, but it just didn't work because Patricia. With a real OC, who Belichick got after immediately realizing his mistake, they could try something like that again. He always knows where his roster weaknesses are and will address them this offseason if they give him a chance. They just had a lot to address this past offseason and didn't want to overpay guys like McGlinchey or draft a tackle in a weak class. I think each section was pretty accurate but, since this is my favorite team, I'll just add a few things: Supporting cast - the offensive line has no communication because they're constantly shuffling guys due to injuries. They have had five O-line combinations in five weeks. Plus, Atonio Mafi and Sidy Sow, two day 3 rookies, have had to start. That is not going to be functional. David Andrews and Trent Brown have been good, but that's not enough. As for the pass catchers, like you said, Bourne is good when he's not asked to be the WR1. Douglas has been getting open but doesn't get many snaps (for some reason). Juju and Parker can't separate, but Parker has always been their jump ball guy. Unfortunately he isn't winning those this season so it isn't helping. Maybe Thornton and Boutte can inject some life into the receiving core but I doubt it. I think you're underrating Henry a bit, because he's been very reliable this season, and Gesicki has been getting open but they're not targeting him. Overall, I think the pass catching group is a similar caliber as 2021, though, so it shouldn't be this bad. Mac - I feel so bad for Mac. He showed so much promise in his rookie season with a similar receiving core. But he isn't stepping into his throws anymore because he's afraid of getting hit and, like you said, he isn't talented enough to make up for the lack of receiving and O-line talent. He has lost what made him good, which is accurate, on time throws. And that's sad because he showed a lot of ability to do that in his rookie season. His mobility is not as bad as people say, but it's obviously not great and not enough to make up for missing so many throws. His turnover luck is genuinely shitty, because 50% of his turnovers becoming defensive scores is literally just bad luck, but he can't have that many turnovers in the first place. He is a bottom 5 QB right now, which is not where I thought he'd be, and I wouldn't blame them if they drafted a rookie QB in a strong class and made him be the backup from now on. Coaching staff - Adrian Klemm, the new O-line coach, is one of my top 3 biggest disappointments this season (the others are Onwenu and Mondre). I figured anything would be an upgrade over Patricia as the O-line coach, and it might be because he's new and dealing with so many personnel changes, but he doesn't seem to be doing much. Bill O-Brien seems to be fine because there are opportunities, but he needs to get the run game going because asking Mac to shoulder the entire offensive workload is not going to work. Belichick is still the GOAT HC to me because any other coach dealing with missing their top 3-4 CBs would look way worse. They held the Cowboys and Dolphins offenses to 24 points in that situation. No one else can do that. I think Belichick is trying to build a team the way they did with Tom Brady and hoping Mac can develop. It hasn't worked unfortunately, and it has cost them. I don't think the narrative that Mac and the Patriots don't trust each other is true, though. He has stood behind Mac the entire way, and if they do draft a rookie QB I would want him as the HC to give that person a great situation. It's a lot, like you said. Hopefully they can get some guys like Courtland Sutton and/or La'el Collins to improve but they should probably just rebuild entirely.
Respect to this reasonable non over the top post. Also will The patriots have chance to right alot of these wrongs not only in this season but also in the offseason due to cap space, and draft capital. The defense is stacked i would say outside of needing a real run stopping forceful DE. Barmore is more your pass rush DT but not much in Run.
Even if its the same group as 2021 for the most part, I think its 'bad' just because regression being a thing along with the other injuries that help make the run/pass offense work. And many of the bonehead decisions Mac has been making I feel is off trust. He can't be expected the carry the offense consistently without better athletes around him and that was the case with his years in Bama. If Bill wants a QB who is going to be 'above and beyond', then that guy isn't sitting at 15th in the 2021 draft class. Arguably that QB wasn't in pick 2-3 either so that is comforting.
The problem with rebuilding is most teams start way too late. The pats should’ve gone full build after Brady left. Brady left BECAUSE they had no talent left. He also saw the bills and dolphins becoming a bigger threat. He saw the writing on the wall. That team needed a rebuild. He also saw a certain team that had already rebuilt and was in a weaker devision. Bill was being stubborn. He thought he could win without Brady. And he’s not wrong. He could. If he had a good team. He thought all he needed was a few pieces. The broncos made the same mistake. They’re both in the same boat now.
What has Bill done though, as a head coach in his career without Brady at center? He's got a losing record, he's only won a single playoff game, 29 years ago, after this season he'll have missed the playoffs 3 of the last 4 years. Once Brady left, his time should have come to an end in New England.
_"Brady left BECAUSE they had no talent left."_ This sounds good now, but it's 100% false. Brady was perfectly willing to stay for the right price. Look it up.
This. The Patriots were already in trouble during Brady's last years because they never restocked the wide receiver position and Scar couldn't coach the O line forever.
The biggest takeaway I had from Mac’s rookie season was his composure in the pocket and under pressure. It feels like with the deterioration of the OL and lack of weapons, he’s become extremely gun-shy. Hopefully he isn’t full-on ruined like David Carr.
@@odcoordinator1780 That would be dreadful. Especially if it were all part of Evil Emperor Belichick's masterplan to let the team get so terrible that they are a shoo in for the #1 pick and next "can't miss" QB Caleb Williams. I shudder to think of 2 more decades of the Patriots dominating the NFL. Of course that's unrealistic. No coach/GM would intentionally be so bad at their job that they secure the #1 pick at the risk of losing their fanbase, locker room, and even their job.
@@odcoordinator1780 if the pats do get the first pick of the draft we'll probably select a db or an ol because why not. If we do select Williams then the rest of the picks will be not skill position players to help him in the passing game.
The only reason the Patriots dominated two decades of the NFL is Tom Brady. Bill Belichick didn't even try to find a replacement, and Mac Jones seems like a bust.
Brady was the offense and Bill the defense, boosted by an OL coached by Dante. It was a perfect balance. With Brady they lost the offense. We know McDaniels isn't shit.
That is not the whole story, cheating through SpyGate and DeflateGate will never be forgot. Even back in the day, in 1982 the infamous snowplow game, cheaters through and through. SMH
@@erick_ftw LOL, sure pal. Tom Brady purposefully DESTROYED his cell phone rather than turn it over to the NFL investigator, because Brady was innocent and there was nothing to see. Lucky for him it was a football investigation and not a criminal investigation because destroying evidence is criminal and every normal person with a fully functioning brain knows you destroy evidence when your guilty, not when you are innocent of the charges. No tears either, just disgust for subhuman beings that lack any form of honor or integrity. Karma has come home to roost, let's all love this as no one in their right mind wants to play for that horrible old man anymore. Belicheat, your days are numbered!
Great breakdown Brett. Lifelong Pats fan here and I was just saying last week, without the benefit of stats or the all-22, that we had the worst offense in the league. I've seen the Pats' lows, highs and now this low. While I'd love to say that 6 Superbowls will make someone not care about a bad season, it's win every year baby! 🙂 Won't be this year for sure. Cheers!
Nah this year was a moment of truth for the Pats after setting the bar low on offense. Sure there was a scenario where the O-line held steady and Thornton wasn't as banged up which could help the Pats only to a measly 5-5 record before week 10 with how much difficult their schedule is this year. But I didn't see them trying to threaten the playoffs this season unless other favorable factors came up for the AFC East.
It's healthy to hit rock bottom every so often. It really accelerates the process of bringing about change to the organization for the better. It may seem counterintuitive, but this is actually a good thing for the Pats in the long run.
We tell ourselves that we want Brett to highlight great play, great players, and great teams; but we all know these are the videos we click on fastest.
Agree. A total rebuild is needed. Patriots have the worst receiving corps in NFL, along with the Giants and maybe Colts. Panthers have Thelin at least. Their OL is sub average, with no depth. Agree Mac is not the answer though. Bill is still good at X's and O's, but you are right he should not be the GM. The good news is rebuilds don't need to take 10 years like they did back in the 1990s. Some teams have really turned things around in 2-3 seasons. New England could do the same. But they need a LOT of change, and a LOT of work.
Hi Brett, im a fan of your content, to me the main problem is Belichick, for years he could draft average players because Brady could make it work most of the time somehow, problem he now has is he doesn't have Brady and Mac Jones sure as he'll isn't Tom Brady, I won't pile on the guy but at best hes an average NFL QB,, Bill hasn't changed his drafting philosophy and hes still drafting very average offensive players, he no longer has a guy who can get rid of the ball early and can pick the best option quickly, at the very least Bob Kraft should ask Bill not to be GM anymore and bring a guy in for GM and just let Bill coach, if he won't do it, they should wave goodbye to Bill
Not many qbs can make cashier, converted Qbs and lacrosse players competitive players We keep reaching for defensive smart players, I love dugger but we don’t need him more than a deebo Samuel or aj brown
@@oathbreaking I genuinely think it might be time for you guys to move on from Belichick, he's had a fantastic run and was the coach of in my opinion the greatest dynasty ever (2 decades, in a time when the salary cap was supposed to make dynasties almost impossible) he'll always be a legend but sometimes even legends have to move on
He drafted and traded for some absolute GEMS in the past. Beyond Brady, which "Bill the GM" gets credit for? Randy Moss, Gronk, Welker, Harrison, Edelman, Ghost, Branch, Seymour, Samuel, Mankins, Wilfork, Washington, C Dog, Hightower, C. Jones, Butler, Revis Island (WTF x infinity for jets fans on this one), Talib, Slater, Hernandez (stellar player when he wasn't murdering),
@@shaunmcisaac782 he did in the past but not so many in recent years, but even if someone's a legend they have an expiry date, I just really think it's time for the Patriots to move on with a new head coach and a new GM, I thought he should have retired when Brady left, his legacy is sealed 6 Lombardis, and a 2 decade dynasty, incredible achievements
That also happened to Bill Walsh. After the 1984 SB Bill added the new title of President where he oversaw both the team as well as the front office business. The Niners didn't really make to the SB again until owner Eddie D. stripped him of the President and forced him to only concentrate on football matters. It worked as the Niners returned and won the SB in 89. But Bill was hurt by Eddie Ds action so he retired immediately after that game.
The explanation on the first segment (patriots Oline compared to chiefs) was so easy to understand and made so much sense. Bravo and thank you for explaining football like that
Best football UA-camr imo. Breakdowns are super informative and easy to digest. As a Giants fan, I'd love a breakdown about why they're so terrible this year :)
As a patriots fan this breaks my heart, after 2021 i feel like we shower a great deal of promise for the future. But last year shit just got off the rails. The struggles with patricia really derailed macs development and now we're to the point of no return. Outside of rhamondre stevenson and practically the entire defense, we need to start brand new with new faces and new attitudes.
@@williamli6200 i dont believe in bill, its about time he retires. Hes had a great career but his coaching style if far too outdated for the league. We need to change the culture in NE
@@julianreid6030 The culture is *high QUALITY plays from QB with a CHEAP squad.* That is what Brady did for Belichick, since 2001. If Belichick had such a QB in last 3 seasons, the id10t would still look like a genius.
Agreed on this. But you can see from year 1 Mac Jones has what it takes when he has competent coaching around him. He needs coaching and he needs a team, the OL isn't doing their jobs, the receivers aren't doing their jobs. Jones is taking some brutal hits back there. He's showing shell shock and still has a 64.2% completion rate. Like watching a QB play for the Browns, you cant throw a QB into a Blender and expect he wont be unharmed.
Here we have a classic case of over analyzing what is simple. Belichick is a sub .500 coach. That is his mean demonstrated by the entirety of his coaching tree and personal resume without Brady. Its blatantly obvious. The only thing to be learned here is how much better Brady was than anyone really thought as he elevated bottom of the league offenses into top of the league offenses. Thats really it. The game didnt pass Bill by he never had a grasp on it to begin with. He put the lions share of assets into the defense consistently only to produce a good never truly elite defense of his own construction. When he had Parcells and Carolls players he had the closest thing to an elite defense he would ever reach. His fundamental team building philosophy is broken demonstrated by his and his trees results. His coaching philosophy only works with the greatest offensive player to have ever existed which is Brady.
The thing is, you ask a lot when the man has to run for his life to extend plays to trust his O-line in the few situations it holds up. He does throw WAY too often across the field and teams take advantage of it
Worst offense in the NFL? That' can't be true Dak Prescott is still starting for Dallas and Mike McCarthy is still calling plays for the Cowboy offense... Seriously though... it's nice to see the clock finally struck 12 for Bill and that he has finally turned back into a pumpkin. The man literally has exactly 2 winning seasons in 27 years of coaching where Tom Brady wasn't the starter. I'm not kidding go look it up, 9 seasons without Brady and only 2 winning records without him. It's not that the game passed the man by or that he has too much control as GM it's that Brady had enough talent to carry the offense and that allowed Bill just to focus on the defense which he really is pretty good at. But as a head coach he has never proven that he could win without a generational talent like Brady at QB.
@@peteyprimo7173 that was a typo. It's fixed. It was supposed to read 9 seasons without him and 2 winning records without him. Pretty likely to be 2 out of 10 after this year.
Bill shouldn't be fired as coach. But he needs to either step down or be relieved of his GM role. I personally think that doing that could save them from folding altogether.
Not going to happen. It's all or nothing - lose the GM and you lose the coach too. And as BB has been _de facto_ GM since 2001 anyway, ditching the greatest coach ever for the sake of a title change that will achieve nothing is an idea only football fans and children are dumb enough to support.
@@cisium1184 BB has been defacto GM but its not like he wasn't down to work with FO/scouting guys to have a better profile of talents that would be available and can play in the system. Which is why guys like Scott Pioli/Nick Caserio/Monti Ossenfort moved on to take bigger roles in other franchises to prove their eye for talent and build a team on their terms.
Bill literally let the 1 good WR that he's drafted in his whole entire career walk out the door over personal feelings and to spite his QB that says all u need to know about him needing to be the coach going further
You know, when Tom Brady left, we heard he wasn't going to be able to do anything because the "genius" of Belichek is what made him so good. And he no longer has Belichek with him. Well, since Brady left, Brady has a ring while the Patriots have gone downhill more and more everybyear. MAYBE, just maybe it was Brady who had more of an impact than Belichek.
Imagine watching Mac Jones shine w/ elite weaponry at Alabama, just to fail to put anything around him that resembled what he looked like at his absolute best.
Fantastic video Brett. You break things down in a way that makes them so easy to understand while being complex and informative. For casual fans its hard to understand what has gone wrong with the Patriots but the nuance of explaining all the different failures and how they react with each other is great, it makes so much more sense.
The play at 10:00 I recognized from the Wildcard blowout in Buffalo a few years ago. I saw the receiver come wide open and then Mac left the throw 10 yards short and it got picked. Same exact play. Nearly the same ball placement
You nailed it at the end. It is a confluence of problems making each other worse. However, literally the easiest fix is replacing Jones, because you can find a better (maybe not very good but better) quarterback-easily-than find multiple O-Linemen that can stay healthy or multiple receivers. But with the loss of their two best defensive players, the season is over with, so they might as well try something.
Do you mean finding a better quarterback in the draft, or right now? Draft-wise, what quarterback *after the first round* is better than Jones? And if right now, who's better that they can get? Also, "not very good but better" moves you from 6-11 to 8-9, maybe. Which...does *what* for you, exactly? Aside from that fans are irrelevant to team success, I'm genuinely curious as to a bit more detail in your thoughts, because...I think it's interesting! What *would* you do as the GM?
@@Eidenhoek At this point any vet is better than Jones. The hang up with Jones is that his confidence is so shot up that he doesn't trust the team will put him a good position to do his job on the field. Its sorta like the Jets with Wilson. The moment Rodgers is healthy and comes back, Wilson is just an afterthought.
Who could they trade for and/or who could they draft past the first round (since I don't want to speculate on draft position, so I will assume they *don't* get a high-prospect QB), that would *make this team into a division contender*? How is...Iunno, Kyler Murray, going to make this offense consistently good? If there are poor weapons and a poor scheme, there's not really a *point* to improving at quarterback when the outcome is the same as now, but a worst draft.@@t4d0W
Great job breaking down the O-line play. I would love a deeper dive on the offensive coaching/play calling. I often feel like its a big part of the problem when teams sputter this hard. If the offense is poorly coached, and poorly drafted/managed, then change does need to start from the top down. I think Belichek is used to getting players cheap because they were willing to play for less on a Superbowl contender team. Now he’s just being stubborn and cheap and its hurting the team.
Start with the O line. A cigar store Indian has more mobility than Trent Brown. Mac Jones sucks. Constant poor decisions on his part has lead to numerous pick-6's. Don't discount Belichick's stubbornness. He's has never taken ownership of all the terrible draft choices and the loses of good players because he won't pay them what they're worth. Bob Kraft needs to thank BB for all past Championships, then show him the door.
THANK YOU BRETT. New England Media is a horror show and the fan base on the whole has been the "Pancakes and Waffles" tweet when it comes to blame. I've been on Bill's needed to go since 2019, when it came out he was going to trade Gronk to the Lions if not for Brady and Kraft stepping in. Bill just has not adapted to the modern NFL in any meaningful way, which includes defense because any QB that can move he can't figure out. It's just time for the big red button in NEW and I hope it happens ASAP
LMAO Bill hasn't adapted to the modern NFL with defense? His multi-safety approach along with the payoff for what Dugger turned out to be has done pretty well with the metrics to show for. Thing is you can't just sit on defense in this modern NFL like in past decades. The offense has to be able to score efficiently and take the match ups. Otherwise BB is constantly handing early pass scripts to Mac Jones/BoB (the OC) to try get the team back out of a deficit by half time!
@@t4d0W I’m glad his multi safety approach has been great but all Dugger does now is sit back as a free safety in a contract year when he’s best suited to be a TE Eraser/ LoS monster. So because there was no plan whatsoever to replace McCourty another young player is having their earning potential sewered by Bill. Failure to adapt to the modern game applies to 2019 when the defense faced any sort of QB that could move and it did nothing. That didn’t change in 2020, 2021, 2022, and now 2023. The team on the whole lacks the speed to make plays on offense and defense, and while Bill, Steve Belichick, and Jerod Mayo can draw up great scheme, it just doesn’t matter if it’s Dugger and a bunch of 4.7 40’s out there. I know Gonzales and Judon got hurt but the team’s flaws run deep. So yeah, he can adapt as a defensive coach somewhat to modern scheme and still pull out stuff that can confuse mediocre and below QB’s, but he has not adapted to the personnel requirements great teams have to have in the modern game to be successful. None of this is excusing the poor play of players with expectations of course, just the reality of the situation that the entire roster is poor overall, and it’s poorly coached on the offensive side of the ball to an extreme degree. The team needs a reset in the worst way
Bill needs to have someone else GM because I still think he can coach. It’s just the personnel isn’t even close to talented enough for what it takes to compete in todays league.
@@t4d0Whis defense was lit up by the Bills at the end of the 2021 regular season and then he adjusted in the wildcard matchup by proceeding to have the worst defensive performance in NFL history… allowed a TD on every single drive! Not 1 FG, punt, turnover, nothing, just TDs. Allen even had more TD passes than incompletions.
On Mac's interception, it's even worse as he has a touchdown over the top if he goes deep. Where you have it paused at 13:42, he's got a receiver with 2 yards of separation in front of a stumbling DB with no one behind him at the 23 yard line

The problem with this analysis is that four weeks ago everyone, including you, was saying something different about them. They were going to be better, they were going to be dangerous. Why should we believe you now?
Because now we have actual games to analyze and break down. Over summer, based on past results from Mac, O’Brien, the OL, etc, we can only estimate what we *think* we are going to see. But now after seeing them actually play, they are falling short of our hopeful expectations. And this video is explaining why that is.
as a pats fan im so happy u made this. so many pats fans cannot understand that its kinda everyone's fault. i feel like week in week out pats twitter has to blame only ONE person, mac or bill or the WRs or the OL and its so frustrating bc its legit all, mac lost his confidence he had, he lost his weapons. he lost his Oline, and most importantly he lost a OC who put him in the best spots with players put in spots to help him. i think the game has started to pass bill and while ill forever love him as the best coach of all time he's clearly a D coach and nothing more. hopefully the rebuild isn't TOOOO long
IMO the rebuild can be as long depending on how quick BB gets himself the franchise QB of the future. So far its been the case for other recent franchises who made dramatic and quick turn arounds. Bengals were absolutely bunglin' until they got Burrow and managed to get Higgins. Then Chase landed to them the year after. Jags def look different with an offense ran by Trevor Lawrence. Hell CJ Stroud is also giving the Texans offense a new look with headroom to be better. Hell its hard to catchup to the playoffs in the AFC East when they have Josh Alien and Tua and the Turbo Fins.
the fact that the steelers have almost the same problems as us(I said almost) and they're somehow 6-4 will forever keep them the luckiest team in the NFL in my eyes
Tom Brady covered Bill's ass for years. That guy's a good coach, but a *terrible* GM, especially when it comes to offensive skill position players. Randy Moss was his only hit in a decade, and Tom still got them 6 super bowls.
Brandin Cooks was a hit too but Brady didn't begin believing in Brandin Cooks until the texans game in 2017. Belichick needs to understand that he will never find himself a quarterback like Brady again who can cook with average receivers. Belichick as the GM was never in question when Brady was still there. Hilarious how it is now.
Brady covered up Bill on offense for sure. Still, even now, Bill is a top defensive mind. He needs an OC who will throw something different at the board because O’Brien and Patricia both sucked.
Honestly, I feel sorry for Mac Jones. Yes he has played bad but at the same time this is all on Bill Belichick for not putting the necessary pieces around a Young quarterback who's on a rookie contract.

Which is why I never felt BB got the most of Mac on offense. Because he never matched the type of talent Mac played when he was most successful on offense (which was at Bama). However I don't think BB was willing to give up heavy assets to get a Tee Higgins caliber talent for Mac. As well with how bad the O-line depth overall is. Even then I don't think that is enough to meet 'base line' playoff expectations against the Bills and the Fins in a stacked AFC East.
@@t4d0W I never really thought that Mac could be a franchise quarterback but having a good rookie season, I would say he would be at least top 12 or 15 quarterback in this league. But Bill Belichick been the GM did not put the necessary pieces or the right coaching staff offensively to help him out.
it feels like all the diffrent parts of the offense are all slightly worse than they need to be which would be manageable on tis own and there is also no part of the offense to acutally bail them out. I am not convinced if you trade Purdy for Mac Jones the situation changes in big way for either organisation. and maybe Belichick needs to learn that a normal QB neeeds a bit more assets than the GOAT and he needs to build an elite defense with less capspace than he is used to. The bad Special teams also tell a really bad story about the overall quality of the roster.
Casual Jags fan here, and that pick at 12:35... that was pure rookie Bortles execution. Awkward rollout, telegraphed duck to a bad 1-on-1 matchup with the corner waiting to just grab some takeout and go. Now, under Gus Bradley, this was actually *schemed*, but yeah. Not exactly a comparison that gives you a lot of hope for things turning around for Mac.
As a Steelers fan, when you said the Patriots have one of the worst offenses, I was like: "Have you seen the Steelers yet?" Then you mention they will be the next video, so I wasn't disappointed 😂
Realistically that's probably in the team's best interest. They ruined whatever Mac Jones could have been, and need to restart the offense at all positions save TE and RB. Their QB is bad, the offensive line is a dumpster fire, they can't open holes in the run game and can't protect for even a second and a half in the pass game. The receiver group for New England might be the worst in the league. They are all guys who should be WR3 or less on a competent roster and can't get separation. The best thing for the Pats is probably what you said. They need to bottom out and hit on a high 1st round QB, either hit on a tackle in the draft or get one in free agency, and they desperately need speed and playmaking at the WR position. This will have to be a multiple year rebuild.
Seahawks: Hold my beer... Geno: I'ma throw 2 picks, go 0 for 7 in the red zone, and take an eternity to go through my reads while my makeshift offensive line snaps and cracks under pressure.
as a pats fan, the oline might be the worst case scenario. interior is supposed to be good yet they've regressed HARD, generating no gaps or push on runs and then being ass on pass blocking reps. theyre just god awful
I know I won’t be able to go to foxborough this season because I’m in college, but I’ve never wanted to go up there from TX more than I do right now & im a patriots fan
Thank you! Question. If mac backs up instead of stepping up in the pocket and the edge gets him, does that count as a pressure against the oline. My eyes tell me he backs up into the way, opens his hips flat to the line and try to use only arm strength. All the passes even in a winning game are slow and late so the recievers have to stop or slow allowing the corners to catch up. I rarely see him drive the ball so it gets to the reciever in step and leading them. I dont know if Parker or borne or hunter are slow or bad, I think the ball place and timing are so bad they can't run at full speed
I find the narrative around the Patriots and the Seahawks to be really interesting. On one hand, Belichick seems to be really struggling after losing Brady, implying it was Brady that was the real driving force. On the other hand, Wilson seems to be struggling without Carrol, implying it was Pete who was in the right. Just goes to show that sometimes its the coach, sometimes its the QB. And in the case of Jones and Belichick, sometimes its both.
I mean Brady was the offense for the Pats despite how 'low' the quality of talent on the offense got. 2019 was the lowest bar for him and I can see why Brady would want to leave to a more stacked roster. As for Wilson he's getting older, he's getting slower and he really pass at the middle of the field. Carroll knew his value but the Broncos thought he's worth 296 million for 7 years (along with a bunch of draft picks no less). To credit Caroll he had a great rebound with those picks to help replenish the talent drain but also had a veteran QB who makes sense with the stuff his modern play caller in Waldron (from McVay's group) could run.
I looked it up because I was curious. The Patriots are one of only 5 teams since the founding of the AFL to score 3 or fewer points combined and lose by at least 34 in back-to-back games-only the 1960 Bears, 1961 Raiders, 1978 Colts, and 1987 Falcons did that, and they all finished their seasons near the bottom of the league. I'm so glad it's finally over.
Ayo I kinda have a bit of a vision for what the pats should do. 1. I think it’s time they move in from belichick he’s just lost his magic with the team and also fire the O line coach too. they should also ship Mac Jones off to another team, he just hasn’t been looking good anymore these past few seasons. They should get a New Head Coach, New General Manager, and get a new QB in the offseason 2. If they end up getting a high draft pick or 1st overall, they should get Caleb Williams as their new QB. I know they won’t automatically be a one year turn around but they can work well with him overtime orthey can sign a QB in free agency in the offseason but idk if that will happen. 4. The pats need to use the remaining of their cap space to get some Star talent in their roster and also get an actual GM since they haven’t really done anything in free agency. To rebuild and give the offense some new weapons, they need to sign either some good WRs who will become free agents next year like Mike Evans or OBJ, etc. they should also try and focus on getting the O line back together and having everyone play healthy while having a new O line coach too. It might take a few years to get everything back together but that’s kinda what I think they should do and If belichick refuses to give up his GM duties then we just have to let him go.
When you’re assessing a young QB, the worst is realizing that he doesn’t make decisions quickly enough or that he doesn’t see the field well. Those things are generally unfixable. Jones seem to have both characteristics.
😂😂😂”I’m not going this year for obvious reasons “ an “I don’t suggest you to look at the offense plays” had me rolling bro ! I honestly think Mac confidence is gone, that’s why he playing so scary an shitty
This video has been my favorite part of the patriots season so far. Love the content and the delivery. Hope we see some improvement from the team at some point this year
In defense of Mac jones. As a bear fan who has watched bad olines ruin quarterbacks a lot, (not that we had many with hope) if u don’t trust ur oline they start running from empty pockets. He certainly seems broken at this point psychologically. Maybe he can be repaired if he can go somewhere he can trust his oline again.
I mean you're asking him to take a shot against incoming pressure to WRs that can't separate (for the most part) with an O-line that can't communicate. Its just a bad combination overall to try win that trust again. At that point its better to maybe dice roll for a more athletic QB who trusts they can win by themselves.
As a patriots fan. This is mostly on Belichick. He doesn’t re-sign Jacobi Meyers, who was Mac’s safety target. Doesn’t go and get a Tackle like Orlando Brown, and gives Mac 3 OC’s in 3 seasons.
You nailed it right on the head. This is 100% about trust. I don’t think Mac trusts his offensive line. I don’t think the offensive line trusts each other. I don’t think the WR room is confident enough in receiving a catchable ball. And ultimately the coaching staff and the players do not trust each other
From everything we've seen from Mac Jones, he's an asshole and a racist - and it's really hard to get a cohesive NFL team if the center piece of the offense is even only one of those things.
Excellent breakdown of problems, potential solutions and direction of the team! Actually I dont' find the video depressing at all for the reasons of clarity I mentioned earlier. Well that and the fact that I'm a life long Dolphins fan... Serious about the quality of your video though!

Bill bellicheck Basically punish the offense by getting rid of the 1 WR that got separation & was the QBs favorite weapon & who he could actually rely on in jakoby Myers Bill got rid of him cus he talked back On top of that Mac Jones has never been a strong QB his greatest strength was being smart which we all know that isn't the case right now

I like Arsenio Hall, too.
That's... a pretty good comparison, actually
In American football it was like this with Landry later tenure. He was a good coach during most of his time, but the game has passed him by.
Cool to see you here

As a Pats fan, I needed this deep dive to try and make sense of it all.
Did they reintroduce a Fullback into the offense?
I imagine Pats fans surprise when Matt Patricas offense was BETTER than Bill O’Brien’s
Like for real
Patricia’s offense is partially responsible for the lack of success in the O’Brien offense
Jesus, I didnt even think about that. That’s just depressing
I think each section was pretty accurate but, since this is my favorite team, I'll just add a few things:
Supporting cast - the offensive line has no communication because they're constantly shuffling guys due to injuries.
_"Brady left BECAUSE they had no talent left."_
This sounds good now, but it's 100% false. Brady was perfectly willing to stay for the right price. Look it up.
This. The Patriots were already in trouble during Brady's last years because they never restocked the wide receiver position and Scar couldn't coach the O line forever.
@@cisium1184 The Bucs was just too good to pass on. If you put any of the top 10 QB on that team easy superbowl appearance.
I think If Belichick gets fired then the patriots should get a new Head Coach like Jim Harbaugh. Then get an actual General Manager
The biggest takeaway I had from Mac’s rookie season was his composure in the pocket and under pressure. It feels like with the deterioration of the OL and lack of weapons, he’s become extremely gun-shy. Hopefully he isn’t full-on ruined like David Carr.

Are you sure he didn’t have more than 9years with Brady?
@@peteyprimo7173 that was a typo. It's fixed. It was supposed to read 9 seasons without him and 2 winning records without him. Pretty likely to be 2 out of 10 after this year.
Bill shouldn't be fired as coach. But he needs to either step down or be relieved of his GM role. I personally think that doing that could save them from folding altogether.
Will happen after the season.
I think If Belichick gets fired then the patriots should get a new Head Coach like Jim Harbaugh. Then get an actual General Manager
Bill literally let the 1 good WR that he's drafted in his whole entire career walk out the door over personal feelings and to spite his QB that says all u need to know about him needing to be the coach going further
Always a good day when Brett uploads.
Thanks for the tips Kollmann, they really helped
@@zoomcat5138 do you think Bill has the Ego to allow a fresh faced 40 year old to take his job? And cut into his $25 million a year?
As a Liberty fan, Demario Douglas is a dawg in my opinion. Like a discount Zay Flowers with how shifty he is, great steal for the Pats in the 6th round (I believe)!
that last clip of belicheck throwing challenge flag at ref lmao
Next Off-Season: Brett continues his series: Rebuilding the worst teams.
Patriots: Hello. How do you plan to improve us?
Brett: Just go away... Pleeeeease.
Fantastic episode. I knew the offense had issues but I didn’t think it was to the point where it’s borderline unfixable without massive changes throughout the entire unit.
Who is this Brett who uploads during daylight hours 🤔
17:20 Genuinely expected you to say "If you're here this late in the episode, you're probably a Jets or Bills fan."
I've been a Patriots fan since I was 5 years old. I never thought I'd see the day where we aren't even competitive in games. Hopefully we'll be able to bounce back in the future
That means you are among those "in Bill we believe" people.
You got what you deserve.
@@williamli6200wtf does that even mean, are patriots fans even allowed to be upset?
@@AcePilotX2 Are you one of those who believe that Belichick's defense won the first 3 SB?
*What was your expectation on Belichick's defense before 2007, given how much he invested on defense?*
Given so much invested on defense, it still needed offense to get first round bye (3 comeback wins in 2001 and 5 in 2003)? needed offense to deliver winning drives? needed offense to score 24 or more in back to back playoff games? WITH THAT CHEAP SQUAD.
@AcePilotX2 ignore him, that's the kind of comment from someone who had to watch the Pat's blast their team out of the water for 20 years. You will never be able to wash the bad taste out of his mouth.

Understand what I mean by "you get what you deserve"?
The problem with this analysis is that four weeks ago everyone, including you, was saying something different about them. They were going to be better, they were going to be dangerous. Why should we believe you now?
Because now we have actual games to analyze and break down. Over summer, based on past results from Mac, O’Brien, the OL, etc, we can only estimate what we *think* we are going to see.
But now after seeing them actually play, they are falling short of our hopeful expectations. And this video is explaining why that is.
As a dolphins fan, this is glorious…. I hope they keep these guys forever
as a pats fan im so happy u made this. so many pats fans cannot understand that its kinda everyone's fault. i feel like week in week out pats twitter has to blame only ONE person, mac or bill or the WRs or the OL and its so frustrating bc its legit all, mac lost his confidence he had, he lost his weapons. he lost his Oline, and most importantly he lost a OC who put him in the best spots with players put in spots to help him. i think the game has started to pass bill and while ill forever love him as the best coach of all time he's clearly a D coach and nothing more. hopefully the rebuild isn't TOOOO long
IMO the rebuild can be as long depending on how quick BB gets himself the franchise QB of the future.
Appreciate the two decades of Brady, doing it with no namers
the fact that the steelers have almost the same problems as us(I said almost) and they're somehow 6-4 will forever keep them the luckiest team in the NFL in my eyes
I'm so ready for this after watching them every week
Huh I wonder if that 12 fella made this all work
The Pats took N'Keal Harry over Deebo, AJ Brown, and DK Metcalf. Yikes!
Honestly, I feel sorry for Mac Jones. Yes he has played bad but at the same time this is all on Bill Belichick for not putting the necessary pieces around a Young quarterback who's on a rookie contract.
Rookie Mac was so promising. The Pats have failed him ever since.
I had faith in Mac for 2 seasons, I lost all hope after just a few games this year. He is absolutely the worst quarterback when under pressure in the nfl and it’s not even close
@@Drew-it7or that may be true, but Bill Belichick didn't did him any favors either by not putting the necessary Talent around him. Other organizations have put offensive Talent around a Young quarterback on a rookie contract.
@@thecharmcityplayerbrandona8827 True that. Even if Bill didn't believe in Mac's ceiling by not being more aggressive to surround him with higher tier talent, he still failed him that way.
The Patriots are so bad right now it's gonna take more than one season to fix.
As a Steelers fan, when you said the Patriots have one of the worst offenses, I was like: "Have you seen the Steelers yet?" Then you mention they will be the next video, so I wasn't disappointed 😂
if anything just look at his footwork. poor kid looks like he's the backup in high school and just got thrown in the game down 7
As a pats fan it’s been a great run man but we need to tank and grab Caleb out the draft
Couldn't agree more
Thank you so much for the reverse Kollmann curse hugeee win verse the bills 1 week later
As a pats fan, I think every single offensive starter needs to be replaced
You'll still be left with O'Brien, so unless you have a Brady lined up, expect more of the same.
Seahawks: Hold my beer...
Geno: I'ma throw 2 picks, go 0 for 7 in the red zone, and take an eternity to go through my reads while my makeshift offensive line snaps and cracks under pressure.
Let us all give thanks to Brett in advance for the upcoming 40 burger the Pats are gonna drop on the raiders this weekend
Well now I KNOW my Raiders bout to get crushed. Pats bout to go for 550 yards.
That would be historically accurate
This video makes me so happy. Only twenty more years of this will really make it complete. Keep up the good work, Pats!
you gotta move on and let it go. those 6 super bowls aren’t going away😂
as a pats fan, the oline might be the worst case scenario. interior is supposed to be good yet they've regressed HARD, generating no gaps or push on runs and then being ass on pass blocking reps. theyre just god awful
I think that Mac Jones is gun-shy now
I was at the game in Dallas as well
I tried to watch a patriots game. I got half way through the first quarter.
Holy crap lol
Ayo I kinda have a bit of a vision for what the pats should do.
1. I think it’s time they move in from belichick he’s just lost his magic with the team and also fire the O line coach too. they should also ship Mac Jones off to another team, he just hasn’t been looking good anymore these past few seasons. They should get a New Head Coach, New General Manager, and get a new QB in the offseason
Is "jover" some inside joke, or am I just getting old? This is the second youtube video I've şeen use this.
😂😂😂”I’m not going this year for obvious reasons “ an “I don’t suggest you to look at the offense plays” had me rolling bro ! I honestly think Mac confidence is gone, that’s why he playing so scary an shitty
Have you watched the Giants play this year?
Thanks for your in detail breakdowns love your videos and the podcast Channel have a great day
AS A PATS FAN WHO HAS SEEN BRADY IN FOXBOROUGH DONT GO ANYTIME SOON BUT THE ATMOSPHERE IN FOXBOROUGH IS AMAZING
Really good episode, but one thing is why is dome of the in-game footage looking blown out? Is that just source?
As a Pats fan looking for some ray of hope: Any thoughts on Zappe?
Man, I love your videos and I have for years since I met you on Reddit, but... why would you use Skip Bayless' content as any type of source? The world is better off without anybody pushing Skip's bullshit around.
I think Bill and Sean are both competing for Caleb Williams tbh
I saw there was a video and had to quickly check my calendar to make sure it wasn't the end of the month.
Love these videos!
Bill bellicheck Basically punish the offense by getting rid of the 1 WR that got separation & was the QBs favorite weapon & who he could actually rely on in jakoby Myers
Bill got rid of him cus he talked back On top of that Mac Jones has never been a strong QB his greatest strength was being smart which we all know that isn't the case right now
