  • In this short video, I'll explain some of the rail proposals that London will possibly construct based on the London 2050 Infrastructure Report which identifies projects to go ahead between 2015 and 2050.
    Note that this is an extensive document and these rail schemes may or may not happen, especially since may of these aren't funded as of yet, but it will be interesting to see if any of these will ever happen by 2050.
    If you like this video, give us a like and share!
    See you for the next one!

    South London desperately needs more tube stations. I'd like to see an extension of the Victoria Line southbound from Brixton up to Crystal Palace.
    I've never understood why the line suddenly stops at Brixton. Totally ridiculous and unfair, and then the mayor is telling everyone to use public transport more. Why would you in this situation?
    And yes the Bakerloo line needs to be extended from Elephant and Castle to Lewisham.

    One thing this video points out is the lack of infrastructure still planned for SE London. Major infrastructure is needed to support housing growth in North Greenwich, Lewisham, Bromley and Croydon. National Rail is already creaking at the seams and needs support from TfL services.
    At one stage it was discussed the DLR could extend to Forest Hill which has gone no where, additionally the tram could extend to Crystal Palace which has not gone ahead.
    I do believe Lewisham, Greenwich and Bromley councils need to express more interest in transport schemes as trams/DLR/Overground services could make a vast impact to their residents.
    I’m not ignoring the proposal to extend the Bakerloo Line but this is a drop in the Ocean vs what is needed and in comparison to the rest of London.

      This is spot on, I live in camberwell and to get a tube during rush hour I either need to sit on a crammed bus to either kennington or elephant or get a train from denmark hill to victoria or blackfriars in which I'm then paying even more because I'm getting a train into a zone 1 station first
      The lack of support in south east london is abysmal, just nearby you've got the gentrification and redevelopment of peckham and peckham rye is not big enough or well served enough to support it, new builds popping up all over the place in dulwich, east dulwich/north again are not good enough

      We're still paying in South London, seventy years after they were withdrawn and scrapped, for having the most efficient tramway network in the capital, which took business from the railways, and dissuaded the developers of Underground lines from extending into South London. Even when Crossrail/Elizabeth Line is finally opened, it won't be able to cope with demand.

      @frederick richardson the question is: do you need to know that you're on the overground? The average day traveller doesn't care which mode of transport they use to get there. They just need to know which line on the tube map they need to get and which station they need to get out. Of course, the tube, the overground and everything else by TfL are different networks, but that isn't important to know for a traveller. The lack of connection currently to TfL rail in the West, to the H&C near Kensington the Central on the Richmond Branch, and to the Met on the North London Lines. Then the Liverpool Street lines don't connect with any of the other Overground lines in the East without OSIs. To be fair I don't really get why they've been grouped into the Overground brand at all, they seem a really odd fit to me as not in any way orbital.

    Great stuff. Thanks. Extending the Northern Line beyond Battersea Power Station to Clapham Junction jumped out at me as a really good thing to do. TFL have stated that the extension of the northern line from Battersea Power Station to Clapham Junction will only happen when (if) Crossrail 2 is built. I assume this is to prevent massive overcrowding on the northern line as people change from National Rail Services at Clapham Junction onto the northern line to get into central London. When (if) Crossrail 2 is built then most people will chose to take that for cross London journeys from Clapham Junciton and therefore the demand on the northern line is less and the extension seems more sensible.

    • @Zestrayswede
      @Zestrayswede 2 роки тому +3

      Well... there are ferries that go up and down the Thames, or river buses as they're called. Ferries are of course nowhere near as prevalent in London as they used to be as they're slower than the tube which already connects to the destinations that a ferry could connect to, the Thames is a river after all and it's quite a narrow one as well. The Thames is around 200m wide whereas the Hudson is 1km wide. Stockholm has quite a few ferries were it make sense, being an archipelago there's quite a few routes that would not make sense with any other mode.
      Looking at the advertising for the Thames river bus i get the sense it's supposed to be something of a miniature cruise, something relaxing. Whereas the Stockholm commuter ferries are more about getting from A to B

    • @yay-cat
      @yay-cat 2 роки тому +1

      Well the energy required to power a boat is substantial and increases exponentially with speed whereas with trains the majority of energy is spend accelerating because the steel wheels on tracks have low rolling resistance. So the slow cruise-like speed of the river boats is probably an economic choice. Also the Thameslink boats are a nice mode for tourists wanting to see the city and locals often seem to prefer the bus to the tube

    I want to talk about Crossrail 2 (I'll refer to it as XR2)
    The southern section of XR2 would not require any new track, since it would run alongside SWR trains. At Wimbledon, things start to become a problem. This map shows the line going directly to Balham, requiring new tracks to be built. However, there is a workaround to this, and it involves Clapham Junction. Instead of having the line run directly to Balham, we can run it to Clapham Jn and then use Southern tracks to go down to Balham. From there, a new line would be constructed linking the Southern track to SouthEastern tracks. From there, the line would follow SouthEastern's tracks into Victoria. A new tunnel would be constructed to Euston-King's Cross-St. Pancras (EKCSP from now on), since XR2 cannot use LU (London Underground) tracks. From EKCSP, a new section of track would be constructed to Angel, then onto GreaterAnglia (GA) tracks. XR2 would follow GA tracks to just short of Hackney Downs, where the branch to New Southgate would begin. From there, a new bit of track would be constructed to connect Dalston (a new station would need to be built?). From there, the line would merge back onto Overground tracks, running up to Seven Sisters. A new piece of track would be constructed linking Seven Sisters to Great Northern lines, heading via Turnpike Lane. Alternatively, you could cheat and build a curve of track connecting two of the Overground Lines, then adding a crescent to Turnpike Lane, then add another curve of track at Harringay station(s). This branch would then continue to follow Great Northern tracks to New Southgate.
    Back on the branch of the line at Dalston, a new section of track would be constructed linking the Overground line (the diversion to Dalston would join the Overground Line) back onto the GreaterAnglia tracks, where the XR2 would run up to Tottenham Hale, Northumberland Park, Meridian Water, all the way to Broxbourne, with opportunities to run up to Hertford East or even to Stansted Airport.
    Now, back down before Dalston, where the line would be on GA tracks, another branch would start, this time following GA tracks to Hackney Downs. From there, the line could merge onto Overground tracks, running to Stratford, then following more GA tracks up to Chelmsford and Southend as a bonus section. This could also link the two Crossrails together better.
    Now, rolling stock. There are some existing types of stock that could be compatible with such a mess of electrification. I think all of the tracks which XR2 would run on have been electrified with a mixture of 25 kV overhead and 750V third rail. There are many rolling stock types that are compatible with both, such as the Desiro City trains used by ThamesLink and Great Northern, the 710 used on the London Overground, as well as the 378, 387, 377, some 313s, 395, as well as a few locomotives. All of these are compatible with the tracks which could be used. The only problem occurs after Angel, where the train is exposed to a variety of electrification methods, requiring frequent switching between the two.
    And that's Crossrail 2 for you, as cheap as possible and constructing low amounts of track.
    (edits were to "save" progress)

    • @saturnsandjupiters358
      @saturnsandjupiters358 2 роки тому

      But can’t you just build the new bits underground? Like with XR1? I think the idea was that the existing bits (the beginning and end basically) would just reuse existing tracks above ground, but the centre section would go underground. Plus, digging tunnels isn’t actually too expensive - it’s the new stations which cost the most money, and XR2 hasn’t got any of them. So the plan is already in a pretty good shape (at least from my point of view)

    • @williamhuang8309
      @williamhuang8309 2 роки тому

      @@saturnsandjupiters358 Well... you can't reuse the underground platforms. For the through-run sections on the National Rail network, you don't need more stations, but underground through the core section, you'll have a similar situation as XR1 where you need to construct new platforms which can be quite expensive.

    What a fantastic presentation! Two things come to mind. Firstly, you said at the beginning that the population of London would increase dramatically in the next 30 years or so but will there be enough places for people to live there by then? I suspect that more urban sprawl or alternatively more densely packed housing might put at least some people off living in London and its immediate environs. Secondly, with the Covid-19 pandemic having acted as a catalyst to increase working from home, will there be the demand for public transport in 2050?

    • @TheoHiggins
      @TheoHiggins 2 роки тому

      There will always be demand for public transport, especially in a city as large as London and with the slow move away from cars for environmental reasons. London is unlikely to sprawl outwards due to the green belt around it which restricts development somewhat. Of course, the green belt could be slowly eroded (as I believe is already happening) but it'd be fairly suicidal for a gov't to eat into it significantly due to the aforementioned environmental concerns. Having grown up in London over the past 20 years I can say that new housing is getting significantly denser. I live in a brick semi-detached house which I couldn't possibly imagine being built nowadays. You see a lot of new modern flats being built, which can be seen especially around the Olympic park in Stratford. Not sure who can afford to live there though. I live near a crossrail station and I imagine that in 30 years the area will be completely gentrified and unrecognisable - even if working from home really takes off and becomes the default way to work, easy access to Central London is still a valuable and desirable thing and further public transport extensions bringing this to more people can only be a good thing.

    Fantastic video and seriously well done. Sadly, I'm pessimistic about many of these improvements actually coming to fruition unless people start returning to work anytime soon as there won't be a London economy let alone any need for further lines to transport the dwindling number of commuters.
