I started tying at the start of the pandemic. A random tying tutorial came up on UA-cam and I thought "I can do that".
Strange thought because I didn't own a fly rod.
Started with sewing thread, yarn, craft store stuff, fur from pets, and feathers I found found floating in duck ponds. Found I really enjoyed tying and started getting legit tools and materials. And actually got a fly rod. Not a long list, but so far I've caught blue gill and large and smaller mouth bass.

Tied my first fly when I was 10 years old - back in 1962. Fly tying became not only a source of joy and creativity, but also a source of "meditation" and stress relief through all the ups and downs of life over the many decades since. I won't say it's "cheaper" than therapy - but it's a hell of lot more fun. At age 70 I just spent the last three months taking a deep dive into tying articulated streamers for the first time. Do I really "need them" to be successful in my fly fishing? No, I don't think so, but geeze they've been a lot of fun to experiment with and tie. In the end, I tie because it brings me joy and it relaxes me. What more could you ask for?

My story exactly. Every winter I tie hundreds of flies I will probably never use but I just can’t stop, I ‘m addicted, but a good addiction.

There is nothing more satisfying than catching on a fly you tied yourself. It's that simple, IMHO.

I have a high stress job and have grown tired of watching TV. For the past 4 years, I tie 4-5 nights a week and it is the best thing I have done. Before that I still tied, but it was very specific to what I was going to use in the winter while I wasn't fishing bass tournaments. I also pour my own jigs, make my own crankbaits and topwaters, and do quite a bit of airbrushing of lures. I am always tinkering with something. I 100% agree that catching fish on something you made is a great feeling. I only fish with my flies and I am kind of anal about it. I also love giving my flies to people I meet on the river, especially if they send me a pic of fish they caught with it.

My dad taught me when I was a kid back in the 90s. I was obsessed and then joined the military in 2001 and forgot about it. Picked it up again a few years ago because I needed an indoor hobby. Was like I had never quit. Plus youtube is a huge help now.

Curtis and Cheech-thank you so much for all you do for the sport and all the teaching. Good stuff as always guys. I have fly fished for 40 years. I am 59 now. I am not an expert by any means. Maybe get to fish 10 times a year due to my busy schedule as a physician and surgeon. Always wanted to tie flies and have all the equipment and lots of materials to do so. Just been waiting for the time to get into it. I keep saying when I retire I will do it. I am near that time in my career. A part of me still hesitates because even though I am an accomplished surgeon and have sewn more tissue and organs than many have tied flies, I remain apprehensive to tie flies. It looks like a bit of an overwhelming "rabbit hole" because of all the choices in hooks, beads, materials, etc. Secondly, unlike the both of you I am not an artist when it comes to drawing something on paper or molding clay. I am very good at molding tissue and putting human parts back together the way they belong but by no means am I an artist. I am more of a technician-repair guy than artist. Do you have any advice for me to get over my fears to start fly tying? Can somebody like me (not an artist) become an accomplished fly tyer? Can somebody my age get good at it? I would welcome your comments. Thank you.

I’m an old man. I’ve tied flies forever because I really enjoy it. It seems to be meditative and relaxing. Also, I love the flies I tie, they seem to catch a lot of fish. I’ve gotten into swinging for steelhead and have started to make stupid pretty flies, knowing full well that I’m not really doing that for the fish….nevertheless, they sure seem to do well. I was taught by Doug Stewart, for free, in his shop. He really believed in simple patterns, what I’m doing now probably doesn’t fit….but who cares.

I have been tying for 40 years and I still tie most days for a hour or so I would not say I was artistic but there can be no doubt that when the fish take your own flies its a great feeling and in my opinion it enhances the pleasure of catching any fish on a fly

I’ve been tying since the 60’s and it’s been a life long adventure! Thinking back we never had the source of materials like now a days, it’s come a long way ! Along with the old silk fly lines! I remember stopping on the roadside to cut off a squirrel tail from a road kill many times back then and dying furs ! Thank god for the advancement of new materials and companies like Whiting Farms !

Been tying for about 4 years, I would not consider myself artistic or creative, so the videos from FFF are extremely helpful to someone like me. My Dad began tying when he started fly fishing in the mountains of NC. My Dad has always been creative and can build whatever from the ground up. So in my early days of fly fishing (about 6yrs ago) I didn't think I could be a successful fly tyer, due to not being "wired" like my pops. I gave it a try and haven't looked back. I'm still a video watcher/recipe follower, but I have started to just sit down with no video help, grab some stuff, and make trout food. So if you watch this and aren't sure if it's for you....if I can do it, probably anybody can. 😉

Great video guys! I see fly tying as a hobby on its own and that it supports my fly fishing is a bonus! I got into fly tying in the 60's out of necessity - back then there were few flies available and they were very poorly tied. I've always been a DIY guy so tying my own flies was a given :) I tie for four reasons: for relaxation; for practicing techniques; for experimenting with materials, and to tie imitations of the local forage. After years of fly tying and fishing, I've come to the conclusion that (in spite of the millions of recognized fly patterns) there are a few real "basic designs" and most "new" patterns are just the same old thing tied with a different materials that don't change how the fly swims/fishes. I used to carry hundreds of patterns in my fly vest, now I have a "favorites" box with a limited selection of different types of flies. I've found that simple flies work just fine, I do carry some classic patterns, but most of my flies are generic patterns in the size and color of the local forage.

That’s a very informative video but true to the bones I’ve been tying for 30 yrs and the video explains the same reason I started tying my flies. And to save money (hahahaha), every fly tier knows that does not go far when you put a price on all the fly tying material we have on our bench!

There are actually very few dry fly or nymph "patterns". Variations are limitless, but many beginners are overwhelmed with all the rhetoric. Streamers have come into vogue and have infinite possibilities for variation, clever names and difficulty to cast. My recommendation to new fly tiers is learn the following and then be as creative as you want: Elk Hair Caddis, Adam's Irresistable, Stimulator, Wooly Bugger, Pheasant tail. I believe these will give you the basics for all others to come. We tie more for the fisher an than the fish. Ugly works. Size matters. Simple is as effective as complex. Craft stores are a great resource for same materials only less expensive. Nice video. Thank you

Your description of why we tie flies could not be any more accurate! Years a go I went to Alaska for rainbow and grayling fishing. Be fore going, I asked what works well there? The head guide said "skidding mice". I tied a few crappy looking mice from You Tube. When I got there the head guide looked at them and said " Nothing like we use up here" At the end of the trip he asked me if he could keep a few!! Love your work! Keep it up and tight lines.

I've watched every single video from FlyFishFood and I've bought from there online shop its absolutely brilliant. Plus I've had the pleasure of meeting cheech and curtis when i visited America for the first time last May . The shop is totally amazing plus they took the time to show me around the new studio upstairs which they said I was the first to see it lol and the warehouse next door the place is total heaven for flytyers.

I picked up a fly rod when I was 8, that would be 1963. Fly fishing may have well been Voodoo I was on my own. I started tying my flies about the same time- It was not very good. So thru the 1960s and into the 1970s was a very frustrating for me. If I caught two fish in a season it was a good season. Joining TU in the late 1970's I met others and they got my casting where it needed to be, and a Fly shop opened near my home, I stood some lessons. Then the 3m VHS instructional tapes came out so I bought a VHS player, and my skill level on the water and at the bench shot way up. I am by nature not an artistic fellow and I flunked Spanish in school not once but twice. I took jobs that would put me in good trout fishing nearby. I flew for a company in WS that had me based in the Driftless Area. I stayed with them for 6 years, Flying Beech 99's. It was a place you when to build multi-engine turbine time and then beat it to the airlines when you logged 500 to 800 hours of it about 9 months' worth of work. I took the job for the fish. I like flies that are simple and quick to tie. You are right about it, we are living in the golden age of fly fishing Fly Tying, and access to instruction. I am going into my 60th year in 2023. I don't think I am going to put the rod down anytime soon. The greatest moment for me was when I tied a # 14 Adams that was proportionally as perfect as you can get. I never fished that fly, it's in the Hook box I got the hook out of, the last one. That got to be 55 years ago now.

I'd like to add that there are a lot of places in the country that don't have good fly shops. Also the type of fishing in my general area requires different weights of flies that (until a few years ago) were not widely available from commercial patterns. Having materials on hand gives me the ability to tie flies for a last minute trip that I can't get locally and won't have time to get it shipped before the trip.

i tie my own salmon tubes and dressed hooks because i have in the past bought a lot of commercially tied flies over the years in scotland and alover the uk and many were crap or fell to bits, so once i learned to do it to a very good level i made sure none of my tubes unwind as between every component i put a drop of varnish and finish the head with superglue before a few coats of varnish! but more than anything its more satisfying catching a salmon on a fly i have tied myself, its very satisfying when you take it out the vise on friday night and it catches a salmon on saturday 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

What a huge joke that was. On me. But I do enjoy it. Creating, copying, making art. There are some flies I've seen that I'll never ever use for fishing, but I want to tie them anyway, just for my own satisfaction and for displaying. I see a shadowbox or large picture frame full of really beautiful patterns somewhere in my future. Lol

Why? Because we can tie a specific pattern vs the same old lame stuff forced upon you by fly shops. No matter what fly shop, the patterns are mind-numbingly similar yet don't really represent what you actually see out there. Not only THAT, but you can tweak one of those mind-numbing patterns as you see fit.
