How to tie the Honey Badger Sculpin. Top EURO jigged STREAMER

- The Honey Badger Sculpin is an original pattern of mine. This heavily weighted jigged streamer is super effective when it is slowly jigged near the bottom on a euro rig. The key to it is the pine squirrel zonker strip married with the UV polar chenille. Together the two give the perfect amount of movement and flash. In this fly tying tutorial, I give the step by step instructions for tying this pattern.

Ingredients:
Olive Honey Badger:
Hook: Hanak 400 size 8 (or any equivalent hook)
Bead: INVERTED 4mm black nickel tungsten
Thread: 8/0 Uni Olive dun (or any olive thread)
Tail/body/head: Olive MICRO pine squirrel zonker strip
Body: Hareline Medium UV polar chenille Olive-brown
Gills: red flashabou
Black Honey Badger:
Bead: INVERTED 4mm tungsten silver
Thread: black
Tail/body/head: Black MICRO pine squirrel zonker strip
Body: Hareline Medium polar chenille Black
Natural Honey Badger:
Bead: INVERTED 4mm tungsten copper
Thread: brown
Tail/body/head: Natural MICRO pine squirrel zonker strip

Following your videos, I tied up several color variations and have been using them lately for WNY tributary smallies using a Contact II 10’ 9” 2wt with a Pezon & Michel leader and Color Line indicator. What an effective system! Smallies, trout, carp and even suckers LOVE this fly! Every time I play your videos my wife says, “there’s Cory!” Can’t thank you enough for your videos. I am so glad I tied this pattern! Caught so many stocker bows today on the Olive version of this bug in Northwestern NJ. Riffles, slow pools didn’t matter they just crushed it. Just adding to the comments on this pattern.... this week in Central Oregon on the Crooked River,, the natural pine version resulted in my only fish of the session. We are experiencing unusually off color water due to extremely low levels in the reservoir that feeds the Crooked wild and scenic stretch this winter. Normally we would be fishing extremely low and clear flows on this river in the winter. After no luck in a normally productive stretch of water, with the usual midge patterns and nymphs on NZ wool indicators... switched to a Czech leader and the sculpin. Boom it was the ticket...I haven't fished streamers a lot on this water, but this pattern may change that. Thanks for sharing your work.

Nicely done. I'm pretty sure this would work on the Madison during the warmer months as well. I tie something similar, though not on a jig hook. I like your fly quite a lot, so I've just ordered the missing parts and will be tying a bunch. Thanks for posting.

After you did the fishing video I sat at the bench and tried to replicate it I was pretty close but I couldn’t find the right material that I wanted I did my best guessing game I was close but now I got the recipe! I never did get the fish it but it looks like a killer! Fly shops around here suck! But I didn’t know exactly what I was looking for online so now I do great job Cory

Appreciate it, RJF! I would still use this pattern. It is my fav. It will represent other little baitfish and when I have seen a lot of crayfish, the natural color does really well.
Nice tie Cory. Like an improved slumpbuster with the loop technique for the squirrel fur at the head. I tie something similar for my jig sculpin pattern. Do you ever worry about short striking with a tail that long? I know the movement is better but I always worry about the short striking with tails that long...prob doesn't matter since the fish is usually eating it "head first" in most cases.
Thanks, Greg. This is a pretty small streamer...2 - 2.5 inches long, so I don't worry about a short strike. They will suck the whole thing in their mouth just like a nymph. I will cut it down to 2 inches at times and you will still get tons of movement out of it. Hope 22 is a great year for you!
Great video, love your work! I had a quick question, when on the water what’s your camera setup? What are you using for audio on your GoPro? Any tips would be great. You audio quality sounds so good for a GoPro. Also, are you wearing a head or chest strap? Thanks so much and keep up the amazing content.
Thanks, Ryan. Really appreciate it! I use a GoPro Hero 9 and the built in mic. No extras. I make sure the wind reduction is on auto and raw audio is off. I use the chest mount. Hope this helps.
Cory, another great video. Thanks. Do you fish this fly exclusively on the bottom (bouncing/jigging it along)? Can you also fish it a few inches or a foot or so from the bottom or is that too uncharacteristic for the sculpin? Thanks!
Thank you, Scott! Most of the time I am jigging it along the bottom-but nothing is a hundred percent, so you can absolutely bring it up in the water column and strip it . Especially if you are in a fishy looking area and haven’t got any takes off the bottom. It’s always worth it to try and show them something different to trigger a bite.

@@scottrice1132 Scott, if you use a slotted bead with a traditional hook, you can make the hook invert like a jig hook by pushing the bead above the center line and build a thread dam to keep the weight above center. This will invert it like a jig. If you do it this way, tie it like I do. If you are using a cone head or a countersunk bead, then I would flip it around.
Is this inspired by Devin Olsen's backflop jig? Devin's fly has the 2.8 or 3.8 countersink tungsten beads in the body.

Great tie. I will spin some up for my box! Do you find you get “tail taster” strikes with the longer tail or are they generally eating the entire fly?
Appreciate it. No, you won’t get short strikes. This fly is 2.5 inches at most to the end of the hair (not hide). You can always cut it down to 2 inches. But the trout will suck the whole thing down easily. Let me know how you do with it. Good luck!

please I have a question. How much weight can a number 4 rod handle on a Euro system? Are you talking about a very heavy streamer, how much can it be? thank you so much
Miguel, a 4 weight can easily handle this 4mm bead (or even a 4.6mm). These are at the top of the heaviest weights I use. I often throw this on my 2 weight, so your 4 will be great. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.

There is, J M. Micro pine is much smaller than rabbit Zonker strips.

@@OldDominionTroutBum Cory, this post is dated so I hope you see my question... Have you tied this pattern using MICRO rabbit strips and if so, what are the downsides of using rabbit vs squirrel strips? MICRO Rabbit is much easier to find and come in so many colors variations.
@@jtahoe5672 The big difference is the Pine is still smaller than Rabbit. I haven't used them, but my buddy has and he has had great luck. They certainly are a great option if you can't find pine squirrel.
Hi been looking to find streamers for trout and walleye my question is can you troll it and can you tie it on a jig head
Absolutely Jimmy. You can tie it that way and I would imagine you could slow troll it. It has tons of movement-certainly worth a try.
That's a big heavy streamer. How do you cast it, from a water load or more like someone would cast a spinning rod, with the fly hanging four or five feet down from the rod tip and giving it a bit of a fling?
I still cast the same way, you just need to slow it down. Sometimes, depending on the circumstances, you will water load. But, you can definitely cast it the traditional way. It loads the rod super easy, which makes it really easy.

Awesome looking jig streamer, can't wait to tie some up and try them out. I have a question regarding the size (width) of the squirrel tail hide in the MICRO size. The package of Waspi pine squirrel tail I ordered in the Micro size only contained two strips of tail that appear wide enough to try and penetrate with the size 8 hook you recommend. The other strips of tail appear to narrow to get this size hook through and expect the tail not to be torn off after the first fish. Have you experienced similar concerns with the Micro size tail? Maybe I should order the next size wider tail? Since I haven't tied or fished this pattern yet your advice and experience is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time and consideration.
Thanks so much, David! I haven't had a problem with them getting torn off. I've caught 20 plus fish on one streamer before it showed signs of falling apart. I understand what you mean....some micro strips tend to be a little wider on the same strip so I look for the wider area to put my hook through. (save the other parts for the dubbing loop) I do think you will be ok, just makes sure you stick it through the middle. I would not get the next size larger as they won't match up with a size 8 hook. The key to this pattern is it's smaller size. Hope this helps and good luck with it!
