Thanks for the tutorial and taking us fishing. This is one of the flies I use for bluegills down in southern Maryland. They seem to like it as much as those little trout.

Nice one Matt. Haven’t tried tying a parachute Adam’s yet. The post looks a bit tedious but after your explanation of why they are so effective I’m going to have to give it a go. Thanks again and it’s nice to see you catching fish.
Very effective. I do like tying the wing with calftail & think it looks better. However, I confess to mostly using poly yarn nowadays, since I think it’s faster to use. One trick you might try after tying in the post at the base, I flip my vise to invert the hook, place swivel hackle pliers on the post material to lock the material in place & then wrap the post with thread. After prepping the post, I add the hackle collar using the same method that you use. That is a very pretty stream with some pretty trout.
Thanks Bob; that's a great idea. Swivel hackle pliers are one tool I don't yet have. And yes, the Gunpowder River is a beautiful place. Lots of different type water in the 17 miles of C&R. A couple miles of pure pocket water, several miles of pebbled bottom with riffles and chutes. And sections like this one with deeper, smooth water sprinkled throughout it all. The only down side is that it's close to both DC and Baltimore, easy access and gets pretty crowded on weekends in the spring and summer. (But as a tailwater, the temps stay consistently 50-60 degrees no matter the season or air temp.)

Absolutely David! I do have a couple of fast action 2-wt rods, but this 3-wt fiberglass is a ton of fun to fish. It makes the 9-inch fish more fun, and the occasional 12-incher feel like a monster. :-)
I fished with a buddies 3 weight glass rod a couple weeks ago it was a blast once I got the timing down. And I got a couple 12” monsters on it and I had a bow in that rod from cork to tip😁. I’ll be adding one to my collection for sure!
Hi Matt, the Adams is a must have dry in all sizes, I like a klinkhamer version as it brings fish up when nothing else is happening and you can add a small nymph (klink & dink). Snowshoe hare makes a lovely post and using a cree hackle means you don't need to use the brown and grizzly...but is it still an Adams ? Partridge done the parachute hooks with the post a few years ago but they didn't do very well and where soon discontinued. I was lucky enough to get some of the original Niche siliconised polypropylene and its the best material for posts, fly tying boutique sells it and is the only supplier I think. If you like the Adams have a look at the Grey Duster and the Rat Faced McDougal. Great tie and nice to see you fishing again 👍
Great comment Graham! I love this idea of tying some standard parachute dry flies on a klinkhammer hook. Now I've heard of the Rat Faced McDougal but the Grey Duster is a new one to me. I'm looking it up now. This thing looks great! It's certainly got the Adams colors but most I'm seeing don't have a tail. I am definitely going to put a half dozen of these in my box. I might tie some sulphur duns in this style as well. Thank you for the idea!

I’ve been using Elk hair caddis harassing the perch and small bass lately..had to change from my go to foam Llano bug, I know it works, figured I’d try a natural material fly. I’ll definitely try this parachute fly, it will work for sure, perch aren’t finicky eaters.😂 That is a beautiful place you’re fishing. Great video Matt! I've found that tying in your post, before the tail is much easier. And you can get a better body taper. I also hackle the post the same way as you, but when using 2 hackle, I strip the one side off each hackle.
Excellent tips! And yes, when I tie dry flies with upright wings I usually do them before the tail. I don't know why I didn't think to do that on this too. :-)

The boonie is back ;o) Parachutes and me never got along. I've tied a few and usually ended up with the leaning post of Pisa. I remember reading about a gallows to make life easier in tying them. When was the last time you've read or seen a video with a tyer using a gallows? Nice teaching video Matt. Great history too. Thanks Joe! I don't think I've ever seen a video of anyone tying with that parachute tool you're talking about. If that is indeed what a "gallows" is. But I think I know what you're talking about. I should probably research that. But I just haven't tied too many parachute patterns lately. I think I tied three dozen parachute Adams and a dozen purple hazes last spring, and I've still got over half of them in one of my boxes. But... I think I'm going to try some parachute sulphurs and BWOs this year. I could certainly use the practice. :-)
Just pointing out. In the background in the beginning of this video, you see a book behind him called forgotten flies…. This book is mega rare! If you can find it, your looking at paying hundreds if your luck and willing to have a rough used copy, is 1000+ if your not lucky and a mint first edition sells for thousands of dollars typically at auction.
Wow, you are right! I didn't pay that much for mine but I see it on Amazon (used) for $1,200 at the moment. It looks like you can get one on Ebay but it's still not cheap!
Great video Matt. Early this season, I tied some Hackle Stacker emergers and Last Chance style cripples. Have you tried those yet? I don't think I hooked a fish with them but if I remember, they did did get some immediate attention from the fussy wild browns on Spring Creek.

Nothin wrong with a 9” brown, man. I spend some days just catching 4-9” brookies in these tiny little mountain streams north of me and it’s every bit as exhilarating as landing a 3-5# bass. Small fish in small water…the essence of fly fishing for many people, myself included.
Hi Matt. I'm not sure where else to ask this question, but I suspect if anyone knows you will. I picked up an old TMC collection and in it was a box of size 14 TMC 205BL hooks. Its a very unusual looking hook and I have not been able to find what it would used for and why. A friend thought it might be used on a Klinkhammer but this hook has a very pronounced bend in the middle. I hope you are able to comment on it; I'd love to know something about it. By the way - the parachute adams and the elk hair caddis are my most used dry flies. I'd like to get better at tying them and this video is going to help.
Hi William! Nice find on this old hook. I think Tiemco has replaced it with the 206 but it's similar to it and they called it a caddis pupa hook. If you've ever heard of the Pig Sticker fly (basically a red blood worm looking thing), it was tied on this weird hook, but in one of the larger sizes. It's an interesting hook but I think they are such a specialized hook that they probably weren't very big sellers. And so they changed it a bit, with a less pronounced bend, and gave it a new model- the 206. That's my hypothesis anyway. :-)
Parachute hackle is pretty frustrating for me. My solution is to tie conventional hackle, then trim a "V" out of the bottom of the hackle collar. Wider V, lower riding fly.
No Al, Helen Shaw was American. Helen Todd was from Scotland. I couldn't find much about her, but here's one of the sources I dug up: simpsonflyfishing.com/the-parachute-adams/
Quite swell, Matt. Some commercial parachute flies used hackles and/or wings that are too short and hackles are too sparse. They might as well be fished as a top dropper on a nymph rig. They wouldn't float any longer than a marabou streamer.
Ha! That's a great analogy. I don't mind a short wing post but it's got to have enough hackle or you're right, and you're basically fishing it as an emerger.

Love the sweep the hackle stems back technique. I started doing it to keep eye area neater, found out it helps to balance the fly as well

I’ve been using Elk hair caddis harassing the perch and small bass lately..had to change from my go to foam Llano bug, I know it works, figured I’d try a natural material fly. I’ll definitely try this parachute fly, it will work for sure, perch aren’t finicky eaters.😂 That is a beautiful place you’re fishing. I've found that tying in your post, before the tail is much easier.
And you can get a better body taper.
I also hackle the post the same way as you, but when using 2 hackle, I strip the one side off each hackle.
Excellent tips! And yes, when I tie dry flies with upright wings I usually do them before the tail. I don't know why I didn't think to do that on this too. :-)

The boonie is back ;o) Parachutes and me never got along. I've tied a few and usually ended up with the leaning post of Pisa. I remember reading about a gallows to make life easier in tying them. When was the last time you've read or seen a video with a tyer using a gallows?

Thanks Joe! I don't think I've ever seen a video of anyone tying with that parachute tool you're talking about. If that is indeed what a "gallows" is. But I think I know what you're talking about. I should probably research that. But I just haven't tied too many parachute patterns lately. I think I tied three dozen parachute Adams and a dozen purple hazes last spring, and I've still got over half of them in one of my boxes. But... I think I'm going to try some parachute sulphurs and BWOs this year. I could certainly use the practice. :-)

Just pointing out. In the background in the beginning of this video, you see a book behind him called forgotten flies…. This book is mega rare! If you can find it, your looking at paying hundreds if your luck and willing to have a rough used copy, is 1000+ if your not lucky and a mint first edition sells for thousands of dollars typically at auction.
Wow, you are right! I didn't pay that much for mine but I see it on Amazon (used) for $1,200 at the moment. It looks like you can get one on Ebay but it's still not cheap!
Great video Matt. Early this season, I tied some Hackle Stacker emergers and Last Chance style cripples. Have you tried those yet? I don't think I hooked a fish with them but if I remember, they did did get some immediate attention from the fussy wild browns on Spring Creek.
I haven't tied either of these. I'm familiar with the "last chance" ones but the Hackle Stacker is a new one to me. I'm looking it up now and wow... okay, I think I've seen it before. But definitely haven't tied one yet. Thanks for the note; I'm adding this to my list. :-)
Nothin wrong with a 9” brown, man. I spend some days just catching 4-9” brookies in these tiny little mountain streams north of me and it’s every bit as exhilarating as landing a 3-5# bass. Small fish in small water…the essence of fly fishing for many people, myself included.
Hard to beat the good old Adam's. Have you tried a purple haze parachute I've been doing good on it.

Hi Matt. I'm not sure where else to ask this question, but I suspect if anyone knows you will. I picked up an old TMC collection and in it was a box of size 14 TMC 205BL hooks. Its a very unusual looking hook and I have not been able to find what it would used for and why. A friend thought it might be used on a Klinkhammer but this hook has a very pronounced bend in the middle. I hope you are able to comment on it; I'd love to know something about it. By the way - the parachute adams and the elk hair caddis are my most used dry flies. I'd like to get better at tying them and this video is going to help.
Hi William! Nice find on this old hook. I think Tiemco has replaced it with the 206 but it's similar to it and they called it a caddis pupa hook. If you've ever heard of the Pig Sticker fly (basically a red blood worm looking thing), it was tied on this weird hook, but in one of the larger sizes. It's an interesting hook but I think they are such a specialized hook that they probably weren't very big sellers. And so they changed it a bit, with a less pronounced bend, and gave it a new model- the 206. That's my hypothesis anyway. :-)
Parachute hackle is pretty frustrating for me. My solution is to tie conventional hackle, then trim a "V" out of the bottom of the hackle collar. Wider V, lower riding fly.

What rod do you use
Without watching this video, I believe I was using my Redington 3-wt Butterstick here. It's a sweet little fiberglass rod.

Quite swell, Matt. Some commercial parachute flies used hackles and/or wings that are too short and hackles are too sparse. They might as well be fished as a top dropper on a nymph rig. They wouldn't float any longer than a marabou streamer.
Ha! That's a great analogy. I don't mind a short wing post but it's got to have enough hackle or you're right, and you're basically fishing it as an emerger.
