This is a truly amazing song. Lyrics by Bob Daisley are beautifully sung by Ozzy, but the true brilliance is the composition and genius of Randy Rhoads. The background singers were the London Chamber Choir and strings by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Just brilliant! RIP Randy
There were 2 different guitars, recorded 3 times. Randy used steel and nylon stringed guitars that he recorded Left, Right, and Center. Also, Ozzy didn't write this. Bassist Bob Daisley wrote it about having a nervous breakdown. Ozzy hated it at first. He couldn't get the timing on the 7/8 right.
Hey Proud papa - thanks for the background info on this. The layering of guitars is a beautiful effect and I have to admire the and technical mastery and time it must have taken in 1981 to achieve that effect.
I love when someone with a music background hears Randy and Ozzy together. The planets were aligned and the gears of the universe were in sync when the first two albums were made. You picked up on the purposely disjointed time sig at the beginning. When you listen to this song with headphones you hear so much more going on. Randy as always plays as only he would and that solo came through a break in the sky from the heavens. I heard this and was mesmerized at 12 years old and was enamored with Randy's one of a kind playing. Fate dealt Randy a cruel hand but God damn he made a mark on guitar players, musicians, and metal lovers that has grown stronger with time.
Ken, dude, thank you for this reaction! This song has been my favorite Ozzy tune since it came out. I was both excited for you, and jealous of you, watching you experience it for the first time. In all my years of listening to this song, I never considered the "marching toward something". As soon as you said that, it clicked in place for me that it was exactly that which was happening. Your personality mixed with your musical knowledge, make your reactions so much fun and a learning experience. Thanks for doing these!
Randy, Daisley and Kerslake wrote the first two Ozzy albums. Diary was recorded in 81'. Randy was really big into multi tracking guitars, sometimes also detune some of the tracks against a track(s) in tune etc. Randy was pure musical genius.
Ozzy wrote most of the melodies. Don't disregard that. Without those melodies, you have instrumentals. Yes, Kerslake had melody ideas as well. This was all talked about by Daisley.
Blizzard was already written by the time Lee joined except for No Bone Movies. Randy wrote most of the main riffs on both albums. Daisly wrote the lyrics and together with Randy completed the song structures. Over 40 years and people still mix everything up.
Excellent lyrics by Bob Daisley regarding His problems with mental illness. Another Gem of music by Randy Rhoads. He wrote so many compositions in a short time before His tragic accident (airplane crash) in 1982. What could have been.
One of my favorite songs, and always a joy to watch someone react to hearing it for the first time. The drums in the bridge, during the "descent into madness," to me are reminiscent of the beginning of Chopin's "Marche Funèbre", almost a funerary march as the narrator is being overtaken by the cacophony of the voices, and the noises, that strain what little grip on reality he has left until he is torn apart mentally by the madness.
Have loved listening to this song since 1982.... great assessment of a truly great and cleverly written track. Ozzy and Randy really produced a gem with this one
I was a teenager when this came out and at that time the thought of a classically trained musician appreciating and reviewing a "metal" song was unheard of. It brings me joy to watch this. Yeah, 80's metal had plenty of "I'm getting laid tonight" songs, but there were lots of songs in there with artistry and musicianship. Thanks for posting this!
This song was Randy's magnum opus. Like Beethoven's 9th Symphony his greatest work was the last song he composed. Absolutely brilliant merger of metal and classical.
I love that you react to rock and metal bands too! The insight you provide is always super interesting (not a singer and just a lover of bangin' music here 😉).
People had no idea what this was all about when this came out. Like much of the metal world, it was passed off as noise and chaos. Ozzy fans understood the musical genius of Ozzy's first two albums.
Ken! Love your reactions to Metal! Please review Candlemass next, with Messiah Marcolin. He was trained operatic and sounds like nothing you've never heard! Please play Samaritan! You will be Amazed! Thank you
Great reaction and song choice, Ken! I'm afraid I didn't appreciate Ozzy as much as he deserves back in my younger days. Crazy Train is a classic, of course, but was more the songwriting and the guitar for me. The song that made me look at Ozzy in a new light was "No More Tears." His performance on that recording is really essential to the song and is hauntingly beautiful. It'd be a great follow-up, Ken. Here's a link to the music video: ua-cam.com/video/CprfjfN5PRs/v-deo.html
If you're into theatrical sounding rock productions, Alice Cooper Goes To Hell and Kiss' Unmasked might also treat you to a full listen good time. The albums each floweth beautifully track to track often unpredictable by virgin ears. Good albums experienced in full is all the candy you'll need.
You should check out Diary of a Lovesong. ua-cam.com/video/vcO6SaER9Wk/v-deo.html It's Maynard's (Tool) band 'A Perfect Circle' playing a mashup of this song and The Cure's 'Lovesong' live.
I’m new and I subscribed!! Can you please react to “Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy” cover by Penatonix. My favorite in this group is Avi Kaplan. I love his base voice. Geoff Castellucci is another good base 😍😁
Do you realize this was reality in the 1960s up to the 1980s.mental institutions and that is what he is singing about it was not just for a hit it was about reality listen to Black Sabbath in the 1970s
OK Ken, I'm really getting into your video's. I happened on your reaction to "Disturbed, Sound of Silence" the other day and LOVED what you had to say about it. His voice is amazing. Since you've stated on that reaction video that you'd be more open to listening to many different things out there, how about doing "Miley Cyrus and Metallica, Nothing Else Matters"..... It is so good.....really! I can't wait to see your reaction to this. I've included a link for it here: ua-cam.com/video/hBmSS8fDmek/v-deo.html
Thank you, Ken; for such an educated view :) Been your subscriber since you reacted to Disturbed's "Sound of silence". Here's one suggestion, so once you find some time - please do listen to it; I think you're gonna like it. It is a cover of Metallica's "Nothing else matters" done by VoicePlay ua-cam.com/video/f31q5KdfLnM/v-deo.html Thank you for your insightful reviews and have a nice day :)
Ozzy is not the best singer out there, and that's not throwing shade on him. His voice is very distinctive, and not many sound like him. I have often compared him to Gordon Lightfoot, as they both have a way of "singing through their noses", and its not a bad thing! It's what makes them unique👍
Not to discredit ozzy but he diddnt have much to do with the 1st 2 solo albums.. It wasn't even supposed to be ozzy solo. It was the blizzard of ozz band until the albums were released and to the bands surprise they were suddenly just hired hands. And I won't mention her name because it's known who.. But Bob and Lee were fired forgot about and cut out of royalties for there contributions.. This was the genius of Randy's unmatchable composing skills, impeccably knowledgeable guitar playing and Bob Daisleys amazing lyric writing.. It was a struggle to get Oz to even do the vocals because he was messed up most of the time.. He was in a pretty bad spot in that phase of his life with substance abuse after sabbath This song in peticular he thought was stupid couldn't figure it out and diddnt want to do it. They had to sit down and work through the timing and help him figure it out. This is a masterpiece and a testiony of the genius of Randy Rhoads. This was just the start imagine what could have been..and he was only 23 years old when these albums were produced. Randys brother Kelle(Doug) said of Randy " once every hundred years or so a master comes along that had this kind of talent like Mozart and Bach and that was my Brother"..
Ozzy would sing a melody over the instrumentations and Bob would record it and write lyrics. This was done for the majority of the material. Also, without Ozzy's singing, these songs would not be what they were. So yes, Ozzy had a lot to do with the first two solo albums.
RIP Randy
Absolutely brilliant! Composition is everything and you don't get any better than this song especially since it's hard rock.
When I listen to Randy Rhoads so do my neighbors
Best song ever written. As a drummer myself I love Lee Kerslake’s performance here.
❤ GREAT COMMENT 👍
Diary was released in 1981. Randy was tragically killed in 1982 at age 25. What an immeasurable loss to music. Thanks for doing this video. 👍
I was 14 and just picking up the guitar. As you said, the loss of Randy was immeasurable but 40+ years later his influence can be heard!
For my money this is the best song Ozzy was ever involved with any band any era. Just a masterpiece
No more tears edges it out for me, but its top 3 for sure.
I agree with you. This and Mr Crowley are my favorites.

@@KenLavigne listen to SATO off the same album in my honest opinion it's Randy's best work 💯🔥🤘
Bob Daisley was brilliant in Rainbow as well, fantastic lyricist, bassist and vocalist - very much underappreciated.
Wow great insight! Love the song and never knew this, Thank you Papa.
@@edwardmunoz7853 Little Dolls too
A true masterpiece!

This song is Ozzies and Randy's masterpiece. Thanks for Bob Daisley writing these great lyrics
you need ear Revelation(Mother Earth) by Ozzy...great piano and guitars works!!

Another excellent analysis! This song doesn't get the recognition it deserves, being overshadowed by so much of Ozzy's other works.
Randy, Daisley and Kerslake wrote the first two Ozzy albums. Diary was recorded in 81'. Randy was really big into multi tracking guitars, sometimes also detune some of the tracks against a track(s) in tune etc. Randy was pure musical genius.
They ended up doing everyone wrong especially Lee and Bob
@@edwardmunoz7853 they (Sharon) just didn't do Randy so much wrong simply cause he died before
Randy was amazing in getting the double or triple tracked guitars to sit perfect. So difficult to get right.
Ozzy wrote most of the melodies. Don't disregard that. Without those melodies, you have instrumentals. Yes, Kerslake had melody ideas as well. This was all talked about by Daisley.

Should be a million hits, 32 chords in this. St. Randy Rhoads... thanks Ken!
Is it, 32 different guitar chords? 😮
None better than Randy to this day!!
Buy far my friend.
Thanks from an 80's metal head for sharing the greatness of Ozzie to the youth of today.
Randy was the GOAT!

Great reaction video❣ And you hit the point - as always 👍
my personal favourite is "Revelation:mother earth". Much over looked but the real start of neoclassical metal for me
By far my favorite Ozzy song. It really appeals to the prog rock lover in me.

Ozzy is my favorite, what a voice and I love the drama he can bring to a song an a video also. Randy, gone to soon, so young, RIP.
I love this composition! Randy is unique. Ozzy was in his zone for sure.
Perfect reaction!
I live there everyday... I'm glad you're balanced ☺️
That's a classic you said everything he tells a good story he's one of a kind no one sounds like him randy a master shredder keep rocking

Perfectly put.

Ozzy Rules! Authentic and one of a kind
Outta time... Madman! Brilliant!!!
Great choice and awsome reaction! I can'r imagine someone more suitable then Ozzy and his band to give madness a musical sound.
One of the greatest songs ever recorded.
I hear elements of The Doors "Spanish Caravan" and Journey "Winds of March" in this song.
I really really really like your comparison of his music to the snake on Jungle Book..."Trusssssst in meeeee". In my opinion, perfect
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was the album where Ozzy really began to adopt his overlayed voice pattern. It hasn't changed much since then.
This is Randy's Masterpiece ! And Bob Daisley who wrote the lyrics .
this seems more like a narration conversation more than a reaction
St. Randy Rhoads also dubbed over some of his playing to get the depth and fullness of the tone. It was on the money my friends. Rock on 🤘
People had no idea what this was all about when this came out. Like much of the metal world, it was passed off as noise and chaos. Ozzy fans understood the musical genius of Ozzy's first two albums.
Best Ozzy song of all time.
The choir part always gave me the same feeling as the music from Omen and the Exorcist .
Randy could make you feel feelings from the music .
Best album start to finish, no bad songs. Hard to find.
Favorite Ozzy song!

RIP RANDY!
You need to check out the Oxxy tribute band called Ozz and see what you think about those guys. They are absolutely amazing
React to Savatage!
You are listening to at least 2 guitars, Randy double and occasionally triple tracked his guitars, he was good enough to be able to do it flawlessly.
Nobody is Ozzy, but Ozzy, and nobody does Ozzy better.
Take the outro to the intro. Surefire winner

That military march is a marker for confrontation
That wail by Ozzy. No body does it better, makes me feel sad for the rest.
Nice....Carly Simon@@dizastro5437
I count it as 7 going into 6 for the chorus...not 9/8...just quietly :)
you state the guitar almost sounds if there were two guitars.
could it be a 12 string/ double stringed guitar?
That same progression of notes is in the exorcist
DIO Mistreated 1977 live Munich has to be that performance
Do you realize that in the beginning of the song it’s not a guitar but a mandoilin
