in a previous electrical / electronics career, and occasionally pulling apart an old switch just for fun, I guess it could be something to do with the springs / geometry inside the switch. i.e. it naturally wants to switch off. I detect a recall happening if a lot of people have the same issue, a bike engine cutting out could be quite dangerous in certain situations.

It's great to see someone review this bike as a "bike". Not an A2 compliant bike, a learner bike or a beginner bike, but has all motorcycles should be reviewed... for what they are. More reviewers need to wake up and realise that not everyone wants a 200+ hp litre bike and that their reviews need to reflect the competency of the bike, not those that choose to ride them.

Thumbs up. I'm 66 and have been riding motorcycles since 1978. I have not been riding for a few years but in May I bought a used motorcycle. All reviewers on UA-cam called it a beginner bike. I just returned from a 9 day 2134 km (1326 miles) camping trip to Harz. My conclusion is that only a beginner will classify motorcycles like this as beginner bikes. 29 km/l (82 MPG UK) is touring I can afford. I only used motorways the last two days.

@@fuglbird I'm guilty of having passed judgement myself, back when I was in my teens and early twenties when I was an expert on everything.
In hindsight, I remember the "old blokes" on their 500's and 650's saying "it's more than enough bike for me, it goes well".
Then one of my mentors, a guy that had owned everything over his long life ranging from Vincents to SS Ducatis, K series BMW's and just about everything else. And he rode them 5 days a week.
He bought a Honda VTR 250 in his latter years.
He was besotted with the thing. "It's light, handles like it's on rails, it's a dream to ride around town, it has good suspension, uses no fuel, it's easy on tyres and the registration is cheap. It could be faster, but it's fast enough... you can't have everything". He owned that bike for years, up until the day he died.

I have had my Speed 400 since the end of May and done 700 miles so it's just had the first service. No issue with the kill switch but the engine light coming on is an issue with the immobiliser that is on all of them and Triumph is sorting it on the first service with some computer magic. It vibrated at first but as I put some miles on it they have diminished a lot, I haven't noticed any problematic mirror blurring. The only thing I have noticed is that after riding for a while and the bike has got hot, if you turn the bike off and go to restart it straightaway it's a little reluctant to start but starts on the second press of the starter.
I use it for commuting and rides into the Peak District and up to the Yorkshire Dales so very rarely go on motorways but do some dual carriageways where I can do higher speeds. Overall very pleased, it's comfortable, incredibly flickable, powerful enough and seems to have bags of torque, I rarely have to change down for more power to climb a hill, just twist the throttle and it pulls like a train.

You nailed it. Just a really fun bike to ride. Reminds me of the good old 60's Triumpsh. Light weight, great handling, loaded with character. Been out of riding for many years, so I had no idea what modern bikes were like. When I checked out this machine at the dealer and looked at the bigger Triumphs , I was surprised at how much bigger (and heavier) these motorcycles had gotten. The light weight of the 400 played a major role in my purchase decision. So far, haven't experienced the kill switch issue. Fingers crossed.

Did 40,000 miles on it, touring all over Europe with the odd track day inc. chopped it in for a Ducati , and bought a speed 400 as a second bike to use while in our gaff in Italy. Superb little bike, great comfort and easily worrying litre sport bikes on the twisties….a right laugh.

Great review, I bought a black one 4 weeks ago, I downsized and I'm absolutely loving it. Haven't had a problem with the kill switch but worth knowing about. My only gripe with the bike is the cheap quality switch gear, I suppose they had to save money somewhere. The Gold forks superbly match the black tank, the whole retro look with the aluminum side panels and badges is brilliant well done Triumph. Easily manoverable at 170kg, 80mpg, upright seat position, easily flat foot it at 5'8" flatish torque curve and the 40hp is ample for what i need and at 5k
One concern I have is when the warranty expires as I service my bikes, anyone know how to reset the service light, cannot gind anything in the Owners Manual or will I have to cover up a flashing wrench.

Kill switch is a non-starter for me -no pun intended…seriously a deal breaker. I would never accept a bike randomly shutting off mid ride (imagine mid corner on a nice aggressive canyon romp), but especially concerning for any beginner rider this bike is marketed for. Easily could put them into a life altering situation. We’ve just been shopping bikes for my son who is a newer rider. This was on the list. Not anymore. Shame on Triumph for releasing a bike with this issue. Thanks for the video and bringing up this issue which I’ve not heard anyone else mention. Anyone having the kill switch issue should take the bike back to the dealer to be looked at ASAP, and in the meantime either don’t ride it or tape that switch permanently into the on position, if it killed the engine during an overtake it could be dangerous, a small square of electrical tape would do, and if for any reason you needed to use the kill switch firm thumb pressure would lift the tape.

Intersesting & helpful reflections TMF. It's definitely a nice bike & guess time will tell with the kill switch issue which is a very odd one. Never heard of that before. Faulty kill switch yes but turning itself off, bizarre. Lots of other reviews out there & doesn't seem to have cropped up brfore as far as I'm aware. Hopefully a peculiar one-off although, not uncommon for new models of all manufacturers in year one to have issues & need recalls etc. Often a good idea to give a brand new model a year before purchasing for just this reason.

@@TheMissendenFlyer Just Googled it so pinch of salt, but there's possibly an issue caused by a recent software update that has led to problems with the immobilizer but that doesn't mention the switch flicking itself off. There is however talk of other Killswitch issues, mainly for those people who regularly use it to stop the bike. Something I never do as I have always been told it's bad for the bike. Supposedly it can burn out the coils & in more modern bikes it plays havoc with the software. It's been likened to a hard reset & pulling the plug out of your computer when it's mid boot-up or shut down. The Speed 400 manual itself also says that the killswitch should only be used to stop the bike in emergencies. Time will tell I guess.

Kill switches on bikes easily get knocked easy to change if the spring does not Keep it open knocked mine on different bikes before I realised . Used it in traffic when the bike was getting hot . I d try flicking it back wards and forwards a few times see if beds in then make a warranty claim if does not . Production is being ramped up and I would expect a few components to need replacing under warranty. It is necessary to iron out gremlins on any new bike particularly at this price point .

Great video as always Andy. For the tank dents; these are a throw back to the old trial days 1950s ish?) on the triumphs when they used to dent the tank to improve the turning circle. Obviously not required these days but personally I think it’s a nice nod to the past. Purely subjective of course as you said. BMW do this on the R Nine T I’ve noticed.
Anyway, for the money it seems like a nice bike but at this price point, I’m sure the Enfield Guerilla is more reliable. Too many small but potentially significant issues in my opinion. I’ve got a triumph trident. It’s booked in for a fault to be fixed next week which is very similar to your issue. The kill switch isn’t affected but when the bike is warm and slowing down when coming up to junctions, roundabouts etc, the engine just cuts out. You pull the clutch in and restart it and so far it starts every time, but it’s extremely annoying and potentially dangerous. Seems that many others are getting similar issues at roughly 3000 miles. Great bike, but this is surely a recall issue.

Hi Andy, great summary, and i do agree there are a few niggles with the Speed 400. My dislikes?, -................... I prefer a classic Speedo and seperate rev counter design, the front brake lever suits me perfectly, but the clutch lever is a different shape which means my finger tips are on top rather than in front of it, so would prefer adjustable levers, the chain guard just does`nt seem to suit the bike, far too short at the front end and too long and pointy at the back, and the switchgear as you say is a bit cheap and plasticky. I`ve never had the kill switch issue as you had, so it may be a fault with that particular bike. The fork relief indents in the tank don`t really bother me, many bikes have them, just different more stylish shapes, though this may result in smaller tank capacity, so i can understand why they`ve done it. The gearing is a bit too low in the first two gears, but, she is really easy to ride in slow traffic as a result, but some have fitted a 17 tooth front sprocket which makes a difference.
As for the positives?, far too many to mention, but here`s a few. she`s very light and nimble, very easy to flick around corners, even maintaining higher corner speeds than on my Twin, she`s very comfortable, though i do have the comfort seat on mine, she`s very easy around town, i use mine a lot for commuting, very economical, everything is perfectly placed, especially the side stand which seems to be in a place exactly where my foot swings up to, unlike the Speed Twin where you have to find it under the exhaust between the foot rest and gear lever, several times i`ve caught the gear lever and accidentally put in gear. The brakes are fantastic for a single disc, much stronger than my old single disc on my Street Cup, and the rear brake is surprisingly strong, i use a lot more rear brake than most.
BUT, by far and away the best positive for me, is the way it takes me back to the days of my first bike in 1975, a brand new Suzuki TS125M, the amount of fun i had on it was amazing, and fun that i`ve never had on any big powerful sports bikes. It`s a bike that takes you back to your youth, to really fun times, which sadly we all seem to lose as we get older. Who says you can`t re-live your youth, i do so every time i ride my 400.
The niggles i mention, apart from the odd chainguard, are a result of being built down to a budget, but when you compare the Speed 400 to other "budget bikes", it`s head and shoulders above, she`s a brilliant little bike, and one i`m really glad to have bought. If they did do a lot of improvements or upgrades, the price would have to go up, maybe Triumph should offer more different versions like they do with the 900?.

  • @nc30guy
    @nc30guy Місяць тому +1

Cut-outs in tank do give the bike a very good turning circle without the look of the frame stretched out at the headstock....as for the speedo and switchgear it is built to a tighter budget ....what I can say is putting a 16t front sprocket on the speed vastly improves its usability.......never had an issue with the kill switch on mine and no reports of that on forums so must just be the bike you had and maybe journo abuse 😆

  • @turboslag
    @turboslag Місяць тому

Had mine since mid June and generally agree with the points made, I do however have a few niggles of my own! First, and the most gripey is the instrumentation. No coolant temp on the display and the rev counter section is WAY too small, completely disproportionate to the huge speedo. Seco d, gearing is way too low, would be interested to hear if others have raised it and by how much, some t junctions can be taken in 3rd and I'm still running in! Third, comfort. Can't agree that it's so comfortable, 25 miles and I'm getting numb posterior! So it seems that could be my personal geometry, 6ft and average weight though, so nothing out of the ordinary. Also, I'm getting hot spots on the inside of my thumbs, so there must be an issue with the bars or grips. The engine characteristics took a little getting used to, but this is the newest bike I've had in some time, so that's probably me. It's a VERY oversquare bore stroke, and it looks like it could be desax, although I need to see an internal view of the engine to be certain. So it's revvy but at the same time flexible, thats a difficult trick to pull off with a single! Handling is superb, stable, highly flickable and responsive. Only slight issue I've noticed is that it doesn't like braking hard over bumps when say approaching a junction, but you can't have perfect suspension at this price! Build and finish is impressive for the price with very few signs of cost cutting. I've had the unexpected cut out but I'm pretty sure it was an inadvertent touch of the kill switch, it's only happened once. Only other thing to mention is that the engine top end seems noisy to me, especially when hot. I took it to the dealer for a tech to have a listen but he pronounced it fine, surprisingly! I'm not convinced but we'll see at the service. After that I'll be throwing a tail tidy, frame and fork protectors and an exhaust on it. Then do some serious miles and see if there's anything else I fancy fitting. Overall I'm delighted with it, at the price I think it's unbeatable.

Have had the Speed 400 (Indian variant) since mid October 23. Chose it as my weapon of choice to return to motorcycling after a gap of 6 years, riding a Duke 200 before the break.
Apart from more power, needed a more comfortable ride than the Dukes and the Triumph delivered, along with a host of useful features (for our roads anyway) and that classic roadster design.
I'm not too bothered by the indents in the tank, and the switch gear, while not the best, is decent for the incredible value proposition it brings especially over here. Mirrors do vibrate after crossing 5k rpm, and become unusable post 6.5k to 7k rpm. Trick is to keep the revs below 5.5k rpm. With the correct gear slotted, that is not a problem. I guess the lower speed limits on our roads also help in not running out of gears. But it a crying shame that the machine becomes so vibey post 6k rpm, when peak torque is delivered at 6.5k rpm. It also means that reaching peak power (at 8k rpm) output is virtually impossible as it vibrates violently post 7k rpm.
The engine kill switch issue did happen to me around 4 to 5 times. I assumed it was due to my gloves brushing against the switch when trying to grip the bar after adjusting the helmet visor with the right hand for the first couple of times. But it was apparent that wasn't the case when it happened again. It has stopped completely after an ecu update. But after another ecu update last month, engine is stalling sometimes in 2nd gear (kill switch remains on though).
Apart from these, the motorcycle is an absolute hoot to ride. Am having the tine of my life riding it to office and back, and longer rides to scenic places nearby, either with groups or solo.

My CCM did the same thing as it can be a result of lean burning Euro 5 emission compliant fuelling and a single cylinder machine with low flywheel momentum. BUT I've never had the kill switch move on me.

The kill switch is easy to flick but I never had an auto switch off
Twice or thrice I did hit my hand while riding but other than that no more issues. I've been riding my scrambler as it should be over bumps, soft road and all but no issues in bumps or jumps..

Very handsome bike. Especially at the price point. You said clutching at straws so many time that I google what it means! 😂

The switches on both bikes looks a bit ‘Fisher Price’

Had my Speed 400 a few weeks and had the kill switch issue twice, the first time while waiting at lights, in neutral hands off the bars, no bumps, seems it just randomly flipped. The second time while pulling out of my driveway with a full lock, it threw me off and at first i thought i'd stalled it but wouldn't start until i set the switch to run so fairly sure it cut out on it's own. Overtaking a concern but when moving slowly also a worry. Love the bike otherwise so far (250 miles...)

That kill switch issue is really quite serious, imagine it happening on an overtake, or even during slow speed manoeuvres which could result in a drop. Triumph need to do a recall.
My local dealer is waiting for the first Voge 350 and RE Guerrilla demos; it will be interesting to see how they compare.
    This summer has been 💩!!!!
