The circuits are the same in the 808 and 808 mini. Exactly the same, on every value of every resistance and capacitance. The TS9 has a slightly different final voltage divider configuration at the very tail end of the output buffer that raises the output by a fraction of a percent, and has absolutely no impact on the tone of the signal. There is FAR more difference in these pedals due to the tolerances of the individual components than there is between their designs. Most of the capacitors in the filters have tolerances of 10%. You might like one TS-808 mini and hate another one because the high pass filter in the clipping stage of the circuit of one pedal is 10% higher, and 10% lower in the other, but there's no way you can predict whether a TS-808 will sound better than a TS-9 or vice versa, because they might as well be the same product. Also, if they did a blind test I would bet money that they couldn't tell which was which.
kc collette Good point. They all three use two BJTs each for the input and output buffers. Now it probably wouldn't degrade the signal much, but it's probably a bigger difference than the changed resistor values in the output buffers.
In the end when you are up on stage and you got your Big sky or RV6 or DD7 or whatever the difference probably wouldn't show and if it did, the user would probably change their pedal slightly to suit what they like and to suit the venue. And then as your valves warm up it may change again....or if you are an outdoor venue or...or...or.. I just got a cheap TS9 and be done with it lol
I've been confused between the TS9 and the TS808 for like 2 weeks now, and you guys have released the best shoot out video on UA-cam, Thank you and I made up my mind , TS9 it is
I currently have a mini, and its really greet, but one of the best things is because it's small and narrow, you can get it nicely close to another overdrive, or distortion or clean boost like the spark boost. Then you can turn 2 pedals on and off at the same time, if necessary.
Hahn Jackers having a vintage Marshall in an andertons video would be super cool to watch. But they really have to crank to hear the best of those amps.
yeah. maybe they could go out on a field. Boy would I love it. A cranked Major with little bass cuz their tubes sucked and thry could blow up. How Blackmore put more tubes and got a 300 watt beast is beyond me....
Hahn Jackers I would assume he, or an elecrtical engineer spent the time, and money, to make the project a reality. as Shia Lebouf has said " make your dreams a reality, just do it."
I'm 55 years old been playing since I'm 15. My first electric guitar experience around 1980 shortly thereafter a friend had a digital delay pedal then I remember a tube screamer coming in a Wawa pedal all of those with such exciting revelations in life. Then I got it Ibanez stereo chorus which I hooked up to two separate amps and I was the king of the high school scene. At least in my own mind LOL the tube screamer has such a great deep place in my heart specially because I'm a big Stevie Ray Vaughan fan but I love the ACDC type tones I've always able to count on Ibanez Tube Screamer like a solid friend. So thanks for paying such great tribute to my friend, our friend LOL
Thanks for helping me decide how good the mini TS sounds. Picking it up for my son for Christmas. Lee btw has some great bluesy chops. I think he deserves more credit than he gets.
Juan Garcia That's true. The spectrum is overdrive (light), distortion (medium) and fuzz (heavy) and the tube screamers are marketed as over drive pedals.
I finally got my TS9 the other day! :D I've been trying to see what I can come up with by combining that with my MXR Super Badass distortion. At first, I wanted to have them be 50/50. Y'know, half Overdrive, half Distortion. But, now I've been trying to make the TS9 as kind of the body/core and a little bit of the MXR Super Badass to kind of add a little bit of crispness to it.
17:45 when a guitarist controlling the tone reacts like this, there is no argument...hahaha that's like a GAStronectomy. Tone Achieved! +1000 pts "That sounds MINT!" "Let's try this one" "NAAAAAAAAH!"
I thought the TS9 and the mini sounded exactly the same. There was something I liked about the 808 a little more. For this kind of shootout, I really prefer blind demonstrations, like 1, 2, 3, and then a reveal at the end which clip was which pedal.
It's great seeing these old reviews. I'm not sure how much liquid was consumed at lunch, but I'd love to see the new Andertons reviews after a liquid lunch!
thank you for mentioning the LEDs on ibanez! my main lighting tech for two years really liked how my guitar looked under red light, so my side of the stage always was hit with a couple of red cans. this meant i never knew if my TS9DX was on or off. led to some very underwhelming opening riffs and some way aggressive gentle chords to start a song.
Hi Guys, I bought A TS9 in 1982, it still works…… and does its job. Thanks for your grand support in choosing things…… Greets from Hamburg. I'm playing on VOX Amps from Pathfinder in the Living Room over to AC 12 in the rehearsal room, up to AC30 on stage. Two E-Guits: A '92 Telcasrter Model, '52 reissue, …. and an Aria Pro II Gibson Humbucker upgraded, Signature Model. Rock on Guys! :-) Herb
Hey Lee, you might not see this but I think better than setting up 150 different pedals for demos, set up a few different SMALL pedalboards with 5 different price points for 5 different types of pedals. In other words, get a small pedalboard with 5 overdrive pedals from cheapest to most expensive, then another small pedalboard with 5 different clean boosts, compressors, etc. I think it would get people to buy more pedals, personally. Buying pedals is always a weird thing in stores, at least here in the US, having to bug a salesman to go into the case and get a bunch of different pedals and set them all up for you to play, just feels like such a burden. Just a suggestion, from a customer of music stores!
Yeah, your vids are great! just really feels like were hanging out together and geeking out over guitar greatness.great info in a really hangout way, not too short either. Really fun to put it simply.🤘🏻
Shouldnt the shoot out have each pedal isolated from each other ? IE in true bypass loop for each pedal ? at least to give each pedal to react against a high impedance source each ? That might (partially) explain some of the slight characteristic differences ? (IE Ts buffer bypass into a TS808 is going to react differently to a direct guitar input source)
A guitar always sounds different when you are the one playing in the moment. Even if you play an exact recording back to yourself it will sound different to you for some reason.
I'm buying the Tube Screamer Mini on payday. All three pedals sounds superb. If you did a blindfold challenge I doubt anyone could convincingly guess which was which. £59 is a steal!
Potentiometers (Overdrive/Level/Gain) have a tolerance of +/-10% or sometimes +/-20%. So even though you have all your knobs set to 12 o'clock, they could sound "10%" different. If you want to take things to the extreme and assume that you have one stomp box with pots that are all -20%, and the one next to it has pots sitting at +20% of the given value, the pedals can sound "40%" different. There are a bunch of other factors (capacitor and resistor tolerance) that can affect it as well. I don't want to rustle everyone's jimmies. Just pointing out some electronics facts.
soad11dude That is true and the problem is much worse with fuzz pedals because they already sit on a fine line between usable and junk. With a distortion pedal, you try a dozen different pedals. With a fuzz pedal, you may have to try 12 different pedals that are the same model.
True! Fuzz pedals are usually a very simple design and don't need to be off by much to completely miss the mark and sound like ass. I'm happy I got an educated answer instead of somebody saying I'm wrong and writing an angry comment in CAPS!!!! Cheers.
I'm totally with Rob on this one - the TS-9 sounds the best to my ear. The mini has an interesting edge to it that could certainly work for many people and many tones, but it's not as pleasing for whatever reason. The 808 just doesn't thrill me at all.
very similar sounding, pretty much the same. Would it even make a difference in a band/mix? probably not considering things end up getting eq'd etc. I was laughing my ass off when rob said "that one isnt doing it for me" when they sounded the same.
You are absolutely correct. Only corksniffers really dissect this all to a point where it's beyond ridiculous. You audience doesn't know (or care) about the nuances that guitarists obsess over. And within a band setting..........very negligible. There are so many pedals that are variations on the Tube Screamers that really, what's the point? Sorry to rant, but you're correct.
There comes a point when its not about the crowd. 50% of the crowd couldn't tell a 59 les paul from a guitar from toys r us. It also depends on every players individual ear. Anyone can tell the difference between an awful and a great tone, but it takes a well trained ear to hear whats great and whats better. Its also much harder to hear differences through a youtube video. The band point is good because it would be quite a bit more negligible in a live mix, except for the guitar player, who will play better if they think their tone is better.
There’s zero difference between TS models. The real difference is the potentiometers used, because of the difference in resistance. This would apply to two different TS9s even. Two made in the same week by the same factory could sound fairly different from one another. It’s a very inconsistent build. ua-cam.com/video/3c5Ar-iaWRE/v-deo.html
Since this pedal is designed to feed into an amp that is overdriven, it would be great to hear it going into one of those Tone City pedals that is feeding a clean amp, like a fender deluxe. I am not a guitarist by any means, but the mini sounded kinda like the Tone City blues pedal to my ears.
I think the reason Rob enjoyed the Tubescreamers on a lower-tuned guitar is because a TS by nature cuts bass and bumps the upper mids up, giving those low strings a lot of definition and punch.
ha!! thats actually a great idea!. take the guts out, stick it somewhere under the pickguard or in the cavity in the back and a new switch. and a few small knobs and there you go. sooooo much easier to change the knobs etc.
Or a battery, lol. Same with piezo systems, active pickups, Creation Audio Labs Redeemer, Sustainiac Stealth Pro, and so many other accessories. Running power to an internal component isn't an issue :)
Rob Chapman I love your videos and a big fan from the U.S. BUT, would having all of them linked up affect each others sound? The mini tube screamer is at the end and sounds like it has a bit more bite, but would that be from the coloration from the two previous pedals in the chain sequence? If Im wrong please correct me, I don't mean to sound snobby in any way if anything I humbly ask if im wrong please teach/correct me. Thanks!
This is probably one of the most brilliant videos you've ever done. I'm not a pedal guy for getting tone, but of course I've heard about the famed "Tube Screamer" since practically day 1; so when I finally looked into it simply out of curiosity, I was confused as hell to find there are like 20 different ones! So which "one" has everyone been talking about???
I just got an Ibanez TS9 tube screamer and it sounds great through the brown channel on the boss katana. Drive off on the pedal , tone and level at 12 o’clock
don't actually know about that, but there should be a "sense of humour" switch somewhere in your brain... try and switch it on, it can do wonders sometimes! :)
does Anderton's carry the BluGuitar Amp 1. Would love to see Rob and the Captain do a video on it... Thinking about getting one. I will check Andertons Web sight, but would appreciate an answer....
loved the Flash Gordon, references! Only a bunch of the audience will understand these, yay for the lucky ones -like us- who saw the movie when it came out 😊👍
Chappers....You are the result of a guitarist that has spent many hours riffing and perfecting the rock sounds. A good example of constant practice benefits. This show alone has gained you ground. YYYYEEEEUUUAAAAH
It's cheaper to buy a TS-9 from America even with the shipping costs, you'll save £30/£40 altogether. Andertons will rip you off. I'm in the UK and had mine sent from New York because the prices are extortionate over here. Only had to wait a week and didn't feel like I was being robbed.
+ouncy It's not just pedals - its's amps and guitars - in fact - everything with 6 or more strings and related items. Look st the price of a Fender Deluxe - that's why the UK is known as Treasure Island. Oh - I bought a Bassbreaker 007 amp from Andertons for £201 and - one week later - it was £43 more - explanations other than GG and PMT were selling at this price!
monabri Yeah man, recently bought a new strat, Andertons were selling it for £680, after a quick look over websites that aren't usually listed on google shopping, I managed to get it for £528 from a different shop. Free shipping still. Saved £150. Pretty bad to be honest.
It's mostly due to taxes. When you compare the prices of andertons to chains in countries with almost the same taxes as the UK andertons are usually cheaper. If i compare the 5150 LBX here in Sweden, On Andertons and on Thomann the prices of Thomann and Andertons are cheaper then the swedish price. The price between Andertons and Thomann... Andertons(£430) and Thomann (€566) in swedish kronor £430 is 5160kr and €566 is 5250kr the only price i could find in Sweden is 5500kr. The price i find in america is $699 and that is 5820kr...
Have you changed cameras or the way the vids are encoded? This vid and the last one seem to have that 'soap opera' frame interpolation feel to them... Or is it just me?
These guys are great! Can u imagine having them over for a dinner party? The banter between them is sharp, sassy, streetwise and vital. 5 stars for entertainment. ty 4 vid.
That just reminded me of something, when is chapman going to do pedals??? I swear you had a few proto types a while back but I havent heard anything since
***** proud of lots of things..star wars is just like a childrens tale of good Vs evil - i can watch the passing parade of good and bad people in my life -or read the bible at the least . I tried watching it once ....it all seemed rather juvenile and silly - but thats just me ...now go and graze with all the other sheep pal.
The jam at 25:46 is really cool. Is that improve or what is that? I've tried the Ibanez TS9 model. i am sold on that one. i haven't tried the others however... the ibanez was awesome when i jamed with it. it has killer sustain and tone. i tried it with a burst bucker pick up which was the best i could use at the guitar center at the time. it works best with the amp on distortion and reverb. if you use a gibson, don't use the 59 pick ups. if you want to scream you need a pick up that screams also.
Chewb screamer?
***** Its a South of England thing :-)
***** nah it's a Star Wars and TS wordplay :P
***** They'd be called valve screamers if we had our way.
But we still wouldnt call a "Pube" a "Poob" 😃

i guess bed can wait another 33 minutes...

The fact that you combined Star Wars, Tubescreamers, and guitar into one video makes this the best video on UA-cam. Mint!
I've been confused between the TS9 and the TS808 for like 2 weeks now, and you guys have released the best shoot out video on UA-cam, Thank you and I made up my mind , TS9 it is

Suchtinator999 I got the joke right away, but I still thought it was a common phrase at first.

i would love to see you guys do a marshall head shootout, Super Lead vs JCM800?
***** I SECOND THAT
***** Imagine they could find a major.... Sonic mayhem. If they do it, they need to play Blackmore for the Super- Lead and Schenker for the JCM 800

People like the video before they see it. People just do that
adam humphreys I like what I like God dammit!
Thanks for helping me decide how good the mini TS sounds. Picking it up for my son for Christmas. Lee btw has some great bluesy chops. I think he deserves more credit than he gets.
you guys are beginning to feel more and more like my drug dealers
Lol
side HUSTLE?
Maybe you're just watching these while you're on drugs.
You guy's are seriously the best at reviews! I love how you're both informative but keep humor with it. Definitely getting a TS9 Mini :)
Same
But it has no buffer
I use two and they work great together
Easily the most underrated pedal on the market!
I love you guys!! you guys do great with your reviews and just make them great to watch because you make them fun and funny!!!
I think I really like the Mini Screamer. Besides the sound, it appears to have the only true bypass button.
Loved the episode with all the Star Wars banter! Converted me from the 808 to 9
I never really use my TS9 for distortion.
I either use amp distortion, or my ProCo Rat 2, and then stomp on the TS9 for a boost to my lead tone.
That's the function it was supposed to fulfill in the beginning. It's more of a boost pedal than a distortion pedal
Juan Garcia That's true. The spectrum is overdrive (light), distortion (medium) and fuzz (heavy) and the tube screamers are marketed as over drive pedals.
John S Yup. Pushing a cranked amp or goosing another drive pedal is how it's best used.
Yep. Sweet boost.
You always manage to be incredibly entertaining, absolutely amazing people!

The ts9 has to be one of the best invention ever.

Rewatching this years later. It's comedy gold. I am so entertained
I thought the TS9 and the mini sounded exactly the same. There was something I liked about the 808 a little more. For this kind of shootout, I really prefer blind demonstrations, like 1, 2, 3, and then a reveal at the end which clip was which pedal.
totally agree

What is the riff that Rob is playing at 0:12? It sounds familiar but I can't figure out what it is.
Beat It by Michael Jackson, but I think the guitar throughout is song is performed by Eddie Van Halen
I came to hear a comparison of three overdrive pedals. I saw two middle aged men playing with toys from a sci fi movie.
And that's a problem?
Hi Guys,
I bought A TS9 in 1982, it still works…… and does its job.
Thanks for your grand support in choosing things……

The TS Mini is like jelly beans in my mouth.
The TS808 is like soft, grainy sand.
The TS9 is like pointed sticks.
Yes.
Thanks for the upload, been stuck deciding on which Tube screamer I want

Good idea

I like it, and i want it in my fingers.
TOTAL mostly stacked tritones with chromatic modulations based around the diminished scale.

TOTAL I have not yet got to 8:36 ...and I'm slightly pensive, but mostly curious ._.
TOTAL diminished/tritone arpegiating...he does have a nice bluesy touch to it. typically thats a metal or classical scale.

what's the song rob plays at 8:00? he's played it a lot and I"ve always liked it I'd like to know where it's from
At 24:30 omg amazing tone
Where is this riff from? He begins playing it at 7:58 . Or it's it something he just came up with? It sounds familiar.
You should also add OD808 and OD9 from Maxon (as Maxon is manufacturer for original TubeScreamers).
Damn dude you've got a new video everyday. Thanks for keeping me entertained and informed.
Thanks for the Vai riff.
Nothing says awesome like combining loud guitars and Star Wars figures into one video!

Wow!!!! This vid was updated on my birthday. Awesome! And Rob, I do prefer the TS9 as well. Greetings from Brasil!
Highlight of the video:
"HAWKMAN, DIIIIIIIIIVVVE!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Compare the 808 and the mini with the same settings, please. I think the different knob orientation threw them a bit with those two.
Rob you should make an SG style guitar after the V!
Thanks for the A/B comparisons. Helped me decide which Tubescreamer is right for my setup.🎉
Since this pedal is designed to feed into an amp that is overdriven, it would be great to hear it going into one of those Tone City pedals that is feeding a clean amp, like a fender deluxe. I am not a guitarist by any means, but the mini sounded kinda like the Tone City blues pedal to my ears.
that little lead lick from the captain at 30:56 sounds insane! Great video!
I wish you guys had a TS10 with you, by far my favourite :)
Love the bluey finish on that loud wiry thing.
"...the genuine Joyo, er I mean, Ibanez mini-Tube Screamer..." LOL
I've been waiting for this video for years!
Guys, It would be a Wookiewok
i liked the different guitars going through the pedals really showed the differences between the guitars and tone
I think the reason Rob enjoyed the Tubescreamers on a lower-tuned guitar is because a TS by nature cuts bass and bumps the upper mids up, giving those low strings a lot of definition and punch.
It was accidentally tailor-made for low tunings.
thanks, exactly the comparison I was looking for. it's the Mini for me.
I love this show.
i just love how these guys get off topic...brilliant..
I think I'll go with the mini one... because I can get it built into my guitar :D
ha!! thats actually a great idea!. take the guts out, stick it somewhere under the pickguard or in the cavity in the back and a new switch. and a few small knobs and there you go. sooooo much easier to change the knobs etc.

Oh yeah. I was just thinking that the little reissue doesn't have a spot for a battery
It doesn't need to have one, it can be easily modified.
Thanks!
24:19 - That harmonic.
murderous harmonic
Finally!!!! Iv been looking forward to this for ever!!!!!!!!?!
@21:05 "I want a green one" LMAO
You need to do this test again with something like a Boss Katana which a lot of people have. Not everyone will be using a 2-3k amp like Rob.
I just got an Ibanez TS9 tube screamer and it sounds great through the brown channel on the boss katana. Drive off on the pedal , tone and level at 12 o’clock
Best review of pedals ever! :D
Is this a fucking star wars show?
How can I stop this pair of comedy clowns appearing on my Search list. Is there a setting that I can select. Help please?
don't actually know about that, but there should be a "sense of humour" switch somewhere in your brain... try and switch it on, it can do wonders sometimes! :)
+Carl Windsor you're fine... markus o is just a punk ass bitch
HAWKMEN, DIIVEE!
Star wars, Chappers and Captain, and pedals... Amazingness all in one
Thanks, @Rob Chapman I bought the mini and that was the best decision I could've taken
Or you can have the Maxon OD808 with the real original chip and circuit... and for less
The mini sounds incredible! Thanks guys!

does Anderton's carry the BluGuitar Amp 1. Would love to see Rob and the Captain do a video on it... Thinking about getting one. I will check Andertons Web sight, but would appreciate an answer....
loved the Flash Gordon, references! Only a bunch of the audience will understand these, yay for the lucky ones -like us- who saw the movie when it came out 😊👍
totally agree
Chappers....You are the result of a guitarist that has spent many hours riffing and perfecting the rock sounds. A good example of constant practice benefits. This show alone has gained you ground. YYYYEEEEUUUAAAAH
Proper lol at the Brian Blessed part.. nearly woke my family up from sleeping :\
Worth watching just for the Flash Gordon references. Loved it! Thanks for the pedal review too!
Never pay the price marked at a retail guitar store. Unlike a store like Walmart there is always room for negotiating.
Hmmm I find prices here in the U.S. to be freakin ridiculously high, even compared to 'Andertons' ... On guitars, amps well crap you name its higher
Have you changed cameras or the way the vids are encoded? This vid and the last one seem to have that 'soap opera' frame interpolation feel to them... Or is it just me?
You boys need to lay off the wacky weed before filing. :-)
These guys are great! Can u imagine having them over for a dinner party? The banter between them is sharp, sassy, streetwise and vital. 5 stars for entertainment. ty 4 vid.
Couldn't take my focus off that out of tune guitar.
Crazy how much better the gold top sounded!
I have never seen a single Star Wars movie.
You should probably get on that
derMemory skip the prequels and you'll be fine.
Then you have never truly lived
Same!
derMemory Worth a watch but a bit overrated tbh.
That just reminded me of something, when is chapman going to do pedals??? I swear you had a few proto types a while back but I havent heard anything since
James Nixon Apparently the pedals didn't really come out how they wanted them or something.
Zac Miller ah, I was looking forward too them as the guitars have never appealed to me.
i have proudly never watched star wars -now i know why .
The force is not with you.
TRAITOOORRRRRR
TRAITOOORRRRRR
***** proud of lots of things..star wars is just like a childrens tale of good Vs evil - i can watch the passing parade of good and bad people in my life -or read the bible at the least . I tried watching it once ....it all seemed rather juvenile and silly - but thats just me ...now go and graze with all the other sheep pal.
***** i am proud for you and of you .
The jam at 25:46 is really cool. Is that improve or what is that? I've tried the Ibanez TS9 model. i am sold on that one. i haven't tried the others however... the ibanez was awesome when i jamed with it. it has killer sustain and tone. i tried it with a burst bucker pick up which was the best i could use at the guitar center at the time. it works best with the amp on distortion and reverb. if you use a gibson, don't use the 59 pick ups. if you want to scream you need a pick up that screams also.
list of the whitest things i've ever seen:
