80% of this review is focused on the taste/texture. For those of you more interested in a deep dive on the nutrition, & who don't care much about taste, you're probably looking for other reviews.

If you're into the hot and savoury products remember to shake the bag and use a spoon afterwards to mix the ingredients properly. Also, leave it for 8-10 mins to cook rather than the recommended 5 minutes. The difference will be massive! And the meals will look and taste better. Their protein bars don't taste good and are over priced. If you're into the ready to drink products skip version 1 and go to version 2 which is much better. Hope this helps!

As someone who's used Huel for a long time you're completely right on the taste. I'm more charitable to the chocolate and strawberry powders (which I usually mix with a scoop of protein powder so that also probably helps) but I generally avoid the premade drinks because of their bizarre aftertaste. Of the hot and readys I've basically never found one that was very good. You'd be better off just making dehydrated camping food, because that's essentially what Hot and Ready is.
That all being said, this kind of product isn't for people who would prefer it to regular food, it's mostly for people who are very busy or otherwise don't want to invest the time in the making meals. I started with these kinds of foods when I was in graduate school while working full time as a nurse. There were days where I'd work for 12 hours from 7 am to 7 pm, then exercise afterwards until 9, and then I'd really only have a sliver of time in the evening before bed and in the morning before work to eat. On other days I'd have clinical hours, class, all manner of responsibilities. It was extremely convenient to have a high calorie nutritionally complete meal that I could literally just drink in seconds while I go out the door, or something I could bring to work or class with me as a powder that I could just mix with some water. The Black edition powders especially have great caloric and macronutrient combos for my particular nutrition goals, and a single drink of black edition in the morning (along with a scoop of protein powder) will keep me full and satiated well into lunch. I don't have to be at a hospital at 7 am sharp anymore, but even working from home not having to make a real breakfast lets me sleep in an extra half hour. You could make shakes that approximate the nutrient content, and they'd taste better, but even then the time commitment would be very slanted in Huel's favor. I make my own shakes for many of my lunches, and it takes me maybe 15 - 20 minutes to gather all the ingredients, mix, blend, and then clean up. Huel I can be completely done drinking it and cleaned up inside of 5.
That being said, unless you're some kind of sociopath these products (Huel, Soylent, etc...) will not sufficiently replace real food. I agree with you on the micronutrient side, and on that front these should not replace real foods like leafy greens, whole grains, etc... but if you're in a pinch, and the alternative is either not eating at all, or just eating a bowl of cereal which will not meet your nutrient needs and will leave you feeling famished an hour later, it's hard to find something better than this. Believe it or not, Huel tastes significantly better than some alternatives on the market...
I'd be interested in a review of Soylent, though! Soylent tastes a bit better and is smoother, but to me feels more "artificial." At least with Huel (the powders and hot and readts) you can tell you're drinking something approximating food. Soylent feels truly foreign.

Wait so this Huel thing...like Green powders and protein shakes...like the longer you drink these the more effect it's gonna have on your skin with acne and diarrhea maybe...even tho it has a decent amount of macronutrients...idk about the micronutrients...and does it have decent amount of good fats? I know it has the 40g for protein but what kind of protein?
Sure this doesn't replace whole foods but...some days I don't want to cook or even go out with these damn gas prices or if I'm working and don't want to get food. So the protein bars are hard to eat this I'll opt for the powder...
Idk guess I'll have to taste it and see if I can stick with it and shouldn't be a struggle or make me bloated and gassy.

I'd been interested in trying Huel due to the expense involved with buying food from the grocery store being pretty high since I have to pay delivery fees for store shopping services like insta-cart and being on a severely fixed income to boot.
$105 is still far cheaper than what I'm paying otherwise for basic ingredients that usually don't last me a full month.
This helped put things into perspective for me. Thank you.
As far as Soylent... I don't care how good it is because all I can think of is Soylent green and what that contained in the movie ...

I used Huel shakes for a while once a day. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the flavour and wouldn’t crave it, but what I did notice was that I was feeling really good and had more energy. Their biggest selling point is not to taste amazing, it is to make it easier to get the nutrients you need and save time. You can get the nutrients you need by going to the grocery store but obviously that takes planning and time.

I just got my first Huel delivery today and honestly, i don't mind it. Been having issues with a hernia that causes me severe stomach pain whenever i eat solid food but it can't be fixed yet as I'm too overweight for the surgery. Had my first shake about 2 hours ago and normally I'd be reaching for a packet of crisps or something by now and i still feel full thanks to all the protein that's in it (40g per serving, black edition). I also have a disability and struggle to prepare proper meals for myself (which lead to the weight gain as i was living off takeout food) so to not really have to do anything strenuous like stand preparing a meal, then clean the kitchen and do dishes, feels great as I'll finally be getting the vitamins i need and more importantly lose some weight so i can get my hernia fixed. It takes a real toll on your mental health when you can't do a basic thing like cook a meal without someone's help so in a way it's given me a bit of my independence back too. It's not for everyone and that's okay, the world would be a freakin boring place if we all liked the same things, but for me it's hitting the spot

I don’t have to worry about balancing cause it’s balanced for me. It’s definitely not for every one. And after using for a about 3 days straight only drinking Huel I’ll crave actual foods or more importantly fat and salt. But that’s just me and my cravings. Thank you for the honest review. I feel like there are a lot of reviews, especially regarding the Huel liquid meals that are a bit suspect on YT. I've had a few of the drinks, and just got the V2 selection box recently and they all (so far) have this odd after taste, but it's not just that, most of that flavours/recipes are just unnecessarily bad ie Vanilla, which is WAY better from other brands, so there's really no excuse (tried Ice Coffee Caramel yesterday and it was a REAL struggle to get through). Unfortunately I get the impression, from Huel's FB page, that they don't really care about trying to improve these drink recipes, which is a shame, because nutritionally, for convenience and diet-wise they're very good. So far though I can say the Hot and Savoury meals I've tried are decent and intend to try some of the other flavours.

I have just started on Huel Shakes and Hot and Savoury for weight loss and I can definitely confirm it an acquired taste. I'm not expecting it to be as super tasty or as pleasurable as food, but to be honest the pleasures of food is what got me here in the first place. The shakes are ok and you can add a teaspoon of honey for favour and the hot meals are actually averagely nice. I think the video completely misses why Huel is an option. Do you need to lose weight. Do you struggle to cook healthy foods regularly for various reasons? Do you struggle to control your calorie intake? Do you always feel hungry even though you have eaten sufficiently? If the answer is yes to all these questions then Huel is a really great way to lose and control weight gain. I have Huel 5 out of 7 days and once I reach my weight goal I plan to adjust to a normal dinner and Huel inbetween. I have lost 8lbs in the first week so far and I am happy with the progress and I'm definitely not as hungry all the time as I used to be.

I’ve been using Huel for over 2 years now and typically have 3 black powder meals per day and a hot and savory meal. This gives me a little over 140 grams of protein per day and right at 1600 calories per day. It has helped me stay away from fast food and eating less when going out on the weekends. You’ll find yourself not ordering an appetizer and maybe sharing a meal with a friend because you ate one of these before leaving the house. I love Huel, it’s a great solution to unhealthy eating.

I completely agree with you the extremely bad oat taste in the powder shakes chocolate flavour was what made me cancel. I tried to push through it so hard and think of the health benefits, I tried it with water as suggested on the product, but it was horrible. Then tried it with milk as I was trying to gain weight, but it made it even worse as the oats just make the milk curdle and go thick. But realised I was forcing it down myself and not enjoying it at all. The chocolate flavoured shakes tasted nothing like chocolate at all and just like sickly tasting oats. After having a 1 or 2 shakes per day it started to taste like what I can only describe as a stomach churning vomit.

I've come into Huel via the RTG drinks. However, I've recently tried the bars and I am most definately not going to try them again.
I've seen the reccomendations for the 'Greens' option recently so might be trying that.
Of the drinks, the chocolate is the nicest version because of its thickness. All of the others are too thin for me.
I have used them as meal replacements though and they have worked out really well for that. I'm a OTR/Lorry driver and I'd prefer not to eat at the places I deliver too unless there is no other choice. Carrying a bottle of RTG chocolate huel has freed me from that prison and does actually help for food. I'm also drinking a lot more water these days but I want to steer away from snacking on chocolate bars. So the Huel Chocolate covers me for that.
I've yet to try the other stuff. I'm sure I will though because there are times I come home from work starving but I should really goto bed straight away because I'm back in work 9 hours later....

I’m going to be trying huel powder soon. I commonly use soylent when I don’t have time or am too lazy for a proper meal. But huel seems to have more whole foods where soylent is mostly isolated refined nutrients. The biggest difference I’m interested in is that fibrous oats that’ll slow absorption seems like a healthier way to consume carbs than the refined maltodextrin in soylent.
Starting with original & unflavored unsweetened, seems like most of the flavored items aren’t really worth it by the looks of it. And as long as what I get is filling & palatable I don’t care too much about flavor. Just compensating for nutritional shortfalls & making sure I don’t go through the day on an empty stomach

Regardless of how they tasted, it's pretty clear that after the first few tries you had already decided that the next drinks weren't going to taste good. I understand that it's nearly impossible to remove bias from something, but the amount of bias in this review was very extreme. To recommend that someone doesn't buy food because you don't like the way that it tastes? Many people do enjoy it and I found several review videos that actually included taste as one of the pros. Also, that black bag is not the chocolate edition, it's the additional protein addition.

Hey Christian! Perhaps you are right that I wasn’t expecting to like them by the end, but I definitely would have loved to enjoy them since I ended up throwing the rest of the my $100+ order away. I would have hoped to not waste my money. I’m not sure how I would be biased though going in…I purchased these myself and have no affiliation with the company. I have no bias to try to get people to buy Huel or not…I’m just sharing my personal opinion (which is kind of the point of a review 🙃).
I think it’s pretty reasonable to not recommend food if you don’t like it. Just like I wouldn’t recommend a recipe or a restaurant if I tried it and didn’t like, I wouldn’t recommend a food product like Huel if I tried it and found it totally unpalatable. I honestly don’t think I could trust someone’s review if they recommended it despite not enjoying it at all…(that would be weird and probably unethical to a certain extent for them to do lol). But maybe lying would have been better to not tarnish peoples expectations?
But anyways, I’m glad some people enjoy it! I’m not wishing anyone to have a bad experience with it…so I hope everyone likes it more than I did! There are different formulations in different countries as well, so perhaps that could be a reason for differences in preferences.

Those nutrients you are scrolling past aren't added separately; they are in the foods themselves. All those amino acids are naturally in the plants. So, to your point about adding those nutrients or if you really need them: They aren't added, and YES you need them. It's nice that they are tracking these nutrient levels for you, which is not normally done or listed on regular nutrition labels. There are some nutrients added that you will see in the ingredients list, and yes, you need those, too. They are good for you. Most people aren't getting enough micronutrients, and quite honestly, it's very difficult to overdose on them, so be happy that they are there. You do realize these products were designed with the help of nutritionists, right?

    • @MissSarahEK

@@MissSarahEK I already mentioned that there are added nutrients in the ingredient list, so did you read my comment well enough? I was commenting on how you were scrolling through all those amino acids while you were saying they added so many things. In fact, they didn't add very much; they only added some basic nutrients to the ingredients which is very usual and very healthy.
I was not commenting on your opinion of the product at all. I was commenting on your misleading the viewer.
You're coming to a lot of assumptions and being defensive. I don't have a particularly favorable opinion of Huel. They use Sucralose which is not a good thing to consume. Studies show it leads to inflammation in rats, among other negative effects. However, some people will definitely benefit from Huel, especially if they are not meeting their nutrient requirements from illness or old age, so I would recommend it to certain people if they could tolerate some Sucralose intake.

    • @MissSarahEK
      @MissSarahEK  Рік тому

I certainly don't mean to be overly defensive, but I think you are misinterpreting what I said in the video and accusing me of "misleading the viewer", so I feel the need to respond to defend myself. I don't think your comment is a fair assessment of what I said or implied in this video. In the "nutrition" portion of the video, I scrolled past the nutrition facts as well as the ingredient list (on the bar). From website screen recording, I did scroll past the amino acids list on the website, but I also scrolled past many other sections of the nutrition section, including the part when they are talking about the plant-based proteins they use and their ingredients.
In the "nutrition" portion of the video, below is exactly what I said. I never said that every nutrient listed on the nutritional facts is added separately (I never even mentioned individually added ingredients at all in this section). Did I do a line-by-line comparison of the nutrient facts and the ingredient list, to see what ones which added separately? No...I did not do that. The purpose of this video was a review of my experience, not to do an in-depth examination of every single nutrient and ingredient. But I think it's clear from the nutrient facts many of these are added as individual ingredients.
      Transcript:
"Really the biggest selling point of Huel is the nutritional aspect of their products. So what they say on their website is 'not only does Huel meet the US Daily Values (DV) for all macro- and micronutrients, but it provides a sustained source of energy and has a wealth of other benefits'
And I can definitely see what they are talking about, because when I looked at the nutrition facts for the items I ordered, it was the longest nutritional facts I have literally ever seen. There were so many nutrients tracked, it was basically like it was some sort of multivitamin or something.
And then on top of that, all of the Huel products are plant-based, which I think is great. That being said, of course with any type of supplement, you should really be thinking about your specific situation. Talk to your doctor if you are not sure about what you should be consuming.
Personally, I’m a little skeptical of things like this when it’s so many different nutrients where…. Do we really need all of that? You know, I don’t know, Make your own decision on that. But that is really the “unique” factor of Huel."
(sorry for the long comment... but it gets exhausting dealing with the seemingly endless negative comments on this video 😔).

    • @incognitocat555
      @incognitocat555 Рік тому

@@MissSarahEK I'm sorry you are getting so many negative comments. Not to condescend, but I'll try to explain better so maybe I can be helpful.
One way to reduce negative comments is to be accurate in your assessments. You are misleading the viewer when you show all the amino acids and promptly say things such as "it's so many different nutrients," that you are "skeptical," and you question the necessity of nutrients. (This is your last paragraph you cited).
      This is misleading because:
      1. Huel did not add "so many things." They added a few vitamins (and none of the amino acids), which is quite typical for products like Huel. You didn't explicitly say they added the amino acids, but your video leads the viewer to believe they did.
      2. Saying you're skeptical and "do we really need all that?" further implies they added much more than what is typical, and it makes the viewer think Huel could be unhealthy.
      3. The nutrients that were added actually are very healthy, and yes, we do need them. This comment is misleading, because the viewer is pushed to think about if Huel is unhealthy or if they added any fad ingredients. The ingredients that were added are well-researched and provide optimal health.
It would have been better to rephrase your concerns as it applies to you and not people as a whole. You use the term "we" when you say "Do we really need all that?" When you use "we" here, it implies that this product is sensational in a bad way. You could've said something more like: "I don't find any value in these nutrients for myself, and I'm not sure if I need them."
You almost revoke your sentiment when you say "Make your own decision on that," but you've already bashed Huel as possibly unhealthy or fad-like, so it doesn't make up for your negative skepticism prior.

@@incognitocat555 Thanks for all of your comments and suggestions. I don't really have energy to continue to debate semantics. I watched the video again, and disagree that I am misleading anyone. I am not selling myself as a nutrition expert giving professional advice...I am just a person who bought Huel and is sharing my own personal thoughts on it on my channel. I also never "bashed" Huel for being unhealthy. If anything..I bashed Huel for tasting terrible, and I raised my skepticism about whether the supposed health benefits of drinking it were worth suffering though the terrible taste. I'm sorry if my clip showing amino acids was somehow "misleading." I can promise you the exact timing of which part of the website was showing during that part of the voiceover was purely coincidental.
I am just sharing my honest thoughts and opinions on Huel (and yes...my skepticism ...which I still have). Loved her honest review. I was interested in this brand until watching her reaction, and she seems trusting. Cute too 😊

One of the better reviews I've seen! Have to say, it sounds like it's really hard to get a real grasp on Huel without just trying it.

Yeah it's annoying that they don't have a sample size. I'm a very picky eater though and I thought their drinks/powders taste pretty good. The premade drinks are very smooth which is a huge plus over the powder drinks. The bars I thought were bad and the hot and savory mac and cheese wasn't for me but wasn't bad. I've given huel to a number of other people to try too since they were interested and no one said the powder/premade drink taste bad. They all thought it was either good or just fine. There are a lot of Huel fans and they aren't fans for no reason. They became fans because they like the product.

I don’t really care how it taste tbf it’s made my 100% more healthy and has helped me lose weight. Real change takes sacrifice. Moaning about how something tastes sounds weak

I was going to try it and saw the Lead warning ....it's a no no for me if it has heavy metals in there.

Yeah the bars are awful, but I Huel mixed with whole milk is nice and the Hot and Savoury is fine for work. It isn't claiming to be haute cuisine - it's decent, quick option if you're busy at work.

I don’t drink Huel just for taste or nutrition. I drink it because it’s much quicker to make and clean than anything I’ve used before. The taste by itself is pretty “meh”
Huel black mixed with some coffee is usually my breakfast, sometimes lunch is the Huel mixed with some PB or banana. Dinner is usually cooked or bought food for the taste & social aspect. Since I drink Huel black, it lets me be a bit more loose with the carbs/fat in other areas of my life. I also cook it into cookies or muffins which taste quite well (and again, it balances out the other ingredients)
