Huel Hot and Savoury: A Normal Person's Review

  • Probably the most requested video I've had about Huel - Huel's Hot and Svaoury meal replacement - I got three flavour of hot and savoury; Mexican Chilli, Sweet and Sour and Tomato and Herb. I wanted to try this as a meal replacement for lunches, rather than sweet huel shakes, and to see whether they did better than my own version of hot huel, which was unsuccessful.
I’ve had to remove the referral code due to Huel no longer honouring the discount, so I’m sorry to disappoint - I’m sure Huel will help if you reach out to them though. Again, apologies, and thank you for watching!

I’m on my 3rd order of Huel hot and savoury. I realised this morning how well I feel on it. I have 4 scoops a day- 800 calories. The plain flavours are better because you can add your own spices or herbs. The only one I couldn’t stand was the korma because it’s slightly sweet. The chicken and mushroom is my favourite flavour. I also find leaving it for 10 minutes with a cover over it makes it taste better.

I just ordered 4 bags so I hope I like them... lol. I'm a truck driver over the road and need something that is vegan, healthy, shelf stable, easy to make and eat, and doesn't taste awful. I like that you mentioned keeping a bag in your van, I will be road testing this myself. I will probably get good use of the little pot if it fits in my cup holder ( looks like it will). It's the first Huel product I've ordered. Thanks for the review!

@@kkkkkkkkkkaaaaaaable I received them today and my daughter and i tried the sweet and sour and coconut curry. They were tasty! I see myself adding steamed veggies and maybe a few sunflower seeds n stuff sometimes for texture and variety but I was impressed! And they are a real meal, I didn't feel like I needed anything else after finishing a serving. Easy to make, easy to store, easy to make just one serving ...this product checks off a lot of requirements for me as a driver living on the road trying to eat healthy.

I recommend adding some cooked rice in the mix after the 5 minutes, it’ll add extra calories for people who needs more carbs, and the rice actually absorb a lot of the flavor and fluid, makes it tastier in my opinion. I understand the whole point of using huel is for the convenience, but cooking like 8 cups of rice once a week and have them stored in the fridge really aren’t that difficult.

I love these, especially tomato and herb, which surprised me as it was the flavour I was least excited about, but it has a good kick of garlic which really makes the flavour sing. Also really like the Madras curry, nice and spicy. Third place for me would be sweet and sour, again a surprise as i don't usually like Chinese, never eat Chinese food. The other three all roughly tie, all very edible. Main thing to remember is to try to get a good balance of lumps and powder, so the flavour profile is balanced. Initially I wasn't shaking the bag, so sometimes they were bit bland, othertimes the flavour would be too much. For me, these are a life saver..

I'm about six bags in; I've had the mexican chili (twice), thai curry (twice), cajun pasta, and pasta bolognese. My take:
In general, I am a fan. It did take some getting used to; about 3 weeks into it I was kind of tired of eating it but later my body just sort of adjusted and now I actually look forward to the meals. I usually add some veggies as well as meat to mine, typically chicken breast, sardines, or ground beef. I also give it a bit of extra seasoning, usually chili powder, or garlic (no salt). The only one I didn't like was the cajun pasta; I'm not sure why but the consistency was just off every single time even though it is very similar to the pasta bolognese. I have dropped a few pounds; nothing spectacular but then again I'm not the most disciplined diet person so I consider it a win. I will continue to order it: I have the auto re-order programmed for every two months. It is a good value in my opinion.

I weighed it out and think you need more like 2.25 scoops. The pot although just a basic plastic pot is amazingly convenient just for having the fill line on it, easy to chuck this in your bag when you head out to the office. I tried my first H&S this week, and did find if I left it a tiny bit longer after the 5 minutes (lid off) it did naturally thicken up. Will try it with slightly less water next time

It's annoying that you can't buy a variety pack to try the different flavours. I'm wondering about adding precooked (2 min in micro type) rice, rice noodles or cooking spaghetti to put with it to solve the texture and psychological issue of not having much solid

I remember several years back thinking "I should try eating healthier" and trying to cook better (or just more rounded) meals. I also tried to get into the huel shakes at least twice and both times I just *could not* get over the texture of those cold powder shakes, and every single flavour I tried was just dreadful or bland at best. Not a great look for the brand
Last month I looked them up again and saw they have a load more products, so I got some mexican chili, katsu curry instant noodles, caffeinated cherry vitamin drinks, and I've enjoyed them all way more than that terrible mushy powder drink. Just glad they have some healthy products that actually taste good now.

Curious to see how long a single serving will last me with a 10 hour work day. Also going to try their daily greens to try and get more vegetables in my diet, though If i get into a better diet habit i can probably do away with that.

As a hiker, I've found that the hot and savoury are definitely cheaper (per meal) and tastier than wayfarer and summit. As a vegetarian, there is a much wider range with huel as well.
The only issue I have is that they're not even remotely calorie dense enough, just to match my output on a day hike, I'd need to eat 10 meals a day, rather than the 4 summit pouches. Of course, that just gives me an excuse to eat more Kendal mint cake, nuts and chocolate 😉

What I find ridicouless is the pricing outside the uk and usa, the euro prices after conversion are 11,32 Euro / 9,81 Pound more expensive. That's like a ~17 % markup for "reasons"?
