I totally agree with you about bands that can write an album from start to finish. Creating that journey is an art that not every band can compose and Jinjer fuckin' nails it!

    Is impossible not to see that you were always attracted by Jinjer, and if was not this album to make you a fan, i dont know what else was to be created/crafted for that to happen! 😅 🤣
    You are an expert "connoisseur" of music and this album, delivers everything that a metal music lover wants and in your case (and probably other "musical pros" like you) even more, because Jinjer are doing something amazingly different and complex with only 4 elements.
    Besides the different influences of other bands (obviously every band are influencied by others), is listenable that they are in a kind of "their own league", doing things that hardly we are expecting or already we heard before.
    If i'm permitted to give you an humble advice, before doing the "album overview", if i were you, i would check the lyrics of each song because, even you understand (and analyse) fully their music, the "feelings" associated to each song, to each note, might be lost and the lyrics in this album are incredibly deep and well written and that deserves (a lot!) credit as well.
    Again, congratulations and thank you very much for enlight us with your knowlege and for being the opposite of other "reaction makers".

    There were plenty of good opportunities for the use of a "juxtaposition" in there. You deprived us this time. This track is definitely becoming one of my favourites, as you say, it's uniquely Jinjer sounding

  • @metalgearshady7875
    @metalgearshady7875 3 роки тому +12

    The first song to be finished musically was Vortex I believe (also the first one to have lyrics/vocals and the video later) and I also know that Mediator was supposed to be a bonus track.
    Others have already proposed it, but again, it would be awesome if Jinjer could have some time to discuss the album with you, I bet you'd ask them a lot of stuff I'm really curious about and more than I haven't thought of.
    But that's difficult, on one hand it's like each listener's interpretation of the song, what they take for themselves, on the other hand the music here is quite interesting and some really important bits may be missed and like it's all analysis/speculations for classical composers unless some accounts are left about what they wanted to achieve etc, and it would kinda suck to lose an opportunity to know the authors' perspective for such albums :(

  • @metalgearshady7875

    Really interested in your opinion in terms of listening the entire album in one go, tbh to me it was kinda difficult the first tme, I felt like I started simply losing stuff, everything 'blurred' and I
    had to re-listen each song separately after that XD

  • @panossyle1710

    Its just an interpretation of mine ( and it might be far-fetched), but this album gives me the impression, that they tell us a story, about their musical journey up to this point in time. Anyway this is an album that i really love, and up to this day since the day of its release i listen to it every single day. Thank you so much John, for giving us your analysis on this album and i hope for more album analysis from other bands to.

    I think when you get to some of their older music, you'll have a hard time believing it's the same band. (To a degree, it's not the same band.) But their potential to become what they are now is unmistakable. Evolution.

      @@JWSoundworks2 Seriously, I'd love to see you have a discussion with Roman, Eugene and Vlad about the composition process of this album. They say Vlad wrote 80% of the music, I'm curious which songs are in that 80%. Especially that riffing in Dead Hands. I'm guessing that one is Roman. It's like Pit of Consciousness on steroids! So damn good. Your observation about Tati's vocal melodies over those beautiful riffs just added to my appreciation.

    I always listen "As I boil ice" and "Mediator" together. Emotional ending and mind blowing starting. Ideal conjunction. You'll understand my thought when you'll listen album without pausing. And so different repeating: "What is happiness? What is inner peace?". Painful calm vs angry confusion. Perfect!
    So... After last "Wallflowers" reaction, my ranking.
    Fav songs: "Call me a symbol", "As I boil ice", "Mediator", "Vortex", "Wallflower"
    Good songs: "Colossus", "Pearls and swine", "Sleep of the righteous"
    Not my cup of tea / I don't understand yet: "Disclosure!", "Copycat", "Dead hands feel no pain"
    Thanks for jnjr analysis!
    p.s. Jinjer surprise? Hmmm, I'm intrigued :)

    • @metalgearshady7875
      @metalgearshady7875 3 роки тому +2

      same for me about 'As I Boil Ice' and 'Mediator', maybe it's just the repeating lyrics, but even without that connection, finishing with an intense track like that sounds cool to me.
      And lyrically, 'As I Boil Ice' to me is like the basic, underlying emotion for almost all the songs on the album while 'Mediator' provides alsmost Alice Cooper-like theatrics (although obviously the songs are personal here) background of how it started and what's going on now and why. Like Alice Cooper had stuff clean up about Steven (or was it Stephen?) waking up and here it's like panning out and discussing how the real society, world disappoints naive children, forms people into what they are amidst all of this.
      Also I really liked how they picked Pearls And Swine snippet for Wallflower video credits, well, maybe the music is just nice for the credits, but linking Pearls And Swine topic to becoming a Wallflower person is neat.

  • @oldscratch3535
    @oldscratch3535 3 роки тому +15

    This is my favorite song on the album. The riff that you said resembled Mudvayne is probably my favorite riff on the entire album. That shit is so nasty and Tatiana's delivery of the lyrics is so groovy. She matches the dissonant chord at the end of the riff to give emphasis to the word "ice".
    The transition after that riff into the slower parts is the part that sounded like Gojira to me. Specifically, the 3 descending notes that end the phrase. Don't know why. It just sounds like something they would do.
    I really love Jinjer but my only complaint would be that they're not a band that you can introduce to just anyone. The average person is not going to understand this or even see any talent in it. You almost have to have a working knowledge of music theory to really appreciate it or just be naturally good at feeling the groove and hearing nuance in the music.
    Then there are the people who get hung up on the growling/screaming. They'll say "I can't understand what they're saying". If that was a valid reason to dislike this genre then they should also dislike all music b/c they can't read sheet music or they don't know the specific notes an instrument is playing. I try to treat the vocals as another instrument instead of just a way to deliver lyrics.

    • @hemlock399

      I have a hard time deciding whether this song or one of the 3 singles is my favourite. Those 4 songs are my top tier. Next tier includes Dead Hands, Pearls & Swine, Disclosure.
      I didn't like extreme vocals until I happened across the wonderful world of Pisces reactions just over a year ago. I don't know that I ever would have liked extreme vocals but for that happy accident, nor do I know that any song on this album could have serve as a point of entry into Jinjer world the way that Pisces did, not because this album isn't as good - on the contrary, it's fantastic - but because nothing on this album is as accessible to the uninitiated. Lucky for me, I did find my way here, & I do believe that Jinjer is now my favourite band!
      Cheers!

    Can't pick single favorite track from the album, almost in every case it's the one I'm listening to :( But I can see how this was supposed to be the title track for the album, imho conveys the main mood throughout the album (and each other song , except Colossus may, but I must be paying too much attention to the lyrics in my perception of things, kinda branches off to different emotions, but stemming from the same melancholy)

    Thank you for such an insightful album review, it's much appreciated how you point out the musically interesting features & do it with such joy. Please keep up with some more Jinjer reactions down the line, they have a great back catalogue & they've evolved their sound so much since the beginning. Macro album has some corkers & all but 1 has an official music video too so I'd go there next, being the closest to Wallflowers in time/style.
    Also, I've thoroughly loved an album review. There are some great albums out there but could I request you consider a Gojira album. Fans will argue which is better (another band who have evolved) but my personal favourite is From Mars To Sirius, which is a concept album about Earth & how humans are treating it (they're environmentalists). It contains the best consecutive 3 songs on any album I've heard (Where Dragons Dwell - Heaviest Matter of the Universe - Flying Dragons), has elite drumming & riffs and I love their emotional album closer. Just a recommendation.
    Love your work, keep it up.

    As I Boil Ice was going to be last song on the album. Its coda has long sustained notes. Left me waiting for the old school fade out. Also, could have been the album title. Mediator was going to be a bonus track, but was tacked on the end. Probably for marketing, Wallflowers makes a listener attracted to the ballad of the album. Great job catching time changes and haunting chords.

    The album was originally going to be called As I Boil Ice and this was to be the title track. it got changed later. I think they were mulling over calling it Introvert but Tatiana thought that was too generic and straightforward so "someone" (they didn't say who) suggested Wallflower and they went with that instead. This was potentially before naming the song Wallflower too. I can't remember from the interview I read.
