NFL Films was in its golden age during the 80s and 90s with Facenda and Kalas narrating. The NFL Network has RUINED NFL Films by only making Stupid "Top 100" Countdowns and "A Football Life" Talkumentaries. No more Team Yearbooks, NFL Game of the Weeks, and the Super Bowl Recaps are garbage now with hardly any narration, bland scoring, and ZERO wit or charm in presenting nuggets of interest about the teams and players. I almost couldn't stay awake with the God Awful recap of the Chiefs/ Niners Superbowl LIV. BORING!
I'm not a fan of either the 49ers or Bengals. But out of all the Super Bowl highlight films that I've seen, this is really my favorite. It sets the scene perfectly with the shots of people braving the Arctic temperature to get to the game. It also might be the last Super Bowl highlight film that was narrated by the great John Facenda. He died in 1984. This is pretty much a perfect highlight film and I advise everyone to enjoy it before the UA-cam police or somebody else has it removed.

The 1981 49ers may be one of the most overlooked Super Bowl champions in Super Bowl history. One thing I just saw was that the 49ers beat all three of their post-season opponents twice, once in the regular season and once in the post-season. Not only did they crush the Cowboys when they met during the season, but late in the season, they beat the Giants and Bengals in back-to-back games, and only the Giants really threatened them. They beat the Cowboys (45-14) and Bengals (21-3), the teams they beat in the NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl XVI, respectively, by a combined score of 66-17 in the regular season.
As a Giants fan, I admit the 49ers ran the 1980's! They deserve more rings than they won. Had 1987 been a full season they would've won and if they kept Montana instead of Young, they would've beaten some of those early 90's Bills teams for SuperBowls too.
I'm not sure about that regarding the '87 49ers, because they were the NFL's best team, but ran into Anthony Carter and the Vikings in the playoffs in their 36-24 loss, so that may very well have happened anyway. Carter torched the 49ers' secondary for over 230 yards in that game. And by the way, the 49ers made the right decision to trade Montana and keep Steve Young, because that bought them an extra five or six years at the top. Montana might have beaten the Cowboys in '92, but there's no way he would have beaten them in '93, by which time, the 49ers might have been a team without a quality QB had they let Young go, instead of Montana.

Fascenda & the music is what drew me in. The SB highlights were always my favorite NFL Films videos. The ones from 1977-86 were all great, grew up on those.
I completely agree. The music and narration of this film is SO dramatic! I also enjoy the musi and narration of SB's V and IX. I attended this Super Bowl and sat in the end zone seats where that damned goal line stand occurred. I also attended the Bengals Super Bowl in Miami. Bittersweet. Still glad I got to attend the events. They were big time, world wide amazing spectacles!

This was the first of 3 consecutive Super Bowls that featured a crucial 4th and 1. All 3 times, the team that won the 4th and 1 (stops in SB 16 and 18, a TD in SB 17) went on to win the game.
This game felt more like Cincinnati losing it than San Francisco winning it since the Bengals victimized themselves time after time with their own mistakes. In SB XXIII, the 49ers simply rose up late in the 4th quarter to win it with that long drive.
+Thomas Norman I don't think the goal line stand was a big deal. The 49ers still had to punt and the Bengals scored a touchdown on the next drive. The real game killer was the 49ers field goal drive after that. That put the Bengals in a situation where they had to score twice late in the game. So they were forced to pass and the 49ers defense was ready for it.
During the intro, a radio host was giving a weather report. There’s something about old radio that I just love to hear. Has a different sound quality to it.
It's funny they call it the "Detroit Silverdome." It was actually the Pontiac Silverdome, and as such, the game was played in Pontiac, Michigan, 31 miles up I-75 from Detroit.
It's just like or even worse how they call the Jets & Giants NY when they play in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Or they used to call the Arizona Cardinals "Phoenix" when they played in Tempe, Azr. I think its a case of calling a team by the biggest city closest to that team, not technically where they officially call home.
The Bengals had the ball for three consecutive plays just one yard shy (or less) of the goal line. Why they didn't try a quarterback sneak even once is beyond me.

This game was there for the Bengals to take. A shame they didn't win it, because if they had, those great Bengals teams of the late 70s and early 80s would get the credit they deserve. And players like Kenny Anderson and Ken Riley would be in the Hall of Fame where they belong. As a Bengals fan, this just breaks my heart to watch. The Bengals had so many chances to take control of this game, but they just kept losing the ball. I have no doubt that Ken Anderson would be in the Hall of Fame today if Cincinnati had won this game. It's still absurd that he's not in, while someone like Dan Fouts (who threw 252 interceptions and never even played in a Super Bowl) is. Also, it's absurd that Dan Ross didn't win the MVP of this game. Even though his team lost, he clearly deserved the award: 11 receptions for 104 yards and two touchdowns. To this day his 104 yards is a receiving record for a tight end in a Super Bowl (thought it was tied by Vernon Davis)

Plunkett led the Raiders to victory in some great games, but I don't think he's hall of fame material. His td-int ration is pathetic: 164 touchdown passes vs 198 interceptions. Even for his time that's pretty bad. Also he only threw for 25,882 yards. In a 16-year career, that averages out to about 1,600 yards per season. No way you're getting into the hall of fame with that. Plunkett had a very inconsistent career overall. There were just few key seasons where he rose to the top and led the Raiders to glory.

I was only 6 when this game was played but, I remember this game so clearly. Joe Montana scored the 49ers first TD on a 1-yard sneak. I also remember the 49ers goal line stand late in the 3rd quarter. Also remember this because of the late, great John Facenda. A truly amazing voice.

I felt every bit of that wind walking to the Silverdome in the parking lot. CCCCOOOLDD! And I sat through the Freezer Bowl 2 weeks before that in Cincinnati. -59 degrees below wind chill.-9 degrees temperature. Still the coldest game in NFL history by wind chill.

During the 3rd quarter goal line stand segment John Facenda claimed that David Verser was supposed to have blocked Craig Puki when Kenny Anderson called the blocking audible. According to the Sports Illustrated article on Super Bowl XVI, Verser was supposed to have blocked Jack Reynolds, not Craig Puki.

John Facenda, in mentioning the "team that scored first wins the game", may have referred to the Dallas Cowboys scoring first in Super Bowl V, and again in Super Bowl X (and at the same stadium!), but would lose both of those games--in the fourth quarter each time! (In Super Bowl 5, Dallas was ahead of Baltimore in the fourth period 13-6 but lost 16-13. And in Super Bowl 10, against Terry Bradshaw's Pittsburgh Steelers, they led 10-7, and ended up losing 21-17.
Very strange game. The Bengals outgained the 49ers substantially; yet were behind 20-0 at one point. They were getting blown out - but not really. If only they had kicked a FG on 4th down at the one yard line, it could have been 20-10 with the whole 4th quarter to go. Four turnovers were the killer; or the Bengals could have blown out the 49ers badly. Again, very strange game.

Yes he was talking about a play where if Collinsworth positioned on the outside he would cut off the route & go into the middle of the field by doing that he was allowing a Linebacker to suddenly cover him cause that's where Linebackers tend to be. By Anderson saying break it he's saying keep running up the field don't let yourself get covered by a 2nd defender.
Anderson is the other Kenny long kept out of the Hall undeservingly. I wonder what lobbying advantage Stabler had which Anderson doesn't, other than a SB ring. Stabler only had 5 great years, from 1973 to 1977. Anderson had at least that many.

It's funny they call it the "Detroit Silverdome." It was actually the Pontiac Silverdome, and as such, the game was played in Pontiac, Michigan, 31 miles up I-75 from Detroit.
It's just like or even worse how they call the Jets & Giants NY when they play in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Or they used to call the Arizona Cardinals "Phoenix" when they played in Tempe, Azr. I think its a case of calling a team by the biggest city closest to that team, not technically where they officially call home.

This game was there for the Bengals to take. A shame they didn't win it, because if they had, those great Bengals teams of the late 70s and early 80s would get the credit they deserve. And players like Kenny Anderson and Ken Riley would be in the Hall of Fame where they belong. Several of the key 49ers defensive players of the early 80s (Eric Wright, Dwight Hicks, Keena Turner, etc) get totally forgotten. San Francisco's defense becoming outstanding in 1981 was the key to the team's turnaround in the early 80s...which of course led to their championships throughout the decade

As a Bengals fan, this just breaks my heart to watch. The Bengals had so many chances to take control of this game, but they just kept losing the ball.
I have no doubt that Ken Anderson would be in the Hall of Fame today if Cincinnati had won this game. It's still absurd that he's not in, while someone like Dan Fouts (who threw 252 interceptions and never even played in a Super Bowl) is.
Also, it's absurd that Dan Ross didn't win the MVP of this game. Even though his team lost, he clearly deserved the award: 11 receptions for 104 yards and two touchdowns. To this day his 104 yards is a receiving record for a tight end in a Super Bowl (thought it was tied by Vernon Davis)
TheStapleGunKid They had a golden opportunity to take the first lead of the game after they recovered the ball on the kickoff return. But Anderson threw the interception. That goal line stand was the real killer though.
That wasn't the only thing. Collinsworth's killer fumble took points off the board as well. The whole game was one of blown chances
+TheStapleGun Neither is Jim Plunkett and he WON 2 Super Bowls for the Raiders. Not only that but, Jim Plunkett is the last Raiders QB to win a Super Bowl. He's also the only QB who has WON 2 or more Super Bowls who ISN'T IN THE HALL OF FAME...
Plunkett led the Raiders to victory in some great games, but I don't think he's hall of fame material. His td-int ration is pathetic: 164 touchdown passes vs 198 interceptions. Even for his time that's pretty bad. Also he only threw for 25,882 yards. In a 16-year career, that averages out to about 1,600 yards per season. No way you're getting into the hall of fame with that.
Plunkett had a very inconsistent career overall. There were just few key seasons where he rose to the top and led the Raiders to glory.
+TheStapleGunKid hey the Bengals are doing great now, so maybe 2015 will be their year. I agree with you on Anderson, he certainly belongs in the HOF. Fouts had some good moments but as you say, too many interceptions, plus he was injury plagued.

I was only 6 when this game was played but, I remember this game so clearly. Joe Montana scored the 49ers first TD on a 1-yard sneak. I also remember the 49ers goal line stand late in the 3rd quarter. Also remember this because of the late, great John Facenda. A truly amazing voice.

Dan Bunz made a great tackle but. Ken Anderson threw the ball where Charles Alexander had to turn for the ball. Had Anderson threw the ball ahead of Charles then it's a touchdown.

This puts SB 16 In a new light....As say, "The Curse of Bill Walsh"....In the game, The 49ers were able to pick up points off mistakes by the Bengals, The Interception early in the 1st half, Then the kickoff return fumble at the end of the 1st half.
These and other mistakes by the Bengals were a reflection of bad coaching, The 49ers play In SB 16 was a reflection of the great coaching of Bill Walsh....In the end, Walsh was able to get "Revenge", Not just In SB 16 against the Bengals, But again In SB 23 against the same Bengals....
Not scoring after the fumble on the opening kickoff just killed Cincy. I knew it was not going to be the Bengals day.

I felt every bit of that wind walking to the Silverdome in the parking lot. CCCCOOOLDD! And I sat through the Freezer Bowl 2 weeks before that in Cincinnati. -59 degrees below wind chill.-9 degrees temperature. Still the coldest game in NFL history by wind chill.

According to the Sports Illustrated article on Super Bowl XVI, Verser was supposed to have blocked Jack Reynolds, not Craig Puki.

John Facenda, in mentioning the "team that scored first wins the game", may have referred to the Dallas Cowboys scoring first in Super Bowl V, and again in Super Bowl X (and at the same stadium!), but would lose both of those games--in the fourth quarter each time! (In Super Bowl 5, Dallas was ahead of Baltimore in the fourth period 13-6 but lost 16-13. And in Super Bowl 10, against Terry Bradshaw's Pittsburgh Steelers, they led 10-7, and ended up losing 21-17.
I love the statement NFL films makes at the open - don't play the Super Bowl in cold weather cities.

Very strange game. The Bengals outgained the 49ers substantially; yet were behind 20-0 at one point. They were getting blown out - but not really. If only they had kicked a FG on 4th down at the one yard line, it could have been 20-10 with the whole 4th quarter to go. Four turnovers were the killer; or the Bengals could have blown out the 49ers badly. Again, very strange game.

When Kenny Anderson was talking to Cris Collinsworth on the sideline at 11:54, did anybody understand what the hell he was talking about? I sure as hell didn't.
Yes he was talking about a play where if Collinsworth positioned on the outside he would cut off the route & go into the middle of the field by doing that he was allowing a Linebacker to suddenly cover him cause that's where Linebackers tend to be. By Anderson saying break it he's saying keep running up the field don't let yourself get covered by a 2nd defender.
