My dad was a Niner fan from the West Coast who raised my brother and I in Upstate NY (Buffalo). I was a Jets fan which didn't bother my dad but he never forgave my big brother for becoming a Giants fan! I don't think he spoke to my brother for two days after that playoff game in 1986 lol My dad and brother are gone now but I have such warm memories of those games and how they brought out so much passion in our family. You're right, looking back that was a really wonderful era of sports and such a great rivalry! I remember the year the Giants won their second SB in 1990, they played the Niners twice, once on Monday night and then in the playoffs. The Giants were so gritty and well-coached and that Niner defense was historically underrated...they didn't give up one touchdown in either game against the eventual champs.
Have to feel for Sam Wyche at the end "34 seconds away from it" uggh, so tough to swallow. He was all class with Walsh afterwards, "I am...so happy for you".
Sam owned this entire highlight video. Great motivator and offensive innovator w Bruce Coslet (QB Coach & offensive assistant). And like you said good loser, this was as tough a loss as they come, especially for a Super Bowl.
When Rice caught that pass over the middle and took it to the 20 yard line with 59 seconds left, that was one of the best sports calls by the announcer ever.
I was 8 and my parents had a SB party that year. We were convinced that the 49ers had lost by the end of the 3rd quarter and some of the guests wanted to turn the game off because they didn't want to see them lose. Watching that drive in real time was so nerve racking I still remember it. They kept slowly making one 1st down after another, chipping away at it an when they finally made that TD with 34 seconds left it seemed miraculous! Most exciting SB I ever saw!
I was 8 as well and was rooting for the Bengals . My old man came home after the game with a huge tv he won from the super bowl party and I asked why he didn't root for the Bengals? And he said he knew frisco was better and I was a Montana fan from there on out .
The greatest single drive in NFL history...Everybody in america thought Joe Montana to Jerry Rice and he hit John Taylor for a World Championship...One series for the Super Bowl and Joe Cool proved his all time greatness.. Terrific Game!!!
The Cincinatti Bengals were the only AFC team to seriously challenge the powerful 49ers 80s juggernaut/dynasty. The 49ers earned both wins over the Bengals. That just goes to show how good Cincinatti's 2 SB teams actually were. I think that they will beat the L.A. Rams and win their first SB on February 13th.
Out of all the Super Bowls, I have to say that this one is the best. It wasn't the closest (Super Bowl 25) but in this we got to see the GOAT lead his team down the length of the field in crunch time. Most QBs would be uptight in that situation but not Joe and I'm certain no other QB would point out John Candy in the audience in a situation like that. He wasn't known as Joe Cool for nothing.
Maybe so. But he seemed to ignore his high-rated veteran quarterback's skills and accomplishments in favor of going with promising young players like Turk and Boomer (whose stats in the Bengals' 2nd Superbowl were among the lowest in SB history). Anderson had replaced Wyche on the Bengal roster in 1971, and Sam would remain active as a player (barely) until age 31. Anderson would have been 35 during Sam's first year as coach. Possibly too old to remain at the top of his game--but the Bengals only winning QB (to this day) with a strong and accurate arm. And try telling Favre, Rodgers, Brady, Brees, Moon, etc. that they're too old to start. But the biggest controversy was Walsh's benching Montana in favor of Young. Rather than accept the demotion, Joe went out as a K.C. Chief, with the assurance he would start every game until he chose to retire.
When the 49ers called timeout with 39 seconds left, the last thing Bill Walsh told Montana before they broke the huddle on the sideline was "Don't throw into double coverage." Montana proceeds to throw into double coverage, split it with a perfect pass, and win the game.
This was the 🏆Super Bowl🏈 Game That Had brought The Bill Walsh Era (1979➖1988) to it’s end And Had Brought Forth The George Seifert Era (1989➖1996) Into The Making !!!! 😉😉😉😉🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈
Great game, Wyche was all class. He was on 49ers staff in SB XVI. I'm pulling for the Bengals to finally get a championship, they've been close, feel bad that my 49ers had to beat them 2x. Both those Bengal teams would have beat every other team in the NFL, but not the HOF 49er teams they ran into. Ken Anderson was one of the all time greats. Pulling for the Bengals to finally get their Super Bowl..
Kind of odd, the Bengals of all teams were the only ones to give Montana's 49ers a scare. Anderson's Bengals did a good job but Esiason's Bengals almost pulled off the upset. In Super Bowl XIX, everyone was going on and on about Marino but in the end, the Dolphins couldn't pull it off and when Montana faced off against Elway, that was a true masterpiece performance by Montana. Had he not came out in the 4th and had Seifert not called off the dogs, I'm betting San Fran could have put up over 70 on Denver......there was no team that could have defeated that 49ers team that day, no one.
Not just a great game, but, maybe the best Super Bowl of the 1980s. The 80s were filled with too many one-sided Super Bowl victories. This one changed the script and it is one of the greatest Super Bowls ever played, neither team really gave the other too much of an advantage, so a 20-16 final score is as close to an entertaining game as one could hope for.
I watched this game with my grandma who was a HUGE Niner fan, I was 11 years old and still remember her screaming for her team 😂 no wonder I'm a Niner fan myself now! GO NINERS!!!
"Hey, isn't that John Candy over there?," said Joe Montana in the huddle at their own 8-yard line. The guys cracked up and knew right then and there that they couldn't be stopped.
Most people didn't know that Esiason was playing injured in that game. That might have been why he was so terrible that night. He was also the 1988 NFL MVP.
I always get a kick out of how most people talk about John Elway's Offensive series over the Browns in the 1986 AFC Championship game as "The Drive"....no folks...watch the GOAT Joe Montana from 16:58 on....now THAT was "The Drive"
The "prevent" defense is designed to allow for easy completions underneath, which is why the Bengals should not have switched to it with over three minutes still left in the game. But they did, and that cost them the game.
what cost them the game was what the announcer said after 49rs scored that 1st td after that dropped int. Bengals made the 1st of repeated mistakes- giving Montana another chance. 92 yrds, 3+ mins, all timeouts remaining- yeah gave joe another chance
Trey Blake No way. What cost them the game was Joe Montana taking the huddle and recognizing, "Hey, isn't that John Candy over there?" Guys in the huddle heard that and knew everything was going to turn out their way.

Bengals lost 3 SBowls but, they competed to the end. Never a blow out. To this day, this one is known as The Most Competitive Super Bowl in SB History.
I think the script for this video underestimates what the Cincinnati Bengals were about in 1988: 12-4 record, homefield advantage through the AFC, two wins better than their opponent. "Invited guests"? "Decided underdog"? Okay, they didn't have the pedigree of the 49ers, but they were the better team during the season, and, although outplayed in some areas of this game, came close to winning.
Tim Krumrie was a victim of the GREATEST INJURY IN SUPER BOWL HISTORY! Four years later, he would commit one of the greatest injury in NFL history, by injuring Don Majkowsi, to create the legend of Brett Favre!
Because of things like 13:30 I believe in the football gods. "But at the Bengals 10-yard line Montana threw what could have been his costliest pass of the game". Nowadays we see Montana as a guy whose TD/Int ratio in Super Bowls is 11/0 and who was flawless in big games. Other examples of "how could that possibly happen?" were David Tyree's helmet catch in Super Bowl XLII and Robert Alford's dropped interception turned into Julian Edelman's unlikely catch in Super Bowl LI.
Wasn't it interesting how intense Sam Wyche was throughout most of the game, but how subdued he was during the 49ers' final game-winning drive? It was almost as if he sensed Joe Montana was not going to be stopped.
@@user-co1gi7yd2r your job is too still protect the ball. All he did was fumble. Montanas line failed to execute on leonard marshall in 1990 nfc championship and it cost montana his career and a chance at 3 straight sb wins .A hit that would get you ejected now.
Like most Bengal fans, I was very disappointed when this game ended. To make matters worse, Cincinnati could have HAD Jerry Rice with the 13th pick in the 1985 NFL Draft. However, the Bengals decided to take receiver Eddie Brown with this pick while San Francisco took Jerry Rice just three picks later. I am sure that Cincinnati would have won this Super Bowl if Rice had been playing for the Bengals!
Hats off to the great 49ers greatest team ever but oh if only the Bengals they were so close 34 seconds! At least the Reds won the World Series the next year

49ERS 4 LIFE!
At least the Reds won the World Series the next year
Heartbreaker.
I'm calling it now! Rematch THIS YEAR! I CAN TASTE 49ER BLOOD IN MY MOUTH! 😈

will Drucker you are damn right
85 bears or the team of the decade. What you choose.
49ers. The 85 bears were great, but that was lightning in a bottle. Mike Ditka was a vastly overrated coach and an asshole
Could we see a third Bengals-49ers match up in two weeks? Joe Burrow vs. Brock Purdy, anyone?
10:33 This guy went to my high school, as did AJ Green.
10:49 Sam Wyche 💕
If the niners and bens meet on Feb 13 2022 the 80s are back
Just imagine we had today’s graphics for this game
I thought when Sam went to Tampa Bay Buccaneers to become head coach he would turn them into Cincinnati Bengals but it didn't work out their way at all he didn't have the grit athletic ability at quarterback
Down 3 late in the game. Joe said to the huddle way hi to john candy. Epic
One catch for 10 yards did it!
3:35 You know Tim Krumrie's broken leg is awful because they won't show it
