I don't know, yesterday's superbowl was a much better game along with brady's past superbowls, (like all of them) You're just looking at the big name boys of old. Great quaterbacks but just 4 rings between the two of them.

Joe Montana set the record for rushing yards by a QB in the Super Bowl, which stood for a long time. It is still 3rd all time. Miami was in man coverage and Joe found room to roam and make thing happen. People think of Young's mobility and forget that Joe had wheels.

One thing I like to point out to those who don't think Montana is the GOAT and he had Jerry Rice. Well I hadn't heard them call Rice name once. Why? because Rice wasn't on the 49ers. Montana had two Superbowls before Rice came. Montana was Montana before Rice ever played in the NFL.
As a Miami fan, I remembered how much this sucked. But what was even worse was Shula trying to blame Roby and the punting game for being a big reason in this loss. It's true Roby didn't have a great game, but he also didn't give up 537 yards of offense.
and up to this game, Roby was knocking the ball into the atmosphere. It wasn’t the Dolphins day. I remember watching it live and thinking Dan will be back.

I remember watching this the year after the Raiders beat the Skins. The problem the Dolphins had here was they couldn’t stop the Niners offense. The Niners initially struggled stopping Miami’s offense, but they kept wearing down that O-line. Since Marino pretty much had to throw it in the second half, Niners could focus on pass rushing and aggressive coverage, which resulted in sacks and turnovers. Miami had the best offense in the AFC, but San Francisco had just as good an offense and a much stronger defense. Great game though. I loved 80s football 🏈
Basically the 49ers were just a more balanced team. All the commentators said the 49ers were going to win. It was so lopsided among the commentators that Tom Landry just seconds before the game started changed his mind and said ok I'm going for the Dolphins. I think he new better though. Dolphins using that no-huddle offense took advantage of the 3-4 defense the Niners had slow linebackers Reynolds and Bunz. They changed to Dime defense with 6 defensive backs. Dolphins tried to run on that defense but the 4 defensive linemen stuff the run each time. They couldn't run if they even wanted to, and aside from having to pass to catch up. The Dolphins didn't have a chance really. Plus, all the 49er's starting Defensive backs were all pro bowlers that year (Lott, Wright, Williamson and Hicks).
@Armis71 great assessment. That was one of the first Super bowls I watched as a youth and remember very well while living in Miami. My whole family are Dolphins fans, and I'm the only one that's not(Washington fan). I told my family that the 49ers were too good but they disagreed.

Heard it All seen it All and still a die hard fan today with the original Dolphin 🐬 symbol tattooed on my lower left leg in color!!! PhinS UP 💯🐬💙🏈
This has a so much a similarity to the upcoming Super Bowl. The team with the defense and the non talked about offense is the 49ers just like in this game. And the hyped offense going into the game are the chiefs and their comparison being the Dolphins because of how hot their QB’s were and no one payed attention to their opponents offense.
MCCHESNEY22222 all the media is talking about is whether the defense can stop the Chiefs offense. When clearly the mismatch is Chiefs defense doesn’t match well against San Francisco
That Dolphins offense was insanely good, and that Niner defense shut them down. 4 pro bowlers in the secondary. One of the best ever. Joe cool was money, and Roger Craig was smooth of out the backfield. Best 49er team ever.
People forget that Montana won two rings before Rice came to town. Everyone tries to downplay Montana by saying he had Rice all along 😂. Joe cool was clutch when it mattered the most with or without hall of fame receivers.
Not sure if you caught it when doing the cut-ups for this, but there is a shot of Teri Hatcher as a 49ers cheerleader during the broadcast. She was a sugar fox back then.
IMO they're one of if not the greatest overall team in history. First team to win 15 games in the regular season, and 18 games total while winning the Super Bowl. They were the definition of a complete team.
I wish you had shown the pregame where everybody was telling us how Dan Marino was going to dominate. This was the 48 TD season and all the experts had Miami winning big. Joe and the 49ers were just that soft west coast team in a weak division who won the super bowl 3 years ago and were just lucky. This was the new era. Dan Marino was also the least sacked QB in the NFL and had the fewest knockdowns, but in this game he was sacjed 5 times and knocked down 10+ times.

I bet you never knew who Jimmy the Greek was, but he was HUGE for sports gambling and lines and odds and he had Miami up big too. Miami was 14-2 and had a record setting offense that took 20 or so years to break and rules changes to help offenses. You are looking back in hind sight and trying to rewrite history, but you can't. @@maximilianomunoz9718 - I agree with you. Keep in mind though that when we talk about history... this was one of those bench mark games people point to. It was only super bowl 19. Everybody playing in it were older than the super bowl itself, where this year we have people who were in dipers during 9/11. It was a very different time.
This, and Super Bowl 14 in LA, are the only Super Bowls that have been hosted by a participating team. However this game was held at the massive Stanford Stadium as opposed to the oddly-shaped multi-purpose Candlestick Park. Likewise the LA Rams played in Super Bowl 14 but it was played at the Rose Bowl not the Colisuem or the Big A.

This game could be symbolic of what was to come for Miami for the rest of their years with Marino. A defense begins to figure out the Miami offense and their over dependence on Marino, which leads to pressure on Marino and eventual ineffectiveness and interceptions.
Coach Bill Walsh is the greatest coach of all time.. these 49ers never loss a Super Bowl with him as Head Coach... Of the greatest offensive minded coaches in the NFL.. they had a really good running game Roger Craig was so dominant and Dwight Clark was a beast
Because he was a turtle 🐢 even at 23yo he was a turtle, very shamefull that a sport man looks like a turtle since young age, what he did in the summers? oh yeah nothing, only eating at Mcdonald's
@@sodica81 he actually wasn't until he had a couple of knee injuries that slowed him down. His first few seasons he could actually move around in the pocket pretty well and even after that he rarely took a sack. The real culprit was the total lack of running game and the very subpar defense. It's shocking how bad Miami was on the defensive side of the ball when you consider Shula built his early reputation on tough defenses and a great ground game.
Ironic that it would be Denver that had been such a punching bag in the early part of that period that would be the team that finally snapped that losing streak.
This one was a true heartbreaker for me as Miami was my second favorite team in the league and my favorite AFC team. It didn't help that I lost a $5 bet to my uncle on this game. I never bet on a football game again after that. It was also the end of an era and I didn't even know it. Don Shula would never coach in a Super Bowl again nor would Marino play in one. They would get back to the AFC Championship the next season but after blowing a home win against a very ho hum Patriot team it was pretty well downhill from there. The rest of the decade was pretty painful as both of my favorites would not do well while the Niners, Bears, Giants and Redskins would DOMINATE the league until 92 and I loathed all of them. This game truly marked the rise of the 49ers as a dynasty. The first Super Bowl victory was against a very average Cincinnati team and a lot of the pieces hadn't arrived in SF yet. But with this win the Niners proved the first one was no fluke and neither was Joe Montana. Within a year or so they would add Rice and they went from good to DOMINATE. Everybody put all the hype on Miami for this game. Marino had torched the league that year and set season records that would last for well over two decades. The Niners came into the game with almost the same record as Miami but they did it in a quieter fashion. The big question was all about whether they could stop Marino when it should have been how was Miami's defense going to stop the Niners.
I don’t see why teams don’t run the 2 running backs behind the qb on each side of his back side anymore… Helps with protection, opening up routes and gives the qb different options…
The following year was his chance but him and his team blew it against a lucky mediocre team in the AFC championship. Had the Dolphins won they would’ve faced the Bears whom they had already proved they could beat in the regular season.
@@boxingdialogue4676 the patriots offense was mediocre but their defense was great that year and Miami's defense was terrible. They just had a great offense because of the greatness of #13. The pats ran the ball 60 times for 255 yards! That's just ridiculous, so pats had the ball for almost 45 minutes while dolphins had possession for less than 20 minutes. Still think they wouldve beat the bears in the super bowl, they match up much better to than than the pats that year
Because Marino was a turtle that was sad to see, seeing those movements scare me and fill me with insecurity, he never got in shape, he never deserved to win a SuperBowl, enough excuses and blaming Shula or the team, he I spent all summer eating at McDonald's, he was 24yo and my 75-year-old grandmother moved faster, what a difference of QBs, seeing Montana and the turtle Marino 🐢🐢🐢
This 1984 team was arguably the greatest 49er team ever assembled and after that bullshit holding call the ref gave to Ronnie Lott in the NFC Championship the previous season, he was so pissed "he played like a man possessed" according to owner Eddie Debartolo. They went 15-1, but the story of that Superbowl was pushed by the media's hype of MVP Dan Marino, while conversely, treating Montana as an afterthought. Really reminds me of the Patrick Mahomes vs Jimmy G dynamic the media is hyping right now. Hopefully, history will repeat itself this Sunday.

This is like the forgotten Super Bowl for 49ers. I was a few years away from being alive for this one. Always see the clips of the two Bengals Super Bowls and the blowout vs the Broncos. This one for some reason is forgotten by 49ers fans.
Many think the difference in this game was the SF running game, specifically Roger Craig being unstoppable. But Joe Montana was a beast and had too many weapons for the Miami defense to handle. Total SF domination that day.
I love the 49ers so much with Joe Montana, but I actually wish Miami Dolphins won the 1985 Super Bowl. This Super Bowl was legendary with Joe Montana vs Dan Marino
Miami's defensive coordinator was Chuck Shirley though this entire season. The prior year he was Niners DC. Walsh and the Niners, especially Dwight Hicks and his Hot Licks beat the fish like a rented mule all afternoon.
I know people get down on him because he never won a SB, but I think Dan Marino, along with Terry Bradshaw, had the strongest throwing arms in NFL history.
I hate these old games that don't display the score, the time and the down. You don't know until someone scores. The broadcasts have really improved over the years.
I lived in Bay Area during this time. Actually i was born and raised there. All week long all I heard on radio and TV was " Marino this...Marino that"... " How are the Niners going to stop Miami's prolific offense?. One poor sap on the radio claimed Marino would make the 49ers defense look " average" . Well its nice when pukes choke on thier own vomit. The game was over at halftime. The second half was a coronation of Joe and Bill and a wonderful 15-1 football team.🙂
This Super Bowl rythmes a lot with Super Bowl 48. The 49ers frustrated Marino much like the Seahawks did Manning. A good defense overwhelms a historically great offense in both cases.
9:00 I wish we'd see more POV's like that it gives you better sense of what the players see and how they aren't as bunched up as it looks from a side POV and was this the coldest SB ever played? you see see their breath. And to think it's in CA. I know it can get cold there but didn't expect that. I don't think Marino ran out of the pocket too much in his career like he had to do a few times here.
Just like the Redskins in the Superbiwl against Miami a couple years earlier Miami's defense was totally impotent against the run. This allowed Theisman and Montana lots of play action and throwing time.
That's funny. Around 3:50 one announcer says miami's offense will be the one of the 90's if rules aren't changed. I'll bet he never even pondered that rule changes would be made to make EVERY offense high-flying
Lastima que Marino no haya sido.campeón uno de los.mas grandes QB de toda la historia, los 49ers un equipo muy completo gran defensa y ataque además tenía a Walsh.
Dolphins won their SB's with great defenses. Marino's Dolphin teams were historically all about the offense with less and less emphasis on rebuilding a championship defense. It's a shame he never got another chance to win one.
The Miami linebackers couldn't cover Roger Craig and Joe Montanta scrambling. The 49er defense dared Miami to run and even played a base dime defense and their running game was crap so they couldn't take advantage of it.
This game is my earliest memory "Hey mom, what's a 49er?" "...oh, in 1849 a bunch of people went to California to mine gold, that's why they have gold helmets." "Oh, thats lame, what's a dolphin?" She paused, thought real hard on how to explain a dolphin to a 3 year old "...they're like sharks... but good." Been a dolphins fan ever since.
As a lifetime Dolphins fan this is the first time that I have ever watched that game again. I knew Marino had a bad game but I didn't remember Montana running the ball that much. Now in 2023 the Dolphins are running that west coast offense with a lot of motion and some vertical passing. Mike McDaniel has done a great job of expanding a great offensive scheme.
this was a home game for the 49ers even if it was not candlestick park it was in california i think at the time before 2021 it was the closest any team has come to playing the super bowl in their own stadium and now the Buccaneers are going to play the super bowl in their own staidium , it was going to happen sooner or later.

Miami had the best offense in the AFC, but San Francisco had just as good an offense and a much stronger defense. Great game though. I loved 80s football 🏈
great assessment

This has a so much a similarity to the upcoming Super Bowl. The team with the defense and the non talked about offense is the 49ers just like in this game. And the hyped offense going into the game are the chiefs and their comparison being the Dolphins because of how hot their QB’s were and no one payed attention to their opponents offense.
yes they are, 49ers have a dominant run...no one is sleeping on the 49ers offense. Get out of here with that
MCCHESNEY22222 all the media is talking about is whether the defense can stop the Chiefs offense. When clearly the mismatch is Chiefs defense doesn’t match well against San Francisco
Marino was slinging in that first half
That Dolphins offense was insanely good, and that Niner defense shut them down. 4 pro bowlers in the secondary. One of the best ever. Joe cool was money, and Roger Craig was smooth of out the backfield. Best 49er team ever.
a secondary that fattened up on a weak schedule
Don Schula's Super bowl teams mostly lost.
Best Niners team ever doesn’t include Jerry Rice? Okay then.
@@tarantinoishEasily. This 49ers team went 15-1. It was easily the best of the 49ers teams from the 80’s
Imagine if this 49ers team had Jerry Rice. It would had been the greatest team of the 1980s *by far.*

Dan deserves a ring

I bet you never knew who Jimmy the Greek was, but he was HUGE for sports gambling and lines and odds and he had Miami up big too.
Miami was 14-2 and had a record setting offense that took 20 or so years to break and rules changes to help offenses.

They played a very weak schedule, which might be why there were doubters
This, and Super Bowl 14 in LA, are the only Super Bowls that have been hosted by a participating team. However this game was held at the massive Stanford Stadium as opposed to the oddly-shaped multi-purpose Candlestick Park. Likewise the LA Rams played in Super Bowl 14 but it was played at the Rose Bowl not the Colisuem or the Big A.
I wish Dan Marino won this super bowl...but the 84 49ers were unstoppable.
@Jermaine Durham I wish they did, but they shouldn't have won. 49ers were way better.
@Jermaine Durham Lol, more of an opinion than a fact. Niners were 15-1, and blew Miami out. Not sure how the Dolphins were better.

As a 49ers fan I can't believe Dan Marino never got a ring as good as he was, no defense and no running game.
He played like ass in this game.
Yeah he pretty much was all by himself
This game could be symbolic of what was to come for Miami for the rest of their years with Marino. A defense begins to figure out the Miami offense and their over dependence on Marino, which leads to pressure on Marino and eventual ineffectiveness and interceptions.
49ers were an absolute beast that year 💪 🏉🏆
Coach Bill Walsh is the greatest coach of all time.. these 49ers never loss a Super Bowl with him as Head Coach... Of the greatest offensive minded coaches in the NFL.. they had a really good running game Roger Craig was so dominant and Dwight Clark was a beast
Two coaches have won more Super Bowls. In fact, one coach has twice the number of super bowl wins than walsh does.
Poor Dan Marino....Never really had a chance.
Because he was a turtle 🐢 even at 23yo he was a turtle, very shamefull that a sport man looks like a turtle since young age, what he did in the summers? oh yeah nothing, only eating at Mcdonald's
We all Dolphins fans were certain that Marino will take us back to the Super Bowl but it never happened...
because he was a turtle, my grandma moves faster than that turtle
@@sodica81 he actually wasn't until he had a couple of knee injuries that slowed him down. His first few seasons he could actually move around in the pocket pretty well and even after that he rarely took a sack. The real culprit was the total lack of running game and the very subpar defense. It's shocking how bad Miami was on the defensive side of the ball when you consider Shula built his early reputation on tough defenses and a great ground game.
The beginning of the NFC's 13-year dominance over the AFC in the SB
Ironic that it would be Denver that had been such a punching bag in the early part of that period that would be the team that finally snapped that losing streak.
Papa Walsh and uncle Seibert made some great adjustments in the second quarter!
I remember the Dolphins were staying at the Hyatt Regency in Oakland and after the game Dan Marino was throwing a tantrum in the hotel lobby! Lol
Don Meredith was really enjoying the game! I appreciate these old time announcers!
He was pathetic.
And they say Dan was better than Joe? Haha it sure didn’t look like it.
I really liked Manu in the movie Necessary Roughness. He had a very small part but he was good in it.
I don’t see why teams don’t run the 2 running backs behind the qb on each side of his back side anymore… Helps with protection, opening up routes and gives the qb different options…

Roger Craig

I still can't believe Marino never had another chance
Just goes to show the importance of having a great coach and team, even around a legendary talent like him
The following year was his chance but him and his team blew it against a lucky mediocre team in the AFC championship. Had the Dolphins won they would’ve faced the Bears whom they had already proved they could beat in the regular season.
i can't believe it either
@Cyber Del Me too fam!

Yes, it was
Many think the difference in this game was the SF running game, specifically Roger Craig being unstoppable.

Chuck Studley.
I remember me and buddies watching this just two of were going for San Francisco, all those yrs ago.
This game was played in Santa Clara at Stanford Stadium.. Just 25 minutes from San Fransisco. Miami had no chance home game for the Niners
Stanford Stadium was the 49ers practice field during that time. They LITERALLY played the SB in their won backyard.
I know people get down on him because he never won a SB, but I think Dan Marino, along with Terry Bradshaw, had the strongest throwing arms in NFL history.
Fouts,moon and Elway...
I hate these old games that don't display the score, the time and the down. You don't know until someone scores. The broadcasts have really improved over the years.
Don Schula coached for 30 years won 2 Superbowls. Bill Walsh coached 9 years won 3 Superbowls.
Reminds me of this years Super bowl. Marino was unstoppable just like Mahomes. This will be the best D the Chiefs face all year.
Watching this reminded me of when Barkley took the suns against Jordans Bull and well that was as close as Barkeley got .
Just like the Redskins in the Superbiwl against Miami a couple years earlier Miami's defense was totally impotent against the run.
This allowed Theisman and Montana lots of play action and throwing time.
Lyle Blackwood got that fumble that's a 14-point swing at halftime the game event 23 ,21,that call still pisses me off till this day
This was reliving the pain all over again. Marino made a lot of mistakes, and the defense sucked.

Marino's Super Bowl was his victory over the Bears in 1985.
Saludos desde León Guanajuato México. Montana is big. NFL 👍
Dolphins won their SB's with great defenses. Marino's Dolphin teams were historically all about the offense with less and less emphasis on rebuilding a championship defense. It's a shame he never got another chance to win one.
Marino vs montana great but keith Jackson play by play at the super bowl classic
#97 Gary Johnson was absolutely dominant in this game.
The Miami linebackers couldn't cover Roger Craig and Joe Montanta scrambling. The 49er defense dared Miami to run and even played a base dime defense and their running game was crap so they couldn't take advantage of it.
Watching these highlights makes me feel young 😭😭

As a lifetime Dolphins fan this is the first time that I have ever watched that game again. I knew Marino had a bad game but I didn't remember Montana running the ball that much. Now in 2023 the Dolphins are running that west coast offense with a lot of motion and some vertical passing. Mike McDaniel has done a great job of expanding a great offensive scheme.
