The Benefits of Berberine (Weight Loss, Blood Sugar & More)

  • Berberine is one of my favorite supplements out there and has been for several years. The reason is simple: berberine helps treat the biggest and most important conditions that people face including weight gain, insulin resistance, and gut dysfunction. It's not only healthy for people who are already healthy, but it's also amazing for people who want to stay healthy!
You can use it to assist with weight loss, balance your blood sugar, build more muscle mass, or just optimize your physique.
Let's talk about the benefits of berberine and why you can make a strong case to use it.
Many of the benefits we are going to be discussing today stem from Berberine's ability to increase something called AMPK or AMP kinase. This is the same enzyme that is increased when you exercise. So when you think about the benefits, think about berberine as a tiny bottle of exercise. It doesn't replace exercise but it's helpful to wrap your head around how it's working.
Activating AMPK increases fat burning potential, mitochondrial proliferation in muscle tissue, insulin sensitivity, and much more.
With this in mind, let's talk about the benefits:
    1. Berberine can help improve insulin resistance and low blood sugar. It has been shown to be as powerful as some medications at lowering blood sugar (metformin).
    2. Berberine can help you lose weight. Berberine enhances the effectiveness of diet and exercise.
    3. Berberine can help improve your gut health. Berberine increases butyrate production and reduces local inflammation in the gut.
    4. Berberine can help lower cholesterol. Some studies show that berberine can reduce cholesterol more effectively than statins.
    5. Berberine helps treat metabolic disorders like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, type II diabetes, PCOS, high blood pressure, obesity, and elevated triglycerides.
    6. Berberine can help your brain stay healthy.
For everyday general health, use around 500 to 1,000 mg each day.
For metabolic conditions use 1,000 to 2,000 mg each day

Berberine has been a complete game changer for me!!! I’ve been fasting going on one year, and started berberine shortly after I started fasting so it’s been a while. I can tell a huge difference in berberine, exercise, and diet/fasting OMAD in my case at least. I don’t have any intention of stopping anytime soon. I actually can eat cookies, cakes, etc after my healthy meal and not gain any weight! I also take Ceylon cinnamon, chromium, and walk/elliptical for about 30 minutes after my meal. Im definitely implementing some “hacks” “Glucose Goddess” is someone I also follow and she gives great advice on how to navigate blood glucose spikes throughout the day. I take ACV before my meals and break my fast with veggies/fiber, protein, fats and then carbs. Eating in that order can lower your blood glucose spike significantly. The time I get breaks during my day consists of studying health and nutrition. It’s just fascinating to me to be able to control what happens within my body. It’s our decision and we decide what happens inside of us!

I'm now on VA Health care in the US. Very sadly, the turnover of primary care doctors at the facility I go to, is really high. I've had 3 different primary care doctors bitch at me about my a1c and try to put me on metformin. I've told all of them that I'd rather try Berberine, and that studies have shown it's supposedly as beneficial as metformin with NO side effects. The only doctor that even bothered to write it down, is the newest doctor I have.

I lost my sugar craving! Also I just wanted smaller bites! And I felt more energetic. Berberine might increase the amount of metformin in the body. This may increase its effects and side effects. This interaction seems to occur when berberine is taken around 2 hours before metformin. Taking berberine and metformin at the same time doesn't appear to increase the amount of metformin in the body.

Take it with food, or you’ll have stomach issues. Use dihydroberberine: it is more effective, lasts longer in the system (regular berberine only lasts a few hours in the body), and it causes less of the GI upset that regular berberine does.

It could be the type of meal you’re eating, as well! If you’re taking it only once a day, use dihydroberberine: it is more effective, lasts longer in the system (regular berberine only lasts a few hours in the body), and it causes less of the GI upset that regular berberine does.

I'm insulin resistant, type 2 diabetes gone through keto (down 100lbs) after yoyo dieting for 50 years and failing and I've had IBS D for over 20 years. I feel very let down by my doctors

Honestly, you are let down by regular doctors! They don’t do their own research. They “trust the science” and we know that the science is bought by the pharmaceutical industry. They own/control and manipulate the “science“ that your doctor uses to inform her practice. Unless you see a naturopathic doctor, your care is going to be very limited!
