I installed a set of these a few months ago. I upgraded my motor from a 60/40 to a 90/65. It really added a lot of weight to the back. The large beavertail pods worked great to get the boat floating higher in the water again. I have a 16ft triton ambush. As for performance it helps plane off alittle bit faster. No loss in speed. Only negative I found is I can get some porpoising of the boat depending on the angle of the trim. But that’s easy to correct with my power trim so it’s not really a big deal. If I get some time in the future I’ll post some pics. Overall I’m really happy with them so far!
Hey there John and Lila, this is Mark S. formerly from Alaska and now retired in Florida. How's that work right? Too long of a story. I have been a Coast Guard licensed fishing guide for 23 years and my passion is jet boat fishing for Salmon, Steelhead and big wild Rainbows in whitewater rivers. I maybe have 40,000 logged hours of just river time along with years of commercial fishing in the Bering Sea, etc, etc. And just when I thought I'd seen it all and done it all you come up with some pretty cool modifications. 1. Can you tell me about the plate attached to the intake shoe just above the nozzle on your outboard?? I see it has a fairly steep angle so at planing speed it adds lift to your motor, transom etc. What is it? Where did you find it? Most important, how does it work? 2. In this video you mention your pontoon boxes welded on at an angle but the camera never quite got low enough for me to see that angle? So, where your 3/1 transducer is mounted is that higher or lower than the plane line of bottom of hull? Does it add lift due to the angle or give the water relief to pass easier-faster? Or is the angle left or right? It appear the float boxes don't quite line up with the chine on the side-bottom joint?. I've owned a good many boats, 23 or more now. Many outboard jets. I've been loyal to Yamaha and always insist on running a tiller, the Yamaha Big Tiller. Usually 115hp to 200hp. Nowadays to get a 200 mounted with a tiller you have to get custom or do it yourself, many of us back in the day, were on their Guide Program and we always got 200's w/tiller. It steers much faster than a steering wheel and having the throttle in the same hand is just icing on the cake but I understand many are unsure of the set-up or afraid of consequences due to inexperience. I guess not everyone runs a white water jet boat seven days a week? I get tunnel vision sometimes, sorry. Anyhow, sure impressed and curious about your mods! I'm at cooljet20@yahoo.com Thank you and Tight Lines Mark
I've been seeing a lot of what I believe is misinformation lately about pods, especially on smaller boats. I use Beavertail float pods too and I use the small size right now because I fish out of an old Lone Star 1436 Jon Boat. I weld them on myself because I can. If I couldn't then I'd gladly pay a welder to do that for me. But I've had nothing but positive results with them. Beavertail sends detailed installation instructions and if you have a question they'll answer any question you have over the phone. They tell you how to fit them up before welding and what they need to look like when you're finished. They even keep the instructions on their website. I've always fished out of small boats for many reasons besides financial. I usually use a mud motor too because some of the water I have to navigate through is pretty small. What I have on it now is a 15HP Mud Skipper Twister and people like to trash them too. But I've had great luck with the twister and if you keep the flexible shaft lubricated and swap the 3 blade prop for a 2 blade prop with the kit that they sell, I've had nothing but a good experience. I can consistently top 20MPH with just me and my gear in the boat and that's as fast as I need to run up and down that river. Sorry, I know this a float pod post but I've heard so much negativity about the Twister that I couldn't help but comment on that too. I use a Hummingbird Helix 5 and mounted my transducer right inside the right hand side float pod and haven't had an issue. It's the same side you're mounted on but I'm mounted to the boat. My hand operated trolling motor is on the other side and it's far enough away that I get no interference from it. I generally only use it when trolling real slow and looking for structure and fish. Mounted off of the back of the pod like yours I'd be a little worried of dragging it off on something. But if you haven't had a problem that's what counts. Nobody has the same experience with their equipment as everybody else. You're probably better as a boat Capitan than I am anyway! Thanks for the video! It is full of good information.
That's amazing and you got the wail tail I just ordered both of those I have basically same set up except 90 to 65 so I realy need those beverages tails.and to see it fit with the wail tail I'm stoked..mabey a stupid question can they weld on while engine is attached. Thank you
Can you still turn completely with the whale tail or does it hit the pods. I have pods and planing is slow want to add a whale tail but not sure if it will fit
Do you or have you ever had an issue running shallow skinny water with that 3-1 transducer? I’m trying to figure out a way to mount mine without leaving any potential for damage. I have a small one in that same spot currently but thought that the big 3-1 would pose problems…
Did adding the pods effect your steering? I just purchased a 17’ Alweld with a tunnel hull and jet foot. Boat needs pods to plane faster. I contacted Alweld and they said the pods would do all that I’m wanting it to do but it would be very hard to steer
Having the pods flush with bottom and sides will affect steering OG boat design has turbulence coming around corners of the boat to help out with cavitation pocket at the stern adding the pods brings back the pocket of water and affects the steering Pods need to be lifted and angled to bring back the original design of the boat Back yard engineering will fix it

Nice! I’m definitely hearing more positive feedback on them. It’s probably the people who don’t have them that question their benefit. 😉
Having the transducer have any affect with clarity with it being so far back

Thanks! I have had nothing but great results with mine. 👍😊

How did mounting your transducer to the pod work out? I have a jet with pods too, and I think I'm getting some interference from the pods.
Can you still turn completely with the whale tail or does it hit the pods. I have pods and planing is slow want to add a whale tail but not sure if it will fit
I can when it’s down, but not when trimmed up, unfortunately. It doesn’t make much of a problem though.
Did you have to pull your motor to have the pods welded on?
Nope. 😊
Do you or have you ever had an issue running shallow skinny water with that 3-1 transducer? I’m trying to figure out a way to mount mine without leaving any potential for damage. I have a small one in that same spot currently but thought that the big 3-1 would pose problems…
Luckily I haven’t. I’m more worried about drifting around rocks at an angle and smashing it. 😟
@@fishyaker thanks, yea that’s always a concern. I will give it a try and see how she does!
Installed on my 1648 sc, nothing but positives , 40hp merc Bigfoot
Nice! Me too!
Did the pods increase your top speed at all ,?
Yep, mainly because I could get up on plane a lot easier.
What size pods did you use. I have almost the exact same setup except that I have a johnson outboard
Does beaverts make custom float pods
They might. These were a standard model though.

Do you issues to turn with the pods ?
Not much of a difference.
