"Do I Really Need POD's?" The Expert answer your looking for!

- Ok so everyone always asks me about Pods. Thier purpose is to help raise the transom to draft in less water. Basically run in shallows! In order to get the full effect, you really need to combine pods with a tunnel hull, and a jackplate on the outboard. Whatever you do make sure you get a professional to "WELD" them on. Incorrect installation can be brutal on performance and the overall ride!
Thanks for watching. I have a few new videos dropping this week, and Im going to keep them coming!

"Dude... absolute perfection in all categories.
No leaks from install.
No water splash over the transom, not even a drop at w.o.t.
No crazy slight pull compared to others.
Run rpm's up to 6200, smooth as silk.
Stable as can be. I jumped up and down on rear bench, waterline didnt even move all.
Those angle L's actually performed their job, channeled that lil' bit of intermediate water right on out.
Right weld method of installation, The right factory pods made specifically for boat and most importantly The right person with the right skill set putting it all together!!
I cant thank you enough for turning this around. Thanks again."
Nice job , it did look better with the pods . I like the float pods that are longer and have steps , they make it super easy to get in and out of the boat . I have a 17 express with a 90 suzuki 4 stroke and take water over the stern , I am looking for stepped pods if anyone can give me a clue .
Thanks most of them are custom built. Id check with Xpress
Awesome!!! Fixing to install some on my Lowe. Glad I watched this!!! You do awesome work man!!! 👊
Thanks brotha!
Good job
Thanks brotha
Great welds on the bottom of the pods. They looked better than the factory seams you could see beside yours. Really good advice to have the pods welded on.
Thanks brotha. Welding is easy after 21yrs. Running a business is the hard part lol.
Good to see someone doing quality work like yourself. Keep up the good work man, people like you are rare now days.
Appreciate it!
I have a lower roughneck 1860 with a 115/80 jet. And it has pods. I really want to mount a kicker motor but for the life of me can’t figure out how I would do that. My electric trolling motor just isn’t powerful enough to troll up river and the jet doesn’t turn well at low speed
Idk man. I guess you need some type of extension for the kicker
I personally have an aversion to drill holes below the water line.
Preaching to the choir!
16 nice size holes on your new transom vs. welding. Hmmm, NO. Well it looks great now.
I’m curious what the cost to have pods welded on like that is? Do you have any guidance as to the cost for this service?
Idk what others charge, but my price ranges $500 up
@@TRICKEDTINSthank you for the response. That doesn’t seem unreasonable given the skill level and experience required to weld aluminum.
The beavertail pods are garbage we make custom pods out here in Utah. They should also angle up slightly. Great job bro doing it the right way
Hey mate .pods ? Do these work on V bottom boats like quintrex dorys.
Just want more floatation at rear.
But unsure how it could affect the way it goes on the water.
My boat 5.2 m
I'm from Perth Western Australia.
@jasonsensenberger3287 I honestly have never seen them put on a v-bottom they would probably have to be really customized to the boat. These are are mainly used for shallow water situations but a friend of mine here in Utah, USA custom makes them for the specific boat
I'm sure it would help with Displacement. I'm no expert on boat hull engineering tho.
Are the channels you added/welded on the inside of the pods to keep water from splashing up!!? 🤔
Exactly
My man got that shop cleaned up and lookin good. That’s what i like to see. 👍🏻😎🔥
Wow... Dude drilled into a brand new Welded boat..... Good content!
Yeah, I literally had to pause the video at that point and decompress for a minute in total shock. 😮
Yes you needs some pods! They revolutionize the way your boat works!
I just happen to have a spare set for sale if you are interested…….?
Did you have a problem with insulation on the other side of the wall?
No foam in the transom? Just wood.
Do they slow boats down? I’m thinking on adding them to my 1436 but I don’t wanna loose speed
That boat is way to small for pods anyway
@@TRICKEDTINS okay I see. I just saw my buddy do it on that size is why I thought it may work. I’m running a 670 Longtail and it’s heavy is why I wanted them !
@@TRICKEDTINS my grandpa has a Lincoln mig welder. It does aluminum and steel you just reverse some leads inside and change the wire we have done it in the past. If I’m welding a boat .50 or so thick what’s a good place to start on my heat and wire feed ? Doesn’t have to be pretty just wanna not burn holes to bad
What is the real reasoning for the pods? I have a pontoon boat that is 15 ft long with a 40 horse Mercury and I think the motor is too heavy was thinking about adding one foot to each toon.
To add buoyancy to the back of the boat. Main goal is to run in shallows!
The motor is the right size for the toon the issue is these days they are making the pontoons smaller diameter and there fore less weight capacity, It would be just as or easier to add the third pontoon in the middle as a few people are doing now days the benefit far out ways adding length to the pontoons. you can take an old pontoon and customize it to fit or buy a new one as the industry is all ready offering tri toon boats all ready.
I got backwater pods welded onto my boat. Their customer service was great. Came with simple concise instructions. Super solid grab handles and drain plugs. Keeps my tail out of the water on rough big water so I don't get swamped.
Yeah Jake gilk is a solid dude and they make a great product. I've been there and ripped around a bunch of thier motors over the years.
I had Beavertail small pods welded on a 1448 landau mod v hull by a local (he was excellent, worked for space X). He followed the instructions, and I couldn't be happier. Boat rides soooo much better, easier plane, and same 30mph top speed with 25hp 2 stroke yamaha. Only noticeable difference besides all the benefits is turning is slightly slippery/harder at high speeds, but ever so slightly.
Glad it worked out for you. Pods are hit or miss sometimes
I bought a welder just to weld my pods on, now i can weld aluminum
Hey man, love your channel. Question for ya, if someone wanted to have you build a custom tin deep v boat, do they sell just raw shells or do I have to buy the whole kit and kaboodle?
Im sure you can purchase just a hull. You'll have to reach out to the manufacturer and special order. SeaArk makes some nice deep v boats.
If you go with a longer boat you don't need the pods.
Sounds good, lol?
that outboard is way to big for that boat you need pods
Thats why we put them on!
Nahh I got a 60 on mine it’s a 1670 that’s 18’ -20 ‘ I bet she do a 115 know no poblano
I got a 60 on a 16/52 and it set’s perfect in the water with out pods
Putting some on I guess I got a big motor
Goodluck
Add pods but no jet or jackplate? Seems kinda odd honestly.
Edit: Read your description and see that you agree
Let's Gooooooo!!!!! Be Safe
Where do you purchase your flooring materials for your builds?
m.facebook.com/fabricsdirect4you
okay I see you.
W the pods I’ll take that 70 so u can put on a 90 ha ha. Perfect size for me express The pods are nice the dog can get in out the back
I like Xpress
No need to weld those 16 holes prior to adding the pods. Add the pods by tacking from inside the hull through the holes. Then run a bead around the entirety of the pods like you normally would. In theory that even strong than what you did because you have 16 extra welds. Not that it was necessary but would have saved time.
You know how much harder it would've been to weld those holes upside down leaning over the boat. I see your thought process but it aint worth all that effort. Those pods will still be on that boat when im dead and gone.
Very nice
Masking tape is too adhesive! Much better if they'd used blue painter's tape. Nice Job!
I agree 👍 💯
So probably a dumb question but here goes if you welded a heavy plate across the pods and built a Jack plate on the back of them would that give you a tunnel hull and allow you to run in less water or would it just F everything up
Idk. I think it would need to gradually slope for a tunnel.
Couple of things,
1. Could you push from the inside of the boat to close that gap you were talking about?
2. Its been my experience thats its best if they are mounted half each in and up from the edges?
3. Whats the cost?
$450 to weld on if the transom is in good shape.
@TRICKEDTINS thanks. I have a one year old lowe roughneck 1660. Great boat but sits a little low in the back. A 40hp merc, me(215lbs) 6 gallons of fuel and 2 batteries weighs it down pretty good. I'd have you do mine but I'm in Ft Myers Florida. Thank you for your quick response.
And I know just the guy you can call
time is money, could of had this done in a quarter of the time by using a aluminum Spool gun the mig welt them on and still have the stacked dime look. Tig slow af.
Im good on that. Thanks for sharing tho...
we get checked by the coast guard the power rating is on the vin label
I've been stopped by marine police a couple times never had anybody check that tho.
I fabricated some pods and put them flush to the bottom this created to much lift , so that the motor would captivate unless weight(passenger) would be brought to the back (tiller drive)
Pods are tricky. Wieght distribution is critical.
Did the same thing, should have had the pods about 1 inch off the bottom, to much lift and captivates unless more weight in back
Get a spoil gun. Tig the pentrating welds. And cold weld the cover pass on the bigger gaps. Just thinking out loud here.
I have a 1/2 dozen spool guns, nothing like tig welding though? I feel like I have so much more control!
Why didn’t you use a few pieces of angles to close the gaps? Tack them on the hull and the pod and bring them together with a clamp?
Why would i do that if i could just fill it with one pass? Adding an angle adds 2 more passes???
@@TRICKEDTINS if you add an angle “iron” to one, then to the other, clamp the angles with a clamp, close the gap, tack, remove the tacked angles, finish the pass? You might need several angles, but it would only require one good pass and there would eventually be no gap and no warps. Basically - angles, clamp, tack, remove angles, angles, clamp, tack, remove angles, repeat until there’s no gaps and then weld complete.
Will these help with porpoising? Thanks in advance
Yes. Its all about buoyancy and wieght distribution
Would you be interested in building me 2 20 inch hatch doors
Yes TrickedTinsJonboats.com
Camera angle or is that prop massive? Lol
Camera angle
Do you think those are strong enough to hold a 200# person on one of those pods?
Hell yeah. Im 215 and i stood on them no problem. Id bet they would hold 500+ easily.
? Pods are for shallow or heavy motors he could probably do a 90 or 115 on the back and still set 4-6 “ of draft so I’d say 100-150 per pod ? Just a guess
What are they for?
Add buoyancy
Quality job looks good!!
Thanks brotha!
Love the vids bro
Thanks brotha!
What waste of time
Lol to each is own
