THE LIST
Obvious Child
Director: Gillian Robespierre
We’re kicking off the list with a surprisingly underrated romantic comedy, where the meet-cute, break-up, make-up formula is put the the test, carried by Jenny Slate’s amazing performance.
Enemy
Director: Denis Villeneuve
Jake Gyllenhaal plays both a man and his mysterious exact look-alike in this baffling thinner that was maybe a bit too out there to bring it in at the box office, but is more than worth a second look at home.
Jodorowsky’s Dune
Director: Frank Pavich
Documentaries are rarely box office hits, but this look at cult film director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s attempt to bring Frank Herbert’s classic Dune to the big screen in its own way deserved more attention than it got in our opinion.
Only Lovers Left Alive
Director: Jim Jarmusch
Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston star in what has to be the most unusual vampire movie we’ve seen pretty much ever.
Joe
Director: David Gordon Green
Joe is noteworthy for an unusually understated performance from Nicholas Cage, and its gritty-yet-heartfelt story of reception.
Locke
Director: Steven Knight
Tom Hardy gives a world class, practically solo, performance as a man driving his car, propelled by a series of phone calls that threaten to destroy his life.
A Most Wanted Man
Director: Anton Corbijn
One of Philip Seymour Hoffiman’s last projects, A Most Wanted Man is a spy thriller that deals with the legal and technological world of espionage, rather than the flash glamour.
The Rover
Director: David Michôd
A Mad Max without the over-the-top costuming, The Rover follows Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson down the roads of a ruined world.
The Edge of Tomorrow (or Live Die Repeat)
Director: Doug Liman
Despite some top-notch action, and outstanding action performances from stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, Edge of Tomorrow managed to underperform at the box office, perhaps prompting its re-branding under a new title. Regardless, this fresh, honest take on a time-loop premise is well worth a watch.
Starred Up
Director: David Mackenzie
Despite a strong performance from star Jack O’Connell, and a tense, expertly crafted story, Starred Up managed to go almost completely unnoticed this year.
Starting to think Jake Gyllenhaal as a whole is an underrated actor.
yes he is! nightcrawler kept me on the edge of my seat the whole movie and his performance was beyond espectacular
I think he finally found his niche, which is a bit odd because he's been in it all along with Donnie Darko and Zodiac, but the stars have aligned now and allowed him to show off his potential as an actor.
October Sky-he is phenomenal, as is Chris Cooper.
Definitely, him and his sister..
It's almost as if both of them are so willing to do just about any role in front of the camera, that they're treated as expendables or something.. But they kill it everytime tho 🤔. I would like to see them star in a movie together, that should be something epic
What We Do In The Shadows was also a freaking hilarious comedy that is incredibly underrated
Utterly agree.
The Drop was a solid send off for Gandolfini and not many people have seen it or saw it in theaters.
I also really enjoyed Edge of Tomorrow (and no one believes me, especially because the Tom Cruise factor!). Other underrated films I loved: 1,000 Times Good Night (saw it at a fest, I think it went straight to video), and Finding Vivian Maier (fantastic documentary).
Too bad Chef wasn't on this list. Such a tasty movie.
Neil Mcintosh Yeah, but not on THIS one.
Ethan Reuben I see what you did there...
Anyway, I watched Chef at the cinema, and while the first part was quite good, frankly, it lost it near the end. Really lost it.
It was OK. It kinda sucked near the end, but OK. Not great and not underrated.
Fun fact: I watched it in one of those fancy as fuck open cinemas where you are on a balcony sort of thing with a table and they serve you food, because a friend of mine is the manager of that cinema. I was really hungry until the second half of the movie, and the gourmet foods shown on screen only made me hungrier. Then, they served us, and I ate a bit too much. Because of that, I just couldn't stand watching them make and eat all those Cuban sandwiches! God damn that movie!
But in the end, that's just your opinion. I really enjoyed it. Sure, I can understand your problem with the ending, but it was fine for me. Its nice to watch a feel-good movie once in a while.
Ethan Reuben Yeah, I get what you mean. It was ok though. 7/11 for me.
The Guest by Adam Wingard should've been here.
Watched Starred Up, thanks to you, amazing film! Subscribed!
Never thought I'd see the day where I go see a movie with Robert Pattinson in it. But here I go. Seriously, kudos on him trying to put that Twilight crap behind him. :)
Starred Up was probably the best film of the year. Truly amazing acting throughout.
I really enjoyed Enemy, Lock and A Most Wanted Man, but in truth I did seek them out, which is why I saw them.
Like some people have commented before me The Drop is worth a watch as well. The way Michaël R. Roskam worked with the colours and the slow and beautiful way in with the truth is the caracters is revealed is beautiful. Bullhead by Michaël R. Roskam is also a good film.
So glad Starred Up was #1 and that Jack O'Connell is finally getting the recognition he deserves. Great list
Nice picks, though I actually think Edge of Tomorrow was quite popular. I'd like to give mention to Under the Skin as one of the most underrated movies of 2014. It's quite weird, artsy and extremely divisive but I loved it.
Jim Jarmusch does not really have a bad film. They all have interesting characters and give details on things we do everyday that we don't realize. If you've never seen one of his films I'd recommend starting in the 90s Night on Earth, Dead Man and Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai are all excellent.
what about A Most Violent Year? That's gotta be one of 2014's biggest flops, with amazing acting, writing, cinematography, and music
Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler was astounding and underrated.
Thank you for putting starred up as #1.It truly deserves it
The Double is actually based on a Dostoievski's novel (not Kafka), whilst Enemy on Saramago's. It seems people got SO confused about that. And for the record, I found The Double much better.
It makes me sick that these movies have gone under the radar and transformers 4 got one billion in the box office, it says something about us doesn't it.
The Tale of Princess Kaguya. It is one of the greatest films Studio Ghibli has ever produced, and it got a terribly limited release. Almost no one saw it in the US, even though it puts all other animated films and nearly every live-action film that came out to utter shame.
I was truly sad when Philip Seymour Hoffman died. He may not have been in hundreds of movies, or even great movies, but he was an amazing actor just coming into his own.
COMPLETELY AGREE! I saw starred up as soon as i could when it came out and LOVED IT!! Very intense but not overdone performances all around I totally felt the documentary vibe too. One of my all time favorites and hardly anyone has heard of it :(
So I just watched Jodorowsky's Dune because of this, holy actual fuck. That would have been an experience of a lifetime.
You guys failed to list Whiplash in here as well. Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons (aka Spiderman's J. Jonah Jameson) are gripping in this thrilling movie of about a musician wanting to be the best in his field. The whole plot sounds a bit boring but the movie is masterfully executed. It will keep you on your toes the whole time and with a score that just kicks ass.
I'll try to see Edge of Tomorrow after this. Groundhog Day, by the way, is one of the finest films ever made, in my humble estimation, and should surely top any list of movies that should have been routine and turned out to be a masterpiece. (For another top-notch example of "Live, die repeat", Sourcecode.)
I don't know if ‘Frank’ went under the radar but if it did I think that was one my favourite under rated films
i havent seen Enemy, but i loved Ayoade's the Double. One of my favorites
Enemy was incredible, Villeneuve is a master
I didnt watch edge of tomorrow because of tom cruise and the advertisements made the movie seem cheesy, constantly called it matrix + groundhog day. Basically everything that set it to be a hollywood blockbuster.
I felt the same at first, til i torrented it... Now i regret not supporting im the box office. It's awesome!
Edge of Tomorrow is Groundhog Day via Starship Troopers.
I think Amazing Spider-Man 2 is criminally underrated
Predestination. Loved it. The writing was amazing.
Sorry to be "that guy". But it really bothered me: The Double is based on a novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, not Franz Kafka.
The Internets Own Boy is an incredible documentary
I love you, Cinefix.
These movies are definately not underrated but underappreciated. None of them were rated badly.
Didn't really think much of Locke.
And I do really have to watch Starred Up, I hate the accent and vernacular. "I'll buss you up, innit bruv."
please do a top 10 underrated movies of the new century pls
there are way too many
*I Origins* was a freaking great movie, very underrated.
Starred Up floored me
some of these movies are great but they are underrated for other reason, for example, many people may not like certain actors in these movies, or a director , they may not like the genre , they may be jaded by late movies , there are many reasons
I really like John Wick for some reason. Of course it doesn't have the best acting, but I fucking loved the thing having watched it 4 -5 times.
HOLY SHIT THAT WAS TILDA IN SNOWPIERCER
Kirby C i know right?! i couldn't believe it, all throughout the movie i kept thinking this lady looks familiar.
Edge of Tomorrow was fucking awesome!
John Wick was a fun action movie and Reeves best action flick since the Matrix.
clockworkrazor John Wick is one of the most bland and idiotic action movies of 2014, if not the most.
A guy that kills people because his dog was killed, pretty much it. No character exploration, nothing.
SoulRippster Sigh... ever heard of a parody? Fucking peasants.
WTFisthisshitWTF That explains it, if it fails utterly as an action movie then it's a parody. Logic.
SoulRippster No it was set out to be a parody from the get go. Logic
Brandon Miller Don't bother, the guy has a stick too far in his ass. Logic doesn't apply to him
Thank You!! I loved the Rover
Completely agree with starred up fucking great movie bloody cried my eyes out but surprised there was no mention of Calvary
Nightcrawler was seriously underrated
who else openned a new tab and went straight to pirate bay?
Starred Up. Some of the best acting u will ever see.
'The one I love' and 'Frank'.
What We Do in the Shadows!
Edge of tomorrow was amazing
Book of life needs to be on this list.
The Babadook now being one of my favorite films: I would have liked to see it on this list.
But it got a mention and I think it did pretty ok for a movie it's type, so fine.
Looks like I have some movies to watch now. Thanks!
Coherence was fucking amazing.
So I'm not the only person who saw that movie.. Good to know.
okay,i watched after seeing your comment. that movie WOW!!
That movie was great, a must watch! (At least twice) :)
best indie i saw since ink tbh
samandwhatnot Best quote in that movie. Lol
I anticipate your 2015 list, Cinefix
Sure is taking a while though
+Viral Shift your telling me😂
Quaylie2001 I dont think he was telling you
The Drop should've made the list. James Gandolfini (his last film) and Tom Hardy carried a very interesting and intriguing story, especially his performance. He embodied the character Bob and gave him this distinct personality, almost like the character portrays himself as silly or stupid, when in fact he is very calculating and intelligent. ''Nobody ever sees you coming, do they Bob?''
I think the film merits under the underrated category. I would have had no idea about it if I wasn't a fan of both leading actors.
really good movie too. Kinda underrated like you said, i knew about it cuz i saw it somewhere and download it but had no idea what it was about or anything
Yeah, great movie!!
It was a good movie, should have at least gotten a mention when they talked about Locke
I saw Locke and I saw The Drop and while I totally respect what Locke did and what it was, The Drop was far better in my opinion. Locke had a great premise and great acting, but the story wasn't all that compelling. The whole film it's played off as "this can't be what you think it is", but then it turns out to be exactly that. The Drop, as the OP quoted, you never see it coming. And the whole story is like that. Of the four main characters, only one story seems underdeveloped, but even that character has enough mystery that you do want to know more.
I'm happy to see the Rover. I love that film. In fact The Rover, John Wick and The Drop all have a similar story element (to state it would be a spoiler for at least one of the three films).
Loved the Drop got to see it a week before it came out at a press screening. I loved it.
Enemy was awesome. I barely understood it, but it was awesome.
I literally clapped in front of my tv when the credits came on. I didn't get it either.
I feel like I'm the only one who saw predestination
Kenny Williams nope im with you.. it was great
Kenny Williams I had to see atleast two thirds of the trailer to make myself remember I'd even seen the movie. Not a good sign, bruh. Spoiler alert he fucks himself, sort of, time-travelling and shit.
Kenny Williams It should've been in the list instead of the first 2 movies.
Kenny Williams Man that one was a ride.
Kenny Williams that was one mind f€%&.....loved it! Good call right there.....
This channel is awesome
"Another film took poop jokes, pee-farting..."
Nope. Not watching that. I am not five years old.
Mikeztarp cool
raniely candelario story
Slim Dawg bro
Mikeztarp Yea, that line also made me disinterested in watching the movie.
+Mikeztarp It's a romcom about falling in love with someone that knocked you up. There's going to be some ugly pregnancy truths and commentary on abortion in there.
please do another 10 that we might have missed. there cant be just 10 underrated movies.
There's a bunch of others mentioned in the video.
11:03
The trip to Italy - www.imdb.com/title/tt2967006/
Under the Skin - www.imdb.com/title/tt1441395/
Blue Ruin - www.imdb.com/title/tt2359024/
The Raid 2 - www.imdb.com/title/tt2265171/
Le Week-End - www.imdb.com/title/tt2392326/
The Babadook - www.imdb.com/title/tt2321549/
i know the mention more but there are still a lot left to mention and i find this fixation with only ten titels weird. but good job with the imdb link in your comment david.
David McGlashan Thanks!
timoench w
No Snowpiercer?
yup
Nick Abad he did mention it
+Nick Abad It was made in 2013. And he did mention it in passing anyway
+Nick Abad Loved that. Forgot about it very quickly though.
snowpiercer is such a nice movie. i wonder how it manage to catch any hype since captain america is in it?
The Rover is the most underrated film of the 21st century. It's an absolute masterpiece.
Agreed. Beautiful in its stark gritty simplicity. Both GP and RP turned in stellar performances.
Isn't Edge of Tomorrow really similar to Source Code?
For me Source Code was better, partly because of Jake Gyllenhaal
It has more in common with Groundhog Day. The connection is pretty tenuous
Two of these movies on your list (one was mentioned) star MIa Wasikowska. I'd definitely recommend giving some more of her movies (Tracks, Map to the Stars, Stoker) some watches- I think they'd be up Cinefix's alley!
Tracks. Excellent.
Edge of Tomorrow was my first 3-d movie, and I went to the theater stoned. I was blown away by the 3-d aspect of that movie. Now I don't know if it was really done well, or it just weed.
probably just the ganja bro
Jordan W. Could be.
I personally think Enemy was incredible and one of the best movies I've ever seen
Agree.
José Saramago is a genius! The movie sure made justice to his book!
I liked it, but I didn't quite fully understand it which I think was a big reason why it wasn't well recieved by many
+Katahn Hardy U should watch ChrisStuckman's video explaining this movie. It's mind f*cking blowing. The meaning behind Spiders are so interesting.
+Pedro Santos was*(sadly) a genius
The Babadook, The Chef and The Predetination : These were definetly needed in the list.
+Soham Salunke Babadook was ridiculous. As scary as Sesame Street.
It wasn't scary, it was a psychological thriller -_-
+Nautilus1972 - It wasn't meant to be 'scary'. It was meant to make you question what was real.
+Nautilus1972 probably because you still think it's a horror film and not a drama
+Soham Salunke The Predetination is fucking garbage, what is wrong whit you people
Nightcrawler and Frank. Also, The Double was by Fyodor Dostoyevsky not Kafka.
Well at least snowpiercer was mentioned.
Definitely, starred up is the most underrated movie of 2014
What We Do In The Shadows, is another good vampire movie that turns the genre upside down in a mockumentary fasion
The Double is based on a book by Dostoyevsky, not Kafka. On the other hand, thank you for mentioning Jodorowsky's Dune. It was the best documentary of the year, and one of the best I have ever seen. And kudos for pronouncing “Jodorowsky” correctly. Also, if you are talking about things underrated, I wish you would mention the sources for some of these films. Joe is based on a book by Larry Brown, a very good writer. Great list, thank you.
W.A.S.T.E.
Jake gyllenhaal is so underrated
Why are the no videos including Fury. It's one of the best movies ive ever seen and it isnt in any listings. It is 100% highly underrated.
It made a good bit of money and pretty much everyone knows about it even if they didn't see it.
*****
Its not in any top 10's or 20's or mentions though. That was my point.
Steven Travers And my point was that it is not underrated so it doesn't need to be.
*****
Touché, sir. Well played. Until we meet again, goodluck.
Steven Travers And I look forward to our next meeting. You are truly a worthy adversary.
YES LOCKE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE FILMS OF ALL TIME AND MY FAVORITE TOM HARDY PERFORMANCE. Sorry for caps, I'm just very excited about that
I'm so glad to see another person who appreciates "Locke" as much as I do.
A very brave attempt at censoring all the sweariness in that clip from Starred Up - but you missed a bit of a biggie at the end where he calls the guy in the white sweater a 'see-you-next-tuesday'
Couldn't agree more on Starred Up being number 1, as well as the inclusion of Locke and Obvious Child. The fact that these movies slipped through the cracks and that Starred Up only made $50,000 at the box office while Adam Sandler can make millions just for going on vacation and Michael Bay can make a profit for churning out explosion after explosion just disgusts me.
Locke had great acting dont get me wrong, Hardys performance was amazing BUT the story was garbage it was just so slow and predictable. Locke shouldn't be on this list at all.
Edge Of Tomorrow is such an underrated one for sure. I myself didn't even know how to appreciate it when it came out and only discovered its genius and beauty when it was shown on Fox Movies. Such a great scifi film.
I really like "Only Lovers Left Alive". I had to watch it twice to catch all the little references, especially the ones about Tesla. Reading up on the movie, apparently Eve was written as a Celt who had seen Stonehenge being built, while Adam was just a few centuries old. I wish that had been put in the movie, it would have explained Eve a little more. I also really like that her "sister" was right, they HAD fallen away from their real selves, and had to return to the vampire life fully if they wanted an end to the boredom and ennui. I also would love to know why they could never go back,to London, even just for a change of planes. Some big bad vamp told them to steer clear?
Great list. JOE, LOCKE, Edge of Tomorrow and Starred UP are top notch movie. JOE restored my faith to Nick Cage that he was a damn great actor.
I honestly think gone girl was the best film to come out this year. one of the best lead actress performances I've seen and Afleck was actually good
Predestination
Excellent Film one of the best i've seen in years.
Predestination should've been called Predictable. I was not surprised by any of the twists throughout the film and furthermore saw them coming a mile away. It could've used better writing, and direction.
2015
DecrepitServant The writting was perfect for what predestination priginaly was: a book called All You Zombies. In a book you wouldn't have all the covered faces that make obvious it's one of the characters you see in the movie. Plus, even if you guess everything, the history is fucked up enough to leave you thinking.
SuperTortilhaDeMorango I don't care about the book, or how well the book was written.. The screenplay was not well written at all.
Franz Kafka?! The Double is based on a novella written by Fyodor Dostoyevsky called The Double.
So glad Under the Skin did not make the list, it was not good and to compare it to Kubrick style directing is an insult.
obvious child
enemy
jodorowsky’s doom
only lovers left alive
joe
locke
a most wanted man
the rover
edge of tomorrow
starred up
It feels like it's been years and years since I saw Only Lovers Left Alive and I know I've seen it at least 5 times with huge gaps between each viewing. Like, it's not registering that it was only released in 2014.
The Drop should have been on the list
Great fucking film. Talk about understated performances: Tom Hardy is so controlled and so sincere.
Milo Dodd loved his performance so much, did you watch locke
I haven't seen it yet! Definitely on the to do list though.
ɷ I Haveeee Watcheddd Thisss Movieee Leakedddd Version Heree : - t.co/RlKbv1hghK
Wheeeeeere the hell is FranK? Literally one of the funniest movies of the 2000s. It's incredible, and you guys NEVER mention it.
Edge Of Tomorrow was not underrated, sure it bombed but everyone bums the shit out of that movie when it wasn't even all that great.
Thank you! I couldn't agree more.
I don't think people are saying it's overrated, but that it was a good, fresh new idea (i know, Groundhog Day, etcetcetc...) in a world where everyone bitches about everything being a sequel or remake or reboot... so it kinda feels like yeah, you all bitch that there's nothing new, but then no one goes to see Edge of Tomorrow or Looper or The Rover, so you are pretty much creating the demand for more sequels and reboots...
Edge of Tomorrow was awesome
Cyril I didn't feel it was like Groundhog Day...it is MUCH more similar to a video game. Anyone who has gamed would recognise the brilliance of this movie.
NZDLo oh, I'm in total agreement with you. I simply wrote that because you and I both know had I stated that EoT was wholly original, everyone from here to Calcutta would jump all over me spouting off how the repeat thing was once done in a Twilight Zone episode and the mech-suits stem from Hanzi-Zuno issue 117.2 and the line "come find me when you wake up" was first uttered in the French film Ferme des Singes, blahblahblah... so I figured I'd cover my ass a bit. I'm familiar with the 36 Dramatic Situations and that no story is truly "original", but when people take ideas that wouldn't seem to work together and they make something new from it, that's considered fairly original, and I'd much prefer that to, say another cut-and-paste Transformers film.
The reason i love this channel is because it seems that most big name movie critics these days (Academy Awards, etc) don't actually watch any of the movies they rate/nominate. You guys do a great job of surveying all the lesser known and more interesting movies out there. Thanks!
I saw "Only Lovers Left Alive" and thought it was little more that a self-serving aesthetic trip with great art direction and camera, but literally dead characters. For fans and/or vampires only
+Éric “Rico” Théoret yeah i wanted to see it until i learned who the director was, lots of people love him but i havent seen a movie of his that i liked
+Kenny Spillman It's certainly not a bad movie if you're into music and vampires :)
Éric Théoret yes that sounds amazing, i will check it out but if i dont like it im done with that director. i love Swinton and Hiddleston
Kenny Spillman Well both actors seem to be really enjoying doing the movie. I find Jarmusch too focused on his own coolness (Lost Highway was miserable), but this one is one of his best movies.
+Éric “Rico” Théoret I thought DAVID LYNCH did LOST HIGHWAY!? at any rate i do agree JARMUSCH can be a little into his own coolness!! CHEERS!!
I liked Edge of Tomorrow, but I didn't think it was amazing.
Mostly because as an action film it lacked suspense. Not because of how it was made but because of the core concept. Most of the movie I didn't fear for the characters because if something went wrong; Kill Tom Cruise and try again.
An underrated movie I saw this year was Bad Words. Jason Batemen being a dick to children in a spelling bee was just hilarious. But the mystery of his motivation made the movie intriguing and made this absolute asshole relatable
I would like to add to that list "The Drop" with Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini in his last performance. "A Walk Among The Tombstones" with Liam Neeson, a movie which was wrongly advertised as one of his "Taken"-like actioners, instead it was anything but that. "Citizenfour" should be a must see on the documentary list. And definitely and wholeheartedly I would add and recommend "John Wick" as ont of the best action movie in recent years! After flops and unremarkable roles, Keanu Reeves is back in action and kicking ass! I would also throw in there "The November Man", with Pierce Brosnan also kicking as in a non-Bond R-rated spy action thriller, it doesn't re-invent the wheel but it's a pretty fun ride!
The Double channeled KAFKA?! It was an original story by Dostoevsky.. my soul is crushed in the most melodramatic way of all time. Perhaps reflective of Kafka's absurdism, but that is just completely wrong.
Speaking of Edge of Tomorrow/Live Die Repeat, they were mistaken on a few things. They said it was a graphic novel, it wasnt. The movie is based on the Japanese novel, All You Need is Kill written by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. It irked my they said go buy it so more original stuff could be made since the was localized to audiences outside of Japan. Kinda think that Hollywood should take a few ideas from Japan, especially anime.
