I got paid week off from work because project got canceled last minute, needed this one for sure. I'll be productive around the house, but for end of day... Thank you!!
I could only watch Sunshine if I treat it like a cartoon because the premise is so bad, so incredibly bad, that I can not take anything else seriously.
Primer 👍 be prepared to not fully understand the first time watching. Do not watch before bed if you are a heavy thinker as you might not sleep that night.
Thank you for including The Fountain in this list! I had the good fortune to be part of the Visual Effects team for this film and it continues to be one of the films I am most proud to have contributed to. I've always thought it was an exceptional film and recommend it often. I was thrilled to see it on the list, and a little flattered to see my work in the clips you showed. Cheers!
Never thought of The Fountain was underrated. Unfortunately, for me it wasn't a SciFi, more like an allegory... And it is one of the rare man-sad movies I've ever seen. Cudos to you and the crew, sir, you've done a splendid job.
The Fountain is a great movie, for sure, and the VFX are top notch. Not mentioned in the video is the excellent score from Clint Mansell. He also scored Moon.
I absolutely LOVED the movie Upgrade!! I'm usually a mostly horror/suspense person but decided to watch Upgrade and OMG it is action packed, funny at times and a 10/10 movie!
Be sure to watch the film 12 Monkeys is based on -- La Jetee by Chris Marker (French film maker). In truth it is a collage of images with a narration -- not actually a film and it was made with no budget to speak of in 1962. One of the best and most haunting time travel/ post-apocalypse movies you are likely to see. Terry Gilliam remade it into 12 Monkeys. ua-cam.com/video/QeTdW6IrwIw/v-deo.html
Definitely overlooked. Even though very much appreciated by those who know it and lately it's.been getting a lot of attention. I imagine advances like crispr cas 9 and the fact that erve now managed to literally fully reverse age mice to cure their blindness, make them smarter and healthier in every possible way.. were in for a weird weird future. But i think it will be different from gataca in the sense that we can actually edit our DNA

I'm one of the directors of Turbo Kid and just wanted to write thank you for the kind words and putting our movie on your list! And what an amazing list it is! we are right beside Dredd! feels good! Anyway, have a great day!
I'm not even sure where or how I found Turbo Kid, but it is one of my favourite movies ever! Love the music, actors, story, gore, everything! It's now one of my comfort movies.....might go watch it now So THANK YOU!
@@251TheMechanizedSingfantry - If you like Napoleon Dynamite and artsy funny feel, Brigsby bear has almost more of a "what if" campy coming of age with a hint of comedy and same goes with Gentlemen Broncos but nothing mind bending serious toned sci-fi theme in the vein of The Frame I was hoping for finding .. 😕
I'd add The Man From Earth. Complete cerebral Sci-Fi. Just people in a room, talking, and blowing your mind Zero effects. Just an amazing concept that carries the story nicely.
If you want silly and comedic sci-fi time travel movies, I suggest "Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel". I watched it for Chris O'Dowd, but loved it for the sheer goofyness. I don't know if it would necessarily make a top 10 list, but it's a fun and light-hearted watch that I don't think I've ever heard anyone mention.
An unknown and underrated film that I stumbled upon a couple of years ago is Time Trap. It's not big budget, but the idea is fascinating and gets my imagination going every time I watch it.
Agreed.. the myth of the fountain of youth combined with incredible unsuspected time slippage was a trip.. made me wonder about what happens to people who just disappear without a trace..
In all honesty, I prefer the original Judge Dredd with Stallone. The newer Dredd is good, I just like the open world of the original than just the mega city of the second.
That was an excellent FLICK CONNECTION, Darren. I’m glad you selected Upgrade as your #1. Outstanding recommendation. Many thanks for sharing with us and take care. Looking forward to further presentations for 2023 👍👍👍
Looks like a few others have mentioned it, but Coherence is a killer science fiction. There's no aliens, space travel or robots - no special effects of any kind, really. It's set in present day, and the set of almost the entire movie is one completely ordinary house. They start seeing dopplegangers of themselves and spend the rest of the film trying to figure out what is happening until one character takes adantage of it in the last act. It's quiet, clever, smart, well-written and cast with all unknowns. It ranks with Moon as a mindbender, and pulls off a lot with very little.
I'll say it here again Upgrade should have been the 21st century Knight Rider, with the movie showing "Karr" origin and then have a Tv series with a "Michael Knight" having "Kitt" ride in him. You could even have seasonal upgrades of Kitt and Michael with cyborg stuff.
My friend and I went in that movie blind, and screamed how good it was afterwards. Love that it’s the better Venom film. Hopefully the tv show gets made
@@kardez671 Unfortunatelly there doesn't seem to exist any news related to a Tv show connected to the film. It would be nice if they did something similar to Limitless (Film and Tv show)
Finally a list I can totally agree with. The Fountain is brilliant and I stumbled upon it years ago. It had such an impact on me I actually find it very hard to watch as it really hits me that hard emotionally. Between the story, the acting and the visual effect I get completely pulled in. It becomes hard to shift back into reality afterwards. Midnight Special was another happy accident and highly worth watching. It was not at all what I was expecting and I am glad for it. Idiocracy is more like a documentary sent back in time 500 years to warn people about the dangers of staying on the current path and was done perfectly. I've lost count of how many times I've seen it and every time I notice something else that I missed previously. I (sadly?) use this movie to judge people. If they tell me they "don't get it" I know so much more about them than if I had asked them any other question. Dredd...there is nothing else to add here other than it is just amazing. Blows me away every time and it was done perfectly. Very disturbing at times but it is all necessary and none of that over-the-top sci-fi tech nonsense. Down and dirty, grit in your teeth reality and very plausible. Sunshine...another hard to watch movie at times but well worth it. Brings up many difficult thoughts and feelings and often it is hard to be introspective. It shows us aspects of ourselves we might not want to see. Under the skin was...creepy, and it changed my outlook on a few things. Might be a bad thing but I look at people differently and try to find hidden motives. Not everyone is as they appear on the surface. You have to look, well, under the skin to see the real "them". Moon was a VERY slow start but well worth hanging around for. Upgrade is a must see. If anything it did a great job at showcasing the dangers of just giving in to technology and how it is leading to the loss of our humanity. Much more than a simple action film. Very powerful underlying messages if you're willing to look and pay attention.
I agree. It’s a nice slow pace sci-if with a great payoff and very likable caricatures. Fantastic camera work and it takes place in the 50s. Good recommendation.
Vast of Night is to science fiction, what Ponty Poll is to horror. Both are excellent exercises in minimalism, and far better than most genre movies with high budgets.
Great list! There's one movie I would definitely add to this list: Prospect (2018) with Pedro Pascal and Sophie Thatcher. Absolute gem of a sci-fi movie. Very unique atmosphere, great cinematography, script and actor performances.
Turbo Kid is my jam. I love how they went on made 'Summer of 84' after that which is so different but also amazing. Dredd is top tier and it sucks that we never got a follow up. Sunshine, I wish I could go in blind on that movie once more. Def the most underrated flick on the list.
Lol I watched Turbo Kid on a whim ages ago and was NOT ready for the gore, since it seemed like a quirky 80's vibe movie. I'm not a gore fan at all, but I actually do remember enjoying the movie. Dredd took me by surprise since I had heard near nothing about it and thought it must not be that good. I've watched it at least twice now and think I might go watch it again since it's been about 6 months or so.
I was stunned by Under The Skin. I suppose it is an art film but I honestly thought it was brilliant and terrifying at the same and the plot really is easy to follow. Glad you included it!
I was reading the book that was the basis for that film, and it is quite different, it is explained why those people are collected, and what are those aliens... But the film has its value, it is a very good film.
@@ozymandiasultor9480 In a few other places I've read that the book is way different from the film. I must find a copy of it. Meanwhile, there are cat videos that I must now watch.
Thank you for your hard work and thought creating this amazing list. I LOVE movies like these but find it so difficult to weed through everything that’s out there these days and hate wasting my time on flics that aren’t worth it. Extra thanks for sharing the streaming services where we can find them. These are exactly my kinds of movies.
being a sci-fi nerd I'm all about this list! and shame upgrade doesn't get enough love - as far as scifi action with a twist of body horror flick, this is story wise on par with something like total recall!
“Upgrade” was one ☝️ of those that when the credits role, you’re like “damn” and also your appreciation of it will grow the next day, because you’ll still be feeling it & thinking about it.
Nice list. I have seen quite a few and have added the ones I haven’t to my list. Since 2001 was the year, I feel there was one glaring omission….Donnie Darko. Although it has attracted a cult following, it went under the radar due to the timing of its release’s proximity to 9/11. It never grossed "big" dollars in theaters and video releases, but definitely has the Sci-if and Time travel components…plus being a little trippy.
that crab battle at the end.. it was epic! And did you know they made a tv show based on limitless? It was done in a really innovative comic book style and had massive comedy chops. :P
@@ioncladstudio2688 that's interesting, first I thought you mean another but rather scifi comedy movie with a crab battle - Love and monsters (2020) there was also something captivating on the music score by Marco Beltrami... and thanks for the tip for the Limitless tv show, will check
The only movie missing here was Prospect. One of the most bizarre sci fi films of the last ten years, with an incredibly charming Pedro Pascal leading us through the surreal world of interplanetary prospectors
Is that the one with the father-daughter team searching for some mineral on a planet with air that's only semi-breathable? I saw one like that, anyway.
Film recommendations are always welcome, thanks. I would add the awesome "Iron sky" (2012) to the list, though I don't know if it qualifies as underrated.
I'd say so.. it's theme and campy imagery turns off the less imaginative.. so most people.. both of them were campy b movie genius with amazing effects put out by maybe 20 Russians in a small indie studio.. yet.. it's easily comparable to many hollywood films with hundred million dollar budgets.. Plus.. it's always worth it to see lizard hitler riding a t-rex.
Jesus! “The Fountain” got my girlfriend so depressed she cried for hours after seeing it. And then in a middle of her work day I sent her the soundtrack as a prank and that was priceless! 🤦🏻♂️
I would like to add the following to the list: Happy Accidents - very trippy romantic comedy indie sci-fi. A Dog's Breakfast -comedy about a scifi show and a murder. Many cast from Stargate Atlantis are in this. History of the Future Folk - movie about alien invasion and music. All three of these are awesome and fun films.
OMG, I watched Happy Accidents YEARS ago and loved it. Very strange little sci-fi romcom and made me fall in love with Marisa Tomei all over again. Reminded me of KPAX (the book) but with less romance.
Of everyone I know that has seen The Fountain, I'm the only one that liked it, sadly. Think it's just a bit too abstract for most people. Definitely VERY underrated, and truly visually stunning
just what I needed also very nice when a list video actually puts the list in text form as well so it is easy to come back to. you did everything right so I'm gonna do the things that encourages the algorithm to support you 👍
Great selections! I think Timecrimes is the best time travel film I have seen. It manages to handle the obvious paradoxes very well and is easier to follow than the also very good Primer.
You totally missed the true highlight of Dredd. The photography was simply exceptional. One of the most beautifully shot movies of the last 20 years, coupled with surreal psychedelic slow motion, it never got the appropriate recognition.
"Upgrade" was MUCH better than I was expecting the first time I saw it. It had heart and action and very good effects, and the acting was spot on... and the plot had nuance and twists without straying too far from a tried and true revenge story. Best movie ever? No, but it's better than most by a wide margin, and the people who made it earned my respect. 8.5/10
Not to mention that it was made on a budget that was less than what it cost to cater a normal movie production. I think it was so excellent (excellent enough for me to precure a hard copy) movie and it was written so well that i had to rewind the last 30 seconds to completely understand the ending.
Saw this video a few days ago. Bought The Fountain off Amazon. It arrived a couple days ago and just watched it. Your comments are spot on. Still trying to wrap my head around this stories’ symbolism. I’ll have to watch it a few more times. Thank you. Subscribed.
Thank you! Great list and I agree with everything except that somewhere, I would have added, maybe as an honorable mention: Upside Down (2012). The effects are eye-popping, but they do not overshadow a very good, romantic original story. I LOVE a *good* time travel movie, and I trust your judgement, so I paused your video and ordered Predestination. I am very much looking forward to it. The Fountain reminds me of Slaughterhouse Five, which I didn't like overall, but enjoyed the sci-fi scenes so much that I cut them into a separate 10-minute short. Midnight Special, was as good or better than most big-budget sci-fi films. I loved it. Primer, I have seen five times (which is a prime number!), and it is FUN and excellent. Good, coherent story. Just love it. LOVE, LOVE. You have good taste! Time Crimes is phenomenal and Moon is a perfect choice for the top of the list. Thoroughly entertaining.
I saw a thing where the directors spoke about how they made it. None of the actors knew the whole script & were given knowledge of their character & some key parts of the scene. It was very interesting. Also, really enjoyed it. I'd like to see it discussed on @flickconnection
The Fountain is one of the most underrated movies. If Aronofsky got the budget he wanted for this movie I can't even imagine what we would have got. Glad to see it on your list!
_Primer_ is, for me, THE best sci-fi movie ever made... The concept and plot/story are SO solidly brilliant (with side-plot details tweaked), that for me it transcends even the best-of-all-time sci-fi films, in the strength of its idea and storyline, _despite_ its extremely low budget, poor production values, and relatively poor/flat (though well-attempted) acting. I _so pray_ for the day that it's remade, PROPERLY. I would love to see Nolan do it, perhaps! And also: WOW - I had NO idea that the guy who wrote Primer, also wrote f'ing Sunshine...!! Incredible. My second-favorite sci-fi of all time has gotta be The Martian. The story is a compellingly real-world/real-science "impossible" human challenge, and actually absent any real bad-guy role; the opponent/antagonist was solely the infinite pressure on him to logically surrender to his (and his situation's) hopelessness - he had to maintain hope and vigor, despite being marooned on fucking _Mars._ An amazing experience and extremely rewatchable, for me - and perfectly conceived and written... and produced and directed, etc.
Great video, loved seeing "Timecrimes" included, I've recommended it to many. Also, thanks for NOT including fantasy movies as Sci-Fi, i.e. Star Wars garbage. Let's put science back in Sci-Fi!!!
I pushed all my friends to watch idiocracy when it came out. The most memorable response I got was, “why did you make me watch that? That’s the stupidest movie I’ve ever seen.” 😂
Did they not notice we're living it now? Hahaha - Joe Biden...JOE BIDEN, the stupidest man alive, is the president and lots of people pretend there are more than two genders and that "trans!" is an actual, real thing. It's hilarious stuff.
Damn, awesome picks. Thanks for a few that I hadn't heard of. Yeah, to me, Sunshine is one of my favorites, along with Primer and Moon (also a top-notch candidate). Upgrade too.
Predestination was an excellent movie based on the Robert A. Heinlein novella called Attention All You Zombies. I remember watching The Fountain, but don't really remember anything about it. Moon was an excellent movie and I quite liked Upgrade.
The Fountain was a love story about life and death, with the conquestidor and floating bhudda....Predestination was the most well made and produced, well developed story.....Moon is NOT underrated, Upgrade was poor production value!
@Xissrfo Heinlein wrote another story with a similar theme almost 20 years before " '--All You Zombies--' " titled "By His Bootstraps." If you can find it, you might want to check it out. It's not as elegant, but it's as convoluted in its own way.
I absolutely loved Sunshine! Thank you for focusing on that lesser known Danny Boyle gem. For me, it is better than Interstellar and on par with 2001 and Gattaca, another two of my favorite Sci-Fi movies.
If it's not been said already, Alex Garland also directed Dredd. There were issues early on with filming and according to Karl, Alex took over and directed the film. It was very similar to the time that Kurt Russell ended up directing Tombstone.
Awesome list, I've seen all of these except The Fountain, which I've wanted to see but had totally forgotten the name of! A couple that I expected to be on this list are Frequently Asked Questions about time travel and a fairly recent one (2017) Time Trap.
Time Trap is surprisingly enjoyable - good shout. If you enjoyed other Darren Aronofsky films then you'll probably like The Fountain. I didn't enjoy the The Fountain, but then I haven't enjoyed any of Aronofsky's films haha
The second half of Melancholia (2011) is gorgeous, depressing, haunting science fiction. The first half is just gorgeous and depressing. Apollo 18 (2011) is creepy and looked fantastic. I would also mention Europa Report (2013).
Very good list; well done. Especially glad to see Primer getting some love; it is simply the best time travel movie ever made. There's nothing else even close.
I'd have put Children of Men on the list. Amazing dystopian film with two of the greatest long cuts in cinema history. Also Dark City but that might be too old. 100% agree on Moon; one of the greatest Sci-Fi films ever.
One of my all-time favs is Time Traveler’s Wife… the plot continuously weaves elegantly in, out, and even through its own weaves. My compliments on mentioning “Moon,” awesome movie. I was surprised not to see GATTACA, but then I realized its popularity (your list is about hidden gems)… and finally, an incredible drama: The Cold Equations (1996).
Great list. Nice to see Primer and Midnight Special get a well deserved mention. One suggestion, is 2019's "Captive State", featuring John Goodman in a straight/dark role.
100% recommend that one. Was a fun watch and was caught off guard by what was happening at the very end as I thought I'd been following pretty closely. Well done film.
Great list, loved all these movies. Predestination was so crazy, Timecrimes is probably my favorite time travel flick. The only couple of films I haven't see here are Safety Not Guaranteed and Idiocracy.
I really like Safety Not Guaranteed. I've watched it 2 or 3 times so far and will certainly watch again. Idiocracy is okay, but Don't Look Up is much better (ie sci-fi comedy movie about people being idiots)
I never know where to begin with sci-fi shows, they vary in quality so much, and sci-fi seems to get cancelled more than any other genre. The BBC (in the UK) are great at coming up with unusual and interesting sci-fi shows that get cancelled after 1 season
@@251TheMechanizedSingfantry That really sucks! Highly recommend Netflix for science fiction series. Yes, of course, they do vary in quality, but I've seen some interesting ones.
I have two lists to add (below): 1. Popular, but still over looked: Monsters - Realistic sci-fi road trip movie with great acting by Scoot McNairy. A gem. Spektral - Netflix mix of sci-fi and supernatural, but in an action movie. Surprisingly good. I am Mother - Netflix straight up good sci-fi film Children of Men - Incredible big-concept film, brilliantly directed. Packs an emotional punch. Source Code - Loved this. I don't think it got the praise it deserved. 2. Indie films easy to miss by definitely worthy of this list: Repeat - Fantastic sci-fi indie movie with great acting, emotional heft and a brilliant twist. Another Earth - Emotional slow-paced, but so worth staying to the end. The Sound of my Voice - Low budget sci-fi time-travel film. Not what you expect, but will have you hooked to the end. And if you're still reading this, my favourite sci-fi is actually a tv series: Travelers. (Easily missed, but totally worth it)
Not _exactly_ time travel, but my favourite in that sort of field would have to be _Memento_ by Christopher Nolan. Had to watch it three times before I got all of it :)
I enjoyed "Safety Not Guaranteed". And your description of it is spot on, without giving away anything important. I also saw Primer. Pretty confusing, but interesting.
Really awesome list ! Predestination and Primer are smart and fantastic movies. Under the Skin moved me a lot, it’s sad and beautiful. Moon is great too! Time crime is an all time favourite too! Got to watch it again ! Thanks!
I do not know quite what this says about me, but I have seen most of these films. "Dredd" is fantastic, one of the best adaptations ever. "Idiocracy" is a favourite: Friends and I have talked about how uncomfortably close it is to reality. "Moon" and "Predestination" I have recommended to several people. Both "Safety Not Guaranteed" and "Timecrimes" were surprises and worth watching. One other movie I would call attention to is "Coherence": It stuck with me for quite a while after I saw it.
Predestination is a fantastic movie that, in my opinion, is vastly underrated and needs to be better known. Well worth your time and effort to find and view .
2002: EQUILIBRIUM with Christian Bale is a MUST SEE movie that is still highly underrated... "Tread softly because you tread on my dreams"...very relevant given the real dystopia we are heading to.
My "guilty pleasure" is time travel movies, so I've definitely watched the four you listed. I particularly love indie time travel movies. For anyone who loves them, Predestination, Safety Not Guaranteed, Primer and Timecrimes are on my must-watch list. Some others I recommend: Synchronicity Frequency - Not exactly time travel, but communication across time See You Yesterday - Just suspend your disbelief that a high school student could build a working time machine Time Lapse - Not actual time travel, but communication across time The History of Time Travel - A "documentary" about time travel. Time Trap - Even the characters don't know what's happening and have to solve the mystery as they live through it. Paradox Run Lola Run - Time loop without a time machine. 11 Minutes - Not the best movie on my list, but an interesting concept because of a fixed duration on this time spent in the past on each trip. Counter Clockwise - Not a great movie, but it explores a time traveler changing the timeline and dealing with the repercussions on himself.
I do watch Sunshine on occasion. It also features an admittedly overused track, Adagio in D Minor, but it's still powerful if you immerse yourself in it. Definitely heard of Turbo Kid, and I'm pretty sure I watched it? Not 100% certain on that though. The Fountain was a bit of a slow burn film, as I recall. Definitely felt a bit enamoured with its own visuals. I think it was better than Cloud Atlas though, which was a somewhat similar film. I'm not sure, it has been years since I've seen either, and to be frank I wasn't especially keen on either. Saw Moon as well, though I don't remember the specifics of how it turned out, I do recall that I saw it coming, which probably spoiled it a bit for me?
Pretty good list. However, the most underrated sci-fi film, not just of this century, but of all time, is Cloud Atlas. It is an achingly beautiful film with flawless acting, directing, cinematography, music, everything, and it has never gotten one one-hundredth of the respect it deserves. It also happens to be the finest film made by the Wachowski siblings. Yes, even superior to their masterpiece The Matrix.
Have seen 10 out of the 14 (listed) you recommend. Have to agree they are all amazing yet underrated films. Will have to try and source the others as in Australia we don’t have the streaming services available as in the US. 👍
Excellent list, thanks for posting this. There's a fair few I've not seen and I've been looking for a good beefy menu of tricky troublesome but good films to push my daughter with. Bravo.
I’ve watched MOON about 30 times. Something just comfortably sad as well as the humor filled bits, I just love it as a late night go to. It’s also just brilliant and unique sci-fi.

A classic film imo

Good flick!
Good one!
It's now one of my comfort movies.....might go watch it now
So THANK YOU!
One of the things I love about these lists is searching the comments for movies that other sci-fi nerds love. I found several I'd never seen.
Yep, me too, managed to find 3 films to watch. Here are some that I'd recommend:
Brigsby Bear (2017)
The Frame (2014)
Gentlemen Broncos (2009)
Europa Report
And yeah :D
*Hypertesseract Insanity* is a great film, but it's only available in an alternative dimension.

Aye; this is a great movie. I've watched it several times and it is always amusing, very clever and the time travel does not step on itself.
That movie, along with Timecrimes, shows that when you have ideas you do not need special effects to produce a good flick.
It would mine, great movie.
I was going to recommend this one as well.
ALso a favorite of mine.
An unknown and underrated film that I stumbled upon a couple of years ago is Time Trap. It's not big budget, but the idea is fascinating and gets my imagination going every time I watch it.
Agreed.. the myth of the fountain of youth combined with incredible unsuspected time slippage was a trip.. made me wonder about what happens to people who just disappear without a trace..
that was a masterpiece.. such a novel script. :)
that was an ODD one, holy :D
Stumbled across Time Trap scrolling through Netflix a few years ago. Was genuinely impressed and surprised.
Dredd is by far a must watch. It's violent, but in line with the comic's
It's a great movie. It's a shame it's thunder was stolen by The Raid
Agree. Urban nailed the character, unlike Stallone.
In all honesty, I prefer the original Judge Dredd with Stallone. The newer Dredd is good, I just like the open world of the original than just the mega city of the second.

Solid list. I’d add The man from Earth as an underrated sci-fi but not in the traditional sense. Well worth a look.
Now I really enjoyed that film, but its a stretch to call it sci fi isnt? fantasy maybe.
That was an excellent FLICK CONNECTION, Darren. I’m glad you selected Upgrade as your #1. Outstanding recommendation. Many thanks for sharing with us and take care. Looking forward to further presentations for 2023 👍👍👍
Totally agree with Sunshine. Great actors and production values, especially the background music 👍
Did a review of it on my channel if you're interested!
I've seen Sunshine a couple times but I don't get why people gush over it.
Upgrade is a legit number 1 on a fantastic, underrated list. The unique action sequences make it a joy to rewatch too.
Loved that movie!
I'll say it here again
Upgrade should have been the 21st century Knight Rider, with the movie showing "Karr" origin and then have a Tv series with a "Michael Knight" having "Kitt" ride in him.
You could even have seasonal upgrades of Kitt and Michael with cyborg stuff.
My friend and I went in that movie blind, and screamed how good it was afterwards.
Love that it’s the better Venom film. Hopefully the tv show gets made
"Upgrade" ...is that Belgian?
Nice list. Dredd, Upgrade, and Turbo Kid are incredible!
Regarding "under the Skin" - reading the novel (from which the film deviates quite a lot) is definitely worth it.
I think The Vast of Night should be on the list too. Its hell of a scifi movie and deserves more recognition.
Thanks for another must watch recommendations.
Is this just a nostalgia piece, or does the storyline pick-up after the beginning?
As I've seen all the movies on this list, I'll be sure to check out your recommendation. Thanks!
A very solid list...indeed a lot of underrated gems especially "Sunshine", "Time Crimes", "Under The Skin" & "Moon". Again they are ALL good movies.
I was stunned by Under The Skin. I suppose it is an art film but I honestly thought it was brilliant and terrifying at the same and the plot really is easy to follow. Glad you included it!
The beach scene was one of the best ever.

I LOVE movies like these but find it so difficult to weed through everything that’s out there these days and hate wasting my time on flics that aren’t worth it. Extra thanks for sharing the streaming services where we can find them. These are exactly my kinds of movies.
Moon & Sunshine, I've seen both a couple of times; there's always something you miss in great films.
being a sci-fi nerd I'm all about this list! and shame upgrade doesn't get enough love - as far as scifi action with a twist of body horror flick, this is story wise on par with something like total recall!
Also worth checking out 2010 movie "Monsters" and "Limitless" with Bradley Cooper.
I wouldn't personally say Limitless qualifies as underrated, but absolutely a fantastic film
that crab battle at the end.. it was epic! And did you know they made a tv show based on limitless? It was done in a really innovative comic book style and had massive comedy chops. :P
Seen both and you are correct, well worth the time and effort.

I would like to add the following to the list:
Happy Accidents - very trippy romantic comedy indie sci-fi.
A Dog's Breakfast -comedy about a scifi show and a murder. Many cast from Stargate Atlantis are in this.
History of the Future Folk - movie about alien invasion and music.
All three of these are awesome and fun films.
History of Future Folk is so fun. The soundtrack is great too. I actually listen to them on some of my playlists.

It is stupid as to how ignored "The Fountain" has been. Grotesquely underrated.
Agreed. There’s a ton of mythic symbolism in it that can go over some people’s heads, but it’s such an enigmatic film
One of my all time fave’s
Of everyone I know that has seen The Fountain, I'm the only one that liked it, sadly. Think it's just a bit too abstract for most people. Definitely VERY underrated, and truly visually stunning

Great selections! I think Timecrimes is the best time travel film I have seen. It manages to handle the obvious paradoxes very well and is easier to follow than the also very good Primer.
I love that film. A friend of mine thought it was a tragedy. I think of it as a comedy. We're both right.
Time crimes shits all over Primer. It doesn't get enough attention.
Is there anything else on that level?

Shane Carruth (Primer) did not write Sunshine; that screenplay was by Alex Garland.
The audio in Primer is obscene. It would be worth it remake it only to add a clear audio track. Great scifi, tho.

The fountain is definitely one of those movies that ends up feeli like a fever dream that you can never remember
The Zero Theorem should be on this list. Terry Gilliam at his stylistic and strangest best.
It's good, but for me, Brazil will always be my favourite Gilliam movie
If it's not been said already, Alex Garland also directed Dredd. There were issues early on with filming and according to Karl, Alex took over and directed the film. It was very similar to the time that Kurt Russell ended up directing Tombstone.
As in the author of 'the Beach'? wow, that's cool.
One of my favourite movies - and the score, ah man the score is sublime.
Awesome list. You should consider doing a list of the best and underated sci-fi from the golden age. 50s through 70s.
The second half of Melancholia (2011) is gorgeous, depressing, haunting science fiction. The first half is just gorgeous and depressing.
Apollo 18 (2011) is creepy and looked fantastic.
I would also mention Europa Report (2013).
If you like your sci-fi with a heavy dose of horror, Event Horizon (1997) is an all-time classic
There was so much stunning imagery in "Melancholia". I was disappointed not to be able to see it in a cinema with a really big screen.
Sunshine is one of my all-time favorite scifi movies... Worth every minute of watch-time... over n over again!
it's got electrolytes.

Spektral - Netflix mix of sci-fi and supernatural, but in an action movie. Surprisingly good.
I am Mother - Netflix straight up good sci-fi film
Children of Men - Incredible big-concept film, brilliantly directed. Packs an emotional punch.

Another Earth - Emotional slow-paced, but so worth staying to the end.
The Sound of my Voice - Low budget sci-fi time-travel film. Not what you expect, but will have you hooked to the end.

I think you mean the 4D version. It changes with time, too, right?
@@freewheeler8924 Never knew it was in 4D. I do remember watching it in 3D.
@@KevThrawn85 Never mind.
Loved "Coherence".
Equilibrium is hilarious.
It has serious "teleports behind you 'nothing personal kid'" energy.
Good call.
My "guilty pleasure" is time travel movies, so I've definitely watched the four you listed. I particularly love indie time travel movies. For anyone who loves them, Predestination, Safety Not Guaranteed, Primer and Timecrimes are on my must-watch list. Some others I recommend:
Synchronicity
Frequency - Not exactly time travel, but communication across time
See You Yesterday - Just suspend your disbelief that a high school student could build a working time machine
Time Lapse - Not actual time travel, but communication across time
The History of Time Travel - A "documentary" about time travel.
Time Trap - Even the characters don't know what's happening and have to solve the mystery as they live through it.
Paradox
Run Lola Run - Time loop without a time machine.
Sunshine is my all time favorite. The visual and plot are just amazing.
👍
Idiocracy is not a movie. Its a documentary.
Sad yet funny 🤣
To quote Metallica, "You know it's sad but true!" Smh

Primer and Sunshine are two of my favorite movies of all time - absolute bangers, both! Great list
Excellent list, thanks for posting this. There's a fair few I've not seen and I've been looking for a good beefy menu of tricky troublesome but good films to push my daughter with. Bravo.
Thank you so much for pronouncing Primer properly. I was gritting my teeth waiting to hear it called Prim-er instead of Prime-er.
Great list. I'm going to suggest Vivarium, Sorry to Bother You, and The History of Future Folk.
I’ve watched MOON about 30 times. Something just comfortably sad as well as the humor filled bits, I just love it as a late night go to. It’s also just brilliant and unique sci-fi.
An underrated movie I recently saw (I missed its release also) is "Time Trap". A unique take on the "time travel" theme.
