- How does the BMW Z4 and Toyota GR Supra share the same platform? What are the engineering methods behind platform sharing, and why would these companies agree to do that? These are some of the questions Automotive Engineer David Chao answers in this intriguing video about the Z4 vs Supra and their platform shared architecture.

Thank you David. I appreciate the clarity of all of your videos. Easily understood and always informative! I anticipate your next video with enthusiasm. As a "member" of the JM Family (Jim Moran) in Florida, I've become an even bigger fan of the Toyota/Lexus products.I currently drive a 2009 Lexus LS 460 w/36K miles. Cream puff! Acquired from the original owner in 2019 w/11k miles! I bought it as my forever car. And love it like a pet! Ride dynamics, build quality, features, everything about it! My quandary is, due to South Florida experiencing more and more serious street flooding, I may buy my husband's 2021 GX 460 w/13K miles when his lease is up! And sell the LS. Both are Tahara products with legendary reputation for reliability. Not a bad automotive quandary to be in!
I’m the original owner of a 2019 Miata. I’m reminded of the platform sharing between the ND Miata and the 2017-2021 Fiat 124. I rented a 124 and loved it; same platform but with a different turbo engine it had a totally different personality. Both are terrific.
David, two things really stood out for me. The interior is so eye-catching and attractive. The red interior really sets the BMW apart from the Supra. The additional height is another plus. Especially with objects in the roadway the additional height might help avoid damage to the undercarriage in some circumstances. Another BMW with beautiful paint.
I have the 2023 A91 Supra 6MT. The word I can think of is not only sporty, but rowdy. I havent even upgraded the power or done anything to it and the drive is very fun. I only encourage it as a weekend or fun car. Changing gears is something very special while driving.
You mention the B58 six cylinder engine several times in your video but the z4 you photograph is clearly the z4 30i B48 four cylinder version.
David, Along these lines you could do a Suzuki Sidekick vs Chevy Tracker comparison or Toyota Matrix vs Pontiac Vibe. 😁
With platform sharing like this - how does Toyota and BMW maintain parts inventory/maintenance warranty services? Is that serviced via a particular separate supply chain? Or do they run them in parallel?
Did Toyota update any engine parts suspension or any other changes besides body structure
Great video!
I thought BMW has had their own roadster for about 30 years so wouldn’t the Z4 have existed whether the Supra did or not ?
It is said that BMW would not have continued the z4 into the next generation due to it being a very low seller. To develop an entirely new sportscar platform would not have made sense, until Toyota came into the picture
Also,
Toyota: Can we use your Z4?
BMW: Sure! If you let us look at your Mirai.
I'm gonna have to pass on this Supra. I mean its pretty fast with a 0-60 of 3.9sec but its basically a Z4. I want something that will actually last so LC 500, IS 500, or RC-F would make the most sense as they are just as fast and a lot more reliable than the Z4.
thanks David. beautiful car but too small for me at 6'3
When does contract with BMW ends? Toyota should takes back the Supra!
Co developed platform
You know when things are perfect they tend to get boring that's why I love nissan
They are imperfect but it brings a character to them
Also they made the 400z all by themselves nissan has this ability to you know keep coming back
Nissan z is old platform and performance is poorly compared to Supra also Nissan had vr30 engine developed in their infiniti lineup so they just used that motor nothing new also Toyota has no current i6 however they do have v6 twin turbo used in Lexus which they should have used but probably didn’t because b58 is more mod friendly and Supra is a car to mod
The Supra car is an attractive design. The BMW is hideous-way too complicated-looking, inside and out. I don’t know what happened with that company; they seem to have lost the plot.
The bmw looks won’t age well
@@Yoknapataphaw totally. It’s already flash-in-the pan styling. Don’t know what they’re thinking.
BMW makes for China now, the so-called “worlds biggest car market”.
Old BMW is dead forever. Let them rot and buy something else
I think the opposite the BMW looks beautiful the Supra looks too transformer look. I would take the BMW.
I feel the exact opposite which is why I bought the Z4 and spent $15,000 more to avoid the ugly Supra
