    NEVER ,NEVER , use RTV with cork. You can use whats called gasket tack to get the gasket from moving around before putting the pan back up under the vehicle. Its a contact adhesive designed for placing cork gaskets. RTV is only used where recommended by manufacturer, never will you see it used with cork and never should it be used with cork. It makes it slippery and doesn't seal as intended.The only place RTV is used in most applications is at the timing cover or crank seal joint between a rubber seal and the cork. Thats it.

    If your gonna use RTV on all of it also. Its wise to put a thin coat on. Put the gasket on and press it down to squish the RTV flat. Then clean off any that pushed out to the inside of you pan before bolting it down. Any loose RTV reeks havoc on filtering and flow systems. That said. Other than where gaskets meet. Gaskets are designed to not need RTV.

      They purely use it on Toyota oil pans, but I think gm and ford say this because DIY’rs put way too much. And I guarantee many people that do not read instructions. Just another 2 cents.

    • @automedic9781
      @automedic9781 5 років тому

      It depends on the vehicle and type of oil pan. Some use a regular gasket. Others use RTV or other silicone based sealants depending on the manufacturers recommendations.
      Just because one Ford/GM vehicle says not to use it on that one doesn’t mean that a different one won’t have other instructions

    Great job! I see that you applied the sealer to the engine block, then placed the cork gasket on top of it, then you applied the sealer again to the top of the gasket. I was thinking to do exactly that. it makes perfect sense. The only thing that bothers me is since this way you have four surfaces glued together: engine/gasket/gasket/oil pan. If you did not use the gasket ,applied
    sealer only between pan and the engine, you would have had only two surfaces glued together.
    I do not know what to do now, gasket or no gasket, new cars seem not to have any gasket, manufacturers even use glue, there so many youtube videos on this subject I am all confused.
    Sometimes having less choice is better, like in the old days just cork gasket and grease that is it. Anyway I will do what you did, as I said it made perfect logical sense.

    • @dons1932
      @dons1932 3 роки тому +3

      FYI you only typically want to do no gasket just sealer, only when you can guarantee a perfect machined surface. Most new cars that only run sealant have alloy blocks and / or sumps, so they are machined well, better than the pressed tin stuff.

    FROM FEL PRO: In the case of most Fel-Pro® oil pan gaskets, they are to be installed dry. When installing PermaDryPlus® and PermaDry® gaskets, they must be installed clean and dry. RTV is only necessary at the “corners” or where there may be a stepped area such as an RMB retainer to block joint. Keep the following in mind:
    Adhesives should only be used on “paper type” or cork/rubber type gaskets.
    No adhesive will stick to silicone.
    Molded silicone gaskets must be installed dry.
    Adhesives or RTV used in excess can potentially get into the crankcase and oil galleys and cause engine damage.
