Why I Chose Ellen Over a Professional Interpreter

  • We're taking you along with us through the process fixing Ryan's hernia, a health issue that has prevented him from going 100% in the past. Ryan and I wanted to show you what it's like for us as a Deaf and Hearing couple going into the doctors office. Does he have me interpret or request an interpreter from the hospital? These are things we have to consider. Thanks for sharing about your mental health in our previous vlog. I know many people are struggling with their mental health right now and it's great that we're talking about it! Love you! See you next week!

    Hello Sign Duo! 🙂 Have you heard of *community captions being removed* soon?
    I am appalled by this decision since I rely on this tool for my educational videos, but I find it much worst for the deaf people because I imagine subtitles are an essential element for them.
    Let's be honest, not all UA-camrs take the time to make decent subtitles so why would UA-cam even think of removing this option???
    I write you this comment because you guys create very inspiring content about deafness and maybe your message to UA-cam could go further than mine as a very small UA-camr.
    Thanks in advance and keep up your good content!
    (please like this comment if you are in favour of UA-cam keeping community captions available)

      This is horrible. Why would youtube do this. Is there any type of petition that can be made so that this doesn’t happen

    • @lynn858
      @lynn858 3 роки тому +18

      Google/UA-cam’s explanation is here: support.google.com/youtube/thread/61967856?hl=en
      Getting them to change their mind is not going to happen. The best course of action, as I can see, is to ensure that all creators who could benefit need to ensure that at least 3 videos of theirs use community caption services (even if you open it up and ask someone you know to submit) in the 60 days prior to the Sept 28 end date - because that will qualify the creator for 6-months of human captioning services paid for by UA-cam as compensation.
      Obviously auto-generated captions have a lot of problems. 1) they can’t handle any type of accent 2) they’re useless for words that are uncommon, technical, or in another language.
      A further issue is that human edited captions, edited by people who don’t know the subject matter - particularly if it’s technical, historical, or borrows terms from other languages - are mostly just guessing. Few companies pay well enough on flat rate projects for captioners to verify highly specific technical terms - whereas a volunteer who’s interested in the subject already knows, or is happy to learn more by figuring it out.
      Editing auto-generated captions for accuracy is generally quite do-able. Ensuring that the captioning is up to the best practice standards and correctly captions relevant noises, auditory jokes, groups text into optimally understandable blocks, knowing when to cut a speakers verbal tics to enhance readability but not remove the personality, multiple speakers interrupting each other... that’s a whole other level. But it’s interesting, and I’m glad I took the complicated road. It’s really making me think.

    • @madalena9834
      @madalena9834 3 роки тому +5

      Maybe they can edit words into the video once community captions are removed?

    • @lynn858
      @lynn858 3 роки тому +11

      ashton c. Captions aren’t going anywhere. No worries! The program will still create auto-generated captions for all videos based on the spoken words. And the creator will be able to create their own captions by typing them out, or editing the auto-generated captions to correct them.
      The issue is that creators who have been relying on volunteers, who are usually fans they don’t know personally, to assist with providing corrected captions, and add captions related to sounds - will no longer have an interface for fans to provide that. The ability for volunteers to provide captions in another language is the same interface, so that’s gone too.
      Creators will still be able to send the video to a company which does captioning - and theoretically they will provide more accurate and standardized captions - but, it costs money, and those captioners, are not experts on the subject matter in the video.
      A video like this wouldn’t suffer. The word hernia is probably the most obscure, and it’s in my auto-correct dictionary. A video on historical dressmaking techniques which names materials and techniques, or theoretical mathematics which includes names of little-known theorem named for the person who proved it... and any number of other topics tend to suffer. Assuming the creator can absorb the cost of a captioning service.

      This is terrible! Really! I’m personally a deaf high school students and captioning is really helpful! It helps me understand words that seem confusing or I don’t under stand their voice, I use a cochlear implant so that’s why I can hear.

    Genuine question, if you’re drunk, does sign language “sound” drunk?

    • @RosheenQuynh
      @RosheenQuynh 3 роки тому +60

      I don't like alcohol and wish people didn't drink it but... that is a fascinating question! I don't sign myself but I'm sure that it would be hard to do so correctly because of the loss of fine motor fuctions so it'd probably be like talking in broken English because not every word is being signed correctly (I mean, it does take mental power to do so, after all). That's just my theory anyway, I'm probably wrong!

    I’m a nurse at a hospital and honestly, I personally prefer when someone of the patient’s choosing translates for them. Whether it’s ASL, Spanish, Russian, etc... our video interpreter is honestly a hit or miss, depending on the individual translator. I feel like there’s still a lot lost in translation, it’s awkward, and it’s yet another stranger being made privy to the patient’s personal business. I just want to make sure my patients are comfortable and feel like this happens more easily when a family member or close friend translates.

    Ellen, it’s good that you’re sharing those moments when you felt so defeated with anxiety and whatever other mental problems. People need to see that it is normal and that they are not alone. There are options out there to deal with mental problems. There is no need to be ashamed of it. Also, if there’s anyone out that is suffering from mental health, we need to do our best to help and guide them. To be their hope and be willing to be a part of their journey, and help them get professional help.
    Ryan, I hope you have a speedy recovery after the surgery. I’m sorry to see that you’re in too much pain. It will soon be over after the surgery and you will be back to normal.
    Java is such a cutie. She is so smart and so lovable. Well, I guess it’s cuz she has good parents, who give her love and train her well.

    I just wanted to thank ya'll for your youtube channel. When I went to community college, I took four semesters of ASL. I was comfortable with having a fairly basic conversation. My first teacher was deaf and we didn't speak in the classroom it all. It was totally immersive. Years since, I sadly haven' really practiced.
    However, right now my husband and I are learning ASL together, and it's honestly really cool. It's all coming back to me very quickly. We both enjoy learning new things and it's so fun to do together. More than that, I like knowing that if I'm ever in a situation at work where I'm interacting with someone who is deaf and communicates using ASL, I'll be able to make that interaction a much more positive experience.

    Glad you’re both doing better (or at least that Ryan is one step closer to better. Hernias are not fun. And mental health is also something that is important to look after and not something that gets talked about enough.
    Also, Java is still cute as ever.

    I have never seen sign language in a UA-cam video. I like this a lot. It is so cool that he trusts you to interpret for him and I think sign language looks so cool also. I would like to try to learn.

    Awesome video! I hope that Ryan gets surgery soon and has a safe recovery. Ryan, thanks for sharing why you use Ellen for interpreting. Ellen, I understand what you mean about talking more about your mental health and what you're going through, the better you're able to move on and look to the future. That's true for me because I didn't talk about my mental health for a long time. The moment I started to open up with a friend or whoever, I noticed that I started to feel lighter. So I kept talking and implemented tools that help me to improve. My mental health is the best it has ever been in years.
    I really appreciated you opening up about your mental health. It's fantastic that you're doing a lot better, forming better habits, starting to be less stressed and put less pressure on yourself. :D Also, that you're just enjoying being in the moment more often and taking care of yourself. You're amazing, keep being you and you do what's best for you. :D

    I work at a community health clinic in an area with a large Spanish speaking population, and while we do have interpretation services available, we also allow patients to choose to bring a family member or friend with them to interpret, even now while we generally only allow the patients to come in and no extras. It’s all about the patient receiving the highest level of care; if they are more comfortable having a trusted person interpreting, then that’s what they deserve!

      I noticed you used the sign AND, my teacher normally tells us to avoid the sign unless you're signing PRODUCE (the F-R-U-I-T AND V-E-G version), is this because you're speaking at the same time as signing? Or do you sign a different version of ASL (SEE)?

    My dad had a hernia and it caused him constant pain. I’m sure Ryan feels very much the same. I hope that the problem can be solved and he can be back to feeling his 100% self! ❤️

    I just found out about you guys through a video " now this " when you had to go through that not so good experience at a drive through. Its really sad that most people dont know ASL or at least the basic signs. I remember how I struggled when I moved to the US and didnt know much English. Ellen i love how much you care for Ryan. God bless you guys. 💐💐💐💐
