That's part of the reason we have sign language when our voices can't work all the time (scratchy vocal cords, etc.) If you know ASL you have a backup.

That reminds me of the time I woke up after getting my wisdom teeth removed. I was actually relatively clear headed, but my mouth was full of gauze. I tried to ask the nurse where my mom was, but she warned me not to try talking. So, right off the bat, I asked again in asl. The look on her face was priceless. 😆 she was very nice and apologized that she still couldn’t understand me.

Ellen, I don’t have Instagram so this is the first I’m hearing (reading) this. It took me back a decade ago to when my cousin had a similar accident on his bike and fractured his face, eye sockets, nose, skull. Basically his entire face. Took him months to recover and a couple of years to get back to normal. I’m glad yours wasn’t that bad. .grt well soon. btw, I joined a couple or so months ago. And practicing my ASL. Got to use it at home depot the other day. 🙂

    • @SignDuoChannel
      @SignDuoChannel  5 років тому +46

Will S Hi! Oh no! That sounds so horrible. I'm glad your cousin eventually got back to normal, but wow. This new experience of having a fractured (I've never had one before) has made me more sympathetic to those who have had injuries. It can get really scary. Thank you so much! Yay! Keep on learning ASL. I ran into someone who knew ASL at home Depot too. It's in one of our vlogs. Lol I guess home Depot has a few employees who know ASL. 😊🤟🏻💕

I always wonder how people deal with fractures. I have brittle bone disease so I break and fracture from laughing sometimes, so a lot of times I don’t go to the doctor when I fracture because I know they can’t cast it, etc. it’s bad for me to be in casts because it makes the bone weaker. Plus I fracture ribs quite a lot. It takes a lot for me to go to the hospital and even then it’s after a solid week lol. It’s very interesting to hear people’s stories and realize that fractures/breaks are important & scary for most people.

holy shit, reading this just made me realize, 12 years after the fact, just how lucky I was when I fell off of a bike at 11. Apparently I hit a big rock and actually flipped through the air (I had no memory of this immediately after the fact, waking up in the middle of the road seconds later- for some reason no one went and got their parents or my mom?? thanks guys) and landed in the road. Amazingly enough all I did was break my shoulder (specifically the growth plate in my right shoulder which, surprisingly enough, has not actually caused me any noticeable problems after healing). I didn't get concussion or anything even though it was one of the only times I wasn't wearing a helmet (it was a friend's bike and I was just planning to ride up and down the street while waiting or something), and I almost certainly hit my head. Reading what happened to your cousin honestly made my tummy knot up in horror of how bad it could have been. I'm glad he's doing alright now, that's fantastic!

I'm soooo glad there wasn't to serious damage.. You look like yourself Beautiful and Shining self ⭐✨that maybe can still use a little rest in her own nice comfy bed with Ryan. ❤ Just snuggle up and take a nice nap finally being home and actually relax..
I've had my experiences with being in the hospital/ the hospital bed, nurses coming every two hours to check your vitals ect..I understand that part..Unless you had enough sleeping maybe snuggle on the couch with nice soft blanket something warm to drink and watch a movie together something to cheer you up and stop thinking about it.. And can I just say that was so cute and sweet when he gave you his hat and put his hood up.. You Really belong together..Again I'm Sooo Glad your ok and it wasn't to serious. I thank God your ok..🥹😊🥰🤟

Yes practice our signs. Earlier today I watched a program about “barista signs” (coffee, tea, can I help you? What do you want? What’s your name?) and so on. I might use them in unrelated conversations - since going to Starbucks isn’t my jam. Ellen I’m so glad that your home, and that there wasn’t any brain damage.

In 2015 my right vertebral artery slightly tore on me during an amateur boxing bout. When it happened I remember seeing my opponent's waist on down and couldn't see from waist on up. I ended up beating him by points, but I went completely blind about the last 30 - 40 seconds of the final round. (It was one heck of an experience punching in complete darkness trying to guess where my opponent was). *Yes I do I have video of this bout, but will NEVER post it publicly*
When the final bell rung, I had no clue where I was, which way was up, down, left, right, and I completely lost my situational awareness of where things were. I simply stood there as my coach kept asking me, "What's wrong?" from my corner as I realized I was completely blind and I told my coach when he grabbed my left arm.
The drive back home was a long and terrible experience because the car felt as if I was at sea rocking back and forth in a storm. I threw up a lot in garbage bag while going home. Over the next three days while at the hospital my hearing, taste, touch, and smell went over level 9000 to compensate my inability of sight. To this day those four sense are about half of where it was when I was blind. I remember feeling helpless while blind because I didn't know where the restroom was and pissed all over myself (I was 5 feet from the bathroom door from what my nurse told me when she found me. Bless her heart, I later learned she cried her eyes out when the head nurse told me later that day).
I also remember when I started to regain my sense of sight. The first thing I started see while slowly regaining my sight was white and black like when your TV cannot find it's signal (it was on a Tuesday at 11:41pm when the head nurse woke me up and told me the current time). I could see the outline of things, but it wasn't all too clear. The colors red and green were next, but I mistaken red for orange (this was on a Thursday). Later that evening my sight of color came back, but I noticed my sight looked as if it were shattered glass for my left eye, and my right peripheral is completely gone forever. It took months for my left eye to completely recover from the shattered glass effect as my right peripheral remained the same. Bright white light seemed to burn my eyes as if I was a vampire for next few months which made my life miserable. Even the sunlight made my eyes burn in pain so I wore shades during the day.
My doctor told me if I were to tear my right vertebral artery again, there's no chance of recovering my sight again for my left or both eyes depending upon future head injuries or if my ability of sight fades out on me someday. He also recommended me to learn how to read and write in braille for the future (which I did and still do today, I'm currently learning ASL now). I've also accepted if I go completely blind in the future; I will train myself to become Daredevil from Marvel's Netflix's series. >:D >:P because why not...
I'm glad you're doing well, and that Ryan did the right thing at that time when he looked at you.

Deaf people can talk ya know.. they could just say they are deaf but that they need an ambulance. But places that have texting as an option are awesome for helping people who cant hear or speak.

They have a new system/ making one where they would text 911 or use a videophone to call them which is like a big tablet so they could sign to whoever answered the 911 call.

Very new to the sign fam, so just seeing this. Took me three times to finish watching this...it sounds so scary and brought back some bad memories...also didn't help that I was eating lol.
But anyway, I love to see how you two support each other! I only know how to fingerspell and a few signs, but I was able to pick up on a few things as you were signing!

A friend and I took ASL classes together, and it came in handy when we were at a noisy bar. 🙂 He's since moved away and I don't have anyone to practice with, so I forgot almost all of it, but I did recognize some of Ellen's signs for words I had learned.

Wow! That's more than I expected. I'm sorry to hear that Ellen. But, I'm glad you're better. When I got my wisdom teeth out, I had to sign to my mom since I knew I couldn't talk while having gauze pads in my mouth and under anesthesia. And that happened during my spring break during my senior year of high school. And at the time, I was taking ASL 2 in school
