That bit about facial expressions being tone of voice of deaf people is soooo interesting. I’ve noticed that deaf people are usually very expressive with their faces but I never thought of it that way before.
I want to know the experience! I just aced my first sign language class and I feel confident understanding the teacher and my peers and you two but there is a deaf family that comes into my store and I can never understand them. Luckily they’re very patient and kind to me.
Kaitlyn Gilchrist sometimes just have to get used to certain signing styles. Sign language is my primary language and sometimes I don’t understand deaf haha
I might be alone in this, but I would LOVE a video on how Ryan learned to mouth words when he was younger! I can't even imagine how a speech therapist would approach that when the student can't hear the sounds that the letters make... Was it very difficult to memorize the mouth positions for different sounds without having that context? ❤️
Just noticed that I can understand what Ryan saying just looking at his lips movement (like lipreading) and even(sometimes) hear his voice (even if he's not speaking, just the way he using his lips, air noises???), so when I'm reading subtitles and looking at his lips at the same time and it just complete his speech perfectly. I'm not the only one? (I hope you understand) Love you guys, and so proud of you two. Keep going!
I have a question. When Ryan reads, does he “hear” the words in his head like a hearing person does? Not all the time, of course.. we look at words all day and don’t “hear” them, but for example when you’re reading a fiction novel and the narration is in your head.
Sign language written out when you’re learning it in a class setting is so much different than English, that’s why it’s considered its own language and there are different variations of it
I've heard a little about this- basically, your 'internal voice' is used for a lot of things- remembering things you've read earlier in a paragraph/book, formulating your thoughts, processing emotions, etc. It's actually a vital part for many parts of your internal processing. Deaf people's internal voice tends to be in sign if it's their first language or the language they feel is their voice. Obviously this varies if they grew up hearing and became deaf, or if they are partially able to hear, etc. If they never learn sign, and can't hear enough for their speaking voice to feel like 'their' voice (if that makes sense), they may not have an internal voice and can suffer in some of the areas the voice is used for, most notably reading long texts and remembering as they go. Hope that helps!
I’m profoundly Deaf from birth and I can confirm that we can ‘hear’ the word in our head whilst reading (It varies with Profoundly Deaf people). When people speak whether we hear them (in my case with my hearing aids) or only lip read (or both) we associate the word we read to what we have perceived it as either via hearing speech and/ or seeing sign language! It all depends on factors such as; our learning opportunities (speech therapy & school), how hard we’ve worked to be able to understand, hear and use the English language & literature to a reasonable/ good level, family background (beliefs & culture) etc so it really does varies. Hope this helps! 👍
I love how Java has her head on Ryan’s chest most of the video, undoubtedly, listening and feeling his heartbeat. Very good points on communication, love your explanation of your experiences. If Ellen wants to share her story, we will listen with open minds and hearts. 🍃💞🍃
I think this is a great video not only because it’s so eye opening to the complexities of signing and communicating with people with different languages but also just about communication in relationships. Absolutely beautiful
Question: I am a server. Is it annoying or appreciated if I try to do some signing to communicate- knowing only very basic signs? What are your suggestions, both in your own experience, for approaching and trying to be social when communication is very minimal??
Not related to your question but related to you being a server. In one video, they mentioned how servers always hand the check back to Ellie, even though Ryan was the one who gave his credit card to them. So just hand it back to the deaf/HOH person if they were the one paying.
@@gloriaguo229 oh, yea. That would be rude on 2 accounts. I was taught to read the name on the card and hand it back to the appropriate person. Tho.... One time a man was named Kim and I didn't know who to give the card back to.... Lol (A decade ago, I was taught to hand the check to the male- always.... But times have changed in that aspect)
@@Stranger_Strange_Land I by no means know anyone who is deaf/HOH, but I think they would probably appreciate it if you used some basic signs to communicate. Or, you could (as they mentioned in another video) ask the hearing person/interpreter (if there is one) to interpret what you’re saying to the deaf/HOH person, but maintain eye contact with that person, not the interpreter.
I don’t know any sign language (yet) but watching your videos just shows the love between you two, and it’s amazing how comfortably you two communicate! You really inspire me to educate myself on the deaf community, and to learn sign language, whether that’s Dutch Sign Language (where I live), Finnish sign language (where my family’s from), ASL (for international communication), or Japanese Sign Language (I’m a Japan Studies major). Please keep on going, you guys are so fun to watch!
It's amazing the level of understanding and communication you guys have with each other. I know so many hearing couples who don't communicate nearly as well with one another. You guys are relationship goals!
I noticed that Ryan drives most of the time. I'm just wondering, do you feel confident driving alone? Since you cant hear other cars honking or can't hear ambulance or police sirens? Btw, love your videos, very informative! A fan from the Netherlands :)
They made a video on this. Idk if the video was out when you asked this question. Edit: the video was not out when you asked the question. Edit: Here is a link to the video: ua-cam.com/video/0-mamQEMxzc/v-deo.html
I wonder how challenging it must be for deaf people with autism, because my family has a history of autism and they struggle with understanding a lot of non explicit context
i’ve been watching your videos for about 2 years and everytime i watch i always try to learn at least one word. its helped me so much. i’m of course not fluent but i’m able to communicate with the deaf. Ryan And Ellen thank you both so much please do not stop what you’re doing. love you both.
I LOVE you guys! I will be honest, when I first stumbled upon your channel I had a lot of assumptions - some not very respectful - about your relationship. But I basically just binge watched ALL your videos and have learned so much about the Deaf community and gained such an appreciation for your relationship outside of the hearing/deaf aspect. You guys are SUCH goals. Don't ever quit making videos, I need to live my love life vicariously through y'all
I don't know aslfluently for when I'm watching deaf people sign I understand them completely because it's almost like you have to have common sense or an imagination to imagine what they would be saying if they were using word with a voice! I get really frustrated when I'm trying to communicate back because I don't know all the signs but I'd make them up as I go and most of the time they can understand me because we're on the same topic!!
You guys are the cutest couple! I love you guys! I love that you spread awareness about deaf culture and using sign language. Sometimes I use these videos to learn ASL. You guys have inspired me to try and learn ASL so that I can be an interpreter or just to communicate with someone who is deaf/mute.
I know that this is HIGHKEY un-relatable to all my deaf and hard of hearing peeps but y’all’s videos are straight up ASMR. (Sounds that are nice and pleasing, kinda like the sound equivalent of feeling a soft blanket or popping bubble wrap!)
Hi!! I’m a kindergarten teacher and my kids are learning how to sign the songs Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Silent Night to perform at our Christmas program along with our other songs. They are loving it and having so much fun learning the signs! Love your channel!!
I just subscribed today & I’m thrilled to have a new video to watch already! I’m a freshman in hs & learning ASL. This is the first year my school’s offered ASL as a foreign language, and I’m in love with signing! My teacher is deaf, so for an hour and five minutes every week, I’m completely immersed in deaf culture as my teacher doesn’t let us talk, only sign. I plan to learn as much ASL as I can & I might even want to become an interpreter! Your channel is amazing, & I’m learning a lot from you two! ❤️❤️❤️
I love that your beautiful relationship is at the foreground of all your videos and sign language is just integrated into it. More than just sign language, you’re showing us that communication is more than speaking and furthermore, how vital it is that as human beings we find ways to understand one another. You’re relationship is a great example of how WE CAN reach the point of understanding one another even if you don’t know the language or culture, it’s the genuine interest in someone that makes for a safe place for us to educate ourselves and become better human beings. Best to you both! 💕
I am hearing, I picked up some sign from an interpreter friend a few years back. I now have a deaf coworker and just watching your videos have helped me remember more signs and practice! This has helped our communication at work and I’ve seen her open up so much🤟🤟🏼
Ryan, this may be a silly question, but I was wondering if you could describe a little about your dreams. Do you hear noises in your dreams or are they silent? Another question, I know some people who are blind that describe their experiences differently in that some see absolutely nothing, others see flashes of lights and sequins at time, etc. I was wondering if the deaf community is the same way? In that each person is a little different? Or maybe that would be considered hard of hearing then if they were able to hear anything/certain pitches? I'm so sorry if any of this comes across as offensive or inappropriate to ask, I'm just trying to learn and I'm so intrigued by this culture! (I know this was long, maybe these questions can be in a separate vlog?) Love you guys, thank you for teaching me so much!
Why did I just find this channel randomly? Why didn’t I find it sooner? In the few hours I’ve been catching up on their lives, the dog has grown. I’ve learned ways that could end fights for any relationship I have, and I am happy they have been together for so long. So many questions and thoughts with this channel ❤️
learning ASL for the first time, and I knew I wanted to be intentional about the language as well as the culture. Your channel's added context related to deaf culture really helps! THANK YOU.
I 💜your videos. I am deaf in one ear and partially deaf in the other. You guys are so inspiring and I have convinced others to watch your videos so they can start knowing and understanding sign language. Thank you for helping me and my friends. 💜💜💜
Im a hearing person and ive been taking asl classes for almost a year (as a hobby, not in school or anything - just for fun and out of pure interest). Im pretty comfortable with the amount of vocabulary i know and recalling it when I'M signing but now im working on my recieving skills. I just found ur channel today and ur videos seem to be really helpful and are well produced. SUBSCRIBED! (Also im a hopeless romantic and am in love with you two #couplegoals)
That’s the Tustin market place! That’s so cool that you guys are so close to me. I took ASL for 3 years in highschool and have started to forget it since I have nobody to practice with. When I use to work retail I’d use it to speak to customers who were deaf and I lovedd being able to lend a helping hand to them. I wish I had somebody to sign with !
Me and my girlfriend are both hearing couple but I feel like I can relate to you guys in lots of ways. I speak English and my girlfriend speaks Korean, we're in a long distance relationship for 3 years now, so we had not only huge language barrier but cultural barrier as well.
Whoa! That is so fascinating! When you mentioned you learned your partner's facial expressions and body language first and then the sign language helped with a more complex or deeper communication, I never realized how little I paid attention to those things.
I got use to doing that when I went to a foreign country where I didn't speak the language very well, You really do rely on gestures, body language, facial expressions a lot, even after 20 years living in a different country, I still find that it helps me and is second nature to pay attention to those, even though now I understand the language.
I’m an ASL 2 student and going to ASL 3. I watch your videos daily and making a lot more friends who sign and Completely agree how it’s not just about the signs but everything else as well ! You guys are great 👍🏼
Such an informative video! Thank you for sharing! My brother and his girlfriend are learning sign language and they’re learning so fast! They love it! It’s great that we can communicate through sign language now! I introduced your channel to them and they really like watching videos where you teach signs. They really enjoyed where Ryan taught how to sign Numbers 😁
I feel like I can relate with the way my parents and I speak Cantonese to each other. I was born in America so English is my first language but my parents speak Cantonese to me at home. I'm familiar with the way they speak it but when I meet other people, like extended family members that I am not familiar with, they often use different vocabulary that my parents have never used with me and so I have a harder time understanding them.
That makes so much sense. I find myself looking at your body language and face more in thr videos because I've already read the captions and I'm looking to see how you're expressing those words 😊
Facial expressions were the most important part of ASL classes when I took a few many years ago. As a hard of hearing person myself (who didn’t grow up signing) reading lips, body language and facial expressions are much more important than the actual words one speaks. As a side note, if I watch your videos just before bed, like I am tonight, I end up signing in all my dreams! Love that! Lol G’night all!
I'm mostly impressed that you can spell and reading spelling that fast! If someone tells me the spelling of a word verbally, I really have to think about what the word is and literally pretend to write it down. It would take me forever. Very cool!
I just started watching you guys and have felt so motivated to get back into ASL. Also, The way Java is leaning is adorable. Haha. You guys are such an inspiration and an amazing couple and I wish all the best for you.
I dm'd you guys a very similar question about this on Instagram a few months ago, so I'm really happy that you guys made a video about this. :) Thank you for your content! Not only are your videos educational in the language aspect, but super helpful with learning cultures and daily lifestyle customs.
This is fascinating. Communication is interesting to me because I’m a writer. There are so many nuances in communication even when speaking - the often used comparison: “communication is 20% what is said and 80% what is inferred by non-verbal signs.”
You guys are such a great example of what a great resource youtube is!! These videos are so enriching beyond just learning signs! And again there is miss java being the most adorable 🐶
Question for Ryan: are you ever scared because of your deafness? Or have you before? For example, while driving a car you can’t hear what is happening around you. And I’m in love with your videos😍 It’s very interesting to hear how you communicate with each other. You are such a cute couple😍😍
This was awesome! Is it exhausting trying to learn other people language when you have interactions with other deaf people for the first time or so? just because you have to focus on body, sign etc all at the same time? Love how authentic and genuine you all are! My new favorite channel
I’m so happy I came across your channel! My daughter is hard of hearing, with progressive hearing loss. We are learning ASL as a second language as a family. Also, she LOVES Java and is now asking for a deaf dog (her school interpreter also has a deaf dog).
Hi 👋🏻 from 🇬🇧 I totally agree about not able to understand other Deaf person signing as we, in 🇬🇧 there’s lots of regional accents so therefore we have regional signs. (I’m Deaf btw) Java’s gorgeous🌸
Way back in the early 1990's I took a course in ASL. I have been able to see the odd sign I still know. I appreciated the story about " was Ellen Mad or just waking up " My closest thing to equate that to is , trying to communicate when the person is in the other room? I love all the videos so far. and I will be looking every Tuesday/ Weds for new ones. As always Be well and stay safe
Yes!! Please make that video that you mention at 10:20. You both are so motivating and inspiring for others who also want to learn ASL. I’ve been debating on whether or not I want to take ASL classes at my local university, but watching your videos make me feel like I really need to! My partner and I are both hearing and we want to learn ASL together so that we can communicate with those who may need someone to communicate to in times of an emergency, etc. thank you for creating this channel, and keep up the awesome content!!
You were in my suggestions, and I’ve been binge watching y’all. Such a cute couple & so educational for people like me who knows nothing about anyone who is deaf. ✨ subscribed!
I’m deaf, but have been mainstream since birth, receiving some form of speech therapy when I was 13 weeks old. This channel has made me want to learn sign to get more in touch with my deaf peers! Have a great day!
I am happy you made this video. Even though this was to answer a question someone else asked, but you also answered the question I asked from your last video. Thank you and your dog is so cute.
I'm am learning ASL and this is my 3rd year learning it and I love the language and seeing another person learning and knowing about the deaf world and community is amazing to see
I am so glad one of your videos was on my recommended videos list. I had forgotten why I loved learning sign language in high school. Thank you , both of you so much. I am going to start to relearn sign language now because y'all reminded me how much I love ASL.
I love that explanation that facial expressions replace tone of voice. That just clicked for me having watched many people sign over the years. I'm pretty sure my sister could still hear tone of voice when she was growing up, so it wasn't as important to change facial expressions with her.
Okay-I’m Autistic, and REALLY want to learn sign (partially because of my autism, I have mute periods), but all the talk about the importance of eye contact and facial expressions and everything makes me so nervous because that’s exactly what I’m terrible at in communication, due to being Autistic. So the part about interpreters showing up early and how normal it is that signers have to take a moment to get used to a stranger’s signing style is SO relieving to me. I can’t even say how much that calmed me down!
That's true. Learning and practicing the signs is one thing, but don't mistake that to mean you can communicate easily in ASL. Even now, I still have to adjust to the different styles of signing when I meet a new Deaf person, but when I am signing with my Deaf friends, it's easy, because we know each other and are intuit to our communication styles.
I would love to see more videos of you guys vlogging or interacting in public!! I am interested to see how often Ellen interprets for Ryan/does the ordering at restaurants, how people react to seeing you guys signing, how often people are willing to sign with Ryan or gesture if they dont know asl. Your video going through the drive thru was great and made me curious how other interactions go!
I surely am not gonna forget how to sign “communicating” after this video haha!

I have a question. When Ryan reads, does he “hear” the words in his head like a hearing person does? Not all the time, of course.. we look at words all day and don’t “hear” them, but for example when you’re reading a fiction novel and the narration is in your head.
tiffo this is a good question!!
I watched a BuzzFeed video with 2 deaf people and they said their "inner voice" was sign language.
Java is deaf tho...cant hear the heartbeats
Ooo yes I want the humbling story if it’s not up already!
You guys are the most in love couple I've ever seen. It's amazing how you two vibe.
I love that you guys are Sign Trio now 👍🏻😁
I think this is a great video not only because it’s so eye opening to the complexities of signing and communicating with people with different languages but also just about communication in relationships. Absolutely beautiful
can you explain your guys’s name signs for eachother?? I think name-signs are an amazing aspect of deaf culture.
Dying to know the story that humbled you! Please and thank you! :D
You guys are so amazing! I love your videos, and I'm so happy to see Java healthy and growing!
Aileen Christine thanks for the support!!
Lol
(A decade ago, I was taught to hand the check to the male- always....
You guys are relationship goals!
you guys are the only reason why i am learning sign language. i want to understand wat u guys are saying in the vids without captions 😊
This just made my whole day!!
Lol that turning off the light thing happened with hearing couples too because when your tired tone of voice can be really off too 😂
i’ve been watching your videos for about 2 years and everytime i watch i always try to learn at least one word. its helped me so much. i’m of course not fluent but i’m able to communicate with the deaf.
The way he looks at you when you're talking is so beautiful omg
Did anyone else get surprised when Ryan sneezed? I guess it’s because I’ve never really heard him make any noise 😄
Samantha Wickey of course, thank you for the support!
What was that humbling experience!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Explain!!! 😫😫😫😫😫🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏😂😂😂😂😂
You guys are great 👍🏼
you guys are the cutest and give such a comfortable vibe to the video as if im sitting with u guys
You guys have such an incredible bond. It's so completely obvious. I envy your relationship.
When Ryan said "I run this" I put my tail between my legs. 😂 He's so low key dominant. 😂
Right?
That makes so much sense. I find myself looking at your body language and face more in thr videos because I've already read the captions and I'm looking to see how you're expressing those words 😊
Facial expressions were the most important part of ASL classes when I took a few many years ago. As a hard of hearing person myself (who didn’t grow up signing) reading lips, body language and facial expressions are much more important than the actual words one speaks.
As a side note, if I watch your videos just before bed, like I am tonight, I end up signing in all my dreams! Love that! Lol G’night all!
I just love how authentic your videos are♥️
Nicole Tejera 😁❤️
Please make that video! Also I LOOOOVE Java being so cuddly!!!!
You both are an inspiration. I would love to pursue someone who is deaf but I’m afraid. Watching this video gives me hope.
I’m learning ASL 1 right now and sometimes it gets confusing, but somehow it actually really helps seeing it used in conversation. So, thanks guys!
You guys are such a great example of what a great resource youtube is!! These videos are so enriching beyond just learning signs! And again there is miss java being the most adorable 🐶
I've been married for 12 years and I can attest to being able to read each other's minds and already knowing what we will say about something. 💞
Question for Ryan: are you ever scared because of your deafness? Or have you before? For example, while driving a car you can’t hear what is happening around you.
And I’m in love with your videos😍 It’s very interesting to hear how you communicate with each other. You are such a cute couple😍😍
I can't get over the way Ryan looks at her when she explains. He looks so stupidly proud. It makes my heart swell.
Not only am I learning so much about you two, but I am also learning sign language! You two really inspire so many. ♥️🤟🏼
Hi 👋🏻 from 🇬🇧
I totally agree about not able to understand other Deaf person signing as we, in 🇬🇧 there’s lots of regional accents so therefore we have regional signs. (I’m Deaf btw)
Java’s gorgeous🌸
I can't even read the subtitles and pay attention at the same time
Way back in the early 1990's I took a course in ASL.
Ryan- have you ever met a deaf person you didn’t like?
Would also love to see a Q&A with your mom. ✨✨ have a blessed day
Ryan sounds so wise! Great video guys
Your dog is adorable. She really loves her Daddy!
Olivia Barnes you to Olivia 😁
I am happy you made this video. Even though this was to answer a question someone else asked, but you also answered the question I asked from your last video. Thank you and your dog is so cute.
I'm am learning ASL and this is my 3rd year learning it and I love the language and seeing another person learning and knowing about the deaf world and community is amazing to see
I am so glad one of your videos was on my recommended videos list. I had forgotten why I loved learning sign language in high school. Thank you , both of you so much. I am going to start to relearn sign language now because y'all reminded me how much I love ASL.
Awwww the dog loves daddy !!!!! Intresting video 👌
This warms my heart man she is a real one 💯🙏
Im learning sing language its fun to learn and its so cute that she learn sing language just for him thats a true love stay positive we love you
I would love to see more videos of you guys vlogging or interacting in public!! I am interested to see how often Ellen interprets for Ryan/does the ordering at restaurants, how people react to seeing you guys signing, how often people are willing to sign with Ryan or gesture if they dont know asl. Your video going through the drive thru was great and made me curious how other interactions go!
Enjoyed watching this! I know some ASL because my Mom taught me since she used to teach at the school for the deaf.
