Yep play the cards your born with, I know a guy who has cerebral palsy, he told me one of the ways how he plays the cards he was dealt. He carries a whole pocket of small change. When he goes to pay for something he counts it out SLOWLY, coin by coin, and he dials up the palsy to the max (his words) usually the cashier gets impatient and annoyed with him half way through and just takes what cash that's on the counter and tells him that's ok your close enough. Way to play your cards! Before you all comment that its wrong for him to use his disability to take advantage of people, well my response; enough people use his disability as a reason to treat him "less than" so use the cards you were dealt and play em the best way you can.
This is all a metaphor for life. Trust your instincts more often. Know when to hold em and fold em. Walk away and run. Life decisions, you know? He was pure genius in his words! The hope is we all have the luck of dying in our sleep.
Also worth noting is Don Schiltz wrote this with Kenny Rogers in mind... And submitted the song to Rogers people.. but it never made it up the good chain far enough for Rogers to hear it. Don released it himself. Rogers producer Larry Butler heard it on the radio and asked Rogers if he had heard the song. He had. After no one else charted with a major hit version, Rogers cut it! Don Schiltz himself considers Rogers version the definitive one!
People not old enough to remember him, don’t know that in the 80’s everyone wanted to record & perform duos with him. Great artists from Dolly Parton to Sheena Easton. He successfully crossed over late in his career
The lyrics are a metaphor about life not poker know when to hold them (example Good Friends)know when to fold them (example Bad Friends) know when to walk away (example From a fight)know when to run (example when the sh.t hits the fan).Kenny rogers another Legend in heaven. The Gambler finally broke even he died peacefully R.i.p
It astonishes me how many of the "react to music" people had this go directly over their heads. It's always seemed so obvious to me (that it was a metaphor about life). "I can see you're out of aces." Hell, I think we've all felt like we were out of aces at one point.
He made country music cross the borders of the United States, a unique label in his style, "The Gambler" the country style anthem and so many other hits, like not forgetting his movies. thanks to you in my country and in the world country music was known, feel proud americans for having had this legend and great artist Without a doubt, the legend, the king of country music, thanks for you beatiful music. RIP Kenny Rogers. From Chile.
Rest in peace Gambler! What a force that left this earth. I was five years old when this song came out, and I looked up to Rogers so much. Thank you for this reaction.
"And Somewhere in the Darkness, The Gambler he broke Even" We lost the Gambler May Kenny Rodgers Rest in Peace, my prayers go out to his family 💔🥀🌹 He passed away in his sleep at 10:25pm Friday night
This song was his biggest hit, for which he was known the world over. When traveling overseas, people who recognized him immediately referred to "The Gambler".
This guy was a giant in 70s and 80s and big in 60s and 90s. Everything this guy did for 20 yrs was a gi-normous hit. This song (and Rogers) was so popular, two hugely popular "Gambler" TV movies were made, starring Rogers (yes, he was a good actor). He was the only guy I knew in my 57 yrs who was popular with people from 15 to 75, with massive hits in both country and pop charts - for decades. Try "Ruby, don't take your live to town," next.

To me, this was the definitive Kenny Rogers song. It's a fantastic metaphor for life in general, not just for playing cards. Kenny was probably the greatest ballad-style singer, he just had that natural story-telling voice that made you want to just stop and listen to him.
Children go where i send thee with Kenny Rogers and home free try it when you have time it is so nice in,,,, A Capella thank you for your reactions, take care from Sweden
Great song, always liked it. The meaning of the lyrics not only apply to gambling, but to life in general. Also, when Kenny sings, And somewhere in the darkness The gambler, he broke even Means the old gambler died in his sleep.
We saw Kenny in concert four times. The last, a Christmas concert, in Atlantic City in 2014. He was great in concert. Loved interacting with the crowd. He had fun and his audience did too. Will miss him a lot. RIP and love to his family.
the title of the song was given the same treatment as Lean on Me and Stand by Me. a song that was given a movie adaption but unlike those two songs there was a series of five movies that all starred Kenny Rogers as the title character and I imagine all five had the same opening song and that's this song.
LOVE WILL TURN YOU AROUND is a favorite of mine. During my parents last years, before my Dad passed, THROUGH THE YEARS became their song. I can just picture Kenny and my Dad sharing their memories of that song now. Thank you for some great music🌈
That's my favorite, the gambler was always close second. Have you seen the movie Six pack? The song was off of that. It's a fun movie with Kenny Rogers, Diane Lane.
Somewhere in the darkness, Kenny Rogers he broke even. And he did, but not before leaving us ALL an "ace that we can keep". Good bye you wonderful singer.
One of my favorite songs...EVER! Such a metaphor for life and what beautiful lyrics. The hook has become part of the fabric of society. Folks who know nothing of the song say those words in everyday conversation. Luv your reactions! Plus, you are ADORABLE, btw.
Awesome! BTW Kenny was a guest star on the Muppet show and in the move "Muppets from space" there is a poker game scene and Pepe the king Prawn wins and as a little way of showing off, he sings a bit of that song-"you've got to know when to hold it.."
You are so wonderful! I’m a nurse. Your channel has been a great gift to me during this crisis our world is facing. Your joy, respectfulness, sincerity, and talented observations of music and different genres is a bright light in my day! Thank you!
A euphemism about life- much deeper meaning the actual gambling of money- “you never count you money while sitting at the table.” Never show your hand- in life- pretty much like, “don’t count your chickens before the hatch.” Good gambling advice, however, applied to living life as a whole- He left KENNY with an Ace.. of wisdom- 💖🤘🏼✌️
Just found your channel and have been binge watching your vids during lockdown - thank you! Great work and greetings from Scotland! Stay safe everyone :o)
Coward of the County is another sad but uplifting story told masterfully in song. Then there is Lucille, yet another sad but great song with a catchy chorus that gets the crowd singing along to it every time. A few of his other old school love songs (besides Lady) is She decorated my life, Through the years, She believes in me, We've got tonight (duet with Sheena Easton), & Don't fall in love with a dreamer (duet with Kim Carnes). Enjoy the journey down this rabbit hole. You won't be disappointed. :-)

The song was written about life, not gambling. Kenny said that he was never a gambler. He said he realized early on that he was never going to win enough money to excite him, but he could surely lose enough to depress him. His daddy had a hard life and after the war (WWII), he turned to drinking. Kenny thought it was probably because he wasn't able to properly support his family. So, he never was a drinker, either. We lost a great entertainer. May you RIP, Kenny.
Thanks for doing Kenny Rogers -- there's some good respect there. BTW, I just have to mention, I love your hair! You always do something gorgeous with it!
"Knowing what to throw away and knowing what to keep" It's funny hearing a 5 card draw reference now that everyone only thinks about Texas hold em when it comes to poker

"Every hands a winner, every hands a loser." It's not the cards life deals you, it's how you play them.

Heh, just typed that as well.
Should be noted that this was a cover and that Kenny did not write these lyrics.
@@kennet7837 yeah Don Schlitz wrote it, but his version isn't as good as Kenny Rogers who actually made this song famous

@Michael Harvey I think what's meant here is to focus on what you're doing and take stock of what worked and what didn't later on.
Another life lesson in there is how the key to survival is knowing what to throw away and what to keep.
@@ohauss i think it means that don't count the money yet bc you can still lose it. like don't count your chickens until they hatch type of thing.

This song says it all about life.
“She Believes in Me” is also a good one

Do Kenny Rogers' "Reuben James". I love that song. It never grows old.
brownie1341 Pretty much non of his First Edition songs, get exhausted 🤗👍
They were fantastic. Whatever he did, he did really well.
He had a lot of songs that do not grow old. I'm 53 and I feel lucky to have grown old listening to the great Kenny Rogers!
I've been asking all of the for that one too.
Life Lessons from Kenny... my fave one from him.
I feel that the Gambler was knowing he was about to cash out. To break even... he got lucky, and passed in his sleep.
Back in the sixties he was part of a group called The first edition check out their song "just dropped in to see what condition my condition is in.
The movies that go along with the song that Kenny stared in are good.
Masterpiece rip Mr Kenny Rogers
Great song, by a great man. RIP Kenny.
My favorite song is Love Will Turn You Around. RIP KENNY

Kenny didn't just sing songs.
He told stories in music format.
