@@AndyMumford It’s just struck me that there are quite a number of YT landscape photogs who’ve followed your lead and are now in the Fuji camp, but I’m not aware of any you using or doing a video where you shoot only Fujifilm film sims for a landscape shoot. Having just bought a second hand XE3 to see what all the fuss is about, I’m intrigued to see what would happen if you had that as a challenge. (Minor adjustments in post allowed - but clearly already on the jpeg only). (If you’ve already done this just point me towards whichever one it was.) 🤙

Thanks for the comment, glad the video was useful. Yeah, there's this idea that bright light has to be controlled, but that can really flatten the image. Sometimes really leaning into the light can bring out really dramatic images

There are plenty of videos around that show how you can make your own luminosity masks. Just do a YT search

It was really interesting to see how you processed that image Andy. I was waiting for you to lift those shadows across the farmhouse but have to agree with decision you made not to do so.
Thanks for the comment Allan. With such strong directional light as this I like to leave the shadows there as I think it gives the image greater depth. As long as the details are clear I don't think they need to be brightened too much

Your images are so inspiring. Thank you for this short tutorial! I'm going to use this as guidance next month for capturing the Pinggan village at sunrise. It is located in the caldera of Mt. Batur, Bali. I also plan to try my first attempt to capture the milky way there. Btw, any plans visiting Indonesia again?

Just a heads up - in the beginning with the linear gradient - you used defringe instead of dehaze ;)

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. The parts outside where recorded with a DJI Pocket 2, which comes with it's own remote mic. It has a deadcat that comes with it. I actually forgot to turn the mic on for a part of the video, so it's done with the internal mics on the Pocket 2. The processing and composition part were recorded at home with a proper Blue Yeti Nano microphone into Adobe Audition, so the sound there is richer
Andy, another fantastic video!! Thanks very much for sharing your editing techniques. I've taken to using LR more and more and just leaving Photoshop alone but after seeing this video I'm going to investigate using it again. Especially after seeing the Luminosity panel. Could you please let me know which TKAction panel you use and maybe a link to get that one? I notice from that website that there are several different versions.
Thanks so much for the comment, really glad you enjoyed the video. I use an old version of the TK action panel, it's version 4. Pretty much any version will be fine as long as it has the different mask (Shadows, Lights and Lights) and the sharpening action, which is excellent

I don't have a lot of time nowadays for solo trips outside of workshops (which is where I earn most of my income), but usually try to have one trip a year. Later this year hopefully in Utah, last year I was supposed to be camping in Senja but COVID happened. Before 2017 though pretty much all of my trips were alone or with my wife.

I am currently considering going to the Dolomites alone. Your photos from the Dolomites inspire me to go to the mountains. But I'm not really convinced of that yet, solo traveling isnt mine😅

To be honest, it's not really a camera that's suits my style of shooting. It's designed for sports and action photography, so it's not a camera I think I'll review. When the high resolution XH2 comes out later this year then I'll almost certainly review that.

Third (just for curiosity): What the biggest difference you noticed when going from Nikon fx to fuji x (apart from the obvious size and weight)??
Thanks so much, and glad you found something useful in the video. As for the difference between Nikon and Fuji, apart from size and weight, it's just that I found using the Fuji cameras so much more intuitive, and they feel much more like an extension of my eye. That's purely personal though

Hmm. Interesting perspective. Has it ever been any doubt considering difference in raw data and image quality (if there are any noticeable differences) between the two systems to not not justify the switch?
Beautiful work. Was wondering how you tackle that worming effect that happens when you edit fuji files in Lightroom?
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. Well, this image was done with the GFX, which has a bayer sensor and so isn't susceptible to "worming".
However, having said that, when I edit with the smaller Fuji cameras with X-Trans sensors, it's never really been something I've noticed much or felt was an issue that I needed to tackle. I edit images from both cameras the same way
It’s odd how You Tube suggests videos. In this case it’s uncanny as I was standing at the same location most mornings last week from 5:00 to 7:00 am in the hope of some mist but unfortunately it didn’t happen but there was some great light if a little hazy. I have basically many versions of the same image you used in this video so will definitely try your processing ideas.
Thanks for the comment John, glad you found the video useful. This location works really well with just good light and a little haze (as was the case here) or with lots of mist, which we had the following day. I tend to prefer the shots with good light though

Hello Andy, outstanding job as always. I am trying to decide between C1 and LR; I rewatched your video from a couple of years ago about switching to C1, but it seems to me you went back to LR at some point later on. I also shoot Fuji, and I would love to know which one you recommend to invest on.
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoy the videos. With C1 or LR it really depends on which you find most intuitive to use. I've switched back to Lightroom because the updates to the masking system are excellent and I find it much easier to edit with. Images look better right out of the camera in C1, but I find it easier to get the look I want in LR

Hi Andy, great video and super images. Thanks. I have noticed that most workshops are offered around May, is that the time of year most conducive to mist? This is not a convenient travel time for me... Sept / Oct are best... how are conditions then?
Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoyed the video. May is the best time for Tuscany for a lot of reasons. Mostly because that's when it's at it's greenest and the fields are full of long cereal. There are also lots of flowers, and warm days/cold nights bring the best chances of mist.
By September/October it looks very different. It's the end of summer, which is hot in Tuscany, so all the fields are brown and harvested, so often it's just bare soil as opposed to waving green grass. There are also no flowers, and the warmer nights mean that mist almost never occurs.

Great video Andy - you were one reason I recently switched to Fuji! (The weight savings being a huge factor). Two questions - for this image, did you consider using capture one to edit or did you go with Lightroom for a particular reason? I’m just now learning captureone and haven’t determined if I should fully switch.
Second, I’ve noticed you shoot a lot around f8. Do you find f8 is often sharper than f11? I have the trusty 55-200 and the 10-24 but am still getting used to them. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the comment Ryan. I use Capture One less and less nowadays. Lightroom has gotten so good with it's last updates, and some of the techniques I prefer to use, like the light sculpting with the dehaze slider, simply don't work as well in Capture One.
As for aperture, f8 is the sweet spot for those two lenses. Actually, with the 10-24mm, f7,1 is probably where it's best.
@@AndyMumford Very good to know and thanks for responding! I do like how in Capture One you can get access to all the tools when creating masks (not sure why Lightroom restricts you there), but I have to say I haven't noticed much of a difference when comparing files in each. Thanks again ~
Great great video! some questions related to your last video of iceland. Did you have any problems with carry on backpacks going to iceland carring your gear? and what backpack did you use, capacity(lit)? the acelandair company, the max size of carry on is...55 x 40 x 20 cm, how was your experience with it? because i'm from Portugal i probably will have to take a 2 flights to get there. keep the good work. Hi Joao, glad you enjoyed the video. With regard to carry on, I never actually use my photo backpack as a carry on when I fly for exactly this reason. I use FStop gear packs, which have a removable internal camera unit where all the photography gear goes. I remove this from the backpack and carry it in a smaller tote bag, and the backpack is folded flat and goes inside my luggage in the hold. This way I've never had a problem and the bag fits comfortably underneath a seat.
Having said that, I've seen so many photographers take their camera backpacks on IcelandAir flights without any problem. It often astonishes me how many people are able to take large cases and bags onto planes, but I prefer not to have the stress.
Also, it's usual to have to go to Iceland in two flights, I usually go via Frankfurt or Manchester, but there is a new low cost Icelandic airline called Play www.flyplay.com which fly direct from Lisbon to Keflavik

bit confused. i remember you dropping down to the XT-4 and now i see you with a GFX 100s, a much bigger camera, size of a large DSLR. what is your main camera for Landscape ? i am eager to jump up to the GFX and have a Sony A1 and GFX 100s. each for its own purpose.
Hi Rob, I've been using the X series since the XT1 and I love the cameras. I use different Fuji cameras and lenses for different trips and reviews.

Hello my question is fuji recipes. Do they effect the RAW file? I just got into using RAW+Jpeg. So many 3rd party recipes. Thanks
The Fuji film simulations or any recipes don’t affect the RAW file.
Great Video, but in the first linear gradient, you are moving the defringe slider and not the dehaze tool.

With your Linear Gradient at around 9:05 you didn't use the Dehaze you used Defringe instead.

Is it still a photography?
Fuji users on UA-cam are strange. They went from DSLR til X-T2/3/4 for the smaller size. And then they upgrade to GFX with camerahouse and lenses much bigger than mirrorless full frame.
Well, I've had GFX content on my channel since the GFX50S first came out 4 years ago, and I still use the XT4 and XS10 (well, my XT4 broke when I dropped it earlier this year and I'm waiting on the new Fuji announcements later this month before I decide whether to replace it with the XH2 or wait on the XT5). I use different Fuji cameras and lenses all the time for various projects and reviews, and its "strange" that people find that strange.
I’ll never understand why people use three or four tools to do the same job. I guess it makes them feel like they’re working magic. Sliders, tone curve, calibration, plug ins. Under the hood it is all curves. Just learn to use curves.
It’s really not. While it’s true that most of the sliders, including thing like deglaze and sharpening, are just altering contrast on one level or another. The way that it applied, from micro to macro level, high pass etc (which isn’t controllable in LR) is very different. You simply cannot recreate it simply using curves.
And besides that, until about 2 weeks ago curves wasn’t available locally on a LR mask.
At any level in photography (or life for that matter), there are always different paths to achieve the same result, and instead of forcing everyone to do it the same way, it’s far better to give people different tools because what’s intuitive for one isn’t for another
