Excellent review. I had one for years and just recently purchased a replacement (the previous one suffered some abuse). One thing no one ever mentions in keyboard reviews is the spacing between the groups of function keys ie. the space between F4 and F5 as well as between F8 and F9. It is critical to help orient my fingers when I use those keys but it seems to have disappeared in recent keyboards for what I can only assume are aesthetic and design reasons. I really appreciate that this keyboard hasn't sacrificed that functionality for the sake of fashion. Also, the calculator button is such an underrated button, I simply cannot live without it.

I still use this keyboard occasionally and it is probably the best layout and features in a keyboard and mouse set for a long time. I find my productivity goes up when using it as my typing accuracy improves and your are right about the calc button. Especially during tax return season 👌🏼

This does feel more like a traditional desktop keyboard minus just one Windows logo key.
Still, that Power switch on the keyboard is also a nice touch.

I found one of these for $4 at a thrift store in mint condition and love using it so far. It looks like it was literally never used. Mine is the newer version with the updated logo within the past few years. I previously used their K120 and EX100 and I also have many mechanical keyboards, but this one is just so satisfying and has all of the right shortcut keys. Love it so far. Mine was missing the receiver, so I used one from another wireless Logitech mouse I had lying around and paired it to the keyboard using their software. I have been using it for all non-gaming tasks on my home computer for the most part.

I bought the mk270 in February 2015, still looks and functions just as good as the day I bought it. Only drawback is the 2.4ghz signal can be easily interfered with causing mouse n keyboard lag. I tried to use a friend's keyboard like that the other week after using a mechanical keyboard for the past 7 years and it was a weird experience. I'd never be able to go back to a membrane keyboard. As for the mouse, I have to use a vertical mouse to keep my carpal tunnel and arthritis from flaring up. Logitech makes a lot of good low priced products and this Logitech combo would be a great buy for school kids, or light home use. But not for someone like me who is writing 7 or 8 hours per day.

    • @mikesunboxing
      @mikesunboxing  6 років тому +4

GPR you are probably spot on there. Most people using this keyboard are likely to be casual users / gamers / media streamers. For some serious typing a mechanical keyboard is less tiring for prolonged use.

With Covid going on and work from home being the new norm, I dug mine out from storage. Although on mine the stand at the back that props the keyboard up had since gave-up crumbling into bits, I ordered a replacement set of stands from China for pretty much next to nothing, and now the keyboard is back in service! Mine is pushing onto 10 years old now, the bottom plastic was once white has now since yellow-ed, and the start menu key is still the old Windows Vista era logo with the orb, but all the keys still work great!

That difference in travel and resistance in the key groups between the main typing group and the function keys is no fluke. I had a K120 from new when I was in high school and it felt the exact same way you're describing it. Sadly my example developed a problem with inconsistent feel where some keys would jam when I'm in the middle of a fast session, so I let it go for an NMB keyboard around 2010. Still I was pleasantly surprised it lasted me about 4 years. I'm typing this on a classic Thinkpad and I'm in the market again for my new workspace. This time I'm thinking about going a bit more "upmarket" so I'm debating a MK345 against a MK545 but it's nice to see that they still make this trusty board.

Two quick questions about the mouse
1.) When you click the scroll wheel can it go from notched to smooth scrolling or is it only notches?
2.) Since both the mouse and keyboard are only $20, does the mouse feel cheap? What I mean by that is some older infrared mouses feel like the plastic is thin, hollow, and very lightweight. Does the Logitech one have some weight and feel decently made or does it feel cheap?

A word of caution regarding the batteries for the keyboard. Yesterday my keyboard stopped responding (the mouse still worked). I figured the batteries needed replacing since it had been a couple of years since they were last changed out. Turns out one of the batteries became corroded and it would not slide out of the battery slot. I had to use a screwdriver to pry it out. I then took apart the keyboard to clean off the corrosion on the terminal. Moral of the story: remove your batteries every so often (maybe once or twice a year) and check for corrosion.

Great review. I was searching for other info on the keyboard, specifically the PC Power Off button on the top. I despise that button because I literally use the keyboard on my lap. When I want to get up or I'm done with the keyboard, I usually pick it up w/ my left had to place it on the floor. And that blasted key is in the dead centre . Which means I power down accidentally at least twice a day.
I guess I'll need to dismantle the gadget and physically remove the button! But, again, great review. This is my 2nd Logitech keyboard/mouse combo. I spilled my coffee onto my K360 & had to retire it. Once I disable that Power button, Id give this a 5 star rating! Right now, I'm wavering between 2 and 3 stars.

But, and this may be because I have a Win 10 machine, Key Tweak did not satisfy this time around. It showed options for a Sleep key and a Power key. I disabled one and then the other with negative results.

In the United States, Walmart has the MK270, Logitech part number 920-004536, and another Logitech keyboard and mouse combo, Logitech part number 920-008971, that looks identical, and about which Walmart says "Compare with MK270." However they provide no way to compare them. The description and the specs they list seem identical, except for the keyboard dimensions, in inches, which they indicate are very slightly different, with the MK270 being 20.63 x 1.97 x 6.26 Inches and the "compare with the MK270" being 20.08 x 6.22 x 1.81 Inches. The images that they show for each are identical. That is, for each keyboard I opened an identical-appearing images in a new tab, and saw that they had an identical address. They used the same image file for each keyboard. I'm going to go down to a Walmart store tomorrow and see if they have any in stock, and if I can determine any difference.

@@mikesunboxing Alrighty. Typing on the Walmart keyboard now. Before I go into what I found, let me say what I found out about the dongles. Logitech has 2 types of nano dongles. One type works only with the particular keyboard or mouse that it comes with, and the other is a "uniftying" receiver that works with any logitech mouse or keyboard that will connect to a unifying receiver. The receiver, and the unifying devices that work with it, are identified by a little logo. If I get a chance I'll provide a link to an image of the unifying logo. With just one unifying receiver plugged into your computer, you can connect up to 6 logitech unifying devices.
If you go to Logitech's support page for the MK270, item number 920-004536, they indicate that there are 2 different versions, each having these same numbers. What they say about the difference is that there is a version with a unifying receiver and a unifying mouse, and a version without the non-unifying receiver, and non-unifying mouse. They don't say anything about the keyboard being unifying. They imply there is only one keyboard.
I went to one of the 4 Walmarts that is within 30 minutes by car of my home and saw that they had only their Walmart version of the keyboard. So I rolled down the road to a Office Depot store, and took a look at the MK270. They didn't have one on display. They had boxed items, in taped boxes. Nothing on the box about "unifying." No unifying logo. I got permission to open a box and take a look. The mouse did not have the unifying logo. The dongle did not have the unifying logo. I forgot to look at the back of the keyboard, or maybe I remembered, I don't remember. But perhaps it doesn't matter because it appears that according to logitech support page it is only the mouse and the dongle that are unifying. The keyboards in both versions appear to be the same non-unifying keyboard, even though evidently they must connect to the particular unifying dongle that comes with the the unifying MK270 combo. Anyway, I saw no reason to pay $7.00 US extra for the MK270 if I was getting the model without the unifying stuff and I rolled over to another Walmart where I picked up a 920-008971.
I unboxed my new Logitech keyboard, got out my magnifying glass, and looked at the tiny text molded into the keyboard and the mouse. So tiny it was even hard to see with the magnifying glass. On the back of the keyboard was the text K270. At that point it dawned on me that MK270 must mean K270 keyboard plus Mouse. Then I took a look at the mouse. In tiny lettering was "model number M-R0061." This is precisely the part number that Logitech's support site claimed was the part number of the mouse that came with the non-unifying-mouse-and-dongle version of the MK270 combo.
So there you have it. No reason to spend any extra money for an MK270 that was identical to the Walmarts logitech "compare with MK270" model. No I didn't feel like checking more retailers to see if any of them had unifying MK270s.
I am a touch-typer and I like this keyboard better than any of the other membrane and inverted silicone cup keyboards I have used. I like it better than the logitech that I spilled coffee on, I seem to recall it was a k120. The mouse is pretty fair. It has a stick-on label that says M185. It works similarly to my M325 but the wheel is noiser and clickier, the sides are plastic rather than rubbery, and it is lighter. The wheel has an up-down click switch, but does not have side to side switching capability like the M325. Also, it does not work with the logitech "SetPoint" program. There is a Logitech Options program that I got an offer to download either after the mouse drivers were automatically installed, or I ran SetPoint, I forget when. But this program has nowhere near the same mouse customizing ability as SetPoint. The keyboard, however, was recognized by SetPoint! SetPoint allows you to assign lots and lots of tasks to the Home key, the Email and the Calculator key, including the ability to run any program on your computer.
So in short the Walmart "compare with MK270" combo appears to be identical with the MK270 combo, but with the non-unifying version. And I didn't find any unifying versions in local stores. And looking on ebay and amazon, I didn't find any MK270s that said anything about being unifying. Could be some of them were and that the sellers weren't aware of it. Sellers frequently make errors in describing the product they are selling.
Oh, by the way, Walmart's published dimensions for the 2 keyboards are both wrong. The keyboard is about 44 cm long, which is about 17.4 inches, and is not 20.xx inches long. The box is not 20.xx long either. It is less about 19.8 inches long.

Yes, the combo receiver is older and lower class, but I wasn't intended to use it, I was hoping my existing G700 receiver (being superior and more sophisticated model) is capable of recognizing K270 keyboard, so I wouldn't even have to use the combo receiver in addition to G700 receiver...

Logitech makes quality stuff, I was using the original logitech elite keyboard from 2002 till 2015 and it was still in perfect working condition! Then I decided to try out these new gaming mechanical keyboards, I spent 180 euros on a corsair k70 lux keyboard. Talk about poor quality, in just two years of use, 4 keycaps disintegrated and the volume knob stopped working. Well that is the last time I'm buying anything 'gaming' branded. I actually got the old logitech keyboard used in 2009 for free from a friend. Damn I wish I still had it around, but sadly I threw it away once I got my mechanical keyboard. Such a shame.
Funnily enough, at the moment I'm using an old asus keyboard that came with an pre-built pc from like 2012 and it works really well, easy and comfortable to type on. Although the prints on the keycaps are pretty faded out. Office-use keyboards and mice are made for use, these 'gaming' branded mechanical keyboards are not.
Anyhow, I think this kb+m set could be good for my console, it's quite a drag having to constantly plug and unplug my keyboard from my pc to the console.

Although the Logitech k270 keyboard is the best of the membrane and upside down silicone cup type, that I have ever used, it is not what I would consider an ideal keyboard. For my taste, and ideal keyboard would have slightly lighter touch, and would have the feel of what piano technicians call a "let-off," and a let-off that occurs when you press down on a key, at about 1/3 to 1/2 way down at which point it becomes a bit harder to push, but once you have pushed through that point, called the let-off point, the key become easy to push again. Also, the character would appear at the precise moment you managed to get the key past the let-off point. The keys would be quiet. No audible click, only a tactile click. They used to make keyboards like this. Typewriters, manual and electric, like pianos, have an actual mechanical let-off _mechanism._ On a manual typewriter, you push down on the key and linkages push _up_ on the the hammer that smacks against the paper. The let-off point is the point at which the hammer detaches from the linkage, and it is _momentum_ that causes the hammer to continue toward the paper, rather than continued force coming from your finger. In a piano the hammer actually detaches, hits the strings, and bounces away, landing about 4 mm away from the string. In a typewriter it remains mechanically attached, via a low-friction joint, but the force between your finger and the hammer is no longer attached. The K270 has a let-off feeling, but it occurs way too soon. The key cap goes down just a whisper of a distance, may 0.1 mm, before you have pushed through the let-off point, and the force needed to push down becomes less again. At least it is not a noisy let-off. The somewhat cushioned, muffled noise that the key makes, comes at the point when the key hits the very bottom of its travel. The let-off itself does not make a click sound. I consider it to be good, that the let-off doesn't make a click sound.

    • @soilmanted

@@mikesunboxing I was a piano-tuner technician at one time, and in order to adjust piano actions to the liking of very fussy pianists, not to mention to my own liking, I had to be able grasp how the actions worked, in great detail. Later I learned that mechanical typewriters were supposedly designed in imitation of piano actions in some ways, and that this facilitated typing quickly and without mistakes. So yes, I know fairly precisely just what it is that enables the best control of a keyboard, by a touch-typist, and I became very fussy. For pianos I used a set of gram weights to measure the downward force applied to a piano key, at various points along its downward path, and to check to see that every key was the same. I learned how to get that to happen by adjusting all the pieces of wood, and wool felt, between the key, and the wool mallet, the "hammer," that strikes the strings. Piano manufacturers sometimes published specifications. While "nuance of expression" is not as much of a "thing" with touch-typing as it is with piano-playing, it _is_ important, at least, to the process of typing quickly and without mistakes. And typing quickly and without mistakes is important to expressing oneself verbally, in writing.
