    Really enjoying the series Peter , it’s so refreshing to have an a knowledgeable person like yourself explain what makes a cat stable or not in terms that the average guy can understand, thanks. Also really glad to hear that there is a possibility of Lisa coming back ,you and her are in my opinion are the perfect match and she is a great asset to the channel, fingers crossed

      Don't place too much emphasis on what was said in this video. When he doesn't even mention the weight factor in the Stability curve it's obvious he's no expert. Watch the Ruby Rose video on Stability for an actual experts take on capsize likelihood. A performance cat like the Mumby is much less stable than a Lagoon or Fontaine pajot for example.

    • @geoffstrebel2808
      @geoffstrebel2808 2 роки тому +2

      @@laurapitre5797 Even the screen cap for that Ruby Rose video shows a skinny hulled cat flipped on its side... I can flip a Hobie Cat over myself. It'd take the entire nation of Tonga to flip over a Lagoon/FP/Leopard. Be real. In a serious storm, everything is going to capsize, and no design considerations are going to affect that.

    Had the 'pleasure' of crewing on an Outremer 55 Light on an ocean passage. Total fkn rocketship mate. Exited the barrier reef doing 15 knots under full rig into the ocean swell, withing 30 minutes we had the boat completely airborne 3 times, big crash as it hit the water again. It took a couple of reefs in the main and rolled up a good portion of the jib to slow it down to less than 8 knots in order to get it to stay in the water. The repeated slapping of the bridge deck still interrupted our sleep. We nicknamed this boat the vomit comet, even the hardiest of crew who had never been seasick in their lives were chundering over the side.

    • @alansailing1387
      @alansailing1387 2 роки тому +5

      @@SAILINGintoFREEDOM The wind was around 60 degrees on the starboard side and the largest swell was also coming from the same direction. There was also a smaller swell coming in just off the port side. It was when the swells coincided at the right time was when the boat got airborne. The owner had the boat for 5 years and never been offshore and neither had we, although we had a bit more sailing experience than he did mostly sailing dinghies and trailer sailer's. I quizzed him about the lifting off and asked if this was the way he normally sailed the boat, and whether he thought the boat would still be in one piece by the time we got to the Solomon islands (from Cairns). He looked at me and said, I don't think so, lets slow it down.

    I am waiting for the lottery numbers to fall in and hand me som 100 million USD but in Swedish Kr of course since I am Swedish. Then I will be a sailor too! Until then I will really enjoy your building the Mumby series. I saw the talk you had with Zingaro on Mono vs. Multihull and you mention the Mumby there, after that I did some searching and stumbled up on the Jupiter channel and that Mumby feels like a really good choice. For me the building series going to be great to watch I actually like the repair and build contents more than the actual just sailing around content so I am really happy to have done a contribution for this however in the lower region but as I said in the start I have not yet won the damn lottery so a little is all I can afford. Best of luck to you Plucky and if you getting Lisa on the build that can be fun seeing your discussions on the building process and not only pineapple shortages.

    Hi plukky.,you don't need to jump in the water to get the centre line ratio,you just measure the bow centre to bow center on the deck at the front of the boat

      ...I just like being in the water... Are mini keels in line with the bows or center of bouyancy?...I don't know this but the hulls aren't symmetrical ... Not sure... You are probably right or they are close enough ie within 4 inches probably.... Anyone know the answers?

    Even though I agree with most of your information, I still own one of the production cats that you hate. I went into it knowing the compromise. I've sailed multihulls nearly exclusively for nearly 50 years, 14' to 84' including foilers, and appreciate what is needed to sail it safe. Basically, they don't give you the feed back when they're loading up like a monohull does and things can go south fast. It comes down to sailing ultra conservatively and knowing your boat and it's limits. Love your channel!

    • @SAILINGintoFREEDOM
      @SAILINGintoFREEDOM  2 роки тому +1

      True... But don't you think it's a pity that you gave up the speed? The Mumby is plenty stylish in side and super easy to clean because it is just one surface ..I know people on a big heavy cat and they spend 2 hours a day cleaning the damn thing...so many nooks and crannies and the joinery had to be replaced every 5 years.... Crazy

      @@SAILINGintoFREEDOM All true, but when she agreed to this “hair-brained scheme” my wife got final say on boat. All my criticisms of it’s particular model didn’t mean anything to her at the time, but now after 3 years, she gets what I was concerned w- inaccessible boom foot, high center of effort, dependence on Isenglass for protection at helm, segregation of crew between helm and cockpit. Still I wouldn’t have put it on the option list if I didn’t think the compromises were acceptable for us! Keep up the great episodes

    Great episode! Some thoughts:
    - Physics and math are the king! You might don't like it but it will decide about your safety.
    - Base on my experience on the performance cat the easiest way to make a tack is to do it fast when the bow is raised by the wave. When you find this moment you will know :)
    - Maybe you will find Bruce Roberts books about metal boats handy.
    Please continue this series and all the best!

    Hey Plucky nice one! I have been a big fan of the Mumby for many years too. I spoke to Tim a while back but he couldn't be bothered to follow through to build one for me. He wants to stay small and has enough on his plate. I respect that. I am looking at building one in Brazil...but the price of aluminium had gotten through the roof now. Anyway I wanted your opinion on the one and only thing that really bothers me on the Mumby : The cockpit! For a 48 foot catamaran I think that it is really small and uncomfortable. There isn't enough space for a proper table! For me catamaran are all about the cockpit and living outside and still protected. How do you feel about it? Cheers mate!

    • @SAILINGintoFREEDOM
      @SAILINGintoFREEDOM  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Arthur how many do you want at your table? (Round table...joke ha... Never mind) .... It's all a compromise. I think it's big enough just not like a Leopard 46
