Yes Peter, welding inside the hull plate along the horizontal ribs and vertically on the frame segments first is paramount to keeping the outside edges of the shell plates perfectly aligned. And after that's done, they can go back to the outside joints , grind the tacks down smooth and flush, then grind a " U " into the seam down to the root of the weld behind or the edge of the backing rib or frame. This ensures that the cover weld bead is properly penetrated sufficiently so the strength of the structure is not compromised when any stress or impact occurs. Any impact would only most likely put a dent in the shell only where isn't a rib or frame behind it. The exposed weld bead will most likely be ground flush and faired if required by the engineer. The tricky part of all this is maintaining a weld sequence to not overheat the aluminium to ensure any distortion endured by the shell plate in areas where no rib or frame behind will not cause dishing. If this happens, an amended weld procedure must be made to avoid dishing , but still keep the original intended strength of the structure.
I used to weld steel plating, fairing etc. LNG , container and barge in Quincy Shipyard yrs ago. Confirming aluminum is a lot harder to work with than steel. Thx Fulltimber your post said it all . I never worked with Aluminium, looking at the tac spacing I see now why there closer... thx.
Nice to see you are doing things to relax a bit Peter! Was nice chatting with you the other day and remember I'm eager to help with the internet stuff! Take care and good luck with the editing!
I love seeing and hearing your explanations of the steps involved. The flying is a nice touch, so we get to see you back in the air and view the surrounding terrain.
the build is fascinating week after week. its incredible what that crew can do with aluminium stock, an english wheel and a welder. hope to see it in person next year.
Totally absorbed in the building process - Sheet metal fabrication is an art and the engineering skill going into this build is fantastic. Cant wait for the next update.
I am quite intrigued by the process of tack welding on temporary supports then removing them. That is similar to the multiple tack welds you were describing as support for the interior continuous weld that get ground off. Neat process.
I really like to see the raw view of your wandering camera. It is refreshing for me (as an engineer) to see the rapid pace on the shop floor. I see the trade off between “meticulous early design" and “just build it and make it fit”. I suspect the next hull will come together even faster.
She's starting to look like a boat. A nice wide and big one. I can imagine what the water will sound like slapping the hull. Seeing yours fitted out and sailing will be really cool. Buena suerte Plukky, cuídate amigo.
PETER; I saw on YT where you are in the "TOP 10 SAILING CHANNELS" ... ... you're "#10" ... ... but, I bet soon to be "#1" ... ... Peter; look for a email from me soon.
Plukky I want to sail on your new boat. The only video skills I have are from years ago when I taught golf lessons and used a camcorder. 😂. I have owned at least 12 fresh water boats & can be one of the best dingy operators you have ever had. 👍😎🙏🏼✌️
Incredible workmanship. 👌👏👏👏Loved the Be Free bit , probs not intentional. He is an awesome and capable sailor, great you tuber too. Tomas is a good egg too🇩🇰🇦🇺
I dig the fabrication stuff. I've done some aluminum welding. Mostly TIG. The paragliding is cool as well. Especially because it was sketchy! Lol... I'm recovering from sketchy right now and can't wait to do more... lol!
She is really shaping up into a beauty. I bet you're getting quite excited. Im launching my cruiser in a couple of months after years on the hard, so I know how you must feel.
Going to be a great sailboat, Peter. Looking forward to the adventure! Burlington Bill busking on the road and here on you tube. Currently in New Mexico.
@@SAILINGintoFREEDOM We are on the road working our way home from a winter in the Southwest. When we get home, I'll work on some songs.! Best of luck on your great adventure!
Great to see the progress! I am thinking of the black soot though, when welding aluminum typically indicates incomplete or improper shielding gas coverage 🧐
Been following for a while, but right as I start planning a 100% aluminum pontoon boat build, you start showing me all this. I'm rivetted, or maybe welded? Love this series. My project is 100x more simple, but I can still steal some tips. Thanks!
i swear with every one of these build vids i watch i reckon your nurries must be hanging lower each time .... bloody legend plucky da pluckstar ... thanks for the vids...
Nice to see a little ridge soaring! fun little section of hill to fly. I know you kite, but you might give wing foiling a go.. It's awesome and easier to deal with than kiting once you figure out the foiling.. It's like crack! So fun! You'll figure it out quick.
@@SAILINGintoFREEDOM It's honestly the hardest thing I've ever learned to do mainly bc our wind sucks and the water is cold where I live (dry suit cold most of the summer), but once you get a few sessions, it starts to click! Sooo fun!
😂Gosh Peter, I haven't really seen another video of yours since you were spearing fish with the South American babe during the plandemic. Are you having an aluminium cat built? Did you win the lottery? You were one of the few that inspired me to start looking for a boat to sail away from this madness. Then the fifth dimension smiled upon me and I'm currently completing a 40ft cat that sadly its original builder died during the fourth year of his build. I'm working hard to try and get her in the waterby September of this year and then cruise her down to the Med for winter. The original builder designed it as a power cat with two 60HP outboards. I'm completing it as a total solar boat, no sails, 6kW of solar panels, two 45kwh LiPO4 banks, one per hull and two 15kW electric outboards by Aquamot. It already has two 250l petrol tanks so I'm going to carry two 2,2kw petrol generators just in case, but want to run it all from the sun if possible. Maybe see you around in a few years.
Nice wing work at the end, you seemed to have a near close encounter with a shrubbery at one point. Here in the states if you had made contact with it you would have been..."bush wacked"!
2 issues, the Orcas eating rudders, and the exczpe hatch windows leaking or popping out. I would love to be one of your crew, but I'm 60. so I;ll be with you in spirit.
The Cats really coming along. Question once the haul is done will the interior wiring ect be done same building or moved to another location? The kite flying at the end was awesome and it looks as though you came close to the trees a couple times. Keep the videos coming Peter cheers
April 14, 2024 Hi, The You Yubers of “Sailing Delos” channel are also building a Devilliers design, New Zealand passage making aluminum hull sailing catamaran. 😊
I'm trying to work out where the dagger boards will fit. Can't see any clue yet. Years ago, I read Thor Heyerdahl's Kon Tiki Expedition book. The raft had 3 (?) dagger boards, the use of which was unclear. During the voyage, they found that pulling up one would alter the course by 2 or 3 degrees, so they seemed to be used for fine tuning the course.
I imagine the grinding marks on the outer lower hull to be the water movement as the boat sails forward. Yeah, streamlined like a dolphin, only this boat will not have to bob up to breath. Will the dolphins be jealous of Peter's ODC48? :¬) Webhead USA
Plucky screw the subscribers, keep the build going, it's incredible...to put it in perspective look up lifeproof boats their a aluminum rib style pleasure boat they are way different yes but it'll take 2 years for a build they said...so look up the difference it's insane how quickly yours is going let alone others as well... being there to judge the quality would be a no-brainer, brilliant ... 👍
I've was trying to watch this yesterday but couldn't What are those blue tubs you landed near being used for ? You seem to have incredible control of your elevation. I noticed that when you were near that one bigger done that the wind had blown all the vegetation away and you had even more lift.
Gotta say i'm looking forward to the new sailing vids of the future, but I'm kinda missing the dirt poor half sunk sailing of the past. Think I'll go pull a nostalgia marathon. Anyone have a playlist of the best of the worst of the old vids?
It's a pleasure to watch such skilled craftsmen work. Not a DIY project.

Lots of welding nags and pilgrim step welding if necessary.
A heat dissipation paste can be applied parallel to the weld seam.

I never saw coastline like that in Vietnam before, thanks for showing us a bit of Vietnam that normally doesn't get seen 👍
Thanks for the Paragliding bit. Yes, it does break up the engineering monotony, reminding us of the freedom of spirit thats got you to this place.
Looking forward to seeing that boat in the water. I absolutely enjoy the boat build process. You keep building and we'll keep donating.
The boat is huge and is a beautiful piece of aluminum art.
Thankyou for putting your life on the line for those whom are to simple enough to appreciate the welding/building/troubleshooting of your vision…
Plucky , your answering my questions as I'm thinking of them, stop reading my mine its freaking me out ! keep up the great videos mate.

Thanks.

Enjoying the build watch. Cheers mate
You looked in your element with the kite and near the water Peter. Thanks for answering one question i had about all the outer tack welding.
