For us italians, Baggio was, and still is kind of a mythical figure. I'd say he's the best italian player ever (Maldini is up there too), certainly he's the best number 10 in italian history. And he did all of that with a leg and a half. As a 18 years old he injured his knee. The surgery required 220 stitches. At that time, for most players, an injury like that would have meant early retirement. At the end of his career he had 7 surgeries on the knee, he had to do extensive physio before and after training and matches, and he basically couldn't exert any force on that knee, letting him play basically with one leg. And even like that, Guardiola said in a video with Messi, (and confirmed later), that Baggio was the best player he ever played with. For many italians there's much more to him than one of the greatest football players of all time: he played at an oustanding level in an era when the Serie A was not only the best, but the toughest league in the world, especially for a number 10. I'd say he is, to this day, the most beloved and renowned player in italian history.
    Thank you for your video.

He was the most complete attacking player I ever saw! Two-footed, perfect touch, dribbling, passing, every type of shot in his locker, set-pieces, penalties, heading, acrobats, speed, all whilst being injured all his career..... He was every bit as talented as Messi, just injuries made it hard, and his era was harder for goals.

In my opinion across the second half of the 80s and the first half of the 90s 3 players were absolutely above all the others: Diego Armando Maradona, Roberto Baggio and Lothar Mattheus. Baggio was just more unlucky, because after winning the Ballon d'Or in 1993, he lost the Word Championship Final in 1994 on penalties, even if he was the best players of that Word Championship together with Romario. We should remember that also Maradona and Mattheus didn't score in the Final when they won the Word Championship. Moreover Baggio played all his life with a fragile knee, due to a destructive injury when he was just 18 years old. I'm from Brescia and he finished his career in the team of my city. He arrived there at 33 (and around 160 goals scored in Serie A). For many critics he was finished. He stopped after 4 seasons in Brescia at 208 goals in Seria A (he was often injured, he scored 46 goals in 100 presences, it means around 1 goal every two games...). And many many assists and great plays! Also for this reason today in Italy there is a song that says: "Since Baggio has stopped playing, it is no longer Sunday..." (because in those years the Serie A matches were played only that day). Legendary!

I think the likes of Hagi, Baggio and Romario are the forgotten gems of football, they wont get remembered quite the same way as the likes Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Maradona, Zidane, Messi, CR7, but really they are players that would be elite in any era and right up there with all those names
(Maybe Rivaldo is in this category too)

    • @Dingbotz
      @Dingbotz Рік тому +3

Correct. One of the all-time greats - and for me, the greatest alongside Messi - yet hardly gets mentioned when discussions about 'greatest players' arise. Criminal. Just like Messi, he carried his national team and dragged a mediocre one to a WC final.

You are spot on by the lack of player diversity. Players in academies are now being moulded into the perfect player for their team’s system and the amount of flair players and players with the ability to think for themselves and get out of any situation using skill/creativity are falling. Players are being turned into robots and personality is being taken from their game at a younger age compared to ever before. Brazilian youngsters are some of the only ones left.

  • @tocov

Let me tell you this about Baggio - Most of these highlight reels don't even do him justice. You should watch like video of all of Baggio's touches in a certain game. Like Inter vs Real Madrid. It exists on youtube. Because so many of the things he does are not "highlight worthy", but you can feel every touch is magic. You can feel every move is by a football genius.
That's why I say people who didn't get to see Baggio play, will not be able to realize how magical he was. How he made an entire nation fall in love with him in the highs and the lows. How he made kids like me, I was a pre-teen when I started watching him, fall in love with the game. Baggio is the EPITOME of love of football. The epitome of passion for the game, creativity, touch. And you can only see that really through watching him play a match or several matches. It is much more than just his incredible goals and assists.
Baggio is one of the most underrated players, because people tend to forget how truly amazing he was. And he played his entire career on one knee, basically. Since he had several really critical injuries on his other knee.

The 94 team was mediocre and would have exited before the quarters without Baggio. Pagliuca, Berti , Benarivo, Donadoni, Costacurta, Massaro, Mussi were all average players at best. Signori was above average but not a great player. Casiraghi's goal rate at club/international level is approx 1 in 4 - quite woeful and his main assets was his height, and heading not skill @@nespolinho

@@nespolinho absolutely. Donadoni and Massaro struggled to get in Milan’s team and became journeymen at much smaller clubs. I already covered Signori, Baresi was a gel rest but past his best. Zola was great but not pivotal to Italy until 97+ as the team revolves around Baggio. Now reread my previous message where I listed many of that Italian team and you will see how inconsequential they were and that is why the whole world knows that 1994 was the year that a mediocre team was taken all the way to the final by the genius of one player (Roberto Baggio) just like Argentina in 1986 with Diego Maradona.

Bergkamp is one of my favourite players of all time.....but Baggio>Bergkamp, Baggio is closer too the likes of Messi and Maradona than Bergkamp, in terms of ability, we are talking genuine top 10 greatest players of all time kind of level with Baggio IMO
(I do honestly think that 90-00 probably had the most elite players in a decade, maybe the fitness was less and all that , but if we are talking ability, thats the golden era IMO, maybe the 80's but it was for sure between 80 and 00, and probably the 90's)

He was outstanding, thank you Channel 4 and Football Italia for bringing a good part of this great man's career to UK viewers. He knew how to stay on his feet and push the ball past the player then jump the leg that would nowadays bring the foul.... I used to love watching him 'go round the keeper' as I used to view his knack of sending the keeper the wrong way.

Yes, Bergkamp and Baggio shared an almost unique blend of elegance and intelligence on the pitch. I cannot think of many players who had as good a first touch as those two. Baggio was the better player though, better at dribbling at speed, better at set-pieces, more of a goal threat and wider skill-set which allowed him to play as a striker, a second striker, an attacking midfielder, and sometimes on the flanks. Bergkamp really struggled in Italy thanks to the defensive/counter attacking style of play and the extremely strong defences he came up against, whereas Baggio excelled, even when his own coaches seemed intent on stifling him - imagine what he would have done in a more open league? Or how he would fair in todays game (with all the many advantages todays players have)?
He is my all-time favourite player. What he produced, his magical moments - club and country - and goals/assists during what was the toughest time for a forward in Serie A in footballing history (thanks to the many legendary defenders Baresi, Maldini, Cannavaro, Nesta, Aldair, Thuram, Stam, Sammer, Bergomi.... great defences and very tight style of play of many sides), plus the awful injuries he sustained as a teenager - two knee injuries which led him to miss two seasons, they pretty much crippled him for the rest of career. His longevity was also a miracle, playing until he was 37 and arguably got even better with age. Plus he took relegation fodder sides like Brescia and Bologna on the cusp of or into Europe. Brescia were relegated shortly after he retired.

Nobody is above Baggio in the Italian ranks, he’s the all time GOAT. He’s a blend of Maradona & Bergkamp, one of the greatest footballers of all time. Defined by many, though, for his decisive penalty miss Vs Brazil in the 1994 World Cup final shootout, even tho he was their player of the tournament and dragged them pretty much single handidly to the final. If he scored his pen, he’d be talked about in the same breath as Zidane and that ilk.

Jurgan Klopp "no playmaker can create as much as a good counter press can create."
It saddens me to that the era of the great number 10s is over.
Somehow modern football has squeezed the best, most fun, most valued player out of the game.
Joe Cole was a number 10 but was forced to play almost his entire career out on the wing.
Same thing has happened to countless others.
These days classic number 10s like foden, firmino, havertz are made to play up front on their own. Told to chase down full backs and play to the teams system.
It's a shame but it works.
