My dad did not even have high ldl when he had his heart attack. All the doc did was gave him a statin and told him to eat the Mediterranean diet. He suffered from muscle aches and mental fog through the entire time he took the statins. After a carnivorish diet for 6 months he’s down 40lbs, off the meds, and is full of energy and thriving. Thanks to people like Chaffee, Ovadia, Ken Barry, and Pradip Jamnadas for helping improve the health of millions!

So he went keto and is off cholesterol meds, I thought that will raise your LDL. Not saying it’s bad, but I’m sure his LDL didn’t drop to a doctors recommendations on a meat diet. So just can’t believe the doctor took him off meds. That’s awesome though, I just thought they would push up more when the LDL goes up

@@Primetime_dadsI think you need to spend some time reading a few books and watching some more videos. Depending on if you learn better through videos or books..
Cholesterol in food does not raise your cholesterol. We need cholesterol. There is a tremendous amount of misinformation that most people have absorbed and believed to be fact. There are many reasons for this misinformation, it goes beyond the scope of a comment here to explain it but the information is out there. If you want it respond and I will provide some resources. This is the most important thing we can do for ourselves, there is nothing more important healthwise.

I’m a 65 year old and just finished some baseline tests. My doctor yelled at me after I said I won’t take statins he’s recommending. He said, “you’re going to have a heart attack or a stroke! Is that what you want to do to your family?” As he sits like humpty dumpty in his roller chair, belly about half way to his knees. Poor guy. Its what he’s been taught. Of course I’ll never go on a statin. I know he was really concerned. Not sure how to share this information but I think I’ll just recommend your channels! Thank you for getting the word out there! Yes ma’am, we cannot teach on deaf ears. He will accept the fact that pills and surgery do not reverse this disease and do a bad job “managing” it as well. It will only lead to more chest pain, more stents , and possibly clots in other areas of his body. If it happens in his brain, it is a stroke, if it happens in his lungs, it is a pulmonary embolism. Both of these are true emergencies and can threaten life in a very quick way. He must accept this and step up to the plate and be a MAN and make some changes. Or else he is on his way to leave this earth way too soon.
Is this harsh? I’m trying to get through to him. You’re already there, continue to be that amazing influence on him.

@te_hago_las_nalgas Is it extremist to eat something that gives you health benefits that are almost immediately noticeable. For example, I had a constant problem with acid reflux for years and was always taking medication and herbals to make life bearable. When I started carnivore not only did I stop having heartburn (immediatly)I stopped snoring, sleep better and more deeply, I don't have brain fog anymore, my legs don't swell anymore, I lost about 12kilos, don't have any desire for food between meals. This is not a life I will be going back to in a hurry I can assure you, if you see medical results from the diet it makes it absolutely positive. I am nearly 66yrs old and feel better than I have felt for the last 15years. I forgot to say that my skin and hair are also healthier. Once I got over 7 days of Keto Flu, and found somewhere to buy good quality meat, butter, eggs, mineral water, and cheese, it's been easy and enjoyable doing this diet change.

      Hi Odette,
I totally agree with you. I haven't eaten refined sugar or really any fruit in 4 years. Veggies cause me bad autoimmune disease symptoms too, but I still eat a minuscule amount of onion and carrot daily. I should stop that really, as it I only did it to help stop the carnivore diarrhoea when transitioning as it seems to work for me.
In the summer, I had a diet coke on a few occasions. My teeth started hurting, so I thought you need to stop this. It was like coming off cigarettes (I know as an ex-smoker from years ago) I was craving that diet coke like crazy. Totally shocking. The chemicals in it addict you and the sweet taste makes you want more. So, absolutely knocked it on the head. I now only drink sparkling water and black coffee on occasion. My teeth have stopped hurting and I'm no longer craving sweet things!
If I were to eat cake, I would be in a bed, inflamed, not able to think straight and with a pounding heart rate. I'm a registered nurse and I know that this is not right.
I too, intend to keep going on carnivore, but to try to cut back on goat cheese a little (my treat as such). I don't eat cow dairy at all, or drink any milk. Just a little goat cheese daily. I seem to be OK with goat as it's A2 dairy, I believe. I'm at my best on red meat and mostly lamb. If I just ate red meat I think I might be completely better. It's my high LDL which keeps me mixing up my diet as GP scared the life out of me about my 386 LDL on my last visit.
Anyway, waffling on! Great to chat to people on the same path though x

Do you have a UA-cam or other media guiding the transition to full carnivore including base amount of beef to eat to make sure we are not under eating? Also, the guest discussed 5 baseline markers he follows. I think: Waist Circumference, BP, HDL, Triglycerides, and something else. Great interview, great guest. We shouldn't rely solely on experts in a given area to determine the course of our lives and how we treat ourselves, but it's always good when a surgeon in a given area supports the ideas of something that is not exactly mainstream. And it came from someone who didn't just jump on board, it came from someone who benefited from those ideas. And our society needs to get used to the idea that if someone benefits actively from going against the accepted belief in something, it's not always just a genetic freak situation. It needs to be taken seriously and looked at, which is what we are getting now around meat and animal based eating.

But I want something more permenent and real. I have always thought that sugars and processed foods were part of the issue. I believe in the plant issues. I have always thought there was a better way. I am nervous with anything new. The irony of people going to see doctors and showing off their improvement only to be told they're going to hurt themselves is that in most cases the patient knows more about how to achieve health than the supposed expert. The problem is that the patient often still doesn't believe that.

    Hi Anthony. Another excellent interview.
    Thank you.
Please can you do a podcast with Dave Feldman, or at least talk about Lean Mass Hyper Responders (LMHR)? My LDL is 386, but excellent HDL and Tg. However, I have spoken to some individuals who meet the criteria for LMHR phenotype who are experiencing xanthelasma from high LDL on a keto/carnivore diet. Why would this be the case? Could you look into this and perhaps talk about it.
The current thought and advice for LMHRs is to increase carbs to 50-100g a day. The premise being that carbs are the lever to lower LDL. The advice being that not enough is known about exponentially high LDL on a low carb diet to suggest this presentation is benign.
PS - I’ve been predominantly carnivore for a while and back to back viral infections have ceased. However, reducing my red meat intake and increasing carbs has resulted in another cold sore infection. I believe carnivore is the best diet for me but GP says lower your LDL and be seriously worried.
    Thank you.

How's your husband now, nine months later? Rather than a CAC (or, at least, in addition to it), you may wish to consider a CT Coronary Angiogram (CTCA), as CAC can miss some plaques. Also, I suggest you contemplate the following comments from Peter Attia on LDL cholesterol: ua-cam.com/video/X_Jij_Yso_c/v-deo.html Has your husband had his LDL checked? How about ApoB? LDL-P is probably a good test, since approximately 90% of atherogenic particles are LDL.

@@yamlwoz Hi. Thank you for the response. I'm not a doctor, but Vitamin K seems like a really good idea. Similarly, I think going easy on the dietary fat is also well-advised, especially in your husband's situation. I can't post them here, because UA-cam will delete them, but if you click my screen name and go to the "About" tab, I have posted some resources for you to contemplate.
Extremes of anything in life make me uneasy. This goes for diets and supplements, too. Pushing too much in one area can cause the body to push back in other areas, as a compensatory measure. If you look up the term "Mineral Wheel," for example, you will find a graphic that shows the interactions between various minerals. Most things interact and affect other things.
We don't really know the long-term implications of a high-fat, meat-only diet. Such a diet would have been unknown to our ancestors. No doubt they would have preferred fatty meat all day every day, but that would not have been the reality. They ate whatever they could, in order to stay alive. Maybe in 20, 30, or 40 years the carnivore diet will have been properly tested, measured, and have perfect results with no disadvantages. But, until such time, it's an unknown. I wish you and your husband the very best.

You might consider magnesium, as this might melt the calcium in the arteries, then vitamin K2 (not K1) to move the calcium into the bones and teeth. With such a high CAC score, vitamin D might best be avoided until that number comes down, this to reduce the absorption of calcium. Calcium supplements are to be avoided, as well.
By magnesium, I mean magnesium glycinate, and not magnesium oxide. You'll probably have to order this, as it's not common in groceries and pharmacies.
I can offer resources, if you're interested.

I am 83 years old but I did have cardiac events. The reason I have lived as long as I have thus far is heart surgery to correct issues. I had a heart attack 30 years ago. Not over weight, exercised daily, cycling, running, and watched my eating. So my wife took me to the emergency room and the doctor on duty said I had a heart attack and they inserted a stent in my right ventricle artery. Saved my life. A few years went by and I had surgery on both carotid arteries on each side of my neck. The issue was plaque caused by periodontal disease in my gums, which surgery corrected that. However the result was that bad bacteria was in my blood and that is much of story up until 4 years ago I had quadruple bypass surgery and I am still alive due to excellent doctor care. So the question I have is this- how can I get rid of the bad bacteria that resides in my blood and has apparently resided in my blood for decades. I have always taken aspirin and K2, etc. nothing seems to help.

Very excellent interview and conversation about heart health, cholesterol, saturated fat, and the blood lipid metrics that most doctors disregard. Many doctors have a myopic and reductionistic point of view on LDL due to it being depicted as "bad cholesterol" which is not true and the heart lipid hypothesis that basically says high cholesterol causes heart disease (nothing more than guilt by association).
It is the sugars and seed oils in the diet that drive chronic, systemic inflammation and metabolic dysfunction that leads to insulin resistance induced by chronic hyperinsulinemia, which is caused by chronic carbohydrate toxicity in the body as a result of a bad, improper, and inappropriate diet mostly made up of processed carbohydrates, seed and bean oils, and synthetic ingredients the human body is not designed to digest.
Additionally, people with familial hypercholesterolemia, or FH, truly have to be very aware and health-conscious about all of the nutrition and overall lifestyle choices they make. The ones who are metabolically healthy and fit will not show signs of atherosclerosis or atherogenesis, provided they sustain and maintain their optimum lifestyle. However, the ones with metabolic dysfunction and chronic inflammation may experience major issues seen with dyslipidemia than those who don't have FH.
So, it is not the cholesterol or the saturated fat per se. Cholesterol's role is to heal damaged endothelial tissue in the vasculature. It is one's overall metabolic state of being and function that will indicate these risks. A single biomarker doesn't determine your overall health, it is your energy, cognitive ability, mood, stability, ability to adapt effectively, motivation, strength, drive to do more, optimal physiological function of organ systems, tissues, cells, and mitochondria that will shape and define your true state of health. Thanks again for another great episode Dr. Chaffee. You had a brilliant guest and I look forward to seeing you on his podcast for another discussion.

My doctor yelled at me for stopping the statins, told me I was playing with fire. By the way, I’m slim, exercise daily, happy-go-lucky personality, and all my other bloodwork numbers were perfect!

      @@vtgirl1969 Hello,
Thank you for sharing your story. I am happy to hear that you started a carnivorish diet and that you are seeing improvements. Statins deplete Coenzyme Q10 by disrupting the cholesterol cascade (biosynthesis) pathway, which is a natural, biological part of the human body and human development.
Furthermore, LDL is a lipoprotein that transports cholesterol cargo to the liver for recycling. Cholesterol is vital to human development and the primary building block for cell membranes. The main concern is when LDL lipoprotein becomes oxidized due to consuming an improper diet high in carbohydrates and industrial seed oils. However, in general, LDL is not the single marker to look towards to determine your risk of a cardiovascular event or all-cause mortality in that case. More importantly, HDL and triglycerides should be accounted for and the HDL to Triglyceride ratio must be calculated to indicate one's risk of developing a heart attack or stroke.
From the markers you mentioned, your basic blood lipid panel looks fine and your diet is definitely great. Therefore, you are doing awesome. Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing your story. Take care.

That is an excellent question, I think the answer broadly lies in eating things that we are not biologically designed to eat. Every species on earth has a very specific diet, and when any animal goes outside of that diet they get serious adverse health effects. More specifically, it's much more likely to be an inflammatory disease precipitated by the same things that would cause diabetes, metabolic syndrome, etc. Namely carbohydrates, sugar, alcohol, smoking, certain drugs, as well as seed oils which have a direct correlation with the rise in heart disease as well and are very pro-inflammatory.

@@anthonychaffeemd I definitely agree with the statement: "Every species on earth has a very specific diet, and when any animal goes outside of that diet they get serious adverse health effects."
Dr. John McDougall made a strikingly similar statement in a TEDx talk just over a decade ago, however, he was making the claim that a low fat diet of starches (potatoes, rice, corn, bread, beans, etc.) with the addition of fruits and vegetables was the best diet for humans. He supported this idea in part by observing all large successful human populations throughout history.
I think a lot of people are interested in the carnivore diet (myself included), and would find a tremendous amount of value if two doctors of opposing views were to interview each other.
I think as a doctor you should reach out to someone like Dr. John McDougall who has a distinctly dissenting view, if for no other reason than great content that would add a lot of value to viewers who are looking to continue to improve and inform their daily dietary choices.

Different things that you eat can be influenced by the other things that you're eating. So if you're eating red meat with a bunch of plants and fiber it can be digested differently and possibly cause a problem. It's also an issue with being conditioned to think it's bad for you, which will naturally make you feel unwell when you eat it. I would get the same response when I would eat something fatty, and now that's my favorite part. But that's great that you're giving it a try and you're doing well with it! I wouldn't worry about what was happening either way, the important thing is that you're able to eat it now and you're doing great.

If you’re going to trust anyone’s statistics,I trust the insurance industry! A 10% increase in all cause mortality in the life insurance business, is equivalent to a 200 year weather event or three standard deviations from the norm. Today marks 3 years on strict keto/carnivore. I have had 3 CAC scores in my life. 40 was score of 0. At 50 score was 67. At 53 score was 172. I'm 55 years old now and will get another CAC scan this February. Fingers crossed. Lifetime of high triglycerides 400-500 and low HDL 24...A1C was 5.9 weight was 208 lbs. I'm now 170 lbs. A1C is 5.2 Taking prescription fish oil, D3 and K2. Also on low dose statin Crestor with ezetimibe. Triglycerides are now 90! HDL is still low in the 20's. LDL is 66. Total cholesterol is 98. I'm very happy with my labs. CAC scan in February will be very emotional for me if my score is higher. I hear your score increases 20% a year if you don't do anything. I'm doing something....so wish me luck.

Had my 4th CAC Score scan done. Score was 226. So an increase for me. I did some research and found out that statin "stabilize plaque" by accelerating the calcification of your arteries. I also learned about LDL-P and LDL Pattern A & B. I'm LDL pattern B with lots of small dense LDL particles. I should not have been eating all that Saturated fat on keto. If you are LDL Pattern "B" keto is bad for you.

Going ro exercise more and back off some saturated fats....no more dense saturated fats like in cheese and heavy cream and dairy including butter. More olive oil and avocado oil....eating more vegetables and some fruit now. Still low carb.

Keto is great for most people. I agree. Myself, however, when it comes to coffee with buttter, I puke. But you all should be doing it, most especially the version high in saturated fats. I am simply too weak.

    • @Kyarrix
      @Kyarrix Рік тому

There is no need to add butter to coffee. Keto is not 'more fat more fat more fat" it is an adequate amount of fat relative to the diet. People do keto wrong. There is no need to add oils or fats to your coffee if you don't enjoy that. Eat grass-fed fatty meat and if you like coffee have it with some cream.
Dr Chaffee would say to avoid coffee entirely he is a proponent of pure carnivore, meat, water and salt but that isn't something majority of people are willing to do. I still have coffee with heavy cream. An ounce or two of heavy cream once a day in my coffee is something I enjoy.
Dr Chaffee would tell you that he is not always in ketosis because he eats a lot of protein. Protein spikes your insulin to a lesser extent than carbs do but it's still spikes. If you are eating enough protein and healthy fats and staying away from most vegetables, most of the time and avoiding processed food entirely you should be fine.
But do not force yourself to put fat in things that you don't enjoy. Understand that everyone will have their own interpretation and the fact that someone advocates for putting butter and coffee does not mean that this is something you should do. People did not put butter in their coffee thousands of years ago and they were in ketosis most of the time.

Sadly (imo), Dr. Paul Mason (Sydney, Australia) very recently made a lecture/video in which he very specifically named “dairy” a very serious contributor to heart disease, though he did say it’s not as bad as smoking, or drinking, yadda, yadda. He cited a study (???) that demonstrated insulin spikes post dairy consumption. However, “dairy” is pretty broad. I have to wonder if he literally meant 100% of dairy products, or are there some safe ones that are okay. And, btw, if it is 100% of dairy, then how do we explain the French paradox?

Milk has lactose which is guaranteed to spike your blood sugar. I'd be curious about butter (has some milk in it) and cheese. I can tell you from a personal standpoint that I was keto 8 months ago and eating provolone cheese, heavy cream and butter. I quit those (other than occasional butter) when I went carnivore and lost 25 pounds in a month and a half so it seems like Dr. Mason is onto something.

Reading "The Big Fat Surprise; Why Butter, Meat, & Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet" by Nina Teicholz changed my life for the better. It speaks to much of what he is saying here. Not only is 'low fat diet' bad advise, but the types of fat recommended are terrible for your health.

  • @Anna65909
    @Anna65909 11 місяців тому

For DECADES, we were told that saturated fat is detrimental to your health. HOWEVER, that depends ! If you have high insulin levels (insulin resistant), then you cannot metabolize or process saturated fat adequately.. You will need to drastically lower your low carb intake before you can metabolize saturated fat. When you cut your carb intake then metabolizing red meat / bacon does not become a problem. When you intake bread, pasta, rice, and sugar, the body cannot metabolize the saturated fat at the same time because insulin is too busy burning the carbs. Bacon / eggs / saturated fat could be bad if you are insulin resistant. Secretion of insulin prevents you from burning fat. It is NOT the saturated fat that’s the problem, it is HOW the body is processing it.
The more carbs you eat, the more readily they turn into fat which causes your cholesterol / triglicerides to go up. You CAN eat more saturated fat when your insulin levels are low enough! The body cannot efficiently burn carbs and saturated fat at the same time. It’s either one or the other. If your insulin level is high or out of control, then the saturated fat will clog your arteries and contribute to blood fat. CONSUMING SATURATED FAT IS NOT DANGEROUS IF YOUR INSULIN IS LOW. Diabetics have to take medication because they have been eating a lot of carbs, but then, after taking that medication, they have to eat carbs, otherwise their blood sugar can go too low !
