  • Who is stronger? Knight or Samurai? If such battles had taken place in the Middle Ages, then who would have won?
What other sword fights would you like to see?
We offer you a video from the channel / @medievalcombattv5272
"3'rd Tournament of Polish Knights Fights League
Knights fight with sword and sabre is about scoring points - whenever a competitor gets a clear hit on his opponent, he scores a point. The one with more points wins.
Armors and weapons used during the fights imitate with great detail original equipment of medieval European knights - this is one of the requirements to join the tournament.

Well also they can only really do slashes which isn’t what the samurai would be aiming for they’d be prodding for weaknesses to get a final blow stab in to instantly end the fight but they can’t do that obviously, despite the blade being blunt the point is very capable of killing Someone still

Armor is very restrictive, particularly western plate armor. The arms can be lifted up, but will dig into your chest due to the pauldrons, so swinging left to right becomes almost impossible. As such, even seen in doctrine they prefer to gaurd and then do downward swings or straight lunges. As the guy is using what appears to be a Falchion though which has no point, he can pretty much only do downward swings.

As a samurai, once your blade broke, you fall to your knees and have deep thoughts about all of your friends depending on you. You then start shouting and slowly rise to your feet, and your hair gets bigger and longer. The hilt of the sword in your hand starts shining and blade of light manifests in the place where the metal blade used to be. Finally, you discovered your hidden power....then...your eyes open right before the knight lops off your head.

No, at no time is stabbing in the sport ok. The duel we are watching is scored with points, each hit with the blade of the weapon being counted as a point. Disarms and takedowns have their own rules based on location and organization.
We aren't out there trying to injure each other. Hurt each other, sure, it's like any other combat sport. Stabbing with steel, regardless how dull it is, can and will seriously injure someone.

You would gas out in 40 seconds bud.. Also there is a thing called "helmet suffocation", it takes practice to not feel as if you cannot breathe in a helm like his.
You have to control your breathing and realize you aren't actually being starved of oxygen.. This is a common thing with reenacting fighters today and one of the first things they teach you. Many people cannot get past this and fail badly, passing out due to perceived asphyxiation, because their muscles are demanding more blood flow and oxygen from the blood and the helmet fools the body into believing they are suffocating.

It's say knight but in reallity this man is from buhurt witch is tend to do combat in groupe insteed of duel. Meaning they tend to use more brute force tactic because they have at least 2 guys in front of them. Plus this isn't a regular two handed sword this is at the very least a two handed messer witch is not a sword you can swing around to make fancy moves. I've used one myself and I can tell you even with training that shit is heavy as fuck you really don't want to try fancy parry with this one. Quick note to have: European swords and weapon main strengh isn't in it's cutting capacity but in it's blunt force, the reality is that almost all sword in europe were made with the capacity to be resistant and create blunt force trauma against armored or chain mail toops.

Why bother blocking strikes that can’t penetrate your armor? Your sword will take more damage than your armor ever would, plate armor is excellent against slashing attacks, 0% chance of penetrating it. Even if you go for the joints, that knight is wearing a chain mail under the plate, again, not going through that with a slashing motion. Contrary to manga you can’t really cut metal plates.

The katana can't penetrate sheet armor (or even chainmail) at all, since slashing is ineffective against such surfaces. The only way to defeat it is to pierce its weak points (i.e., the joints) which was likely forbidden by the rules because it can actually be dangerous. So basically it was an endurance fight of the biades, and the victor was written from the start since the sword flexes and doesn't get damaged even with the heaviest hits, while the katana is too rigid and so gradually takes damage and either breaks at the hilt or gets bent.

Japanese steel wasn't folded so often to achieve some legendary strength, it was treated so elaborately to make swords at all usable, 200% of the work to create 90% of the hardness. Japanese armor very likely would have become just like western plate armor, if they only had sufficient iron quantities and a feasible way of creating steel, unfortunately they simply had neither. As is, the harder material wins, and that is the European steel. Also up until the high middle ages all western swords were blunt, brash and relied on force of impact, whereas Japanese swords always were used to create flesh wounds through slashing. That goes out of the window when the opponent has plate armor that is impervious to slashes. The samurai did the best he could do and kept going for unarmored parts in the knights armor, but it is an uphill battle. I wouldn't go as far to say that the knight would make it out without a scratch (this is Buhurt, stabbing is forbidden and therefore not accounted for) but he is at a serious advantage.

Although in some cases knights also fought on foot, especially German knights of the 15th century were quite into that. But then they used things like poleaxes and long swords. It would be a waste to use knights who are highly skilled in melee combat as crossbowmen. But there were heavily armoured burghers who used crossbows, because in some cities the crossbowmen were recruited from the richer citizens who could also afford armor. But it was different from city to city.
I guess the point is: a knight has the primary military role as heavy cavalry with lances. So while their symbolic weapon was the sword, their main battle weapon was the lance.

    I can’t say I’m horribly impressed.
The falchion is a cool weapon, but I feel it’s over represented in armored combat sports. There’s a lot more technique with a longsword, which would be a better comparative weapon against the katana from a technical standpoint anyway.
On top of all of this, by what metric does one assume one guy defeated the other?

  • @sleepdeprivedfox9086
    @sleepdeprivedfox9086 Рік тому +4

If we disregard fighting with swords and instead use the weapons that each the samurai and the knight uses, I think it's really a 50/50 fight.
    First, let's talk about armor.
Let's use the earliest version of a Samurai warrior as a base for the fight. The age of samurais started on 1185 which would mean the typical armor these warriors wear are made of strips of iron and leather bound together by silk.
And then let's also take a sample of a Knight of around the same time as the first samurais. The most common image of a Knight around that same time period would be someone after the first crusade. Take the Templar Knights for example. Most Templar Knights at that time wear chainmail armor with a great helm so chances are most if not all knights whether Templar or not wear the same get ups.
    Second, we'll talk about weapons.
Historically accurate samurais specialises in using Spears and bows while on a horse. They rarely use the swords hence why the most common relic any old samurai families to date still havetheir ancestral sword mainly because it rarely gets used during actual combat so less chances of it being broken and scrapped. Katanas together with their smaller version (wakizashi and tanto) are viewed as sidearms only to be used if the samurai is in dire situations where Spears and bows are not available. Katanas are also used as more of ceremonial swords which shows the prestige or honor of said samurai holding it that is why most Katanas would also be decorated and made to be pretty but of course it still needs to be functional since they use it as a side arm.
Knights on the other hand can use a lot of different weapons (depending on what they mainly trained on but since most depictions of knights and combat manuals we have are about using swords then let's say our "knight" uses a typical longsword)
    The FIGHT
Let's assume the fight should be a straight up encounter between the two. Both of them meeting up in a middle of a street.
Samurai would likely pull out his spear and brandish it at the Knight. Knight does pretty much the same with his sword.
Samurai has advantage due to the reach of the spear but the Knight has pretty good armor so he could probably shrug off a stab or two and close in on the Samurai.
Samurai attempts to expand the distance to utilize the advantages of the spear. And since the Samurai has lighter armor (comparitively speaking since it only uses strips of iron and leather as compared to metal chainmails) but then the physique of a knight who is pretty much used to fighting in heavy armor would probably negate the speed advantage of a samurai in lighter armor.
Knight manages to get close making the reach advantage useless and even becomes a disadvantage . Samurai realizes it and lets go of the spear and pulls out Katana.
Knight and Samurai duke it out using swords.
It's pretty much downhill for the samurai from this point onwards.
While Samurais do train in using swords chances are his Knight counter part is far more skilled in the arts of wielding the sword since most of his training are centered around using a sword. Add the fact that the Knight has superior armor, superior strength due to training with large heavy metal armors and at that time the Knights also had superior metallorgy techniques enabling them to make far better and stronger weapons and armor. Which can also be seen on this video where the katana actually broke due to withstanding the impact of the falchion multiple times and those are weapons that was made by modern technology. So one could only imagine how a katana made using the old techniques would fare against weapons made during the crusades.
I'm a fan of both but at the end of it all the Knights would still come out on top regardless of how the fight goes. Maybe if the samurai in question actually specializes on using swords then maybe he might get lucky and win the fight but that's all. He might win the fight if it's a spar but if it comes to fights to the death it would probably be the samurai taking the L on this one.

    • @deepflake5851
      @deepflake5851 Рік тому +1

      The knight crushes the samurai.
The knight was taller and stronger.
      He had better armor.
He used a battle mace or a warhammer against an armored enemy, not a sword.
He would have crushed the samurai, and the samurai lacked weapons which could harm a full European medieval armor.
Only chance of a samurai is using his bow from a distance on a horse.
Now remove the armors and give them swords, things would change depending on the type of sword the Europe would use. But he would still probably win because of longer reach with for instance a rapier. A quick thurst and it would be over.

    • @sleepdeprivedfox9086

@@deepflake5851 totally agree with you. Even back then when the first crusade started, the Islamic States despite viewing the Crusaders as mere barbarians because of how inferior their technology in terms of arithmetic and commerce. They publicly recognize and respect the Crusaders when it comes to warfare sometimes the mere sight of a fully armed Templar Knight in a castle-siege makes them shit their pants and lose morale. It clearly shows how superior the European Knights are compared to Samurais.
Of course I'm saying this not to disrespect the Samurai Warriors but in terms of a direct confrontation the Knights just trumps them anytime.
