I love the final fight in Rashomon - it shows you what a real fight to the death probably would have looked like in a lot of cases. Nothing flashy or cool, just fear and adrenaline.
In every film, he would take down an entire Yakuza clan, sometimes even more, averaging about 40 men each time. However, his dice-playing tricks were truly exceptional.
Normally I really despise narration in a video but you actually added to to with your narration rather than talking during the important stuff or saying the obvious things. 10/10 video. Fastest ten minutes I've spent on UA-cam.
Twilight Samurai's fight is my most memorable simply because Hiroyuki Sanada was the poor samurai who did his duty for his family and his duel was out of desperation not bravado.
@410cultivar I agree, but Seibei was conflicted and he wanted to let the warrior go. Hiroyuki was portraying a man making split second decisions, he wasn't primed for battle.
@@410cultivar if you look carefully (and pause a lot), you'll see he draws with his left hand, not with his right, and the blade is angled with the cutting edge up, not down, this is how he was able to make that move. It's a crazy move, but it is in fact, a real move. As an aside, it is my contention that the entire movie is a set-up for this one shot!
Gohatto, 7 samurai (A. Kurosawa), RAN, Thirteen Assassins (2010), Throne of blood, Kagemusha...are some films that contain very good sword fights, both individual and in battles. Some of them better than the ones on the top.
In Yojimbo, I always loved the last sword fight where Sanjuro spared the life of that crying boy. As he actually showed up at the beginning of the movie who wanted to join the gangsters and abandon life as a farmer. A bookend to the movie.
Zatoichi 2003 is of my favourite. Great story, awesome cast, and excellent fight scenes. The dance sequence at the end with the full cast was just perfect 🥰
There was a fight in After The Rain where the main character fought off several samurai who were angry that their lord look so bad in his fight. The main character tried and tried to talk his way out and used whenever possible passive combat to scare his opponents
What about The Twilight Samurai (たそがれ清兵衛, literally "Twilight Seibei") ist a 2002 Japanese historical drama film co-written and directed by Yoji Yamada and starring Hiroyuki Sanada and Rie Miyazawa. Set in mid-19th century Japan, a few years before the Meiji Restoration, it follows the life of Seibei Iguchi, a low-ranking samurai employed as a bureaucrat. Poor, but not destitute, he still manages to lead a content and happy life with his daughters and his mother, who has dementia. Through an unfortunate turn of events, the turbulent times conspire against him. The film was inspired by the short story "The Bamboo Sword" by Shuhei Fujisawa.[1] The Twilight Samurai won an unprecedented 12 Japanese Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay. The Twilight Samurai was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 76th Academy Awards.
have to disagree, the best swordsman in the movies is Tomisaburo Wakayama as Ogami Itto in the babycart series. great to see him with his real life brother in 3:003:37
What; no 'Seven Samurai'? 😁 The famous duel at the end of 'Sanjuro'; the SF team somewhat overdid the pressure of the blood gush, the force of which nearly knocked the cut actor off his feet. The surprise of the onlookers was a genuine reaction, so the director Kurosawa kept it in the final cut. It's recently been discovered, on analysis that a shorter katana was used in this left hand draw scene, though there are YT videos of Iaidoka who have performed it with a standard blade, but not with an opponent!
Nothing from the “baby cart” series of movies 😮! Anyway your selections were awesome 😊 By baby cart I’m referring to Lone Wolf and Cub series of movies
Samurai Rebellion (上意討ち 拝領妻始末) from 1967 should 100% be in the conversation for top 3. Same director and author of #3 Hara-Kiri / Seppuku (Kobayashi Masaki and Takiguchi Yasuhiko).
I watch The Yakuza several times a year with great reverence. The swordplay is second only to moral codes and commitment. Giri-burdens for others to bear. And when Mitchum reciprocity at the end has me in tears every time!
There are some great TV series which I feel have much better choreographed fight scenes than most you have shown in this video. E.g. all the fight scenes in the 26 part series Nemuri Korishuro and the same actor in another series The Fateful mountain Pass, of which 17 have been up loaded. But the most recent version of a film called the 13 assassins is worth a look also.
@@myronsmith2114I'm not sure about "so many" experts, but yes, Japanese swordsmanship experts have commented that they can tell Tom Cruise had put effort into learning how to use a katana properly, even if he isn't particularly proficient compared to people like, say, Hiroyuki Sanada who have actual, long term sword training.
well that's the compliment to Tom regarding he is not Japanese and just had trained for a few months but still cope up with it, imagine it like a language from a different country
Machibuse (Incident at Blood Pass) is a film many might not know of. It is the second of the films featuring both Toshiro Mifune and Shintaro Katsu. Katsu is not playing Zatoichi in this one so if you want to see him when he is not playing a blind character this is a good option. Overall it is not a great film but it has it good moments along with some dialog between Katsu and Mifune.
I appreciate that these films to be mentioned are somewhat.... Extreme, but what about some of the Ruruoni Kenshin films? Impressive sword play in those.
I recently saw a series with Sintaro Kutzu in it called Kiitchi Hogan the mute Samurai. It contained much of his unique sword play and acting. I half expected to see another series where he plays a deaf samurai also. That can be see in the you tube channel: Samurai vs Ninja, but only until the 17/7.
The final duel in Sanjuro should be number 1. Not only for the fight choreography but for the historical significance of the scene. The massive shower of blood was actually a mistake, the pressure was to high and when the mechanism was triggered the huge geyser of blood erupted. Though a mistake this has become the staple in all chanbara films since.

Zatoichi is one of my favorite characters and Toshiro Mifune is one of my favorite actors. Glad to see both here with repeat appearances.
I love the final fight in Rashomon - it shows you what a real fight to the death probably would have looked like in a lot of cases. Nothing flashy or cool, just fear and adrenaline.
For me, Zatoichi by Shintaro Katsu, is number one. Grettings from Spain 🖐️
In every film, he would take down an entire Yakuza clan, sometimes even more, averaging about 40 men each time. However, his dice-playing tricks were truly exceptional.
When ever I watch Hiroyuki Sanada , I can't shake the feeling he's a man born in the wrong time. His acting is that refined to me.
Normally I really despise narration in a video but you actually added to to with your narration rather than talking during the important stuff or saying the obvious things. 10/10 video. Fastest ten minutes I've spent on UA-cam.
The character actors both male & female made "After the rain" a fantastic movie ... Definitely a favourite of mine👍
Excellent selection...watched all of these when I was a kid...true classics and the actors were true masters

Twilight Samurai's fight is my most memorable simply because Hiroyuki Sanada was the poor samurai who did his duty for his family and his duel was out of desperation not bravado.
That’s a great samurai and one of my favorites. The music is absolutely beautiful. 😉
Yes!!!!
That fight at the end where dude uses two hands on the wakazashi made no sense tho

Can't believe that coin cut scene is 60 years old. Wow.
Same film with his duck dancing scene. 😆
There was a fight in After The Rain where the main character fought off several samurai who were angry that their lord look so bad in his fight. The main character tried and tried to talk his way out and used whenever possible passive combat to scare his opponents
On top of that, he used the blunt side of his sword.
Thank you for this list. I'll go search for these movies now.

3:00, the real divine level of that swordmanship is when you play this video at twice the speed, lol
If you're post is about legendary Japanese sword fighting with movies I recommend SHOGUN ASSASSINS. THE HUNTED. and BLIND FURY.
have to disagree, the best swordsman in the movies is Tomisaburo Wakayama as Ogami Itto in the babycart series. great to see him with his real life brother in 3:00 3:37
You are correct. He and his brother are the best hands down
100% agree. I've watched the 6 movies many times.
Lone Wolf and Cub was the series….the first two are sometimes together as Shogun Assasin
I may not be Japanese but I know great movies. Great picks.

Time for a part 2
Zatoichi (1989) is notoriously famous for its highly controversial production, during which an actor accidentally died from a real sword.

Hey, no love for the "Lone Wolf & Cub" movies (not the show)? They also have some incredible sword fight scenes in it.
Thank you ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Absolutely 👍🏼
Not having the Lone Wolf is a great miss
Beautiful Japanese Samurai culture.........
The scene with the Shogun Episode 9 two armored samurai is also great.
Samurai Rebellion (上意討ち 拝領妻始末) from 1967 should 100% be in the conversation for top 3. Same director and author of #3 Hara-Kiri / Seppuku (Kobayashi Masaki and Takiguchi Yasuhiko).
KATANA #8 THE LAST SAMURAI , ONE MOVE AND HIS HEAD CAME OFFFF !!!😮😮
I'm happy I can see Yabushige again here. lol
Missing: Yasuo Yamada's Twilight Samurai, Masaki Kobayashi's Samurai Rebellion, Kihachi Okamoto's Samurai Assassin, Hideo Gosha's The Wolves.
Why not the Twilight Samurai?
That "Zatoichi cuts a coin" draw is definitely worthy. I must have rewound that scene dozens of times over the years. That draw is just amazeballs.
Great collection! I tried hard to dispute the ranking, but could not 👍
❤️❤️
The coin splitting scene always did it for me!⚡⚡⚡
One of my favourite scenes is from the Yakuza 1974. Where Ken takakura takes on multiple Yakuza.
My favorite scene, from Sword of Doom, when Toshiro Mifune takes out the gang, the man was death in human form there.
Me too, Takakura Ken with katana and Robert Mitchum a double barrel shotgun and a .45 Colt.
Vs a whole bunch of yakuza
I watch The Yakuza several times a year with great reverence. The swordplay is second only to moral codes and commitment. Giri-burdens for others to bear. And when Mitchum reciprocity at the end has me in tears every time!
"Twilight samurai", with Hiroyuki Sanada.
"The Yakuza", with Takakura Ken, and Robert Mitchum, Brian Keith

The gushing blood in Sanjiro was originally a malfunction but became a staple in martial arts/samurai movies.

Many thanks for this vídeo. I searched for the first duel for ages, never found the movie name 👍🏻🏆😉.

The Last Samurai was phenomenal . The 7 Samurai was the best.
thank you very much for the introduction!
Kyuzo's duel in Seven Samurai is the best
Obviously, you're just obsessed with the blind samurai. Which is sad.....they are good, but not great examples of good sword use
Blind fury?
What you find out in the end of the film might change your mind
Shintaro Katsu was one of the best, his brother Tomisaburo Wakayama was excellent as well.

I would add Ken Takakura, in the last fight of "The Yakusa" (1974)
