Making Versailles Planters from Accoya using Festool Domino

  • In this episode I am building some Versailles planters from a Mixture of Accoya and Tricoya Timber. The Tricoya is a sheet product version of the Accoya timber and can be used in unconventional ways as seen in this video, things you wouldn't do with any other timber or panel product, but due to its dimensional stability, it is possible to use these products in this way. I made 4 small planters in total, they were made to the same external dimensions as the ones I was replacing, but using the same timber sizes as a batch of bigger planters that the customer already has.

    The gardener in me says that this is more of a modified Versaille box as the real ones each side panel is generally removable. This allows the gardener access to the roots on all sides of the box once the tree planted within is established and large. The roots are pruned to keep it healthy and to avoid it becoming root bound inside the box. The woodworker in me is envious of your shop and I picked up quite a few tips and tricks watching you break the build into repeatable steps. Thanks for the entertainment! Will subscribe

    Been thinking of making some of these myself and have watched a lot of video's on making them but can't say I was that impressed but this is the way I thought how I would build them. These are by far the best ones I've seen. Love the idea of using the table saw to put the V grooves in. Unfortunately I don't have a spindal moulder so a router will have to do and dowels instead of domino's. Lovely job.

      @BradshawJoinery  4 роки тому +1

      Cheers Robert, I've used the anti fungacidal stain before when doing sikkens, not always, it doesn't make much difference I've found on Accoya. This was back when I used morrells paint and I don't think they do a pre stain to the primer. I always cost the end grains before gluing joints and before primer. All 3mm rad corners and v groove sealant on internal corners. Takes forever 🤣

    Beautiful job!! You seem to use an awful lot of Accoya which I understand is chemically modified Radiata pine. I've used hundreds of board feet of Radiata but I am cuious to know how the treatmant affects the wood. I know it makes it more resistant to weather etc but how does it affect its workability?

    • @BradshawJoinery
      @BradshawJoinery  2 роки тому

      Hi David, thankyou, the accoya is just like very very dry version of radiata pine. It's quite brilttle and duntonthe processes there can be shakes/splitting within the timber, but imo the durability of the finished product is worth these side effects!

    Wow, as someone who has made
    Planters for home and also worked with acoya and I take it the mdf is tricoyya mdf, what do you charge for these, seriously curious, as I don't think 200 a planter comes close, the materials alone are all the most expensive around for external, long life span. Great work,

      Not in accoya/tricoya. They are quite delicate things, very. Solid when assembled but it has the advantage with using the above timbers that everything can be glued together rather than allowing for movement!

    Great work, what do you use for a lining?

    • @BradshawJoinery
      @BradshawJoinery  5 років тому +4

      Use a flexible foam liner (underlay)around the sides then use dpm plastic folded into the corners. These had holes in the bottom with a stainless sheet that had the holes in it. The foam just allows some expansion to prevent freezing from popping the planters at the joints.

    @iceorbz 5 років тому +1

    What is the coating that you were putting on the balls and ends of the planters?

    • @BradshawJoinery
      @BradshawJoinery  5 років тому

      Its a End grain sealer for use before paint. it stops absorption of moisture/uptake of moisture through the end grain of the timber as the paints are opaque/micro porous, it is a susceptible area for water ingress, leading to coating failure. the sealant in the gun is a v groove sealant, same principle, but allows a degree of flexibility at joints while maintaining the performance of the coating.

  • @jasonadams6442
    @jasonadams6442 2 роки тому

    Great Job. Love the videos. Just curious what the top coat was. Also I know you like to use waterborne products and I was wondering if you used solvent based before and if so was there any pros and cons between them. I am thinking of switching to only waterborne. I have sprayed solvent my entire life and I am a little nervous to switch over.

    • @BradshawJoinery
      @BradshawJoinery  2 роки тому +2

      HI Jason, the topcoat is sikkens wf380 or 381, i cannot remeber if gloss or satin. Solvent is deffo easier to work with in most situations. You use less paint, quicker drying and easier sanding and is cheaper to buy. However,, waterbased has its place for exterior woodwork i think, and wouldnt be putting solvent based outside, got to be careful of application conditions too. If you have a good syste/setup id stick with it, and try new stuff on jobs where you can. There is a spraying makes sense group on FB if your doing site spraying thats good for that thing,
