This one really takes me back. Years ago, when I was college, I worked as a projectionist two nights a week. I was showing Ghostbusters while it was still in the West End. I still remember the hysteria it caused. People are still watching it all these years later. Amazing. By the way, Marty doing one coat. Well, that's Australia for you - much drier. Best to go with several sparse layers of paint. One thick coat can make small areas, like the rear, a bit jammy. There's more moisture in our air, so one thick coat can leave the finished job looking like orange peel. Mind how you go.

Are you up for a real challenge? Take a Matchbox, any kind that suits your fancy, and make all the lights work. I don't think it can be done on this small of scale, but Marty got a top light to work so if you can get one to work, with a little messing about, you could probably get them all to appear like they work. A car with a trunk would probably work good, so you could make the rear lights appear to be on with just one tiny LED and some aluminum foil reflectors...
I'm working on a way to replicate the window glass. I kind of did it on one Pontiac firebird already, but the method needs improvement. it uses pieces of soda bottles for the raw material. The biggest problem is that to make a mold, you need a window glass that is in one piece, even if it's scratched up or whatever. I didn't have one to use as a template for the firebird, it was totally missing except for one tiny piece where it originally was held on by the rivet post. Frankly if I had the glass, I would have probably used it and not bothered to try to make one. I could not buy one for it as none were available at the time. Did work out if you're seeing it from the outside, the inside, well that needs to be improved so it can go in like original and not have to be glued in.

He welded metal panels over the Windows on the sides and a curtain in the back and painted it solid black...i remember one Christmas my Grandfather told him " get that darn car out of the driveway everybody will think somebody died here" ..right granddad..with mag rims, side pipes and surfboards on top...lol

    Nice paintjob!
Good to hear the Matchbox restoration community gets along (for the most part).
There's been a lot of drama in other hobby groups.
Anyhow, yeah, the Ecto-1 is a very popular vehicle and I have followed another channel of a fellow who actually does custom recreations of famous movie vehicles and I think he said that this vehicle (the Cadillac the Ecto-1 was based on) is getting harder to find for customization. (This same guy is known for doing reproductions of the Ghostbusters Proton Backpacks.) One, it was built over 6 decades ago; two, the fact that super collectors want these cars makes the jobs more expensive; three, there are fewer and fewer of these cars available in a condition that's worth the customization. They sometimes go with a later model year of the same basic car design. I think this customizer said they end up using the 1958 or 1960 version of the Cadillac vehicle. There are a few differences but the 2-year-gap generally doesn't create a huge amount of belly-griping among the customers.
I believe the quote for an Ecto-1 custom was at least in the $110,000 (American) range. Probably more by the time I get done typing these comments!
I haven't seen an Ecto-1 in person. Good thing, though, is that the original screen-used vehicle still exists. They saved it from deteriorating into a pile a few years back.
I think there's a fair chance the ORIGINAL Ecto-1 will show up in next year's Ghostbusters film.
Hopefully, it won't be a repeat of the 2016 mess!
Personally, I'm more of a 1966 Batmobile fan...
Link to a video of a fan who did his own vehicle conversion of a 1959 vehicle into the Ecto-1 => ua-cam.com/video/zUrOSYEt4XY/v-deo.html
That guy spent $20,000 on his conversion.

If I could dwelve into history. The 1966 Cadillac ambulance was a popular ambulance. This ambulance, and others of the day were called meat wagons. The reason was-prior to 1970 most ambulances were owned by funeral homes. The drivers had little to no first aid training. In those days, if you were having a heart attack or had serious injuries your likelihood of surving the trip to the hospital was small but that all changed in 1970.
Due to the TV show "Emergency" paramedic programs swept the country. Between 1970 and 2000 your likelihood of surving a heart attack went fron 5% to 90% due to paramedic programs.

I really like this old Ambulances

  • @ZGryphon
    @ZGryphon 5 років тому

I think that came out very well--the lack of the ECTO-1 gribblies might bother some people, but I think that at this scale, it's near-impossible to make them proportional anyway, so you might as well just have the nice clean lines of the original car.
Y'know, it occurs to me that one thing I've never seen is someone doing up a vintage diecast ambulance to look like the Ghostbusters car _before_ they fixed it up--with the black primer and the ratty old lights and stuff. That could be a fun custom if you're ever looking for something to do with another one of these. (Technically it's not the right kind of ambulance--the one in the movie is a Miller-Meteor, not an S&S--but let's not be pedantic. :)
Another fun thing to do with those decals would be to put them on one of the Mercedes "Binz" ambulances instead. EuroGhostbusters!

Eamonn Haddon I would have sent him one, but in America our hotdogs are sold in shrink wrapped plastic. I saw where he used the caustic soda and it was a mess in his kitchen, and where he exploded the glass but didn’t see the unboxing. I was screaming do that in the sink, but probably wouldn’t have made for good video.

That paint looks fine to me Rob.👍 I heard Marty say that and did wonder what other restorers would think.I suppose different projects will need different painting styles. The creamy yellow headlights look good. I do tend to prefer the straight restorations but this is such a common casting, I think it's nice to do something a little bit different. I think Matchbox missed a trick with this one; they could have re-released this casting as ECTO 1 after the film came out.
    Who ya gonna call?😊
