You definitely have to possess the right temperament to for this type of job. I'm glad he's being honest about how he feels he is sacrificing other parts of his life for it but that to him, it's worth it. Respect.
That's not introversion. Enjoying solitary moments and being introvert are two different things. The guy there can be the most extrovert and talkative person on earth, still he loves being alone in a lookout for months.
This is my life's goal, I want to accomplish the goal that's equal to his. I could already imagine how peaceful life would be there as you're sipping your tea while watching the sun rises.
I can already see the story; "Firewatch lookout in Montana gone missing", then they investigate and find NOTHING, like he's just GONE, but there's 1 drop of blood on the CEILING
You're not allowed to cover up the windows. Since you need to be always vigilant incase something bad happens to the forest, like someone forgetting to put out a campfire.
These “introverts” saying this is their dream home. No it isn’t. You won’t have internet or electricity. You’ll go insane unless you love nature as much as this man.
Green Guy Except I actually enjoy nature. Huge difference. And I know most “introverts” spend all their time on their phones and are definitely not fans of nature.
Hell, I miss being a dispatcher. Talking to the lookouts was my favourite part. It takes a calm and gentle person with a lot of inner strength to live in a lookout or fire tower. My sister still does it.
Im less interested in his morning coffee and walks, more interested in how he receives his needs. Where does the food, water and electricity come from? How does the bathroom work? Is there a laundry? Does he get visitors?... People are more curious about that than his morning walks in the mountains
xxxxmimi Far as I can tell the government provides food and other essentials, he probably has a water filter, definitely has an outhouse, probably a river or stream to wash clothes, definitely no visitors.
He works 10 days so he likely brings food and stuff, washes his clothes when he’s off. People can visit if they want. Electricity is a good question. The likely answer is solar panels and a generator if there’s not enough sun.
I did three season's at the most remote lookout in the Continental US. It's called Arctic Point and is in the Frank Church Wilderness area in Idaho. Water was collected (by me ) 1/4 mile away at a spring. Best water I've ever had...yes it was tested every year. As a rule the Forest Service provides stove fuel, battery's and a small charging (solar) system for the Forest Radio. I was delivered to my lookout on horse's and mules and could pack in 1500 lbs. of food, tp, clothes, books, etc. All your food is on your own dime. Typically at the remote lookouts you'll get one resupply during the season. You call in your order and the FS deliver's it to your site. Yup...outhouse. Mine was a nice one. Arctic point was built in 1939, and was even manned during WW2. It's part of the Krassel Ranger District, out of McCall, Id.
So no food stipend, eh? I thought you would've been provided with a minimal amount of gratis food supplies. Another question. What about trash? Did you have to pack it out yourself too? Lastly. Get a lot of backpackers, through hikers, etc. show up unexpectedly?
This is actually so amazing. Spending time alone in nature on top of a mountain. The quietness and calmness of nature is probably so nice for a person to just relax in life and take it easy.
I am very amazed after seeing this. This guy is living the real life, a life free from the city's hustle where there's only peace. I hope that someday I can get there. Although as he said, it sometimes become tricky, that thing is bearable.
I worked for the USFS as a firefighter in Northern California and Oregon. I miss it every day. It's some of the hardest work around, but God those were good times. Especially working on a Hotshot crew - you end up in some really remote and pretty much untouched areas of North America. It's hard not to love your job when you're sleeping on some piece of ground that, most likely, no one has seen in a very long time. Or hiking into work, watching the sun crest the peaks of the Rockies at 10,000ft. The Pacific Northwest is definitely my favorite, though. Tough firefighting, but I got a thing for waterfalls and Doug Fir, lol. Best job in the world.
While watching this I had a big Smile in my face all the time. I myself had some stays in remote places Like an old wooden hut in the forest or in a former electricity tower in czech republic and enjoyed it so much. But living in such a place for a couple of months serving a real purpose must be amazing! Only a Lighthouse in some heavy storm could be better! :D
only 4-6 months a year so you have to find out what to do while your not in the mountains. Hopefully you can find a restaurant or someplace that keeps hiring you every year for 6-8 months. Other than that its great
I lived on a boat with 3guys on the assam bangladesh border and can attest to the fact that the solitude is not at all overrated and completely worth it
I used to get those sunrises from my old residence. It's really great! You don't feel like "Fuck, let me just sleep!". Starting a day with that kind of view is ... just wonderful. I really hope everyone reading this comment gets to experience it someday.
George A. Really??? Funny thing, you might want to check budgets for fire fighting for the last twenty years. All administrations have shortchanged the fire fighting budgets to the forest service. And the fires are getting bigger and more frequent because of prolonged droughts in the West. And to top it off, the forest service has to pull money from other parts of the budget that could help reduce fires in order to cover increasing costs. Try to at LEAST make an intelligent comment when you post...
Wow another brainwahed libtard stop watching fake news and educate yourself before talking. So you think it's okay for them to take money from the Forest service and give it to trans gender astronauts?
I can argue that we put far too much money into military, but then i'd be like you providing no substantial evidence. Its clear that the US is number one when it comes to its army in several respects, and i'm not saying to tank the military but we should move some efforts annually to other places such as fire watching, until we can start to see where the military budget should lay at.
@@daisychain3007 his job is looking out for fires though. wouldn't curtains defeat the purpose. i suppose his little house has windows on all sides precisely for this reason

I can't stand when people say that by doing one thing you miss other things in life. This implies that there is some kind of checklist that makes one life more complete than another. To think that any one person is going to experience everything a life can offer considering an 80 year average life span, changes in technology, the skills and time it takes to learn for things like flying planes or being a CEO. It's not even safe for a person to try to experience everything considering the exhaustion they would be experiencing. You're much better off making peace with the limited experience you will have in life than to endanger the lives of others trying to justify your time on Earth to the standards of gods.
Hi Loui. I agree with the point you make. When this guy is saying he misses out on things and explaining he can’t attend a friend’s wedding then why do you say you can’t stand that. The guy makes a choice and accepts the consequences. That’s fair for him to say isn’t it?
I couldn't agree more, Louie. Also by people saying that by doing one thing you miss out on other things in life, they are suggesting that life is a competition and that if you do not live up to their idea of a full and meaningful life, you are somewhat inadequate. This sort of mindset creates unnecessary stress and untold misery.
@@Martin-yl5zb Nobody forced the guy to do that job. Anyone offering to take up a solitary job like that, knows what he or she is letting themselves in for. Of course, there are people who couldn't do it, but maybe he would hate their lifestyles, as well.
Oh yeah! I moved to Montana from Los Angeles,CA (yuck) in 92, you couldn't drag me from here now...as of now I have lived in Montana longer than L.A. I am now officially a Montanan! :) But please, if you decide to move here, leave your "baggage" behind (don't bring your silly city life style with you) or it will become like the place you left-already happening in Bozeman, (L.A vrs. 2.0), locals call it Bozangeles! lol "When in Rome do as the Romans do" PLEASE.
You guys in US need to be happy for having opportunities like this... Here in Brazil we don't even have hatches in mountains and when we do, it's totally unappropriated for anything but stay one night and go. Always on national parks that have enormous difficulties and paper to handle with when you want to go for a hike. I would love to have a place like this nearby.
Woah, such a great video, thank you! I also would love to know: How and when does he get a supply? What he has to do when there is a fire? Has he observed any fire from all his shifts?
Absolute, one hundred percent serious and sincere question. What does one have to to do or perhaps have, qualification wise to do something like this? Completely intrigued. Anyone, anything?
Nathan Bodie My brother is on the way to a similar path like this! He graduated with a degree in environmental science and went to work for the California Conservation Corps. A lot of it is working for the city in areas such as conservation and recreation. He helped out during the California fires. After he has that experience he heard of job opportunities that included but was not limited to the position of fire watch. I’m sure there are other ways you can be qualified but that’s what I know from my brother. Hope that helps!
Some of these lookouts are available for rent on Recreation.gov for dirt cheap, and they provide some of the most extraordinary views and absolute peace you could ever wish to find :)

Why is no one mentioning how scary it is at night when you're surrounded by windows with no curtains?
Keith Ten Right? The anxiety of feeling like being surrounded at night or looking at a distance and seeing a figure
maybe because it isn't that scary in practice.
ho-ly-fuck I hadn't thought of that lmao ;-; I would fucking die if I saw something in the distance.

There is no need for curtains when atop a mountain.

Being with nature sounds nice though it get lonely but you get see the sunset and get away from the pollution.
It's only for 10-days at a time. That's no big deal.
These “introverts” saying this is their dream home. No it isn’t. You won’t have internet or electricity. You’ll go insane unless you love nature as much as this man.
Lol maybe its just you who cant live without wifi or electricity
Green Guy Except I actually enjoy nature. Huge difference. And I know most “introverts” spend all their time on their phones and are definitely not fans of nature.
give me some instrument and some books and i’m good!! i get on my phone a lot throughout the day but i think i’d really enjoy this.
How would he be using his radio with no electricity? Lol, also you can see a power strip right there at 1:00
techtonics Beats he could have batteries for the radio but yeah I’m starting to see he does have electricity but also no recreational devices.
This sounds like city slicker talk.

Where's his bucket? How the hell do they expect that guy to put a fire out without a bucket?
He doesn't have a bucket because democrats took their budget and gave it to transgender astronauts thanks Obummer.
George A.
Brian Garrow lmao the joke flew miles over your head
I can argue that we put far too much money into military, but then i'd be like you providing no substantial evidence.
Its clear that the US is number one when it comes to its army in several respects, and i'm not saying to tank the military but we should move some efforts annually to other places such as fire watching, until we can start to see where the military budget should lay at.

Well said!
Louie bro, you are my religion 🙏🙌👏
