Get's a thumbs up from me! I was born and raised here in Houston, and to see how much the city has changed in JUST the last 10 years... especially the population boom!
A couple of comments about work and traffic here in town: When relocating to Houston for work, don't make the mistake of not living close to your place of business. Generally, try to stick to the quadrant of the city where work and home are co-located. Despite Houston having three loops, you're in for a tough time if you live in, say, Pearland and your job is in Cypress or Katy. A lot of companies have flexible work schedules to get around the traffic headaches. Many people get up really early (I got up at 4:45 AM ) to be at work by 6 AM so they can leave the office by 3 PM. You have to be deliberate in your car trips. Where I used to live before moving to Houston, if I needed a grocery item, I could hop in the car and run 10 minutes to the supermarket. That doesn't happen around here. For example, I live 3 miles from an HEB, Walmart, and Kroger. Just to run over there for a loaf of bread will cost you 1 hour round trip due to traffic. Every trip to any store or business in the immediate area is going to be painful. Make sure that you plan your trips for multiple stops...that or get used to going grocery shopping in the middle of the night. 🙂 I've spent a fair amount of time in Chicago traffic, both the city and the burbs. Houston is just as painful as Chicago. One driving tip that you'll quickly learn - always, always, always leave the 3-second rule between you and the car ahead - especially on the expressway. Texas drivers have this weird thing that they cannot accept that space and will do everything in their power to pass you just to take the space. LET THEM DO IT. You'll be rolling down the expressway and all of a sudden, things will come to a stop for no apparent reason. Then, traffic opens up just as suddenly as it stopped. I've not seen this phenomenon in Chicago, so I chalk it up to the frontage roads and their many, many exists to/from them. They insert those delays that in other cities are caused by accidents, police activity, whatever. Another thing you'll quickly discover are the tropical downpours that can hit. You'll be in sunshine, dry pavement, then hit a downpour that blinds you to anything past your front bumper. Then, the spray from 10-lanes of traffic will make visibility tough until you hit dry pavement, often just a mile down the road where you'll be in full sun again. I only saw that kind of thing in Florida, but it's also a thing here during the summer months. Finally, get an EZ tag and use the tollways when it makes sense. Know the times for the variable pricing tolls. For example, if you hit an entry transponder before 3 PM on the Katy Tollway, you can ride the entire length of the tollway for $1. If you enter at 3:01 PM, you'll pay $7+. The tolls are pretty reasonable compared to other cities. You'll thank me later. :-)
Born and raised here and you’re grocery trip story has to be a lie. It’s never taken me an hour to get to the grocery store simply because they are everywhere and traffic is bad, but not 1 hour to drive 3 miles bad. Not at all. I live 5 miles from Walmart and it takes me 10-15 minutes to get there even though it’s on a busy road.

Yeah......near an hour. The OP's response is right on for what I've experienced movingi to Katy TX. The freeways are a mess, the drivers are out in lala land on their phones and don't move when the light turns green. But they sure move when it turns red!!!!! So many red light violations. Everyone drives a huge truck and thinks they own the road. And I back up the OPs suggestion about the EZ tag. The roads are confusing at best and until you figure out what is a toll road and what isn't (they are not marked well) you will need an EZ tag. The last thing you need to worry about is getting extra charged for being on a toll road. The most frustrating is that the highways do not go where you need to go. and many are not really highways but slightly elevated surface roads. And no one takes care of the road condition. So there are pot holes and hazards everywhere. I went to an event at the Marriot out at Bush airport last weekend. To and From cost me $17 in tolls. and it was less then 20 miles from my home.

I love heat. I'm built for it. I love when it feels like a sauna outside. 100 degrees feels great to me. I'm from Chicago and summers are hot and humid. With the heat index it often feels 110+.I have my central air on 80 inside though as it feels comfortable for indoors. My grandmother and family lineage is from Texas so perhaps it's in my DNA.
My lineage is East Texas. I am from Los Angeles. I have family in H-Town and the hospitality of people are great. I lived there in 2016. But the heat is not in my DNA 😂
I moved from Michigan had my stuff stolen and had to sleep outside for four months till my I'd came and during that ugly situation the Natives of Houston has proven to be some of the kindest funniest most beautiful people I will say the biggest advantage is community

Grew up in New Orleans but lived in Houston for a summer when Katrina hit in 05 then spent a year in 23. Moved back to Nola early 24 and I already miss it 😭Also, I lived in Mid Town two blocks from the red line and I worked downtown, I barely drove.

How y’all like the heat? During El Niño it’s normal for 110+ heat. El Niño usually last for 3-5 years. It’s gonna be this hot every year like this year. Winters will be hella cold.
I loved Houston but that heat. Wheew. I made a friend who told about the Underground stores in downtown. I had to walk in the Underground just to walk around. I visited my cousin in January and it was better for me this time around compared to when I lived there in 2016 but that is probably because she took me all the way to Center, Texas where our fathers were born and i got to see that side and the food too. Truthfully I love smoothies so Smoothie King was my favorite place to go beside Golden Corral and people were so friendly that came to the table and had convos with me and my cousin. (Something rare here in California. )Probably because of the many plates i had 😅
Lot of ppl came to Texas just for the pandemic then left back to where they’re from once it was over. But Texas is still unique and has some great spots

I take it yall live in Mem City? If so, yall should try Snooze, Pluckers, Yardhouse, Taste of Texas (expensive) if y'all haven't. Also be sure to take advantage of those HOV lanes when y'all can.
I will add to this. If you move to Houston. Get a place near where you work. I live about 45 minutes away from downtown where I work and I never have to get on the freeway.
My girlfriend and I are thinking about moving to Houston in a month. I've lived in NYC and SF and would love to live downtown in a new development...In SF the new developments have priced everyone out of the city (unless they work in tech). How do the locals feel about all the new developments? I don't want to move and contribute to destroying a city like people have done to SF.
Tbh with you, most Houstonians are ready for old neighborhoods to be revitalized. So, there is gentrification, if that’s what you’re driving at. But, for us, we welcome the new development (except when it’s overdone in historically preserved areas like Heights “old 2nd ward” and Montrose). As long as the hood is good, we don’t want to change the character of it. But we have many aging and dilapidated neighborhoods in need of a revamp. 3rd Ward has come a long way. Now they just call it “Midtown”. Little known fact is that if you buy a single family in a older hood, you will qualify for many city government help programs. They can sometimes pay your whole down payment. You don’t have to be poor to qualify. This is how the city incentivizes investment and homeownership in struggling zip codes. So you will be welcome. Please find a good realtor in HTX that can help steer you to the right area. And remember that the belt is the new loop. You want easy access to the belt, loop, SW, 90, and NW.

Im brand new to HTX, literally been here for 2 days. You need great insurance. Drivers here are terrible, and majority of them do not have insurance. You'll get hit (not because you're a bad driver but bc Texans are) and come to find very quick that majority of these mfs have fake papers, etc. And be s*it outta luck. People here drive EXTREMELY RECKLESS AND VERY AGGRESSIVELY. It gets hectic. Literally everyday someone dies in a car accident here (I've witnessed first-hand literally watching a car get ran into, flipping and tumbling to their death). It's built very awkwardly and their are a tone of highways, plan on paying a ton of tolls because theyre clocking people out here left and right, especially if youre new to HTX, you can easily miss an exit or take a wrong turn and end up having to travel well past your destination, through tolls that you literally have no other option but to go through because the highways are built unforgiving. There's always a ton of construction going on and in a lot of areas are pretty dangerous, especially bc of gun laws out here. My first day here i was buying something in a corner store and some Hispanic guy literally walked up to someone in front of the store and basically emptied his entire clip and nobody knew what for. Freaking insane. "Southern Hospitality" only goes so far, people have different takes on the whole respect thing and you can easily offend someone for something as little as breathing the wrong way (i know doesn't make sense or seems extreme, but so far that's how my experience has been). My car had no scratches, dmg, etc. And o drove from cali, within an an hour or two of driving through TX, ESPECIALLY in houston i had been side swiped, my driver side mirror was smashed, and my bumper was rammed into and dented. Ppl here are pretty nice like anywhere really, but they all have very short tempers and rage fuses. Again ive literally only been here a couple days. If youve never lived in a city or busy area in general, youll hate it here. There's just too much going on. Traffic will kill you if you're caught in rush hour and probably quite literally bc of the heat. Definitely always have and drink a ton of water. Wherever you are/go. Ppl complain about cali traffic and weather, etc. And after being here (HTX) even in my short time i can tell you that cali is immensely better. Ppl drive safer and actually look (most of the time) when theyre changing lanes, etc. And give you space. HTX is horrific in that department. Please just be very careful driving out here. Most of the areas are bullied by towing companies and trucks that will tow for the most absurd reasons. Its a gigantic melting pot here. I honestly regret coming to live out here. Im not new to city life as ive lived in places like Wash DC, Cali, Chicago, etc. But i genuinely from the bottom of my heart can say that i 100% dislike HTX so far, just from the traffic/ driver attitudes alone. The set-up/ landscape or however you want to label it doesn't help ethier. Theres a reason weed among a lot of other things has not been legalized out here and frankly it doesnt stop mfs from selling it. Almost all the places the smell/presence of it has been strong and even on the highways which blows my mind because of how chaotic they already are. Obviously like anywhere if youre there ling enough youll "get used to it" but it can be extremely nerve racking and anxiety inducing out here, even in the more country areas traffic and drivers r'pertty bad. HTX does not have my vote. Its definitely not for everyone and especially not for people that like quiet or more chill type areas. Honestly the only reason id choose to live here or even really be here was if business was involved and even then i really wouldn't want to be out here like that it's really not worth all the stress and mental anguish that comes with it. TX is a nice place, but i really wouldn't recommend living in the city or mear it at all.
Welcome to Houston, TX. I always tell people to give the state/city 6 months to a year before judging it. Based on what you said, that's a bit traumatic for 2 days but I can believe it. My vehicle has been damaged so badly in Houston and not from me. Give it a few more months and if it's not for you pull out the drawing board. Everyone flees here thinking it's this promise land of a place and all there is to do is work, eat, and go out occasionally (if you have play $ during this recession). Houston will wake you tf up and make you tough. I am growing older and realized I'm no longer into larger cities. Been in Texas since 11 years old now in my 30s planning an exit. If it hurts your mental health LEAVE.

Now granted sxxx has gotten expensive as hell here but I never point fingers. Just be careful. Don't move out here because Nikki, Jon and Sarah did. Everyone has different circumstances. I see multiple UA-cam videos on "God told me to move to Houston and my life is so much better". Realize and understand you can make it anywhere in this country. We have over 50 states to choose from so choose wisely.

I'm not being dis respectful or anything, but I'm curious with the housing affordability in Houston and the surrounding areas, why would you rent? Maybe because I'm older, but the #1 priority is security of housing. I don't want to be at the whim of a property manager, landlord or whatever.....knowing that my rent will go up every year or that my lease will end in a year and go to month to month. BEing at the mercy of being kicked out at a moments notice. I see a lot of new housing and a lot of new apartment housing. And I'm just curious.....why rent?
Have you researched the property taxes on Houston? Insane and not to mention you have to be careful where you purchase a home because some areas flood real badly here.
Mostly rush hour but can be bad anytime. Houston drivers are extremely aggressive. Speeding, cutting you off, road rage, etc. Not a relaxing place to cruise. However, the traffic is manageable outside of rush hours.@@abdullahimohamed5807

Houston has some amazing parks and National parks as well. Now as far as a beach we have Galveston (not really clean) Corpus Christi I've never been but have and seen amazing photos and heard stories. There's so much to do in Texas. 😃
There are some state parks in the immediate area, especially to our north. For some really cool camping/hiking options, check out some of the National parks in west Texas. Palo Duro State Park is near Amarillo and is the second largest canyon in the US outside of the Grand Canyon. Big Bend National Park over towards El Paso is another great and massive park with incredible views, hiking, and the like. That area is also a National Dark Area where surrounding towns and homes aren't allowed to use external lighting. The view at night is unbelievable...you can see the Milky Way across the entire sky...and quiet...wow. It's almost distressing how dark and quiet the area is. It's like being in a cave.
Thanks for the update. I'm planning to make a move to Texas soon from Massachusetts, most likely to the Houston area. Man, it's unfortunate that the beach is not taken care of. I'm a fan of the beach. I need to get away from the cold, hahaha.

It’s just the water is the problem, but there r certain spots where u can at least dip your feet in Galveston like near Jamaica Beach area but it varies throughout the seasons. It’s been times where I was adamant about not getting into the water, but was shock to see the water was decent enough to go in. But then the next day in the same spot I went in the water has changed 😳and refused to get in!

You all come on down, I left HTX twice after Dallas and Miami. To much wasted time in traffic, dirty breathing, hot n humid, money doesnt help unless you are in the top ten percentile. Ageist people here too. HTX makes you so busy. Older now, time to go, and get away, leave today, I want to wear a suit again, not for church, but for style. Tacos are the best, BBQ is okay, Soul food is stale overall. Dash cam for court is necessary. DUI drivers are highest crashers in the country. Nice place to live for a decade, nothing more, the floods, critters, and gun toters are to common. Weak thugs drag old women for purses. And the same sucker punch 70 year old men for their wallets. Don't raise kids here unless they're athletic or work well alone with STEM training. Revolving door Police Chiefs. The new Mayor is petty, so far he's grandstanding. Infrastructure everywhere is growing more problematic than the Rust belt states. RE prices are fake but manipulated to look valuable for quick profits. Think about the Floods, cyclones, and more twisters and lax construction codes. Public transportation works for a few unless its rodeo month. Did I mention Tacos on every other corner, fat city frfr. I've lived in the southern suburbs of Houston my whole life. I hate this city. The traffic is horrific, the city planning is hyper inefficient, there's no social scene, sense of community, or nightlife here. Even driving to the Pearland town center is a drag.
Similar heat and humidity. However, Tampa has beautiful beaches close by to escape to.. Also Houston might even be a touch hotter with all the concrete.
Texas is a great state with much to offer... BUT the drivers are horrible & cut you off alot, it's a muggy sticky heat, and you have to drive EVERYWHERE. (*cough cough) Atlanta is better

Houston is a fun place, but it is an endless stretch of freeways and hood as far as the eye can see. There are nice parts too.
How y’all like the heat? During El Niño it’s normal for 110+ heat. El Niño usually last for 3-5 years. It’s gonna be this hot every year like this year. Winters will be hella cold.

I loved Houston but that heat. Wheew. I made a friend who told about the Underground stores in downtown. I had to walk in the Underground just to walk around. I visited my cousin in January and it was better for me this time around compared to when I lived there in 2016 but that is probably because she took me all the way to Center, Texas where our fathers were born and i got to see that side and the food too. Truthfully I love smoothies so Smoothie King was my favorite place to go beside Golden Corral and people were so friendly that came to the table and had convos with me and my cousin. (Something rare here in California. )Probably because of the many plates i had 😅

I will add to this. If you move to Houston. Get a place near where you work. I live about 45 minutes away from downtown where I work and I never have to get on the freeway.
My girlfriend and I are thinking about moving to Houston in a month. I've lived in NYC and SF and would love to live downtown in a new development...In SF the new developments have priced everyone out of the city (unless they work in tech). How do the locals feel about all the new developments? I don't want to move and contribute to destroying a city like people have done to SF.
Tbh with you, most Houstonians are ready for old neighborhoods to be revitalized. So, there is gentrification, if that’s what you’re driving at. But, for us, we welcome the new development (except when it’s overdone in historically preserved areas like Heights “old 2nd ward” and Montrose). As long as the hood is good, we don’t want to change the character of it. But we have many aging and dilapidated neighborhoods in need of a revamp. 3rd Ward has come a long way. Now they just call it “Midtown”. Little known fact is that if you buy a single family in a older hood, you will qualify for many city government help programs. They can sometimes pay your whole down payment. You don’t have to be poor to qualify. This is how the city incentivizes investment and homeownership in struggling zip codes. So you will be welcome. Please find a good realtor in HTX that can help steer you to the right area. And remember that the belt is the new loop. You want easy access to the belt, loop, SW, 90, and NW.

Im brand new to HTX, literally been here for 2 days. You need great insurance. Drivers here are terrible, and majority of them do not have insurance. You'll get hit (not because you're a bad driver but bc Texans are) and come to find very quick that majority of these mfs have fake papers, etc. And be s*it outta luck. People here drive EXTREMELY RECKLESS AND VERY AGGRESSIVELY. It gets hectic. Literally everyday someone dies in a car accident here (I've witnessed first-hand literally watching a car get ran into, flipping and tumbling to their death). It's built very awkwardly and their are a tone of highways, plan on paying a ton of tolls because theyre clocking people out here left and right, especially if youre new to HTX, you can easily miss an exit or take a wrong turn and end up having to travel well past your destination, through tolls that you literally have no other option but to go through because the highways are built unforgiving. There's always a ton of construction going on and in a lot of areas are pretty dangerous, especially bc of gun laws out here. My first day here i was buying something in a corner store and some Hispanic guy literally walked up to someone in front of the store and basically emptied his entire clip and nobody knew what for. Freaking insane. "Southern Hospitality" only goes so far, people have different takes on the whole respect thing and you can easily offend someone for something as little as breathing the wrong way (i know doesn't make sense or seems extreme, but so far that's how my experience has been). My car had no scratches, dmg, etc. And o drove from cali, within an an hour or two of driving through TX, ESPECIALLY in houston i had been side swiped, my driver side mirror was smashed, and my bumper was rammed into and dented. Ppl here are pretty nice like anywhere really, but they all have very short tempers and rage fuses. Again ive literally only been here a couple days. If youve never lived in a city or busy area in general, youll hate it here. There's just too much going on. Traffic will kill you if you're caught in rush hour and probably quite literally bc of the heat. Definitely always have and drink a ton of water. Wherever you are/go.
Ppl complain about cali traffic and weather, etc. And after being here (HTX) even in my short time i can tell you that cali is immensely better. Ppl drive safer and actually look (most of the time) when theyre changing lanes, etc. And give you space. HTX is horrific in that department. Please just be very careful driving out here. Most of the areas are bullied by towing companies and trucks that will tow for the most absurd reasons. Its a gigantic melting pot here. I honestly regret coming to live out here. Im not new to city life as ive lived in places like Wash DC, Cali, Chicago, etc. But i genuinely from the bottom of my heart can say that i 100% dislike HTX so far, just from the traffic/ driver attitudes alone. The set-up/ landscape or however you want to label it doesn't help ethier. Theres a reason weed among a lot of other things has not been legalized out here and frankly it doesnt stop mfs from selling it. Almost all the places the smell/presence of it has been strong and even on the highways which blows my mind because of how chaotic they already are. Obviously like anywhere if youre there ling enough youll "get used to it" but it can be extremely nerve racking and anxiety inducing out here, even in the more country areas traffic and drivers r'pertty bad. HTX does not have my vote. Its definitely not for everyone and especially not for people that like quiet or more chill type areas. Honestly the only reason id choose to live here or even really be here was if business was involved and even then i really wouldn't want to be out here like that it's really not worth all the stress and mental anguish that comes with it. TX is a nice place, but i really wouldn't recommend living in the city or mear it at all.
Welcome to Houston, TX. I always tell people to give the state/city 6 months to a year before judging it. Based on what you said, that's a bit traumatic for 2 days but I can believe it. My vehicle has been damaged so badly in Houston and not from me. Give it a few more months and if it's not for you pull out the drawing board. Everyone flees here thinking it's this promise land of a place and all there is to do is work, eat, and go out occasionally (if you have play $ during this recession). Houston will wake you tf up and make you tough. I am growing older and realized I'm no longer into larger cities. Been in Texas since 11 years old now in my 30s planning an exit. If it hurts your mental health LEAVE.

Now granted sxxx has gotten expensive as hell here but I never point fingers. Just be careful. Don't move out here because Nikki, Jon and Sarah did. Everyone has different circumstances. I see multiple UA-cam videos on "God told me to move to Houston and my life is so much better". Realize and understand you can make it anywhere in this country. We have over 50 states to choose from so choose wisely.

I'm not being dis respectful or anything, but I'm curious with the housing affordability in Houston and the surrounding areas, why would you rent? Maybe because I'm older, but the #1 priority is security of housing. I don't want to be at the whim of a property manager, landlord or whatever.....knowing that my rent will go up every year or that my lease will end in a year and go to month to month. BEing at the mercy of being kicked out at a moments notice. I see a lot of new housing and a lot of new apartment housing. And I'm just curious.....why rent?
Have you researched the property taxes on Houston? Insane and not to mention you have to be careful where you purchase a home because some areas flood real badly here.

Mostly rush hour but can be bad anytime. Houston drivers are extremely aggressive. Speeding, cutting you off, road rage, etc. Not a relaxing place to cruise.

Houston has some amazing parks and National parks as well.
Now as far as a beach we have Galveston (not really clean) Corpus Christi I've never been but have and seen amazing photos and heard stories.

There are some state parks in the immediate area, especially to our north. For some really cool camping/hiking options, check out some of the National parks in west Texas. Palo Duro State Park is near Amarillo and is the second largest canyon in the US outside of the Grand Canyon. Big Bend National Park over towards El Paso is another great and massive park with incredible views, hiking, and the like. That area is also a National Dark Area where surrounding towns and homes aren't allowed to use external lighting. The view at night is unbelievable...you can see the Milky Way across the entire sky...and quiet...wow. It's almost distressing how dark and quiet the area is. It's like being in a cave.
Thanks for the update. I'm planning to make a move to Texas soon from Massachusetts, most likely to the Houston area. Man, it's unfortunate that the beach is not taken care of. I'm a fan of the beach. I need to get away from the cold, hahaha.

Galveston beach front and seawall is nice! It’s just the water is the problem, but there r certain spots where u can at least dip your feet in Galveston like near Jamaica Beach area but it varies throughout the seasons. It’s been times where I was adamant about not getting into the water, but was shock to see the water was decent enough to go in. But then the next day in the same spot I went in the water has changed 😳and refused to get in!

Not really in Houston area, but there are in the area I plan on going.... although I'm African American, lol. Check New Braunfels, San Antonio, Fredericksburg, Austin/Pflugerville and the areas generally West of Austin in that triangular area.

Tacos are the best, BBQ is okay, Soul food is stale overall. Dash cam for court is necessary. DUI drivers are highest crashers in the country. Nice place to live for a decade, nothing more, the floods, critters, and gun toters are to common. Weak thugs drag old women for purses. And the same sucker punch 70 year old men for their wallets. Don't raise kids here unless they're athletic or work well alone with STEM training. Revolving door Police Chiefs. The new Mayor is petty, so far he's grandstanding. Infrastructure everywhere is growing more problematic than the Rust belt states. RE prices are fake but manipulated to look valuable for quick profits. Think about the Floods, cyclones, and more twisters and lax construction codes. Public transportation works for a few unless its rodeo month. Did I mention Tacos on every other corner, fat city frfr. The traffic is horrific, the city planning is hyper inefficient, there's no social scene, sense of community, or nightlife here.
