Such an honest reaction of happiness to those new lights!!! Something strangely comforting about the design of them - reminds me of my old best friends mum and dads car - an estate version of this very car in blue
A non-working door speaker could be the wiring between the A-pillar and the door - the insulation goes brittle with age, cracks due to the flexing when the door is opened and closed, then the copper wiring corrodes within. I recently rewired my Peugeot Expert's driver's door as the speaker hadn't worked for years, the window only operated with the door slightly open, the interior light didn't come on when opening the door (also meaning the lights-on warning buzzer didn't work), and the electric mirror only worked when it felt like it. It was sheer luxury to have everything working again!
I think it must be that...might also be a broken wire in there that keeps tripping the central locking
The new taillights really do make a great difference, looks so much smarter now! I had the same problem with my own 1988 740 saloon (see my channel banner) as well. I found some nice used taillights through the Dutch Volvo 700 club but they are very scarce indeed! Also, good luck with the rust underneath the boot seal, something mine had too. Same for the rust in the driver and passager footwell, I've spent almost the whole summer taking all of the interior out and welding in fresh metal. It really seems these are common rust spots for these model years of 740's. Mine was garage kept for most of its life!
crikey, and they were meant to be galvanised from around this time as well! Funny how they go so badly in these places

i have very much enjoyed watching the playlist of this great project over the last couple of night's.
I very much remember seeing a few of those 740's back in the late 1980's when I was cycling home to where i lived back then close to Dublin Airport.
As i recall there was one really nice example i used to see very regularly in a nice metallic blue colour with one of those Boomerang style antennas and the New euro style plates which had just launched here back in 87...and I always thought how much it looked like one of those American Limos every time i seen it.

I think maybe not the impact on those cluster nuts. that way you have some adjustment when they start leaking again.
Those new light units greatly improve the look and at an affordable price, well done the NL company. You were just in time, be prepared to pay more from 1st Jan. Changing to LED bulbs is a good idea if owning or running a positive earth vehicle with a dynamo, less swinging of the handle in winter as the battery might actually get charged! One might also get to see where one is going on unlit roads, how did we manage with glowworms for headlight bulbs, 25/30W ones and having to often park with side lights on for a couple of hours whilst in the pub, one was tested for driving under the influence by having to walk along the kerbstone or white line without falling off. The PC who stopped you was often on a bike or on foot, and followed you out of the pub, being in another bar or the back room.
An old co-worker of mine had some incredible stories of driving in the old 6V days.. Im tempted by an LED headlamp swap on this as those gloworms look tired

Ahh, I need a couple of those for my new project. Finally picked up a boxy Volvo to get back on the road, a 1988 740 GL in silver (ring any bells?) with only 50,000 miles. Been off the road for a few years so I’m sure it’s more of a challenge that at first it appears.

Liked the lights but never liked volvo bit of a bouncy box appreciate that others do channel like yours bound to be something for everyone great channel didn't like politics creeping in though.
Its a one off as Im particularly annoyed with his current performance
The Volvo pretty much encapsulates everything I love about this channel. Buy an old car (that many of us remember fondly from our childhood which is now a rarity) for a bargain price, from an owner who has loved it and had it from new, save it from being snapped up by the banger racing fraternity and ensure it continues to live the way it was intended to, sort out the various issues whilst still using it on the road and let us come along for the ride.
When you fitted the Alpine stereo last time, was it after the car had been run recently and/ or had the heater been on? I wonder if the cables may have been slightly warmer and therefore more pliable that time.

A cracked / faded / dull rear light unit ruins a car. Your new units look fantastic, so sharp fresh and have made the 740 look 15 years newer, absolutely cracking job Matt.
Seems to be a common issue on Volvos of this age as a friend of mine has 4 cars of this era and all have had faded and cracked rear light units.
A bitter swill to swallow costing more that the car did, but your 740 was cheap enough, allowing for a bit of after spend and was money well spent IMHO. 👍
What a difference! Lifts the car right up and makes that boxy ass sexy once again 🤣🤣 I recently changed the lights on my 940 to more updated clear ones and I always hold on to the original parts just incase. But I agree, perhaps there's are too far gone and will make an awesome garage accessory! Any way, seeing you buy the 740 earlier in the year made me get my 940 so thanks for the inspiration fellah! Keep up the good work, man! 👌🏻👌🏻

Its funny how much difference a new set of lights can make to a car. To be honest i didn't think it wouldn't change the look that much but wow, it looks so much better. Love the Furious Driving mug shot behind the lights. Im fine with a modern stereo in a classic car, 10 years ago when these cars were £200, i had a modern CD player in my 240 GLT. Nice to see the Mini on the driveway too for a change. Great video as always.
Its a conundrum with the Mini - if its in the garage its safe from the elements, but out of sight it sits unused..now I have to decide whether it of the Alfa get the garage for January..
New lights are like clean wheels of nice shoes, its a little thing that makes a big difference!

I drilled a hole on the bottom of the other tail light on my crx, well it doesn´t collect water inside it anymore lol
These were leaking so much in every segment they'd have had to look like colanders!
I did the same on my saab og 9-3 but the light assemblies themselves are leaking water into the boot. But at least my lamp isn't an aquarium anymore.
i know the struggle of trying to get speakers to work, ive given up for now but accidentally broke the blanking plate removing it so i just have a hole in the dash
Those tail lights really do make a huge difference and have transformed the car. I'd say on the radio front and it is your car, but the Sony head unit although much modern, seems to fit better and in my opinion smarten up the dash. But you'll probably find that annoying Sony bleep noise gets on your wick quite soon when you turn the ignition off. Keep up the good work Matt and seasons greetings, to you and the family.
It came out of the Mini, so Im already fed up of the beeps! Its a decent radio apart from that..

Yep. I've experienced leakage on my tail lights and the lights were uneven and kept on showing broken light bulb. I've bought pair taillights on ebay in USA and manufactured in Estonia. I unable to buy in my country because they are all sold out!
What have I done to stop leaking from extreme rain. I've put black
automotive adhesive glue around between the gasket
Automotive Adhesives. Lucky, no sign of rust when I took out old taillights.
When I applied new tail lights... Both tail lights are no longer even and broken light bulb stop lighting up! I've added LED lights on red lights to give more brightness! :)

I used a bucket of absorptive cat litter in the boot. Since solving my leaky rear windscreen, the bucket help keeps the condensation at bay.
That sounds like a better solution than the aggressive salt that is in that blue thing 👍

When i owned a Mk2 Escort i put a separate earth wire to each tail light, solved many problems!!

That company is based in the village of my parents. Never knew that there's a classic Volvo company there.
Really started to appreciate the 700 series because of your videos. I would even consider one now. Don't know if it would be a sensible choice for a first car
Its very easy to drive, cheap to maintain and insure (it was £20 to add to my group policy)and there are bargains out there as the original owners give up driving, but thirsty and the huge bumpers are impossible to see - Ive come close to putting them through walls and fences forgetting how far they stick out!
@@furiousdriving Thanks for your answer! Sounds like a decent choice then. Over here in the Netherlands, prices are a bit higher because they're seen as a semi classic by now, I believe. Also export is much more a thing which makes car prices higher in general.
I need to talk to the supplier of those rear light clusters, I've got a Volvo 480 and second hand the clusters are 200-300 euro each. New ones have been unobtainium for a couple of years. Sometimes new old stock pops up at 1000 euro a set...

@@furiousdriving I know there is a pretty large classic Volvo scene over here so that's why there are a lot of specialists.
I find rear lights shine up well with car wax polish, whereas headlamps can react to polish, polish will help considerably to stopping dirt sticking to the light clusters.
I was actually looking at ceramic coating them for that reason and to help block UV damage
You could just have a bad speaker in the driver’s door. I recently bought a car that only had working front door speakers. Before trying to get in to wiring diagnostics (which I don’t do very well) I tried plugging in a known good speaker into the rear door wiring. Presto! It worked. Same with the other side.

Did you ever treat and paint the rust above the rear lights ?
Again ohms law, voltage readings are meaningless unless current is flowing, if the lights are not working there is no current flowing. Get yourself an incansescent testlight and if you realky want a voltage reading clip your voltmeter onto your test light. However, your voltmeter in ohms mode will tell you which speaker wire comes from your stereo.
I have a CT-906 in my 940. It is an OEM Volvo single Din unit and I find it brilliant.
I purchased a pair of these lights when I discovered this video. However, I must warn others, the quality is not fit for purpose.
Firstly the fit and finish on one of the lights I received was messy with glue and silver paint on the outside of the lenses.
Then after some rain the one of the lenses in the right light filled up with water which blew the bulb and damaged the cars fault light relay. I bought a second light to replace and the replacement had the same issue with letting water in.
Then left light after a long journey the heat from one of the bulbs melted the bulb holder and the bulb fell out!
All in all, I am over €400 in with a pair of unusable lights. Have tried to engage with the supplier (and still am doing so). But they perceive me as the issue as opposed to their products. I would say buyer beware, I am sure like all spurious parts, quality can be hit and miss. In my case I can certainly say it was a miss.
I have run into the radio wiring problem you have on a 740 I owned years back. I have a vague memory that the factory radio was wired to an amplifier. Does your car have the little adjuster in the dash for balancing the speakers? I think you may have to simplify the wiring to connect it to an aftermarket radio.

At 11:28, if i was looking outside and saw this I would be quickly outside with a 7 iron...lol
You may well know this, but the metal over coat or frame on the radio has ‘tangs’ you bend up to hold it in the dash, the radio unit then slides into and locks onto this. I used to fit upgrades in the early 90’s - wouldn’t have a clue with the new stuff but I’ve done quite a few of the older stuff.
yes, I did a fair few back then as well. This is an odd one as the cavity is huge, it needs an internal cage for the radio to slide into - the Volvo one had metal leaf springs to steady it
Re the aerial adapter i ment where you plug the aerial in end of the pig tail and not right at the stereo end
ah, no thats the new style shallow plug that leads fall out of too easily
@@furiousdriving Grab the new style shallow plug with a pair of pliers and see if it pulls out of the plastic housing. You might well find an adapter comes out, allowing you to install the old style aerial plug right into the pigtail.
What rust killer do you recommend? I have a wee spot forming on my SD1. Bodywork isn’t something I’ve had to do yet.

My Vectra b very common with damp in the boot. it's the quarter windows gaskets fail badly on them. even when they were 3 years old suffered alot of damp in the boot
thats a random spot to fail!

The light units really are the jewellery on a car so having good ones really makes it look a lot fresher...
I would suggest dosing the boot seal with plenty of tyre anti-UV stuff to plump it back up to shape as it looks a bit flattened. I would also very strongly suggest taking the boot seal off and checking very thoroughly around the metal channel as the Volvo boot seals are so big and cover so much of the metal that, until you take it off, you're not aware that you have a rusty hole in the channel or large section of the lip missing, which is something I've come across on a few Volvo saloons/sedans, including my own, old 244DL where about half of the lip the seal attaches to all the way around was missing having rusted away due to water being trapped against the metal. It will also give you a good chance to treat the channel and lip with rust killer and fresh paint as it WILL be rusty under where the seal fits...
I am worried what Ill find when I peel that seal back to fix to spots Ive seen. Is it hard to refit the seal?
@@furiousdriving If you do find bad rot then it should be a relatively simple repair being as you can weld as it's largely flat panels or simple curves. As memory serves, the seals just slide over the channel lip and are largely held in place by the boot lid being closed on them, that's how it was on my 244 anyway. I would recommend dosing the seal with the tyre stuff before you remove it as it will bring back the flexibility and size to it by replacing lost oils and reduce the risk of it cracking or splitting when you remove it...
think a multi meter and wiring diagram might help Matt, my patience with that mess of wires would mean chopping most of it down to just enough to fit a standard DIN wiring ie ditching any of the original plugs. i have done this a few times in past, meter might help you find the corresponding speaker wire
Upgrade those old faded speakers to nice crisp aftermarket ones 😏 they will still be behind the speaker grille so they won't stand out
Yes, and run new cables as the old original tends to break in the booths between the doors and the pillars by opening and shutting the doors for 35 years! ;)
Belter tail lamps. I see Roadtrip France , Belgium (now be able to tune into JOE FM on Alpine Stereo), Netherlands (get Estonian spares). The Volvo is meant for this.
If not for Covid it would have seen some European roads this year

the 2.3 is oust as bullet proof same stroke 80mm oust more bore 88.9 to 96mm. and i do believe the 2.3 is allot more common to find as well, unless some countries like italy that had a higher tax for 2+L capacity

@@alexander1485 well then acm.se got a solution xD they got everything from downstroke and stroker kits for the 2.3 ranging from 68mm stroke 2L with the big piston bore to 103mm stroke making the 2.3 a 3.1L witch i may or may not have in a engine i am building at the moment ;)

I have the same problem with my gearshifter, hitting the radio all the time, maybe because i fitted SC900 in my 740 :D I think i will make shortshifter and new busshings for gearshift mechanism, and its really easy to get to them form underneath of a car.
thats a harder fix than a shorter radio!
In my early 740 saloon years 1st gear was used to fist your aftermarket stereo back in the slot
Those tail light lenses are a very large piece of acrylic Matt ..over tightening with the driver wouldn't help the cracking thing over time , just saying.
Dont worry I was aware of that, its got a sensitive trigger you can use it very gently - I didnt want it very tight crushing the gasket
@@furiousdriving Cool....damn stuff gets brittle over time. .hard to know how many times its been over-tightened to change bulbs by whoever.
Looked to me originally the earth lead was in between two nuts on a stud...
I had a E Reg Carlton where water was getting in the boot just like that, it was doing capillary around a loose boot lid seal , looking at those rust spots might reveal more under the seal...🤔
I did briefly hook the earth to a stud rather than make the tighter new connector fit, a clip of that may have slipped in, it shouldn't be on the nuts as they dont have a good earth due to the paint

For speaker problem - check door wiring connector. About radio - you can order "retro fit" frame with p/n 1384798 and use other Volvo radios. Example CT-503, CT-906 from Volvo S40/V40. Maybe with little effort that frame can be used with modern aftermarket radios. Certainly it would look much nicer than that frame what you have.

Water getting into my 740 ,discovered it coming in the air vent on left of footwell, stopped it with sealer .stopped leak.
You should look out for the optional Panasonic stereo that was offered by Volvo as a factory option...was a really good unit in the 80s.
I respect the old Volvos ruggedness, but I think they all drive like tractors. Even the steering wheel feels almost horizontal :). I´ve only driven v70,s40, s60 and xc90 though.
You didn't try the adjustment of the steeringwheel on those? The 740 lacks that, but I think all the models you listed have adjustable steeringwheel angles and telescopic option.
Those speakers have definitely been taken out in the past - they are riveted in at the factory. The slightly newer Alpines did have slightly different plugs
Are these cars common ground on the speakers?
Never ever seen riveted speakers, and I am swedish, I think your car was tampered with!
There are supposed to be gaskets?! No wonder mine takes in water when it rains.....
Previous owner mentioned he had replaced them.

I reckon joining classic car clubs is a good idea despite the subscription cost you should easily recoup the cost with advice and access to parts and possibly cheaper parts.

I got new rear lights for my 940 estate in 2013. It looks, a lot nicer.
Could have been worse ? Parcel man might have left it in the washing machine, oh and I beg to differ on your statement ? “ I’m not Crazy “ 😂 £240 on 2 brake lights 😢. OMG !!! but yeah they are important and it is Christmas Matt 😉 plus they kinda have you over a barrel when it comes to new parts and of course being positive ? You saved money 😉 and they do look great 👍🏻 all shiny and new , great video

I'd be wary of using a power tool to tighten 8mm nuts
where the thread is into plastic. In this type of
situation a small ratchet is preferable. Even on a low setting, that machine could cause damage.
It a variable switch and on its lowest setting is quite gentle and controllable
You might want to peel up the entire boot lips rubber seal and see if the metal underneath is a stich welded sandwich of panels which is now allowing water between them and the seal. I has a similar unseen leak and it was exactly this .
Yes I suspect it may go further than it looks, rust usually does
@@furiousdriving I didn't mean just rust. My problem was the stitched welded lip, a sandwich of two panels, was allowing water to creep up by capillary action under the rubber and go down through the un-welded part of the edge to only appear somewhere at the bottom of the boot from between the panels. No trail from outside to inside except some dirt collection under the rubber.
