Cords are amazing looking cars and so technically advanced for their age.
It may not be a Volvo 740GL, but it's not bad! lol
Well you will have content now on a Volvo, you were lucky it didn't scold your face stay lucky.👍
An swedish apologize for the Volvo failing you, check the expansion canister lid also, it should open if the pressure get high enough. I hope the head gasket and the waterpump is okey, I've seen new waterpumps with plastic impellers that can get loose from the axle if the water get's to hot!
I dont think it had over heated, the gauge was OK when I was driving. It was a 32 year old radiator so it did OK!
@@furiousdriving yes, old radiators with those plastic edges isn't as resiliant as older metal. But I have never seen one blow like that, maybe I haven't own one long enough?
I'm incredibly impressed that no bleeping was needed.
I had to watch back as I was surprised..all that media training I guess..
That exploding hose made me jump! Great vid, never heard of a Cord, I would have guessed it was a 50s car, so ahead of its time.👍
Made me jump too, fair play to matt getting it on camera too. 😀
I noticed a little smile coming across through your voice when you mentioned that you were going to get to drive the Cord in the summer. Can’t wait to see that. I absolutely love the instruments.
How to pass a Illinois Emissions test. #1 clear the computer # 2 drive it on the tollway to the emissions test center, #3 pass as you pull out the check engine light comes back on
To me, this and the Airflow are the automotive definition of Art Deco.
Jumped out of my skin when the hose popped off!
You get full points for not cursing when the Volvo radiator attacked you with hot steam. I would have used all the cuss words I know and made some new ones!
You were lucky when that top hose sheared, could've scolded you badly Matt
Curses to you Matt . . . LOL . . . due to your influence and my own incurable illness, I find myself the proud ? owner of a 220 gti Tomcat Turbo in need of much love, and surprisingly for NZ it needs a rust sill repair along with all sorts of other tlc . . . Think I might have to start a You Tube channel . . . your enthusiasm and clear joy of Rovers has inspired me to take a leap back into these British beasties, owned an immaculate SD1 VDP 3.5 when I was 22 years old and plan to secure a Vitesse before my 50th . . . Thanks for the inspiration and look out You Tube, another car mad bloke may be joining you soon !! Love your channel & your passion . . . Cheers for all you do !!
Wow, that was close. I never expected that hose to come undone that violently. I learned something new today, don’t stand too close to a radiator that is blowing steam.
That cord instrument panel looks like the 1930s Flash Gordon rocketships😉
Luckily changing the radiator on a 740 is as easy as changing a headlamp bulb.. I'm glad you didn't get hurt... 👍
As American I can assure you that the Cord 810/812 is still one of the cars we are most proud of in terms of pushing the boundaries of American engineering.
Glad you managed to have an MOT pass. That Cord looks fascinating, only ever seen one in person before. Oh dear, more old saloon cars with coolant leak issues. I know the feeling, sir!
That dashboard is the most beautiful I've ever seen.
I've never seen a Cord dashboard lit up before. Pretty spectacular.
Exactly the same thing happened to my 740's factory-fitted radiator in 2006 - a common problem, apparently. Luckily, I was only about 200 yards from home when it failed, so no damage was done to the engine. The Nissens radiator I subsequently fitted (a very easy job) has been perfectly fine.
I think Cords have the ability to find their admirers. I have been fascinated by this marque and its siblings ever since seeing one in a 1960s spy movie, driven by the dapper David Niven whoo played the protagonist Dr Love. The 810 featured in that film was a far more fascinating story than the film itself. Having been hurriedly restored for the movie. So I was instantly in love with Cords. I sought them out at rallies, museums and articles. So imagine finding one outside the village garage. It is s very good family run garage. I asked about it and it was the real thing not just a replica. This was a few years ago so unfortunately there was no movie camera phone and no YT to post a video. I wonderr if an old boy somewhere in Finchamstead still has a black 810 coupe wrapped in blankets in a garage.
That Cord instrument panel!
Looking forward to seeing you drive the Cord. Great that the Tomcat passed the MOT
I was half expecting the thumbnail to be click bait and to be fobbed off with a Honda AcCord but it was a nice surprise to see an actual Cord
love that 740... being in Canada I still occasionally try to find one of our own Canadian assembled ones.. We had a plant in Halifax, Nova Scotia up to late 1998.
I made a bicycle trailer from one of those Desmo roof racks! It served very well.
Another fab video! Nice to see that we have more content to look forward to on the 740, despite its attempts to scald you!! Let’s hope we get some dry weather soon, I wanna see a road trip in the Rover Convertible 😎🙌🏼🙌🏼
Fabulous that Cord. Haven't seen one for a few years it's like a fine vintage watch. Amazing
Wow, the Cord is a beautiful piece of engineering.
Wow you were lucky not to get scalded with the radiator hose coming off like that, Good job it happened while you were at the side of the road and not driving or it might have been worse. Cord sure did make a nice car with the 810. Its amazing to think that it is around 80 years old now yet still looks beautiful today. Thats good news about the Tomcat passing the MOT with no advisories. I would love to see the volvo with a C5 on the roof at a show this summer, lets hope it can happen. Great video as always and hope the cabriolet passes like the Tomcat did.
Loved the Cord. Shit myself when the hose popped
I've got one of those roof racks sitting in my shed, never been used, still got the original stickers. Even got a couple of the plastic bolt covers to tighten the mountings. Open to offers 😁
6am I'm watching this vid and totally crapped myself when that top hose blew off!!!I thought you got scalded, thankfully not. I've seen a Cord featured on Jay Leno ,fantastic anf futuristic cars ☺
How do you think I felt!
Wow, that Cord is beautiful. Love art deco inspired design on old cars. I'm amazed that there's one in the UK, can't wait for the full review and test drive.
That instrument cluster is just stunning. Technical a very interesting car, and the styling is incredible. Lucky escape with the radiator hose blowing off!
Very lucky, I was about to reach down to it!
Everything about the Cord is beautiful
The Cord L29 as driven by Dirk Pitt was the first American front wheel drive car. The reason I know a little bit about 20’s and 30’s American cars a misspent youth reading Clive Cussler novels😉😎 That was a great spot on that 810/812. Very cool.
Glad it passed, one thing I always did after buying a car with a new MOT on it was take it for another MOT at a different station to the one that issued the cert immediately so as not to put too many miles on the clock, surprising the number that failed with some very serious faults, money back time from the seller and with the proof to back up any court proceedings if they were reluctant to cough up. Yes I do know an MOT only relates to the condition at the time of the test, but 50 or so miles would not make any difference to serious structural corrosion, often unseen and well disguised as getting underneath on a forecourt is often difficult. Thankfully Cowboy dealers are almost extinct now, but seem to still be a lot getting a visit from the Sherriff's (High Court Enforcement Officer). Hoping for some dry weather for you so the Convertible can get to an MOT.
My absolute favorite Model of Yesteryear Red with a white top. Closely followed by the Riley MPH. New radiator and coolant for the Volvo getting closer to roadtrip adventure then.
Never doubted the Tomcat would pass.
A review & test drive of that lovely yellow Pontiac GTO in the near future? Reminded me of Two Lane Blacktop film in 1971 with James Taylor & Dennis Wilson.
You are a brill geezer furious. I love being involved as a viewer in all your projects and reviews. Pete 🇬🇧
Cords are beautiful, and those pop-up headlights were revolutionary.
The Cord is drop dead Gorgeous!! One of my favorite cars.
Terry the Tomcat? Sung to the chorus of SLF's Alternative Ulster kinda makes sense. Glad you escaped that rad burst, Matt.
I have to agree, The 810 coffin nose is my favorite car too! I've seen one, but would never be able to afford one!
wow, the volvo nearly got you matt! keep up the excellent videos as theyre
far better than watching tv :-)
Goodness me, that pipe letting go made me jump - you had a lucky escape there! I had a very similar thing happen on my BMW where the plastic on a t-piece just failed and it spat its coolant all over the engine and the southbound carriageway of the A1(M). Luckily it did it in a queue and I was able to get to the side of the road quickly.
The old Cords were primarily purchased by old Film stars and other well heeled folks back in the day, Were remarkable cars, rather like the Hudson, Frazier and Packard were in their day. Cheers
Bloody hell! I bet your shirt ended up crease free!
Agree with John, that hose blowout looked nasty! Glad you're ok. Yup one of my favourite cars of all time either the Cord or the Auburn. Wonderful machines. Thanks as always Matt.
Wow that Cord, what a car really looking foward to a proper review of that.
That Cord is achingly beautiful! I also have the Matchbox model (red?) and have always been very fond of the styling of this car. The sedan (the one you reviewed) is the better looker in my opinion, rather than the drop top we both have a model of.
red with a white roof! That was the Phaeton (fake convertible), I agree this is a cleaner look
Bad luck with the rad, but on the other hand you could have easily been scolded. When I changed my rad on my 240 it was very easy, but didn’t have any rusty bolts/nuts to contend with. The Cord what a Beautiful car , work of art. I think Jay Leno did a video on one.
Very interesting indeed! A real treat seeing the Cord. They were definitely interesting cars. Well ahead of their time. The Beverly Hollywood used the same body on a rear wheel drive platform after Cord/Auburn/Duesenberg went out of business.
A shame about the Volvo doing that to you. The rad certainly was looking dodgy. The factory radiator in my 90 failed at the 28 year/300,000 mile mark. Unfortunately it happened while I was on the motorway, and by the time I could get out of the live lane, the engine overheated and the head gasket went. Still, a radiator is not bad. Mine came to the equivalent of £170 for a custom made aluminium unit.
Super news about the Tomcat. That is one neat wee beastie indeed.
Oh the so classic B23X radiator fail. Worth buying a new one. That Cord is absolutely wonderful!
Omg did that pipe choose that second to pop off when your face was near it?
yup
"Not quite sure if it is" OK Problem found... The Volvos breakdowns are quite always simple things, i think that is the same this time. Never seen a Cord (didn't know it exists) but it looks fantastic!!
You had quite some adventures this week! I love the Cord, I had a poster of one on my wall as a teenager (also from Ferraris and other Italian stuff, I'm wasn't totally weird 😉). I hope you can drive it one day and film it in detail.
Its been a roller coaster! Not many know about the Cords, but everyone who does loves them. When its dry out we will revisit this one
Such a fantastic ahead of its time car! I had a Monogram Model kit of the Cord 812 Convertible version, when I was a kid. The line of the car are beautiful and mesmerizing, it really is a work of art.
Good morning! I wish you could test drive the Cord and experience the gear changing procedure, as it was equipped with those pre-selector gearboxes. Like the Wilson and the Cotal ones.
When its dry, I can t wait!
Wow, that Cord who knew such beauty existed,
That Cord, my god what a car, I have to confess never heard of them, beautiful. Btw if you like Mercedes, don’t watch the bearded explorers latest video, you will weep.
just seen it, what a shame..
We haven't seen a video of you detailing and machine-polishing the Tomcat. It would make a great video, as Tahiti Blue has always been one of my favourite colours, and we get black half-leather and 16 inch alloy content as well. And it will be surprising how much hidden glass will still be found in tiny crevices under everything, after that horrible back screen episode.
Its not worth it, the paint isn't good enough. It'll get a full repaint before too long
IIRC the Volvo rad is the two clamps on the top and it sits in rubber mounts at the bottom, two main hoses plus the small pipe on top and that is it. Hopefully straightforward for you.
Thanks, I hope its just that and not a rusted bolt in the bottom!
What a beauty the Cord is Matty
I have long admired the style of that type of Cord but had never seen the interior of one before. Simply stunning!
I hope you do manage to take it out for a drive when conditions are better. It will be a very interesting review.
9:10 I found this funnier than I should have done.
Lucky escape with that rad. Glad you are ok, get the AA to recover and get tinkering on fitting that a new one. I'm sure it will keep you busy!
Lovely Jubbly video, your one lucky chap with that radiator hose, someone must of been watching over you that day.
Tell me about it
I remember falling in love with the Cord when I saw the one on the first Mafia game back in the early 2000s
The clock in the Cord remind me of the theme of Batman the Animated Series, I like it. I like it a lot. also, are those suicide doors I saw on it? 😀 The Rad breaking was scary, very lucky not to have any coolant splash on you there! The roof rack with C5 combo will be awesome when done!
Jesus Matt you take your life into your hands making these videos for us! I jumped out of my chair when the radiator hose broke off, even the second time when I re-watched it!
I remember the story David Freiburger told on Roadkill once about some guy removing the radiator cap of an overheating car, nothing happening, then he leaned over the cap and coolant exploded up in his face, skin hanging off etc. Dangerous business, cooling systems - glad you escaped unscathed!
I remember that as well! I thought it was safe as nothing was removed or touched yet
Oh wow. The Cord is (almost) as beautiful as a Buggati 57SC. I love Art Deco cars. Poor old Quentin still waiting for his MOT though... One day he'll get his roof back on...
Know very little about the Cord. Look forward to learning more. Looks like it was ahead of its time. Was worried you had scalded yourself.
Congrats on the Rover MOT results and I'm sure we all look forward to seeing you fix the wonderful Volvo. By the way, that Cord is as beautiful as it is interesting, good taste!
Brilliant and adventure packed video for sure! Ahhhh the radiator will be a relative doddle to sort! Such a great idea about the roof rack and C5 though! Love it! Chuffed the Tomcat passed it’s MOT! It’s a lovely car.
I was a bit unsure about how it would do, but its not had any problems and Ive been doing odd jobs to it all year, usually emissions are its thing with sensors failing but I guess we've changed them all now!
Im just hoping the Volvo radiator bolts aren't rusted up
Omg that car was beautiful love the dials and the lights look forward to the drive vid
7:20 Is that a Wilson gearchange like the one used in buses?
That Cord is just a sculpture, although the headlights always looked like the nail on a big toe to me
Suspense! Danger! Weather! Quite a vid, Matt.
We have everything!
One of my favorite cars the Cord. Waiting for the drive! Now that was an explosive Volvo! Congrats for the Rover! Anyway, an exciting video despite the rain.
Congrats on the MOT for the Tomcat, at least you now have content for the Volvo now, but I jumped as well when it sheered off! That Cord is a stunning car, not a fan of american cars as a rule but I could make the exception with that Cord! Lastly received my beanie and can confirm its very cost and warm!
It was very european inspired, actually scared off a lot of buyers in the US at the time. The Tomcat is sort of 'old faithful' - exploding windows aside its a decent car.
Glad it arrived safe, love mine, Im going to have to order some more as Mrs F is nicking it!
I got my 416 Sli Tourer mot'd last week!!!!
Also always liked the Cord, never seen one in real life, but after this video I L O V E them, what style, what grace! Wonderful.
Your misadventure made good viewing mate !!
I'm excited for the Cord drive! 😁
Exactly the same situation happened to me with my -88 740. I had changed the very bad and old radiator hoses and the rust on radiator made me think that the pipe was metal. It broke on the test drive. Cause of failure: I tightened the clamp to much
I couldn't believe it was raining in England either. I thought I had a problem with my earphones for a second.
I'm sure a bottle of Radweld should sort that...
Hi Matt, the another 12month ticket on the Rover, that's great news, who have thought that pipe go on the Volvo like that, very annoying.typical british weather holding the MOT on the Rover cabby.
New pants and a new rad for you Matt.🩲💨💦
The Cord's gauges/dials are something amazing, like from the future that never came!
They look like movie props, Steam punk before it was a thing!
V8 front wheel drive one of the most unusual and rare drive train setups available
Lancia Thema 8.32 has a Ferrari V8 engine and is front wheel drive. It's a lovely car too.
People forget how much plastic subjected to heat degrades. How do I know? 20 years as a boiler repair man replacing failed plastic components.
That Cord car looks Amazing! Poor Volvo, My old SportKa made the same bubbling noise and streaming it ended up being a head gasket failure, I hope that's not the same for you Matt. All the best - Tom
no, just a knackered rad I think
Nice yellow car ,and wow first time I heard you say a naughty word.
It actually wasnt...I checked several times!
That cord is wonderful
I think buses in the 70's had a pre select gearbox?
i think you're right about that
I think that wonderful roof rack with far better suited to the Volvo. The Rover is so stylish it would be a shame to ruin it with that rack on top. Pete 🇬🇧
Could you stop up the top hose with a bit of bar (or even wood), do up the clip, and drive it home cold? If it's a short enough trip for the thermostat not to open might be OK.
Shame about the weather you could have used the Sinclair C5 to travel back home in. Would have made a Excellent video plus a win a win for the viewers a real road test of a Sinclair C5. Looking forward to more updates and plans on what you have got for the Sinclair C5 !!
At least we can watch you putting a radiator in the Volvo next 😀
Love the baby Duesy..perfect colour . The roof rack needs a Peugeot 404 estate tho ...lol Volvo needs a recon radiator.. looks like someone should have said *stay safe* this morning.
The paint on the coffin looks so thick and bullet proof and the colour looks so art Deco best car ive seen in a long time 👍🏻
People's mind's went wild in those days just look inside it makes a Dutch spyker to shame.more please 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧🇬🇧
