    Selma is one of the best films I have ever seen.
    I felt like I was a young black man experiencing the struggle for dignity in rural Alabama.
    I've never been outside Africa.
    Great story of great people played by great people.

    as a white person who was deeply involved in the civil rights movement along side my best friend who was black, every time i hear blacks refer to themselves as 'n ' my skin crawls i wonder why they don't understand how we feel when we hear that world? so many friends died fighting to rid the world of that word, my heart cries every time i hear them use it at each other as if it were ' cool '- it is NOT cool

      White people have no say in how blacks choose to address to one another. If we feel as though we are dismantling a word through it's use, in the same way that gay people have used the word "queer" that is our right. White people need to fall all the way back

    The way in which one of the most influential women in the world, humbly turned to a relatively new actor speaks VOLUMES of Oprah's genuine character.
    And, the way he in turn responds with such grace and reverence for someone who he knows was instrumental in paving the way is so spiritually balanced. I hope people get this underlying message. I really do.

    I love this. It was so up lifting. Its been such a short time since Jim Crow and the Civil Rights movement for our nation. The fact that Oprah gives back so much to ensure that our history is not forgotten speaks volumes for her character. People may not understand, but this is a necessary part of culture. Retelling the stories that make us who we are so that we don't repeat the mistakes of our past or make new ones that can be avoided. I wish that people were happier so that they wouldn't be so angry at people that don't even know them. It is what it is. Positive people will keep doing positive things and negative people will continue to poison their own minds and hearts.

    I really wish the Oscars were all about the performance and not the political campaign.
    Unfortunately, you have Birdman and Boyhood, two films with no bequest to its name, and Selma, a film that is evocative, relevant, and exhibitive on such serious matters that brings light to what's happening now and what happened back then.

    • @fong03
      @fong03 9 років тому +3

      Are you not contradicting yourself a bit? The fact that Boyhood and Birdman do not have social implications does not speak to the performances or quality of the films. They would be just as Oscar worthy as Selma. There are a lot of very strong performances and films this year.

    • @MouhamadouBDiagne
      @MouhamadouBDiagne 9 років тому

      fong03 Selma was higher rated than both Birdman and Boyhood, first of all. Second of all, every single "black film" that got oscar nominations either had a white savior or black characters in stereotypical roles. This film has neither of those things and it gets brutally snubbed over a film about a white racist who slaughters Muslims overseas. The academy and American society are racist as shit. Period. Point blank. If you deny it, you are part of the problem.

    • @fong03
      @fong03 9 років тому

      Mouhamadou Diagne You want to turn this into a political campaign, when it should not be. Also, your facts are all wrong. Selma WAS nominated, so your entire argument falls flat on its face. If you want to argue that Ava Duverney should have been nominated, I won't disagree with you. Also, I don't know where you are getting your facts, but Selma was certainly not "rated" higher than Boyhood or even Birdman. A simple visit to metacritic.com could have told you that. And you make it sound as if Selma is not receiving the praise it deserves. It has certainly been well received and well reviewed.
      The point I made (and that you only confirmed with your response) was that on the one hand you claim that the Oscars should be based solely on performance and not politics, and then in the same breath you make arguments that have everything to do with politics.
      Instead of screaming about how racist the Academy is (note, I did not disagree with this, though you are being hyperbolic) why don't you try actually critiquing the films and explain why Selma is a better film than Boyhood.

    • @MouhamadouBDiagne
      @MouhamadouBDiagne 9 років тому

      fong03 I am not MAKING this into a political issue. The mere process of rating a work of ART is INHERENTLY POLITICAL. Why? Because rating a film is SUBJECTIVE and automatically appeals to the personal tastes, experiences, and biases of the people doing the rating. Getting nominated for Best picture is nice, but it got robbed of being nominated for numerous MAJOR oscar categories, like best actor, best director, best cinematography, and best original screenplay. This article by an oscar voter should address what you are looking for: www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/01/22/an-oscar-voter-tells-all-american-sniper-sucks-and-selma-was-robbed.html.

    • @fong03
      @fong03 9 років тому

      You are. Of course the Oscars is political in the sense that marketing, smoozing and the like all effect the voters. (Selma not getting its copies out to voters earlier obviously had an effect as well.) My reference to you making this political referred to the social context because you immediately make this an issue about race and absolutely fail to acknowledge that some of these other films are very deserving.
      The link you provided summed up what I already knew and believed. Your Oscar voter only singled out Duvarney as a true snub and on that I agree. The best actor category was going to be close from the beginning given the number of great performances this year. I would have given the nod to Selma over American Sniper in that category, but it does not warrant the tirade that you produced.
      The original post signaled out Boyhood and Birdman as examples of how politics and not performances would garner them more praise. That was a wholly unjustified comment because both of those films are amazing - as is Selma. Those films might not resonate or speak to you on the same level, but that doesn't mean they are undeserving of the awards that are likely to come.

      Her role in the Butler was very different. The fact that she produces/provides resources for these movies to occur and nurtures the actors and directors of these movies and still gets asked to play roles in the movies, speaks to her greatness in many capacities. She is not a paid actor. She is placed in the movies bc no one else could possibly embody the heart of the roles she plays. It is an honor bestowed on her for who she is and what she contributes to these projects and she's just good enough to deliver and then some.

    history is just history. What happened in the past cannot be changed... what we can do is learn from it. Let's all not be quick to judge ourselves on the basis of our race. None of us had the power to choose their birth right lets embrace each other and stop being harsh. You talk about racism here but there are so many things that delineate us. Race is just one... what about religion, tribes, dialects...if we all focused on this aspects... what kind of a world will it be? Selma addresses voting rights act but in my own opinion its not centered on this notion alone. Selma can be any one; battered women, LGBT groups, HIV victims, Children, e.t.c. Let's not be ignorant we all ought to embrace civility and realize its impacts in our day-to-day lives

    Uncomfortable, but salient truths regarding the potential for economic equality.
    www.jbhe.com/features/49_college_admissions-test.html
    But there is a major flaw in the thesis that income differences explain the racial gap. Consider these three observable facts from The College Board's 2005 data on the SAT:
    • Whites from families with incomes of less than $10,000 had a mean SAT score of 993. This is 129 points higher than the national mean for all blacks.
    • Whites from families with incomes below $10,000 had a mean SAT test score that was 61 points higher than blacks whose families had incomes of between $80,000 and $100,000.
    • Blacks from families with incomes of more than $100,000 had a
    mean SAT score that was 85 points below the mean score for
    whites from all income levels, 139 points below the mean score
    of whites from families at the same income level, and 10 points
    below the average score of white students from families whose
    income was less than $10,000.

    Europeans - 8 twins per 1,000 births, average age when first walking ~12 months
    Africans - 16 twins per 1,000 births, average age when first walking ~11 months

    Hmm, here are a few interesting things that nobody will ever call out. First, in the Selma courthouse scene the officer hits the old man and his son tries to help the old man sit down and the officer gets in the son's face and when the son gets in the officer's face the officer hits the son but when Oprah knocks the officer on the back of the head he doesn't hit her, he just stands there a few seconds and then after that he has two officers pin her down on the ground 🤣🤣🤣. How are you going to be racist and politically correct at the same time? 🤣🤣🤣 If you're going to hit the old man and the son then hit the lady. Second, the old man was standing up but he was trying to sit down but the officer was still mad and still in the old man's face but the old man's daughter told the old man to sit down and when the son of the old man tried to sit the old man down and he hit the old man the son got in the officer's face and the old man's daughter told the old man's son to sit down, but the neither the daughter nor anyone else told Oprah to sit down when she knocked the officer on the head 🤣🤣🤣. Typical. When a woman fights back she's a hero but when a man fights back he's "wrong" or he's an "idiot" or he's "antagonizing" or he's being "provocative" and I'm TIRED OF IT!!!!!
