  • SELMA is the story of a movement. The film chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. led a dangerous campaign to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. The epic march from Selma to Montgomery culminated in President Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most significant victories for the civil rights movement. Director Ava DuVernay’s SELMA tells the real story of how the revered leader and visionary Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his brothers and sisters in the movement prompted change that forever altered history.

Some of the best actors come out of the UK. Who would have thought an English dude could play MLK so well.

Haha! That Boston accent Ava did had me on the floor! That was awesome. :) Also, David's appearance made me blink a few times, like, "Wait... HE'S playing Dr. King? But he looks nothing like him!" Then I saw the trailer and was like, "I severely underestimate the power of make-up, apparently."
A question, though, BlackTree. Probably a sensitive one. Since Ava brought up Dr. King's marriage, I was wondering. Does the film at all address King's extramarital affairs? Or the fact that the FBI not only tried to blackmail him with evidence of that but that J. Edgar Hoover actually wrote a letter to King implying he ought to commit suicide to spare everyone the embarrassment?

The film addresses a lot, but I am not going to ruin it for you. You will have to see! Thanks for watching and commenting.
