Let's go to Bali and see if we can find some uncrowded, fun surf. This first half of 2023 has proven to be super heavy for me in terms of workload. Mostly with projects that are not forward-facing to my audience which is sometimes a little scary for me.
Whilst in work mode writing and shooting POV for The Advanced Surfer's Roadmap, I went to Bali to shake things up a bit.

Bali is crowded everywhere now. If you’re Australian, it is probably still worth going. The flights are still “cheap”, short, and no jet lag. It’s not worth it if you’re coming from USA. You have to stay for a week just to get over the jet lag. I went 3 times when I lived on Guam. I ended up flying back to California through Bali. It took 24 hours with only a 4 hour stop. I love Bali, but I wouldn’t go unless I had an entire month to stay there.
yeah, it also just changes so fast there, it´s relativly cheap compared to the western countries, so changes occur fast. it´s not what it was even 10 years ago. completely changed, crowd is more spread from bukit to cangu now. so many foreigners, must be hard time to be balinese. 10 years ago was a huge challange, now it´s nearly impossible for them.
@@kezza10mail but that is virtually all the way they make income, something in the order of 95%. Were you there during pandemic when the whole place closed down? I was, and the locals were struggling BIG time. Some literally dying. One person was on the brink of suicide because they could not make enough money to live. Do research before you speak from your high vantage point.

The video makes me wistful. We wanted this year 8 weeks to Bali, but then had Schiss the trip the first time with a 10-month young baby from Germany to start. Now it will be Portugal :) Hope I create this time more than in the white water only to stand on the board :D

Thanks Lyle! I use hot water wax and keep it out the sun (unless I’m surfing it obviously!)

Only on obvious swell days
I would have to say, yes of course. Bali is for me the single best surf destination in the World, certainly in the June-Sept period of the year. Swell consistency is almost unrivalled, and you can find waves of all sizes and types. Sure it is likely to be busy because of this. Another point worth mentioning is there have been no shark attacks here. Not so at other leading destinations. Same goes for Malaria risk, no need for any DEET etc on Bali, not so on the other islands locally in Indo. I loved Bali, not for the nightlife, which i am sure is good fun if you want it. But the locals are so mellow and happy, the waves are so plentyful and that was all i needed!!! To be fair it was back in 2007, 08 and 09 when i went. So it may be a bit more busy now, but stay away from Ulus and Padang Padang and you're bound to score some great wave, i had many nice day sessions at Kuta beach even on smaller swells 🙂
Bali is not at all like it was back then. Keep your great memories and never return 😂

Hey Kale, I am going to Bali for the first time it has been my dream all my life. (I am from Peru so its pretty expensive to get there). I have saved the last 2 years for this trip. I also bought the intermidiates roadmap and the surf movement so my girlfriend and I are going to be in "training" mode for 3 months in Bali, do you have any advice for us? Thanks!!!
So good to have you in TSR Nico. I would spread your week out around the surf strategically. Implement at least 2x deliberate practice sessions per week based on the surf (with one big focus point each session) then add in your movement series 1-2x per week and leave room for fun playful sessions too :)

@@KalesBroccoliyes add to the trash problem with every plastic you use. Then add to the traffic problem because your doing something important for you. Some of us practice giving before we take. Not just take what you came for and leave all the problems to them. Don’t be afraid to help and acknowledge your part in creating it. Just because most tourist aren’t helping to fix it, doesn’t mean you can just add to it and ignore their problem since you just came to use Bali

Unfortunately I don’t think you can. Too crowded with no respect shown to locals or a bloke who’s been sitting and waiting for a bomb for an hour. The locals will show respect for a person waiting for a bomb but unfortunately the tourist do not. Blokes constantly back paddling. Way too blown out for me.
