Reaction to Creedence Clearwater Revival cover of I hears it through the grapevine.
Marvin Gaye is a tough act to follow but CCR stood toe to toe with the Motown soul legend on this classic.

It's not just a cover. It's a reinvention of a classic that you would assume could never be touched.
Opinion. We know why you believe that and prefer it. Actually, it isn't as good as any of the several Motown versions.
@@jnagarya519 "We know why you believe and prefer it."? Who's "we"? You don't speak for me or anyone else. So, then tell us why! It's not as good as the Motown covers because it's better. CCR"s rendition is 11:11 of magic!
@@pncombies , why do they believe it?
J Nagarya -
Care to expound on that
nebulous aspersion ?
Sorry, if you didn’t write it, it’s a cover. Just a fact of music
Marvin Gaye OWNED this song. Then Creedence Clearwater Revival OWNED it. Both are spectacular.
Amen!
I know it's a while later, but listen to Gladys Knight & the Pips version, and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles version. To be honest, there are a LOT of interesting versions of this song!
One of the most under-rated cowbells in rock history. :))
In the history of cowbells ❤❤❤❤✌✌✌✌
It needs more.
Sarcasm...I really hope. ; )
You need more cow bell
This may not be the original but it’s my favorite version of this song💙
Absolutely
It's close to a tie, I love CCR, but Marvin Gaye and his version is just great. I was in the movie "The Big Chill, who had one of the best soundtracks ever.
One of the best instrumental jams in history. It's well composed and relentless. The tone is perfect.
One of the few album jams where the band has you sitting in the room with them.
@@RideAcrossTheRiver
Yes. Very pure sounding.
@@nelsonx5326 Dire Straits and Muff Winwood would use that style some ten years later.
One of America's finest rock bands! John Fogerty besides his incredible voice also an incredible guitar player.
I think the drummer, Doug "Cosmo" Clifford , deserves alot of credit with this song.
The singer is John Fogerty -- one of the greats. CCR had a run of about 5 years during which they were one of the most dominant bands in rock. Lots of controversy around the band. Check out "Hide Away", "Bad Moon Rising", "Green River", "Have You Ever Seen the Rain", "Midnight Special"
Add Suzy Q
Add Fortunate Son
And "Long As I Can See The Light"
Wasn't he the one who was successfully sued by the record company for impersonating himself?
@@flingmonkey5494 p
If you like this extended version of ".... Grapevine", you will surely like the long version of "Susie Q" also by CCR.
Yes! Susie Q rocks!
Yes it's really awesome ❤️
So glad you played the extended version instead of the much, much shorter AM radio version. One of the best dance tunes for 70's stoners. Ha!!
CCR gives me Vietnam flashbacks. From all the movies in the 80’s and 90’s.
This is why I must wear headphones when listening to CCR, brings my husband to many memories of being in Vietnam!!
John Fogerty is so underrated. Had a great solo career after leaving CCR.
Fogerty is not underrated. He is legend
Exactly. See = Centerfield
No he’s not!
Total misuse of the word "underrated". I have no idea where that comes from.
I see it said about "The Beatles". 99.99 of their recordings were all over AM, and then FM, radio. Whole LPs charted on both LP AND Singles charts. Classical music composer Leonard Bernstein was one of the first in the US to lavish their music with praise.
@@ALong-fo5so "If I like it, it is legendary."
Another characterization is, "If I like it, it is genius."
Yeah youngblood, growing up in the 70's, black households we always jammed to CCR, Rare Earth, Rightous Brothers and the Average White Band. They were staples in our households...authentic grooves
This white girl was right there with ya!!
Great old music. Nothing today can come close! 👍🎶🎸🎤
One of the best extended tracks ever laid down.
If John Fogerty isn’t known as one of the best male singers, he is for being one of the most unique male voices.
Re: best extended tracks: This, Vahevalla (Loggins and Messina), and Inna Gada Da Vida (Iron Butterfly)
One of the greatest bands to rock this earth!
And He is the Lead guitar and main composer!
I think this is best cover of this song. They reformed the song to hard and dark southern country rock song.
I will never compare an original with a cover, music taste is entirely subjective. I will, however, say that I love both the Marvin Gay version and the CCR cover.
John Fogerty is my favorite rock singer of all time. Lots of soul and energy and rasp, his voice is incredible.
I like how they took their time. No one rushed in over the other instruments
CCR will never disappoint. Such an amazing body of work in a very short time. 🌺✌️
I love LOVA boss. Marvin Gaye & CC R doing hard. If I'm in a more calm relaxed might be the Marvin version if I want to do a rock, a Billy rock and roll song, get the laid out. Yeah I'll say c r works then
I would recommend getting on to be US state Earl AARLA drives Hazel bus driver hydrops. A bus I hate drives above take s*** to the guitar. J UIT AR guitar town TOW N guitar. Town's a song, it's a Staver.

I got something SMO OTH something smooth. There is a excellent. They gotta excellent video for this song. W I l k softly walk softly it's kentucky kentucky head hunters do walk softly
How does brothers sing in the song? Walk softly WAOK So FTL Y walk softly by the Kentucky da video brother. Yeah, y, a, p, it's, it's stolen down. Nora or a brother walk softly kentucky head hunter scotts a video for walk softly
I remember Gladys Knights version more than Marvin's. But I love all of them. CCR definitely put their own spin on it. Many people thought they were from New Orleans or the south with their "swampy sounds" but they're actually from San Francisco. I think John Fogerty is one of the best R&R singers!
I love your comment but they aren’t from SF, they’re from El Cerrito, across the Bay. My family grew up with them and I grew up with their kids. Totally agree with your assessment!
I could listen to Gladys voice all day long, absolutely love her voice.
Wasn't the Gladys Knight version the original? It has a recording date of 1966 on my Motown copy. It was released in late 67, and though not making a mark in the U.K, did hit No 2 on `Billboard` and `Cashbox` charts- only held from the top by Monkees "Daydream Believer" The Gladys version more `punchy` I hope Hari gives it a listen.
@@alansmith1989 Oh, I looked it up. Marvin Gaye did it first. I'm surprised. I stand corrected.
@@cathyortiz1280 Do your research first
Proof positive you don't need to be a shredder to play great guitar solos.
Shredders bore me!!
Very little soul in shredding.
Let's hear a 'shredder' even TRY to figure out Fogerty's Moebius rhythm loops!
Creedence were awesome I grew up with them as a kid cause my dad had their albums.Fun fact Creedence had more #2 songs than any other band 5, plus two #1 albums, but they never had a number #1 hit in the US !
"I Heard It Through the Grapevine" is a song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong for Motown Records in 1966. The Marvin Gaye version was the second to be recorded, in the beginning of 1967, but the third to be released. It was placed on his 1968 album In the Groove, a year and a half later, where it gained the attention of radio disc jockeys, and Motown founder Berry Gordy finally agreed to its release as a single in October 1968.
In addition to being released several times by Motown artists, the song has been recorded by a range of musicians including Creedence Clearwater Revival, who made an eleven-minute interpretation for their 1970 album, Cosmo's Factory.
This song always reminds me of when I was a teenager. I was at a small fair with my friend. It was nighttime. We wandered into the beer tent. They had this song playing. People were dancing. And one woman was dancing with this hobo-style clown. And this clowns dancing was BEAUTIFUL. He looked like he was in so much pain. Hugging his shoulders. Looked like that woman was just breaking his heart, right in front of us.
Marvin Gaye was great his version of Heard it Through the Grapevine was fantastic I love Marvin Gaye and I really like CCR both versions are great different but they are both great
Marvin thought CCR's version was "Swingin."
Marvin had a comment about it? For real?
@@RideAcrossTheRiver "Marvin's "man" Dave S. once told me (when he was Ray Charles' "man") that Marvin loved rock and roll and thought the Creedence version of "Vine" was swingin'. (His words..)" ~ Steve Hoffman, May 13, 2005
Ha Ha
Both Marvin Gaye and CCR prove that cover renditions can become great in their own right! You just can’t beat strong songwriting & composition combined with brilliant arrangements coupled with excellent musician ship. These are two covers of the many that have stood the test of time!
11 minutes of pure genise
Howl at the moon music 🤩🎸🥁 It is said that Marvin loved R & R and when asked about CCR’s cover of ‘Vine’ he said it was Swinging 🎶 🤩
John fogerty is one of the best singers hands down and a underrated band the drummer is off the hook
It's not just killer vocals (and harmonies). It's insanely good instrumentals. I hope this is the full version.
Dude. CCR is awesome. They have a plethora of great tunes. You’re going to get requests for all of their hits. However, even after you go through the “hits” there are even better songs like Someday Never Comes and Long as I can See the Light. Such a good band bro.
Long as I Can See the Light is my absolute favorite! I don't think anyone has reacted to it yet.
All the CCR members were/are top notch musicians and have had success beyond CCR.
One of the greatest groups of all time. The accomplished in 5 years what took others a lifetime! Great reaction!
You may have heard Tina Turner sing "Proud Mary," well that was originally a CCR song. They have a ton of great tunes
John Fogerty wrote it.
@@irenelopez7555 yes... when he was in CCR... thus making it a CCR song, originally...
motown mojo magic marinated with CCR's california swamp music...
I was shocked at how good this was. They brought their trademark sound to it and gave it their own soul. I'm like you. I don't normally want anybody covering Marvin Gaye but Cyndi Lauper has done an amazing version of his "What's Goin' On" you should react to.
John Fogerty is not only a great singer, he’s a great guitarist and song writer.
I’ll go along with you. He is criminally underrated as a rock vocalist. And nothing against Marvin, but when I first heard this in the long form blues jam it blew my mind.
Thank you for doing more CCR , ! The two songs that are my favorite are Sweet Hitch Hiker and Up Around the Bend.. ......which are great driving in your car songs with John Fogerty voice and guitar riffs these two songs were played on AM radio back in 69-70 non stop!
Other great songs :Down on the Corner , Looking out my Back Door ,Born on the Bayou ,Midnight Special, Green River , Jambalaya , Centerfield and Proud Mary !
Harri, you will love all these songs and I completely agree about Up Around the Bend. It's a fantastic tune. Also love Long as I Can See the Light
right, i like the somg FEELING BLUE.
CCR had so many hits in a very short time, you couldn't go more than 15 minutes without hearing one of them on the good ol' radio.
Love listening to music with harri
John Fogerty is always in the conversation of the great singers. This may be a case of you just not having enough exposure to CCR and his solo work. No worries Harri, that’s why we’re here with you so we can watch you discover this stuff.
Many of CCR's songs became very big with service men in Viet Nam. They were and are still very popular. John Fogerty, lead singer went on to a solo Career and did well. Well rounded talent!
You are correct about his vocal ability. I saw him in concert in 2011. He could sing just as well as he could in the 60's! Those songs are hard to sing well.
I saw him in Michigan in July, and he was still awesome. He tours with his kids who play backup. He's still a legend at 75.
John Fogerty has one of the most unique voices in rock!
You nailed it, Harri. It's the groove. Sucks you right in. Makes this track irresistable. For a great Fogerty vocal, listen to "Long as I Can See the Light". Beautiful and full of passion. He writes great ballads, too.
But the ironic thing is that Fogerty hardly ever writes love songs
Vastly underrated song!
Back in 1971 living in the pacific coast of Guatemala, his voice reminds me always of the good time living my childhood in a warm weather, late on I went to Antigua Guatemala, each place had a different set of pop music, but everything was coming out at once, super great years for pure wonderful music; and this song was very [popular in the radio, later on in the 80s, I heard the original song living in California, sorry, I still stay with CCR, same as in 1971 when I heard I put a spell on You, and still haven't heard the other version they mention of it, but only CCR, I thought this was their song since 1971, everything I heard from CCR , is so good, I was 11 years old, and now 62, but feels the same, all their song from all albums I collected: GREAT.
Whenever I'm feeling a little down I'll put on some CCR and it always picks me up
Me too !👍
Marvin Gaye's hit made it to #1 on the pop charts in1968, and Gladys Knight and the Pips made it to #2 in 1967. Both hits made it to #1 on the R&B charts. It was written in 1966 for Smokey Robinson and the Miracles.
They wrote and first performed “ Proud Mary” which TinaTurner later on made her own.
Excellent Creedence Clearwater cover! Johns vocals are sooo good! Singer Songwriter guitarist and Producer. Multi talented legend! His vocals on ' Born On A Bayou' by Creedence would astound you! ♥️🎼🎵🎶🇨🇦
I remember cruising the back roads as a teenager drinking beer listening to this and all the other great CCR
This band did more than covers, just about every song they(John Fogarty) wrote is at least recognizable by the people that he up in this Era.
I'm sure you'll get hammered with song request.
For me this one and I put a spell on you are in my top 10 this is probably my favorite just for the guitar work. here's a few to consider.
Ramble Tamble
Born on the Bayou
Green River
Keep in Chooglin
Suzie Q
Have you ever seen the rain
Proud Mary(Covered by Ike and Tina Turner.)
All of these songs are great and got major air play back in the day.
I'm a truck driver and Ramble Tamble is my goto when I need an adrenaline rush.
Marvin Gaye's version is my favorite too. That said, Creedence does this song justice and more. Their version draws out just how great a song this is. A few other covers from them of note include "Suzie Q" (Dale Hawkins), "Ninety-Nine and a Half (Won't Do)" (Wilson Pickett), "Good Golly, Miss Molly" (Little Richard), "The Night Time Is the Right Time" (Ray Charles).
Everybody wins when a great band does a cover of a classic and doesn’t copy it but does their own interpretation. Marvin Gaye loved this version by CCR.
john fogerty he is still rockin lots of music from his solo career
Great singer, guitarist, song writer and the band super tight, to me it sounds like at least 3 different guitar solos !
This is one of the greatest cover songs by one of the greatest bands. R.I.P Tom Fogerty
I love the fact that you, Marvin Gaye afficionado appreciated this version. This came out when I was listening to James Taylor, Kris Kristofferson, Donovan Richie Havens, Dean Martin I mean eclectic but male crooner leaning I didn't enjoy hard rock or drum solos, but THIS song mesmerized me with it's hypnotic percussion. Between high hat, cowbell, bass, guitar I'd hear a clock ticking so many things and it was the first time it wasn't the emo or the lyrics first. I wondered why it seemed special to me. Especially covering Marvin Gaye?! Who DOES that back then?! I guess my ear is better than I thought.
I’m with ya, I’m a fan of Marvin’s work-but I can’t help but love this version. John Fogerty’s voice & that guitar, amazing. He’s still with us, saw him preform on TV not long ago-but John won’t take solo credit, he gives it to CCR. Nothing like him.
Try “ Born on the Bayou” by CCR next.
I feel their version is angrier and more aggressive. He's upset with this girl and you feel it. Marvin's is much smoother I love both❤️
I wouldn't necessarily say "angrier," the way I'd put it is that this version is more frantic and almost falling into desperation compounded by the aggressive explosion of the instrumental section.
I don't hear CCR version being angry..it's the grit in John's voice you hear. I hear soul you hear anger
The greatest Cajun rock band from San Francisco ever.
This was great.
If you consider his guitar ability, which wasn't as technically acrobatic as others but man was it in the pocket all of the time and combine it with his singing, which as you alluded to he was one of the best and most unique vocalists in rock history, one would be hard pressed to find someone overall better at executing that combination.
I saw CCR live in Sydney Australia in 1972 when i was 17, Brilliant live band.
So glad you reacted to the long version. It's the best.
Whole different vibe than Marvin ! I love both ! CCR 😎
Can't find any information of what M.Gaye thought of CCR version. I love it as I do for almost all their songs. Not keen on Run thru the Jungle but much much better then what's on the radio today. I love I put a Spell on You Traveling Band and Up around the Bend best tho a huge fan of theirs since 68 with their first song, hit Susie Q.
The backing vocals on the chorus (by Tom Fogerty and Stu Cook presumably) are fire.
John Fogerty - vocals and guitar
Awesome song! Amazing cow bell! Another song featuring the cow bell that you might like is Blue Oyster Cult's song Don't Fear The Reaper! SNL did a skit based on the song with Christopher Walken where he wanted more cowbell in the song!
I owe a hell of a lot to the kind sole that got Creedence Clearwater revival into Wrexham library at the beginning of the '70s. This was one of the killer tracks I benefited from, such joy and wonder.
The bass is funky as hell, but yet, it's still southern rock!
Your just getting started my friend. Follow the lead of the other comments for your next songs. Have a nice trip. My recommendation would be "Born on the Bayou".
When the band broke up and he no longer sang his own songs (CCR), he started a solo career which garnered him more individual notoriety. So, you may look into John Fogerty the solo artist. He had some great songs, like Centerfield.
Marvin's version is great but CCR's is a standalone masterpiece that, to me, is the best version. It's really two songs in one. John Fogerty is an underappreciated legend. He sang soulfully, he wrote their songs and he played the incredible guitar solo on this. Now that I have decades of perspective, when I listen to Fogerty's absolutely amazing playout solo it reminds me of Carlos Santana and the trio of guitarists with Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Greatest statement,
"without music I'd just die"
You know, I think you're one of the only people I've seen use the word "bad" to mean "good" in the 21st Century. That's some awesome retro slang, there, and I'm all for it!
Harri So glad you got to react to CCR’s version I knew you would appreciate the groove. I don’t know what Marvin Gaye thought about this but he had to feel appreciated that this band would do him a solid on their cover!! My favorite CCR song and I have heard them all many times over!!
Radio stations here actually switch up regularly between Marvin Gaye's version and CCR's.
Got to hear his voice on "I Put a Spell on You". Amazing! The live version is the definitive one. Might be the Official video
Marvin did a cover of this song. Temptations did too. Original I think is Glaydis Knight & The Pips.
Have you ever heard screamin Jay Hawkins version of I put a spell on you, it's my favorite, it's the original,Jay wrote it.
WRT John Fogerty as a singer - CCR was pretty much in top in '69 and rode that to '71-'72.
You should try The Midnight Special by CCR.
One of my favorite songs growing up. One of the first albums I ever owned.
Saw CCR live at the Albert Hall in 1970 and they are just as good if not better live than on record. John Fogerty is a true legend of rock music. As below for 5 years CCR we’re easily the most highly rated band around. John is still performing live and is still absolutely fantastic. A real force of nature.
Harri, Born on the Bayou for another delta/swamp blues that highlights his voice and guitar
THE best version of this song, John Fogarty's voice is unique.
CCR #TightBand 💪🎅🐦
I’ve been listening to CCR for years here in Australia 🇦🇺. When I mention CCR, many of my friends say ‘who?’… But when I play their greatest hits they are surprised to realise they know every song 😂. They just never knew who the band was…
I have such special memories with this song. Love it. Thank you Harri!
Love this reaction, I grew up hearing all this old classic bands from my dad.. I lost my dad almost 2 years ago and this song was played at his funeral, one of my favorites from ccr
In the 50's, Soul Music was exclusive to the black community. It was not marketed to the white community. But there were 'rebellious' white youths, both US and European, who grew to love the 'Motown/Black Sound.
In the 60's with the coming of the Vietnam War and the Equal Rights Movement, Motown took chances and signed many white groups that were fans of the black sound. These white group did cover releases of Black Music, and the love exploded. White youth began listens to black artists and white bands and performers incorporated the Soul sound into their styles of music - strong bass, rhythm guitars, tribal drum beats, and deep spiritual vocals.
These days your Black sound has become so engrained in music culture, that Rock, Soul, Rhythm & Blues, Heavy Metal, Grunge, even Country all contain the essence of the Black Sound of the 50's.
Magnificent song and a fantastic singer.
Just an incredible jam. Classic Rock. Gotta love it.👍🎸
CCR really made this their own. I love MG’s version, but honestly, I like CCR’s version best. That’s unusual for me to like a cover better. The musicianship is just off the chain. The way you feel about people covering Marvin Gaye is how I feel about people covering The BeaTles.
But Joe Cocker owns "With A Little Help ...."
Marvin’s version is also a cover.
CCR remains my fav band of all time. John Fogerty is the lead singer, lead guitarist and songwriter. He made CCR into THE dominant rock group in the late 60s, early 70s. Just hit after hit after hit.
He still tours today.
I'd love you to react to his latest "Weeping in the Promised Land". Released about 7 months ago. A masterpiece. All about the 4 hellish years we endured under Trump.
Honestly, I would crank the radio up for either version!
