- What has now become a 4 year running NAMM tradition, I meet outside the noisy NAMM halls with the mighty Jamie Stillman of EarthQuaker Devices to talk about his latest pedal releases. This time he brought something really special with him. Something I've been hoping for for years. The Afterneath V3. The classic Otherworldly Reverberator, but now with quantized expression and CV control over the DRAG control, for harmonized sequence jumps. Oh, and it has trails now as well, so the ambient party doesn't even stop when you turn off the pedal.
We also talk about the best pedals of the decade, and generally just shoot the sh*t for a couple of minutets. Make some coffee. Grab a beer. Cuddle a pet. Eat some snacks, and then lean back and enjoy the talk and the tones.

Yes, I went to NAMM apparently. And I got to try out some cool gear and talk to some cool people. Here's an always favorite hang with Jamie Stillman, but this time he brought something very special with him, the Afterneath V3 Otherworldly Reverberator. I'm super hyped about this pedal. An absolute favorite at this year's NAMM show, and I'm pumped I got to record me playing it for a couple of minutes, so you can hear how awesome it is as well. Have been planning on buying the V2 after seeing your video. (I bought the Ghost Echo because of you). Had no idea about this! Glad I didn’t already buy it and can get the newest model!

I will be picking this up at some point during the Summer, for sure. My older Afterneath will go in the drawer with other pedals for Noise/Ambient uses with non-guitar sound sources.
Or run the V3 into your old Afterneath. Endless ambient washes await!
@@thepedalzone That would be a good idea. However, my pedalboard that I use for Ambient Guitar has the space at a premium. Hence, the reason why the V2 will be used for other things.
he should make the transmisser have exp control for the warp knob instead of the freq knob. maybe a 3 way switch that has the exp do warp, freq, or warp+freq. i always find i like the sound of the warp rolling downwards.
Right on man! I love my Afterneath . Think mine is the V1 with the hard click footswitch.
Yeah, if it has hard-click then it's a V1. But hey, V1, V2 or V3. It's a killer pedal no matter what 👍

Interesting what Jamie said about Strymon- the BigSky is still IMO one of the greatest pedals ever created and somehow stands the test of time like no other Reverb
They truly did take digital to a previously unheard level. And the fact that Timeline, Bigsky and El Capistan are still some of the best selling pedals in the world, speak volumes about the quality Strymon built their name on.

I find that “afterneath” is actually a very good way to describe what this thing does. I love my V1. Will probably not get rid of it, even to finance the V2.

Excellent video as always, Stefen. Forgive my ignorance here, but I have a few questions. Given the extra modes, can we say that the Afterneath has shimmer now? or did it always? With the addition of the expression control, what's the difference between it and the Transmisser now? And lastly, in your next interview with Jamie, please ask when he's putting a tap tempo on the Arpanoid!
Cheers, man! Wouldn't say Afterneath has shimmer. You can do manual pitch jumps, which can create some faux shimmer-like effects, but they aren't constant. Only triggered when you rotate the Drag knob. Its new feature is that the Drag knob can be quantized now, via the Mode selector, so you can do very specific interval jumps. It was totally unquantized in the old versions. Afterneath and Transmisser are very different. Afterneath uses clusters of close delay trails to simulate reverb. It's those delay trails you drag out via the Drag control, and you can now control that pre-delay drag via expression. Transmisser is a super-modulated spatial reverb, with a resonant filter, where an expression pedal lets you sweep the resonant filter on the fly instead of having to bend down and change it by hand. Regarding the Arpanoid, I asked Jamie that question after the camera stopped rolling, I promised not to reveal the answer ;)
Would you agree, like my ARV2, that the expression doesn't always let you cycle the whole parameter of what its controlling? This pedal maybe different. Knobs seem better.

I still have the V1. I can always be assured that I will wake the Balrog with the massive click it makes when I turn it on. It's pretty much like the Hobbit chucking the rock down the well in Moria.
Yeah, those 3PDT switches clicked HARD on the old ones. I'm really happy they've switched to noiseless relay-based switching on all of their pedals now.

V3 is definitely a big step up from the V2. So it's worth it to upgrade, in my book 😊
next namm you should interview jamie and then record the sound sample by playing the interview through the pedal, get two things done at once.

damn i have been waiting on this to come out...oh boy...do i need one? no... i mean yes..no ...yes..no..YES..the one thing i wish is that they had two outs... so you could slpit it into two amps like i do my avalanche run even though it is not true stereo.. because i run two amps and this pedal would normally be my last pedal in the chain
Buy two. Problem solved! 😊 Afterneath is usually one of the first pedals on my board. It’s one of the best pre-reverbs ever made.

Stefan, I know you love the original Afterneath, and now you've played this version too. It doesn't sound like the different modes do a whole lot without the expression, and I will personally never use the expression. Think it's worth getting a V3, or should I just get the V2 old-style Afterneath?
V3 has trails. If that's important to you, then you should get it. The V2 doesn't have trails.
@@thepedalzone I do love trails. But I also worry that I'd be getting something I wouldn't be using to it's full potential. Do the different modes on the new V3 sound any different when you don't use an expression or move the knob while playing?
No, the modes don’t do anything unless you move the Drag knob either manually, via expression or via CV control.

No idea. Ask EarthQuaker. They make the pedal, so they should know.

The Drag is meant to be manipulated. It’s what the new Afterneath V3 is all about, the fact that the Drag Control can now be quantized and make precise pitch jumps. And again, this was just a quick play through at NAMM. There’s not really time to test everything thoroughly. I’m sorry you don’t get that... if you want to see me do a full studio demo of it, where I actually leave that Drag Control alone for some moments, then check out my complete Afterneath V3 demo here on the channel. It should give you a better idea of what the pedal is capable of. I hope your mood lightens up and that you end up having a decent or maybe even a great day 👍
