EarthQuaker Devices Retrospective Ep. 4 - Afterneath Enhanced Otherworldly Reverberator

- At EarthQuaker Devices, we prefer to look forward when it comes to our pedals. But sometimes, we have to take a moment to acknowledge how much our past has enriched our present. This Afterneath Retrospective film is a labor of love that we offer to all pedalheads perusing the UA-camverse, especially our loyal EQD fans.
The Afterneath is EQD's "Enhanced Otherworldly Reverberator," which is a fancy way of saying it's a really cool, weird, and unique reverb pedal! When it was released in 2014, thousands of reverb variants were already present on the pedal market. But as you will hear from the many artists, producers, and musicians in this retrospective, none of those quality pedals have been able to give creative folks what the Afterneath offers.
Learn about the "happy accident" EQD lead designer Jamie Stillman discovered while messing around with some code that started out labeled as simply "Big Reverb" before eventually being expanded and refined into our beloved Afterneath.
Hear reminiscences from longtime EQD employees about how the popularity of the Afterneath helped raise EarthQuaker's profile and burnish our reputation for creating unique pedals in the industry and among players.
Meet EQD artist Matt Horak (whose talents we share with Marvel Comics and other publications), the man behind the iconic wizard and cave graphic that serves as a perfect visual encapsulation of the sonic qualities of the Afterneath.
And, with the latest V3, featuring the mode knob and a CV/expression pedal jack, there are even more sonic possibilities for folks to explore. You can dive directly into some cavernous reverberating chaos or make a relaxing sonic bed of gently undulating waves of notes, chords and sounds or any and all points in between.
We've also gathered an array of artists, producers, and sound sculptors, including Nels Cline, Arianna Powell, Robin Finck, Yvette Young of Covet, The Pedal Zone's Stefan Fast, producers Dave Pensado and Joe Barresi, adventurous harpist Lara Somogyi and others to talk about their love of the Afterneath pedal and its Eurorack counterpart and demonstrate how it gets their creative juices flowing.
Oh, and we also got a real Wizard!
Though we're a humble cluster of hardworking sentient bipeds at EQDHQ, we are pretty darn proud of this mysterious and versatile little reverb box. The Afterneath has been embraced by musicians and creatives of all genres and players of all instruments. Throughout its eight years and two upgrades, the Afterneath is still sending music makers down new musical paths for exploration, and that is as inspiring to us as the Afterneath has been to others.
As our good buddy Robin Finck, longtime guitarist for Nine Inch Nails, succinctly said.
"EarthQuaker Devices and reverb..what could be bad about that? Add to that your best cave of forgotten dreams graphic, and we all win."

Last year, I wanted to add reverb to my pedal mayhem. As a bass player, it's not the most "common" effect to go for. I could have gone for a "traditional" (whatever the hell that means) reverb pedal. I was torn between the Astral Destiny and the Afterneath. So I bought both. Happy about that decision! Keep expanding our my minds and taking us to different dimensions, it's your civic duty, haha!!
Yay, glad they are working out with your sound. Thanks for the support!
@@EarthQuakerDevices They will be a non-stop source of awesome. Forgot to mention that I went for the Afterneath because of the incomparable Juan Alderete. His demos pretty much locked it in for me.
Thank you very much for watching the Afterneath Retrospective! We really hope you love it
i oredred this pedal 2 weeks ago and it came yesterday, good timing
I feel like I've grown up with this pedal. The Afterneath is always the pedal people come up and ask me about after a gig because of all the amazing things that can be done with it.
I use an old blood noise expression slider with the new V3, it unlocks so much live manipulation that just wasn't possible before.
Well done, thank you and congratulations EQD.
Appreciate the insight on an effect I use daily.
These are increasingly just becoming full blown films, and I'm all here for it.
We appreciate your attention!
Thank you so much for letting me be a part of this monumental retrospective. What an achievement this video is! Great work, gang! And thank you for enriching our sonic lives with the Afterneath and the rest of your amazing creations. Don't know where I'd be without them ❤
Hey, it’s that guy with his own chapter! Love you Stefan! Thanks for everything!
This ☝️ guy ( stefan pedal zone) is a serious player.those not wise to his channel check it out
Yeah! Stefan!!
Your demos are seriously the best examples my man! Appreciate your efforts and contributions :)
@@randomaztec2208 Super kind of you, man. Thank you!
What an incredible look into the Afternearth. It's one of my favorite EQD pedals. Jamie's design is very inspiring, I went and designed probably a half dozen pedals, chasing various reverb concepts of my own. Afternearth is a top ten pedal of the last decade easy.
👀 Thank you Mr. Robert Keeley! You are an inspiration to us all!😍
Seriously, thank you to everyone at EQD for doing these vids. UA-cam needs more high quality pedal builder content 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
we are cutting edge af, much thanks for the luv❤️
Love watching/listening these retrospective episodes. I remember my mom was listening to me play the afterneath once and she just sat there with a big smile, said it sounded like I was playing over a big shimmery lake or something. Shes an older piano player that never heard a reverb other than the room she played in. Its a very lovable sound.
way cool! thank you for sharing 🖤
It is a glorious day when Nels declares something "loop-worthy"; thank you to Jamie and EQD for making one of the most inspiring and beautiful musical devices ever.
yay to Nels, yay to Noyd! Thanks!
This pedal kinda sounds like Godspeed you black emperor as a pedal.
Also kinda reminds me of the reverse reverbs from early Shoegaze albums.
reverse reverbs hellz yeah
I love earthquaker so much!!! My astral destiny was a game changer for me!!! Especially on my bass!! I click it on at shows and people absolutely love it!!
Sometimes when a pedal doesn’t make sense that the best time to dig into it!!!
The harp player tho!!😍😍😍
So glad to see Stefan on here!! He’s my favorite pedal channel and I’m a bass player!! He’s the reason I got the Astral Destiny!!! Stefan is amazing!!!! 🙏🙏 I would give anything to jam with him one day!!
Who knew Robin Finck was so fuckin’ poetic?!?! I knew he was rad… but poetic… now I want like a two hour interview with him.
ok ok
@@EarthQuakerDevices dooooo ittttt!
you have to watch his Ernie Ball string theory if you haven't seen it. it is a masterpiece.
@@dadoboogins7833 Thanks for the heads up! I’m on it!
I’m back… It was rad… Thanks! The part about putting the strings in the freezer next to the Klondikes and the Benson and Hedges ❤️
This pedal has been on my wishlist forever but I never had the cash to get it. I’m finally ordering one tomorrow and I’m ecstatic.
thanks, enjoy!
I once sold one of these at the music store. I didn’t work there. I was just telling the kids that were looking at it about how cool mine was and that you could run any instrument with an output through it and make that instrument sound otherworldly. So the girl ran a violin through it and we cranked it up and she bought the pedal that she wasn’t so sure about.
I absolutely love mine. It was my first boutique pedal ever. Didn’t really even get the appeal until I tried this at the shop. Now I have 3 full pedalboards.
I really miss EarthQuaker Day. I hope that comes back in the future.
The Afterneath was my first EQD pedal. Im now the owner of several other EQD pedals, love em all. Keep up the great work!!
will do, thank you!
One of my favorite parts of these retrospectives is the inclusion of all kinds of musicians and not just guitarists.
Of course!
That pedal is an "ethereal machine" for deep sound exploration !
A must have !
And I love MOANING, it's a super post rock band with wonderful melodies (Close, Saving Face, Artificial, Stranger, Tired ... etc) and great sensitivity !
yessss! thanx
The Afterneath is incredible and endlessly inspiring. Thanks for putting together this excellent retrospective film!
well thanks for stopping by! Subscribe for more retrospectives!
What a great documentary 😊 it’s a great pedal anyway but this is amazing digging into its history 👍
How great to see this video, the afterneath is a very inspiring pedal for us and deserved a wonderful video like this. Congratulations guys.
thank you!!!
I would love to see more of these full-length deep dives into the history of EQDs. From the inspiration, to the art, to the artists and how they interpret the pedal dynamics is fascinating.
Thanks so much, a lot of work went into this one, glad you enjoyed it!
Really loved this. The Afterneath is such a unique pedal and it was great seeing it used in such a variety of applications. Also love seeing such a diverse and interesting group of talent. Excellent job, EQD.
Thank you, Mike Hoffman!
This is, by far, the best series on UA-cam. Love it. Can't wait for the next one.
Wow, thanks! Subscribe and never miss a beat, hiss, rumble, squeal... you get the idea...
I love Earthquaker! I'm getting this. Keep up the great work!
Thank you! Will do!
I absolutely love my afterneath! Pair it with the old blood noise expression ramper and it reaches new dimensions of chaotic beautiful noise. I have no idea what it does but it’s amazing!
not knowing is mostly fun all of the time! enjoy!
Yup, same here. Afterneath & Ramper!
A couple years ago I was looking for a new pedal and saw this one at my local guitar shop. Tried it out and instantly was inspired. This pedal DREW a song out of me. Favorite reverb for sure
i have wanted one of these for along time, half way through this and i finally pulled the trigger on one. Cant wait.
have fuuuuun!
After resisting for a while and thinking I didn't need another reverb pedal, I finally gave in last year and got a v3. It's magical to say the least and has been finding its way into many recordings.
The Afterneath was my first earthquaker purchase… best pedal company ever!
rad! thank you!
My first Earthquaker as well. Nothing else like it.
Same. Now I have 5 different EQD pedals. XD
PLEASE MAKE MORE
cool!
This is incredible!
Thanks!
Please incorporate cv inputs & outputs in guitar pedals so that they can talk to each other. Wonderful doc by the way. More!
The Afterneath is a mainstay on my board and almost always on. Love this pedal so very much, along with the Rainbow Machine.
wait. almost? ALMOST?!?!
nah just kidding, thanks for using our stuff!🥰
With the first Afterneath being my first EQD pedal, I had loved the ethereal sounds of it. Of how much there's so many blends of scattering delay and full lush reverb melded together. I loved the beautiful sound even when I want it to get creative on how I play it through the sound.
Ethereal on! and on and on and on
This is so cool
This thing has stayed on my pedalboard for four years and has greatly influenced all of the records I've been on or made since. Thank you for this!
thanks for checking it out and for your undying loyalty to good tones!
I just started getting into guitar, and bought a couple pedals after I learned a few songs, fortunately stumbling into this one. I love this thing, magical sounding and I was having fun learning but now I'm addicted haha! :D Got another Earth Quaker right after too!
Been wanting this pedal for awhile now I'm soo glad I waited just ordered the v3 before even watching this whole thing!! It sold me!! Cant wait thanks for this awesome pedal!!🐘
Ought to sound pretty damn cool with electric mountain dulcimers since they are drone instruments I love the night wire it's my favorite pedal until I pair it with afterneath thanks again
Oh yeah that will rule. Thanks for your support!
Ok I've had the afterneath for 2 days! I just played it alone with my dulcimer! And Man there are no words to describe how inspiring and mind blowing this f@#$ing pedal is! For Real I cant get over it!! Thanks again
The Afterneath v2 was one of the first pedals I've ever got, and it was the time I was exploring my now favourite genre, shoegaze. I ran to get the v3 as soon as it was announced and now is the base of my tone in everything, I can't play with that little cavern in the end of all.
That thing is so essential for my sound. Best pre-dirt reverb of all time. Now all you need to do is bring back the Speaker Cranker and Gray Channel :D
pre-dirt is BOLD
I just ordered a V3. I always put reverb at end, but I keep seeing people saying to try this in other parts of the chain.
this pedal does so much more than I ever expected, I thought it would be the accent to my Tera Echo 2 but now it's just on all the time and I'll either have it subtly in the background or crank it for maximum chaos. Beautiful chaos.
It's the base layer to the story of your musical life!
I remember it being 2015-16 going to a store and seeing the afterneath and the levitation I think it was called. Both were great but the afterneath was a whole other animal. 🤘🏻
And together… oh together…
I just love yours pedals!! Just #love.. its my inspiration! :)
thank you very much for the love, Ógner!
This is great.. There is not enough content like this about pedals and effects..
glad u dug it, patrick. thanks for stopping by
@@EarthQuakerDevices Not at all.. thank you..🤘
Fuck me. These films are sick. A crazy core of creativity behind your products
*coughs and spits out diet rite cola* ahem... thank you.
I love my Afterneath pedal, I used on the intro of a song just recently for that massive but granular reverb
nice! thanks for giving it a great home!
In that clandestine meeting of "Too Much", whomever it was that suggested the Dry Kill switch... Thank You.
😋😎🥰
Love this wild ass pedal. It's awesome 😊
thanks for tha luv
Great video . Looking forward to using 1or 3 in my Atmos setup.
oooh yeah!
Pedal Zone ❤
a great, great, GREAT channel for demos!
@@EarthQuakerDevices i gotta get me an afterneath you guys have convinced me!
Please release a ten year anniversary with all the functionality of V3, but with V1 graphics!
I love my Afterneath. I love EQD.
we love you too! thanks!
Gracias por este documental de Pedalboards 😍👌
Gracias por ver!
Robin Finck shouting out Andy Martin is just about the coolest thing.
wayyyy kooool!
Love this pedal so much, shout out to Gran Hechicero who introduced me to it!
I love the graphic on my Afterneath.
The black blob looks like both a cavern entrance and a Balrog at the same time.
The crash it makes when I switch it on sounds like the stone the hobbit threw down the well in Moria that awoke the balrog there.
My first (and only) EQD pedal. I had to have it, I'm keeping it forever.
Wow !! The illlustrator bit is mind blowing !!
Matt Horak is an incredible artist and illustrator!
@@EarthQuakerDevices Hell yeah !!
OMG Karl! You look so fucking cool in this, I love it. I miss you man.
This is Violet you knew my by a dif name I sold you my sequencing circuit and i miss you bud
I never fully realized how radical the Afterneath was until now. I sat in a store and tried a bunch of reverbs one day, and the Afterneath just sounded better than all the others to my ears. It has some amazing, unusual features, but I mainly just picked it because it blew the others out of the water as a "normal" reverb. Even if that was all it could do, It would still be world class!
Love my Afterneath! I don't know if the new version has this feature but I wish mine had the momentary function in the switch. Or a hold.
Btw, I was just listening to the audio while photo editing but I instantly recognised Stefan Fast's sound :)
I can’t believe I just watched an hour-long documentary about a mystical subterranean rainbow sound cloud generator. 😜 I have no idea how I would use one of these but I want one. Maybe I’ll even get an instrument to play through it. 😉
I’ve wanted one of these for my electro-trumpet rig so bad. May have to pull the trigger on one sooner than later
yeah get weird!
This was such a great episode, love this type of content. Sold I’m getting one
Cheers BARIT⭕️NE CULT
Tone the bari and thank ya!
My favorite pedal and people!
we love you! thanks for the RAD opening piece!
@@EarthQuakerDevices Love you all too :)
Great video! Love this pedal. You should do an introspective on the Hoof and/or Dispatch Master! \m/
We gots da hoof one in da playlist! Episode ONE! Dispatch Master is classified.
@@EarthQuakerDevices ah snap! Will be checking the Hoof one next!
Magic! 🙏🏻✨😯🎶
just for all y'all!
@@EarthQuakerDevices Thank you!
thanks for watching it!
This is my first EQD Pedal. It was fitting because I'm a reverb-lover guy. I actually bought the Strymon Volante for its spring reverb at first and just tinkered around the amazing delay on it. :D Now, I partner it with the Afterneath plus expression pedal (I use Fractal Audio's EV-2 expression/volume pedal). Works so good than the Moog. And much smaller, too.
Kudos, EQD for this amazing pedal!
Next on my list is: Rainbow Machine.
Very cool!
Aaaaaand…it’s in the mail!
I’ve been rocking V1 with my fretless bass for a couple of years now. Might have to check out the updated version.
thank you very much AND for being a LONG time subscriber to our channel!
@@EarthQuakerDevices I’ve been using your pedals for a long time now.
thank you sooo much! It really means a lot to all of us!
Cool video! Now I want to try out the Afterneath now. I really like the visual aesthetic of EQD so I'm a little bit disappointed that the Eurorack module isn't adorned with a cool graphic like the pedal. Modular synth people like nice looking stuff, too. Well, I do anyway. Regardless, neat stuff!
Thank you!
I mean, it's got that sweet ass wizard on it. It's down by the "A", just to the left of it there.. Check out the limited silver version, available today!
Interdimensional Universes , it is the flux capacitor I've been looking for because I got to get back to the future 🤓
EQD: Describes a fully realized science fantasy world where pedals like "Dreamcrusher" and "Afterneath" are turned into characters and settings, lovingly depicted in comic form
Me: "When does the Bit Commander get a Tone Job from the Dispatch Master?"
Hey now
And the Eurorack version is so good too. An instrument on its own…💯
💯💯💯
Dying for this pedal! Smh
Talking all night about the third world war and waking up to this video: thank you guys, love from italy
I had a similar experience when trying it in the store. I was taken somewhere else and almost felt like I was playing with someone else. A call and response with the wizard in the ancient cave they live in.
... you chose... wisely...
Damn... if I would've seen this video on the afterneath I would've went ahead and purchased before I bought the oceans 11. Still dig the oceans 11, but man I may be looking into afterneath in my future.
the wizard pedal! lol reminds me of Gran Hechicero
Do other people cry about how much they love the sounds their pedals make? EQD low key probably saving lives through tone
The best.
You are!
@@EarthQuakerDevices NOPE
Great video. It’s good to see all these musicians from all genres but I would’ve loved seeing Juan Alderete, at least being mentioned as a notable user, the dude sold me on at least 4 EQD pedals…
He was mentioned.
I mean, I can't be the only one to think that's Gandalf right? I want the pedal just for that reason, the fact it sounds incredible is just and added bonus!
"It has Gandalfian vibes but shall not be associated with any particular wizard, fictional or otherwise, past or present, living or deceased"

Welcome to the Mines of Moria.
@@EarthQuakerDevices Of course 🤫
I set mine subtlety and it's an integral,"always on" part of my sound.
that's a cool way to use it!

Nicley done Video. From a fellow Akronite.
Thank you AKRON!
Hehehe the afterneath was my first boutique pedal
Had it fixed at the earthquaker labs which was the coolest experience since I live in Ohio they let me hand deliver it.,
Nicest people!!
It started doing something weird though after it got fixed, so it's just hanging out in it's box these days 😖💔

My favourite REVERB of all 🧭
SOUNDS LIKE CLOUDS!!!
Is there a non volume drop version? I could never get it settled in the chain due to the large drop.
It’s my “always on pedal “ .
Will Eqd ever will do outboard gear? Compressors, EQs, etc.?
How would I typically use this in post/mixing in my simple home studio? Would I simply put it in the insert point of my preamp and re-record in real time (adjusting on the fly)? More simply, maybe the question is, can it take line in?
Hi! We can help you with all the tech assistance you need here: earthquakerdevices.com/contact
Thank you for your interest in Afterneath!
Honestly, if this video was three hours I would watch it so I purchase the euro rack module but the best part is I don’t have any room in my case lol so I’m gonna have to buy another case I guess but the main importance Is that I own the module.
Oh boy i'm the 808 viewers. I wonder how this pedal would sound on a TR-808 now hahaha.
Freakin’ siq!
I have the 1st version. Afterneath #775. She's been good to me.
rad!
Fast is a poet.
But do he know it
Well done... and entertaining! I already have the Arpanoid, Organizer and Aqueduct - all stellar pedals. Though, I suppose they're a bit lonely for some cave-dwelling reverb!
This turns them all into mystical carriages at midnight
I have v3 I think. Its dope. Can you sing through it and play guitar in the same pedal?
Usually, injecting two signals into the same pedal at once results in unwanted noise and hum but you might as well try it to see for yourself
What crazy weird bike is that?
